View Full Version : How To: Flare Guards

1) Fit wheel and see how much flaring has to be done.
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/1/6/6/23185.jpg

2) Remove wheel and proceed to remove inner guard/plastic splash guard. Also, good time to take a photo for a "before" shot if you are keeping a record of it.
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/1/6/6/23186.jpg

3) Using hammer and dolly, flatten under the lip that normally has the inner guard screwed to it. This is to make it easier for the flaring part, and also means there is no sharp edge to the flare/guard.
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/1/6/6/23187.jpg

4) Use hammer and dolly again to flatten out the roll of the guard and make it continue to the same shape of the original factory flare. Take a bit of time, but the slower you do it, the better the result. Take it out to roughly where you need it then refit wheel and see if it is enough. If more is need simply work out it further until enough room is gained.

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/1/6/6/23189.jpg

5) Once shape is done, continue to work out the high and low spots and make it as smooth as can be had. Then use grinder/sander to remove old paint to prep it for painting. Give it a small swipe with bog then sand it all to shape to get out any imperfections in the metal work.

6) Prime and paint then stand back and admire.

And, If you get stuck or need a little guidance, recommend finding one of these:

nice little write up man. whats the difference between using a hammer and dolly or guard roller? just a neewb body worker here

the difference is, if you use a hammer and dolley, you dont need a guard roller.

if you have a little bit of panel beating skill/generally ok with tools, then you can get a neat job without the roller.

its basically the same thing, infact in a way, you can get a more uniform job by just using a hammer, as the roller is on a fixed radius, and the guard lip isnt always.

is it hard to just belt up the lip and keep the original shape to the guard? i dont have enough offset yet to fill the complete flare but need the lip out of my way

Dylan
20th September 2009, 07:18 PM
^ Won't be hard, if you use a heat gun aswell you might not even crack the paint

20th September 2009, 07:22 PM
Nope, not hard at all. I did my rears like that as I didn't need to flare them out. All I did was use the angle grinder to do a few small nicks on the lip so it folds under easier, but if you just go carefully, it will fold under fine. Just work across the whole length of the lip rather than trying to hit it all under in one go :)

wat do you guys do about getting the front part of the flare to stop hitting the wheel when you turn!! do you flare it out like mysh*tboxKE70 or just trim down the guard?

GOODY
22nd September 2009, 08:08 PM
Adjust castor or cut it, I adjusted mine to make it clear but I think that gives your front end less grip??

Nic19
22nd September 2009, 08:13 PM
yeh i wanted to flare it. think it would be more appropriate on a street car. its on slant front guard so i can change it wen i go flat front if i want

Konakid
22nd September 2009, 08:18 PM
just trim it down.

on my ke i trimed the gaurd lip where the liner fastens to back to about 5mm so that i could dress it up better with hammer dollie [ could almost file finish ], also when you look under there it looks a bit more of a professianal job

i run max castor on mine with 15 x 7.5 +17 ssr with a 25 bolton spacer.. and 205/55/15's and have no issues ...and my car is LOW

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/6/7/2/23628.jpg

Probably a stupid question but when you say you are running MAX castor, which way is considered + and - castor..?

I'm running 15 x 8 -0 offset 195/50's with xt130 lca's and I had to adjust the castor back so the rims would clear the front inner of the guard..

Konakid

mysh*tboxke70: Why such big tyres? should run a 50 profile, then you could bring the front down another 30mm or so.

Try a 195/50.

Stock ae86/ke70 castor rods should net you about +3.5 degrees.

It will rub, just get out the grinder and trim the front of the guard.

car is too low...
on 13's its 50 mm
on 14's its 65mm
on 15 x 6.5 with a 195/55 its 80 mm
also i got a pair of proxies for $80 brand new...

sorry but your exhuast doesnt count for being low.

Do you guys think this method of flaring would allow me to turn the following?
Currently hits the front of the guard quite a lot when turning.

The front isnt even that low.

Run a 205/50 or 195/50 and she will be apples. You'll clear everything you hit now too.

i trimmed the lip on my gaurds where the plastic meets the metal so it was all the same size the whole way around the gaurd. this allows it to look decent on the inside and also if cops run there hand along it and its tapped down correctly it will feel like a un touched gaurd ( so not hacked)

^Thats what I did with mine, I was running heaps of castor and I trimmed the front and then folded a new lip over.

I love my hammer and dolly set..Paid like nothing for it but I love smashing stuff with it.

Yellow car needs to wind the LCA's in dude.
HELL YES.. Your not running s13 front are you? That is WAYYYYY too much track.

there ok for this but the cars sheet metal its to hard for the supercheap kit and will dent the crap out of the dollys and hammers. get a decent GPI set (last ya good 10yrs if ya look after them) for ya back yard work, you and your car will love you for them. (there cheap $150-$250) but there more then decent enough for all pannel work on your car. get a metal file $50-$100 for an awsome finnish.

im pretty sure 99% of guys on here would take the super cheap option for hammer and dolly set, for a job that is only done a few times i couldnt warrent sepending even near $100 for a dolly kit etc.

best file ive found is the good ol flapper disc on a grinder, 120 grit and smoother finish than a babys bum

Hey everyone, sorry for digging up an old thread but i was told a ke70 front guard arch will fit on the back arch of an ae86 and am considering this to remove my flares as they are quite messy and hacked underneath and also can help me get lower due to arch being welded on abit higher. Would just like to know if anyone on here has done this? some tips would be great and sorry if this is in the wrong thread i did abit of searching and had no luck.

Thanks

Ke70 arch's wont fit on an 86.
you will notice ke70 front are a "full" flare - but the ae86 is only 3/4 because it stops at the rear bar.
You can put fronts on rears but you need to keep it either ae86 or ke70, their not interchangable, + when you do do it you also need to "cross" the flairs over
SO - FRont Right goes on back left & Front left goes on back right.

And Whoever owns that yellow 70 up top needs to loose the Sigma LCA's or S13 LCA's - way to much track
even if you folded out both lips you wouldnt even go near getting close to the outside of that wheel.
also - if thats a 195/50 that rim must only be 6 - 6.5" wide
