View Full Version : The Kids RT142 Corona -SR-

The Kid
7th September 2009, 06:42 PM
Picked up this on the weekend, a dead stock well looked after RT142 Corona SR. It runs a 22RE (2.4 SOHC EFI), W55 gearbox and borgwarner diff.
The (quite rare) SR model came with a front lip, rear wing, different tail lights and grille, leather steering wheel and red seat stipes, maybe a few other things I've forgotten or don't know about.

Goes alright, so much torque, plenty of body roll though, just about capsized her taking a corner with some gusto yesterday.

Short term plans (ie tomorrow)
Remove wind deflector
Remove tow hook
Get tyres for my 15s
Roll gaurds
Remove springs (temporary)

After that
RA60 struts converted to coilovers
Short stroke shocks
Camber tops
Strut brace
Shocks and springs for rear
Lots of Super Pro bushes
etc

Then skids

That's only temporary man, good shit will be on the way from AJPS asap, and I won't be driving it much before then, its for hard parking and photo purposes only.

And thanks Dave, email sent.

What sizes? Mint!

2.4 SR is suuuuper rare.

The Kid
7th September 2009, 11:42 PM
MK3s are 15x8 -12
Streets are 15x9.5 -19

In the long term would probably like wider for the front, didn't originally want such a big variation in sizes, but when the Streets came up I couldn't refuse them, have wanted to own some for a long time.

And yes they are, thankfully the previous owner didn't realise this :)

Right, calm now.

Your car will be win. SR RT142 are rather rare and it's quite a find to grab one in good condition.

Needs black grille.

The Kid
8th September 2009, 12:39 AM
Thanks guys :P I'll admit the pictures are a little flattering, but it is in quite good condition, and I plan to clean it up a bit more yet.
Javal, I pretty much bought the wheels as soon as they came up on Yahoo, really didn't want to miss them. Will be getting a black grille soon too.
Another pic of the Streets, just because:

It will be street driven, yes, as little as I can manage though, not hard when not working or learning. May be getting a free KE70 sometime maybe, so would daily that.
Might try and get a myriad of lock nuts for the Streets in the meantime though :P

Thanks Grant, and yeah the S13 is for sale. (http://cgi.ebay.com.au/Nissan-Silvia-S13-RB25DET-swap-minus-engine_W0QQitemZ330358314497QQcmdZViewItemQQptZAU_ Cars?hash=item4ceae3d601&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14#ht_500wt_1182) Now man up and finish your bloody car!

Small update for today. No tyres yet though :(

My sister has a nice little 1982 RA60 Celica, which happened to have a slightly larger exhaust fitted previously, which was originally from a Corona! (they're near identical cars underneath) So today decided to do the old switcheroo. The exhaust was one piece though and proved a royal pain the ass to remove and then install on the Corona.

Had to throw the back end up in the air, then disconnect the panhard, shocks and swaybar to drop the diff back on the ground to create some room to weave the system through.
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/5/8/2/22568.jpg

Too many cars! Selling the Silvia and Celica though.
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/5/8/2/22569.jpg

Here you can see the difference in diameter, the Corona exhaust (top) being a much more sensible and workable two piece design.
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/5/8/2/22570.jpg

Both used the same front section however.
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/5/8/2/22571.jpg

New gasket rings where the exhaust meets the manifold:
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/5/8/2/22572.jpg

And done.
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/5/8/2/22573.jpg

I was afraid it would sound like a diesel, being a truck engine and all, but it gave it a rather throaty growl, decently loud but not too intrusive into the cabin, plus no drone! Was a prick of an all day job, but well worth, alot more enjoyable to drive now. Maybe breaths a little better, but not a massive difference.

Wheels tomorrow hopefully, definitely by the end of the week :P

Corona's have funny wheel arches true?!......You'll probably need to work the back ones to fit the rims under.....but whats the bet the fronts just fit in there sweet!!
I sussed out the 15x8 -0's on mine!

Good Work man!!

Nah, Rear should be fine as it's IRS. Will need a slight roll though.

What are you getting from AJPS?

The restriction with the 22re is at the exhaust manifold, have you looked at it :P

Joshie_Mcslide
8th October 2009, 12:07 PM
ah yeah....Forgot about the irs in this!

marvis
8th October 2009, 12:14 PM
Disk rear end too? Non vented though I'm guessing :(

The Kid
8th October 2009, 12:40 PM
Live axle rear end Marvis! Drum brake Borg Warner diff. I do wish it was IRS, but it will probably handle better this way anyway. Getting more or less the works from AJPS, coilovers based on RA60 struts, ST185 shocks, rebuilt brakes, Super Pro bushes etc etc, can't think of the rest right now but will list it all when it arrives, hopefully early next week as the camber tops have arrived from Cusco!

Actually Josh its the other way around there too haha, there is heaps of room in the rear, but the fronts have crazy poke, but will be perfect with camber.

marvis
8th October 2009, 01:15 PM
Oh, my bad. That sucks :P

I would have ran a 185 or 175 if you are not sliding.

The Kid
8th October 2009, 02:03 PM
Definately sliding, would have gone 175 like you said if I wasn't.

Just got these :))

I was looking at the shape of ma61 supra flares in comparison to the st141 arches......kinda similar...might be worth looking at maybe?

The Kid
9th October 2009, 04:26 PM
Maybe 185 50?

Looking good though :)

Yeah I think I might for the fronts when I can afford it. The lack of stretch compared to the back is already getting to me. Maybe stick with 55 profile though, 50 may look too small on a bigger car.

yer rear will be a bit of a headache, this shit is so sick though haha love it!

I found out last night that an RA60 diff is 10mm shorter each side, as well as a straight swap, so I'm going to use the diff from the same car I took the exhaust from before, which will make them tuck alot easier with less gaurd work :)

I was looking at the shape of ma61 supra flares in comparison to the st141 arches......kinda similar...might be worth looking at maybe?

Not a bad idea, but not really a fan of bolt on flares at all, MA61s being one of my least favourites, hehe

tough tough tough

Thanks! Are you sending my stuff through auspost or courier? I only gave you a P.O. box and I've just realised I don't think couriers will deliver to those, so let me know if you need a home adress man.

The Kid
20th October 2009, 08:40 PM
Have got some shit done, RA60 T series diff is in (higher final drive, 3.89 vs 3.42, and 10mm narrower each side).

Managed to crack my front lip some more by hitting the bushes next to where I park, zip tied that up sorta neatly. Somehow managed to put a big bow on the drivers side front gaurd, guessing from the wheel hitting the gaurd, it does that sometimes, thanks body roll. Also bought a black grill, only to realise it was way too wide (different headlights), so I just left it off for now.

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/5/8/2/26115.jpg

Oh and note theres a badge on the bonnet now, was missing when I bought the car. The rear wheels sit pretty much perfect now, won't need much more then a roll once it's lower.

Fingers crossed suspension arrives this week.

The Kid
20th October 2009, 09:24 PM
The one that was in it, ended up being the right length, but only 2 holes lined up. Ran out of time to drill those so is just running on 2 bolts atm. The recessed/raised bits don't mate properly either, but meh, it's kinda dodgy, might fix it later, might not.

The Kid
20th October 2009, 09:36 PM
You mean the centre bearing bit? Mine turned out to be a replacement once piece, but I am 99% sure a tail shaft from a manual RA60 will be perfect length and bolt up in the middle bit, xT14x and xA6x are the same underneath.

Joshie_Mcslide
20th October 2009, 10:11 PM
I put a mazda 626 diff in a 929 ages ago......had the same issue when i went to put the shaft back in....only 2 holes lines up,I just had the tailshaft drilled out to suit.....still a lil dodgy.....I was 16 or so at the time.....and twin spin line lockers were cool!!!
but even then I thought It was silly to be skidding with only 2 bolts in the shaft......Fix it up dude,or you'll die a horrible horrible death! lol

Lockers are cool......sorry i meant line lockers as in foot lock burnouts!

Line lockers is what we called them back in the day....hahaha,might be a bogan thing?
Where I grew up there were 2 types of people....horse people,ie trainers, riders, workers etc and car hoons.......that all drove v8 toranas and falcons and had/have mullets and moes!
My greatest mentor is the bigests bogan in the world...hahaha,He's mad ey!

if Ra60 is narrower, you should of gone rose joint 4 link and T serise (mounts are about 15mm out) which would give ya 20mm each side.

your right, 50 profile on 15's does look small but its not overly bad, the problem is you need you lower your car to suit the tyres so you have some tyre tucking, doesnt help that the corona guards flatten out at the top.

Dont even think of Ma61 overfenders... there well ugly and not worth the time/money buying them and making them fit.

if i was you i'd go 185/55 front 195/55 rear, would look real good strech wise

the good thing with the larger toyotas is the lower you go the better the wheels will fit... jono with his ra60 had 14x9 -27's with something like 175/65's??? and most of the tyre was under the guards

Konakid
22nd October 2009, 11:37 AM
Cant tuck fuck all tyre on the front of coronas, mine is barely covering the tyre yet x member is around 60mm from the ground.

Front guard height is too high compared to the rear, thats 80's toyota design for ya!

Joshie_Mcslide
22nd October 2009, 12:11 PM
yeah i was gunna say that.....my rona's pretty close to the ground,it hardly tucks the tred on a 175/65/14 at the front....no way you could tuck rim unless you ran wank factor 17 or 18's
lol

The Kid
22nd October 2009, 12:46 PM

Rose jointed 4 link = $$$ that I don't have, have pretty much spent everything I have on this now. Not sure what T series your talking about that is 20mm narrower each side though?

50 profile works on smaller cars, ie Corollas imo, but yeah definately need 55 like I have on anything bigger.

185s for the front would be excellent, I can't really find any grip tyres in that size though, they're all peasent spec. Was thinking today though that I wouldn't mind saving up and buying a pair of 8.5j or 9j Streets for the front. I really like the missmatched look, but I think Streets all round would look even doper.

Take the springs out!

Haha I thought about this, but gaurd would be sitting on the fronts, really needs camber. All my suspension is ordered, so it won't be long before it's lowdown anyway.

man that is a hot corona right there... i see mad potential for looks.

how low do you plan on going?
that last pic looks cool and all but i think you'll be dragging your sump around town :P

I want to go as low as that last pic definitely, I don't really drive anywhere anyway so wouldn't bother me too much. It will be as low as Konakids at the very least.

Cant tuck fuck all tyre on the front of coronas, mine is barely covering the tyre yet x member is around 60mm from the ground.

Front guard height is too high compared to the rear, thats 80's toyota design for ya!

I thought this may be the case, in the photochop I had to rotate the car to get equal tyre tuck front to rear. Might run a slight rake to combat that, might look even worse though, see how shit goes.

xsoarerx
22nd October 2009, 04:39 PM
humm... maybe i confused my self, isnt the ae86 T serise narrower than the Ra60 T serise?....

its not like your sliding the thing right? toyo make 185/55's get some for the front and 195/55's for the rear... just make sure your rear tyres are craper than the front and your sweet.

The Kid
22nd October 2009, 04:53 PM
I don't think so man, I think they're both 1410mm wide, just the mounts are different.

And yeah, building this for the sole purpose of sliding, should put up a list of the shit I ordered, would make it clearer :P Just checked out the Toyo website though, they do the T1R in 185/55, that would be pretty good. 9j with 195/55 would be even better though!

Robo86
22nd October 2009, 04:57 PM

Konakid
22nd October 2009, 05:38 PM
def go 195 dude, any less would be shit, as they came with 195's stock!

Im planning on running 8.5 all round on mine eventually with 195/55's.

xsoarerx
22nd October 2009, 08:38 PM
it would be fine man, your over thinking it. its only 10 extra milimeters remember.. ive run 195/50's on the front of my supra without a problem in the world. 185/55's in a decent tyre should be fine. remember unless you put a turbo on your motor, SR or a 1g even your really not going to be going too quick :P

lol, this is still tempting......but defeats the perpose of me selling in the first place, looking for something to go offroad with....thinking a mini monster truck sierra?? lol

I just noticed the different bars on this....well there the same as early st141 bars, but have the colour coded trim insted of chrome.....mine are plain black and poke out 1" further and the bar indicaters aren't enclosed! the smaller ones look neater! I might have a look around for a pair....but chrome!

Love your work! If you do sell it.....someone will be getting a mint* car!!

if you come down melbourne way to pick up that gx71 - i assume its josh's one - drive down perhaps? in the rona.... so i can buy it ;) perhaps... depends how much you're selling for. i should have cash ready to go after the weekend.

lol yeah I can understand that Josh, getting rid of a rad car for something you already have didn't make sense to me either, but I thought I'd try. And yeah, my bumpers look loads better then the bigger ones like on yours, the chrome trimmed ones would work well though with the blue.

And Keiichi that's actually not a bad idea man, I'm still trying to decide on what I really want with cars/life/everything at the moment, but will be letting you know for sure.
