Hi Team.

In the beginning, people thought AE86's were cool, xE7x's were the poor mans AE86, and that I was coked out of my brain for even thinking about turning a spanner on my XT130.

Nothing has changed. Love you guys.

I figured it's about time I made a build thread, as i'm finally making headway.

I could rattle off the specs, but it's not about the specs list. Unless you're a wookie.

IT'S ABOUT THE STORY, BRO.

I recieved this car in the summer of 2005 from my grandmother. It has had no other owners, although some have attempted. I win.

It looked something like this after owning it for a few months. I fitted what would be, to date, it's most notorious modification:
The racing stripe:

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/2/4/3/544194.jpg (http://s64.photobucket.com/user/funkyboyjaval/media/coronaplateless-2.jpg.html)

Oh, it also had this:
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/2/4/3/24126.jpg

I tried to put these on it:

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/2/4/3/24127.jpg

Which resulted in a wheel falling off thanks to dodgy autobarn wheelnuts.

A few more hits from the crack pipe resulted in this:

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/2/4/3/24128.jpg

There were spaghetti stains on there when it was fitted.

I didn't take any more photos for the next few years.

It served me well as a daily / parts / band bus for all that time though. Did a few consumable items on it, clutch, water pump, alternator. It got broken into, also.

I then one day got motivated. After thinking of every which way i could execute every fucking engine conversion in creation, i settled on one of the easiest. And with all that motivation swelling up inside of me, got off my but, determined to do something about it. I washed the car.

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/2/4/3/24129.jpg

And wonkily fitted some MA61 seats and AE82 Twinky wheel, the former of which are is giving me back problems. Great job.

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/2/4/3/24130.jpg

And decided this was what I wanted it to look like:
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/2/4/3/24131.jpg

And somehow that's covered about 4 years of ownership. Sad, really. I hadn't really done anything.

Then I bought this:

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/2/4/3/24132.jpg

I opened it up and saw this:

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/2/4/3/24133.jpg

I swore.

So i did some of this:
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/2/4/3/24134.jpg

And some of this:

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/2/4/3/24135.jpg

And to stop myself going insane doing the former, i did this:.

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/2/4/3/24136.jpg

And after a long time, I finally bought this:

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/2/4/3/24137.jpg

Yeah konakid has no hektik photoshop skillz. Who would photoshop my car apart from me?

Hey is that Josh M in the background at the Holden dealership?

Yeah it is, actually. We work next to eachother. It's fun.

On another note, the 'rona will be recieving some love this weekend.

An on-its'-way-out LHF wheel bearing has spurred me to get some RA65 struts, fresh rotors, fresh pads and wheel bearings, possibly some shitty monroe inserts pending price. Otherwise i'll throw in the shitty monroe inserts which are in the XT130 struts :DD. Wheel bearing makes noise, car gets brake upgrade. Go figure.

Huw gets teh massiv love for the hubs and bearings.

Javal
4th October 2009, 09:51 PM
A fubar'd wheelbearing forced me to accelerate my plans (it's not like my car is capable of accelerating anything other than repairs) and take care of all the front end brakes while they were apart. Apologies for the crap phone pictures.

A trip to the U pull it found me this

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/2/4/3/24851.jpg

And not too much later, my wheelbarrow looked like this.

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/2/4/3/24852.jpg

I also pinched a standard handbrake button and spring, as my dorifto AE82-rear-seat-knob-come-drift-button was making my car just that bit too 15 year old for my liking.

Also, if you ever get struts from U-pull-it, be sure to take the rotors off. They charge $30/ea for used rotors. Unfortunately i didn't have the mind to bring the cordless rattlegun, and paid $60 for something i didn't at all want and nobody in their right mind would use. 2nd hand brake parts don't exactly tickle my fancy.

So i ripped the old shit out, put new Monroe shocks in the RA60 struts so they had something that worked in them. Fitted new DBA RA65 rotors to hubs with new races and bearings courtesy of slide86. Put the XT130 strut tops on the RA60 struts. Put nice ferodo pads in the calipers. Bolt together, leave to bake for 2 hours at 180 degress, then you get this:

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/2/4/3/24853.jpg

(I told you the pics were crap)

Alas, it was not to be so simple. The time came to install the steering arms. Now unfortunately the strut bolt spacing on the RA60 and XT130 are NOT the same. This would have made my life ALOT easier if it were. Installed one steering arm and found the strut to be fouling a little bit on the swaybar at straight ahead. Poop. This is because the hole in the steering arm for the balljoint is offset ~5mm to the outside of the arm. This also reduces track by ~5mm / side. Poop.

Switched the steering arms left to right, bolted up. Good clearance to swaybar. MASSIVE toe out -

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/2/4/3/24854.jpg

That's with the steering wheel straight ahead, mind you 8|

Good thing the XT130 has massive amounts of adjustment. This also pushed the tie rod end angle way beyond what it should be, which was a major bummer. Screwed it all back together again, put wheels oonnnnn.....ohwait. flipped steering arms were fouling the rims. FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU ensued.

Realizing i would have to drive the car out of here one way or another, I re-reversed the steering arms, bolted it up. Wheel aligned it back to normal. While i was on the ground, i then realized that the struts were only fouling on the swaybar when the suspension was at full droop and the steering was straight ahead. Epic win.

So i have win brakes, shocks that work and very dirty hair. A hard day of work for a 'bolt in' brake upgrade. Yeah, right.

Oh also, during the process of all of this, a man who stores a truck in AJPS grounds, decided it'd be a good idea to do this:

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/2/4/3/24855.jpg

No, he's jumpstarting the truck using the suzuki.

Minor Update:

Over the past 2 days the 'Rona made a 450km round trip (on less than a tank, mind you) having to pass through the Adelaide hills without cooking itself, 3 up with a boot full of amps and the A/C cranking on said blindingly hot days.

This has however resulted in a minor problem, once again forcing me to start doing some work on my car.

Once again, a tale for you:

You see, the thing about owning a nearly-30 year old car with shitty Holden parts in it, is that eventually somethings just wear out from excessive removal and re-fitment.

In this case, my car has had a few clutches done in its time. This obviously necessitates removing the gearbox, and as such the gear lever. Unlike the K, T, W, G series or pretty much any other Toyota gearbox, the 'good 'ol Borg-Warner 505' does not secure its shifter to the extension housing with bolts. It instead has a large threaded area, and in fact the whole shifter screws into the gearbox.

The flaw in this design is that after many removals and re-installations, and a few years of mechanical abuse by my more naive younger self, is that the large threaded are where is screws into will actually increase in diameter and result in the shifter popping-up by one thread. If you re-tighten it, then you are likely to crack the housing.

This has happened to me. I have no reverse, sort of. It's difficult to select and can only be done when the gearbox is warm. Not much good to me. As such, it's time for a change.

I am now on the hunt for an 18R-C, running, complete. Drop me a line if you have one.

There is method behind my madness.

Ok, so not one, but TWO 18R-C's have been secured for this vehicle. One is currently residing at my residence, the other is to be picked up this weekend if i can ever tee up a time with the guy.

The plan goes like this: One of the 18R's has a few nice trick bits, such as: 1mm o/s pistons, completely reco'd head, new timing gear, new clutch, new water pump etc.

It has however been sitting for 2 years : / This means the rust in the bores is going to be so much that i have to have it machined out oversize, which means new pistons, which defeats one of the prime points of the exercise (my cheapness, and the fact that an 18R-C is not worth putting new pistons in).

So, i secured another. Fairly fresh out of the car, but 60% cylinder leakage. A 32/36 and adaptor kit were also included.

So, in the next few weeks, they do the mash. The monster mash. And the leftover parts head to the dump.

You did indeed miss something. The 18R-C is being put in as a stop-gap while i build up the 18R-G. That said, by putting in the 18R-C i will be installing some key components required for the R-G, such as the diff, gearbox, tailshaft and dash.

I don't know it's a P-51, i'd have to disassemble it to check.

Small update:

Today i actually managed to find some time to do some work on the 18R-C's sitting up at AJPS. In little time i removed the head of the 'good-but-neglected' one, and was very happy to see only a very small amount of surface rust in only one bore. Woo.

So, it will now just be getting a rings and bearings rebuild, instead of 're-blocking' the internals to the other motor. I've left the bore with minor rust soaking in petrol for the week, after that i'll put it on the engine stand and give it a quick going over with the bottle brush hone, ready for a rebuild.

Minor win.

Managed to fire it up again and take it for a spirited run this evening. Something about 'blowing out the cobwebs' comes to mind....

I've come to realize it sort of has reverse. Sort of. I was pretty hungover when i made my initial diagnosis. I can get it into reverse, but it requires sort of getting the selector as far as it will go (which is still not enough), then bringing up the clutch with my foot on the brake to 'pop' it into reverse. Not good. After that it can be selected freely from neutral as long as i don't put it in any other gear. Once i perform the same technique to get it back into first, it's gone again.

Regardless, the gearbox is royally borked.

On a lighter note, it's really good to just drive the car again, even if it is still starfire powered and can't really go backwards. It ran very well with a bit of 98 octane shoved down the gullet, and i'd really forgotten how much the fitment of the RA60 struts changed the handling of the car for the better. Stiffer and much more progressive (over factory fit oil shocks, mind you) and the better brakes are a godsend on the downhill run.

Knocking down the 18R-C this weekend, if anyone cares.

More fuck arounds with the motor, the machinist thinks the bores may already be too large and after honing the piston-bore clearance will be too large.

Spent this evening stripping my 2nd block. I may not have to use it, if it turns out, once i give them the pistons the clearance will be ok. Not happy though.

No updates, i've just spent all the money i was saving for getting the conversion done on touring around the country with the band getting famous lol.

I quote myself from 4 months ago to illustrate how little progress this car has had.

For a while this project stalled. Some would say it 'shot a rod'.

After having lots of trouble getting my head around all the fucking stupid shit the peanuts at HMGem did to my motor when they 'rebuilt' it, i've finally go the bottom end PROPERLY together. This took about 20 strip, measure and refits to get everything right. FUCK MY LIFE.

Got saturday off work, so, I decided to go to work, to work on my 18R.

Head on, RA28 Cam in (higher lift / longer duration, YO!) timed up, rockers on, clearances set.

Currently in the process of cleaning off the horrific job I did of painting the cam cover almost a year ago.

Few more things have to be painted (sump, gearbox stays) then the long motor is complete.

Then just rebuild the 32/36 and the distributor, and she's done!

Also, I need an RT132. Who has one for me?

Put in some more effort tonight.

Here's Javals easy peasy wiring harness removal guide.

Step 1: The xT13x series does not have a seperate engine / body loom like the xE7x and xE8x does. It's a one piece item that runs through the guards. So, step 1, take EVERYTHING off:

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/2/4/3/61906.jpg

Step 2: Find heaps of rust you didn't know about

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/2/4/3/61907.jpg

Step 3: Curse

Step 4: Keep going, call it a night only mildly closer to having the loom out than when you started.

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/2/4/3/61908.jpg

That's all folks. I need recommendations as to who I should take the 'Rona to so the rust can be cut out, and I might as well bite the bullet and get it painted at the same time. KGO SUGGESTIONS.

Maybe I'll get a tercel swaybar or two for the rear while i'm at it to firm up the rear end. I could also upgrade to the big-boy XT130 struts and brakes for a cheap upgrade. I also heard a 202 bolts straight in. Ma61 seats are also a good alternative to hollowing out the bottom of my KE70 buckets. Fit an AE82 twincam steering wheel, take the rear seats and carpet out and it'll pretty well be a pedigree certified RACE CAR.

Javal
17th April 2011, 07:15 PM
Interestingly, windscreen and rear window removal (without breaking them) is not as difficult a task as I envisaged.

Rear of the car is fully stripped, next step is to get it on the hoist, have a set of dolly wheels fabbed up and drop the front suspension out, remove the towbar and rear bumper. I think it'll be ready for paint then.

All that has to come off now is the towbar / rear bumper / all the bits in the engine bay. Then it's go-time.

All the panels are now at luc's shop so it's now all in his hands (and my wallet!).

Of course other parts of the car will be getting reco'd while this is all going on. Engine is almost finished (waiting on extractors and I have to grind the step out of the manifold / adaptor plate), then front struts and suspension!

I'll get luke to put up some pictures of where it is now. I haven't seen it in a while but I imagine there is lots less of the boot area still attached to the car.

Also, here are some pictures of a tractor motor.

Those extractors I keep talking about...

Need to get a flange welded on (as the old system had NO flanges at all, had to hacksaw the bastard off the car), sandblasted and painted up.

I'll probably heat wrap them after that to help prevent heat soak in the engine bay (being a non-crossflow carby motor and all, it will have a more dramatic effect than on a 4AG for example). Also so I can look like a fucking sick hectic race car driver.

Ah ok then $500 isnt too bad.. So can you put a RT104 front end on a xt130, or it doesn't interchange like KE70 and AE71? Because from my understanding RT104 is leaf rear?

Well can't ignore this. To be honest not much has changed. Started straightening the doors out last week. But over the last couple months sorting out my own life has been more prioritie b4 you say anything about the work I'm doin on my own car almost all of it is being done during work hrs on the sly. Between my wife and kids looking for a new job, maintaining my house etc. I am finDing almost no time at all to even go to the workshop to do anything. I have heaps to do including another car for a family friend. We'll see how the next few weeks pan out as my own issues come into line. If your over it and don't wanna wait then by all means look for someone else otherwise I will continue to work towards getting time to work on it and get some progress happening.

Here's why. A very average repair done back in 1983 leaving the front of the guard quite weak.

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/2/4/3/399443.jpg
There was a big rusty section in my passenger door. Note the big cutout section.

Sooooo we decided to just take the whole door and lower radiator support, along with most of the A pillar out of the donor car.

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/2/4/3/399445.jpg
And we did. And we made a mess of AJPS in the process. Don't worry dave, I cleaned up.

No pictures for now as they're all wrapped up in sheets for their own protection and photos aren't really doing the colour justice, maybe one sunny day i'll pull them out, dust them down and take some happy snaps.

Engine is still under wraps, however my gasket kit is on the way and i've started on my custom wiring harness, so it shouldn't be long until i've got some pics of my predictable choice of powerplant.

Also for those interested, i got the warm 18R that was originally destined for the engine bay of this car running in its new home yesterday, and it's a fucking pearler. Kinda sad that it went to a new home, but it's making way for bigger and better things :)

Alright, so my 18R-GEU is coming along nicely. Everything's getting neatened up / cleaned up / refurbished as required. So currently it looks like this:

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/2/4/3/502901.jpg

Front suspension is on it's way to being sorted.

XT130 / RT132 front struts (have, stripping currently for paint) WITH
TRD Green shock absorbers (have)
AJPS Custom springs (5kg/mm, custom height) (ordered)
LN106 Hilux Calipers (source found, awaiting payday)
Peugeot 604 Rotors (awaiting payday)
RT132 hubs with new wheelbearings (have)

XT130 LCAs, new bushes and balljoints (have)
Rebushed castor arms
O/S swaybar to try and counteract the weight of the 18R-G (yet to look into, ideas?)

I should really start looking into refurbishing my steering box and idler arm. Ugh.

Javal
23rd December 2012, 01:15 PM
thought about a KE70 steering rack conversion?

Of course I have, what do you take me for?

Why am I not going down that path? Difficulty.

xT13x have forward bowing crossmembers which are totally unsuitable for R&P conversions. KE70 crossmember needs to be narrowed approx 20-30mm to bolt up to the rails, engine mounts will have to be custom as the R-series (up to 21R) have engine mounts right up the front of the block (hence forward bowing crossmember), sump will have to be changed to a hilux style front-bowl and even then it'll need heavy modification to clear the rack. Then working out a column / intermediate shaft combo to make it all work. Lots of effort, I'd like to actually be able to drive the thing at some point in the next decade.

It's of note, how little of the work i'm doing to this car requires ANY modification or custom work to be done. There are only a few bits and pieces that are going to require fabrication or have to be custom made. Kind of goes to show, if you do your homework, you can indeed 'bolt in and win' with factory components.

Given that i'm going for a 'neat street' and weekend spirited drive car, I don't actually think it's going to be particularly detrimental given my application of the vehicle.

In summary, despite the thread title, 'because hard and not racecar'.

A year or two after completion, i'll have built and installed the big-pistoned, reasonably cammed, aftermarket ECU'd 'angry man' 18R-G. If I ever get bored with that or want greater reliability, i'll go BEAMS and do an R&P conversion then.

Progress, progress.

Spent the day in the sun and removed the original BW diff from this car, removed the ST141 BW disc rear end from my RT132 donor car, fitted the XT130 BW to the donor car to keep it rolling. Pulled my RT132 struts down ready for a bath in the hot-tank. Disc brakes are going on the T-series from my RT132 daily, which in return will receive the ST141 BW with drums. As soon as I can get my W50 to BW tailshaft back, which is out on loan. Doing the same job 3 times, lol!

Finally managed to pick up my front suspension and crossmember after powdercoating. Looks schmick.

That's MOST of the front end right there. Still have to work out what i'm doing for a swaybar as whiteline no longer make a front bar for the xT13x chassis. Funny, they did when I started... Also i'm still waiting on the discs and springs, but they're only a few days away, so I'll have plenty to keep me occupied.

Pulled the calipers off the disc diff ready to send off and have rebuilt - my 'box o brakes'

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/2/4/3/503434.jpg

It occurred to me while looking at this picture - that is a lot of brakes. My car doesn't weigh that much. This is going to be good!

Big day today.

Spent a good number of hours with the wire brush head on the 4" grinder in preparation for rebuilding my calipers. Here they are half way done -

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/2/4/3/503573.jpg

They will get some more love when they're pulled down and I can really get in there with a smaller wire brush head. I'll be doing these myself, alongside the brake mechanic at work, who volunteered to help in exchange for a decent bottle of scotch after I was quoted over $800 to have them redone at a shop. Eek.

Also yanked my trailing arms out ready for rebushing, my old dash harness, pedalbox, rear shocks are all out and destined for the bin. Pulled the rear discs off the BW Disc diff, axles out, handbrake and mounting plates off ready for strip / clean / re-assemble at work.

Additionally I pulled my S1 dash cluster out of my daily to see if my S2 cluster would plug straight in. It won't. I really hoped it would, but it won't. I have next week off. So in that time, I'm going to remove the dash and dash wiring from the S2 RT132, remove the dash and dash wiring from my S1 RT132 daily, fit the S2 dash and wiring to the S1, then fit the S1 gear to the XT130. That should kill 3 days easily, then the diff and brake swap with the S1 daily and the XT. Then I will drink a beer I think.

OOOOH MY GOD. That was the worst job to do, ever.

Swapping all of the wiring AND components around should mean that you can plug everything in and it should all work first go. No, not in this case.
Heaps of custom patch harnesses. Cut and shuts. Missing connectors. Connectors totally lopped off. WHOLE BRANCHES OF THE HARNESS MISSING CAUSE SOMEONE CUT THE FUCKING THING OFF.

Much frustration. Anyway, I did it. The RT132 liftback starts and runs and lives again. But now it has no diff in it, as the diff swap to a Borg Warner while retaining standard drums on it is now under way. This way the XT130 can have a Toyota T-series with ST141 rear disc brakes. Both diffs are stripped and removed, and getting the lower rear trailing arm mounts swapped over (BW lower mount has mounting for the brake lines and the shock mount is further inboard) and swaybar mounts (RT132 has no rear swaybar!!)

Also, re-assembly is going well!

I got the heater core checked and flushed, courtesy of City Radiators. Despite the name being misleading (albert park =/= city) these guys do top work for the right price and they're quick too!
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/2/4/3/504530.jpg

Which meant the Heater box could go in, along with my nicely powdercoated pedalbox and adjustable steering column. Floor vent channels are in too, however I can't put any more HVAC gear in until the engine harness is in place due to access restrictions.
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/2/4/3/504531.jpg

So, steering column in, pedalbox, brake booster, clutch master, front brake lines, heater box. Engine bay kinda looks like an engine bay.
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/2/4/3/504532.jpg

Trimmed my backing plates so I can still use them with the C/P/H conversion. Good old eyecrometer made sure these trimmings were 'pretty good, mate'.

My 'to do' list. Best idea to get a whiteboard.

And the overall dismal state of my cars.
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/2/4/3/504535.jpg

More updates when my springs and diff are done.

EDIT - ALSO I NEED NEW LITTLE RUBBER BUMP STOPPERS FOR THE BRAKE AND CLUTCH PEDAL. ANY IDEAS?

Yes very much so. That shot was at the height of todays work, When I left everything was neatly squared away as usual. I took it when you sort of stand back and think '....what the fuck have I done'.

As for the bump stops, yes they're very much a generic item - in fact I have two more in my old XT130 pedalbox, however getting them out in one piece is the challenge. They have a tapered rubber 'neck' on them with a thinner section after so they push and lock in. Pulling them out usually involves breaking them. Oh well. I'll see if they're still available from toyota, thank god for toyodiy.com

Alright. What the dickens have I been doing.

Had a bit of a wait on some components, so I took to as much as I could with the wire wheel.
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/2/4/3/505105.jpg

And painted everything I couldn't get powdercoated.
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/2/4/3/505106.jpg
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/2/4/3/505107.jpg

I FINALLY got my front springs. I suppose that's what I get for going custom height and rate.
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/2/4/3/505108.jpg

So now I can finally assemble my C/P/H front end. Lots of people say that this is a 'heavy' strut / setup to fit, I wouldn't disagree with them although it's not too much heavier than the standard corona strut -

Complete standard RT132 strut, top to tail WITH caliper 22.2kg
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/2/4/3/505109.jpg

C/P/H Setup, top to tail WITHOUT caliper 21.3kg
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/2/4/3/505110.jpg

Hilux Caliepr 5.1kg
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/2/4/3/505111.jpg

So all up it weighs in at 26.2kg, only 4kg heavier than standard.

So, I took the dolly out, put some jackstands under it and bolted them in.
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/2/4/3/505112.jpg

Then got word i'm going to be waiting until monday for my steering knuckles and trailing arms to be finished at the powdercoater, I swore a bit. So they're just kind of hanging there cause I can't bolt it all up without the knuckles.

I put my steering box with new pitman, new idler arm and drag link in too.
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/2/4/3/505113.jpg

Front end specs!
RT132 strut tops
RT132 spring hats
AJPS springs. 4.5kg/mm 330mm free length
RT132 Strut casing
TRD Green front shock cartridges
RT132 Hubs
Modified Peugeot 604 rotor, RDA, slotted and 'dimpled'
LN106 Hilux caliper, rebuilt
XT130 lower control arms, rebuilt with slimline balljoints
Standard castor arms, steering knuckles, suspension pickups.
All new suspension bushes, Superpro.
Steering box serviced with new seals and oil.
Pitman arm and Idler arm replaced (new)
Standard tie rod tubes with new ends

I think that's all.

Next week i'll have it on the ground rolling as everything is ready to bolt the diff in and rear brakes on too.

Anyway, big updates today.

Got these back from the powdercoater finally.

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/2/4/3/505378.jpg

So that meant I could finally put my car on the ground. So I did.

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/2/4/3/505379.jpg

First time on all 4 wheels since May 2011. Big achievement for me.

Unfortunately, I had the shock mounts on the diff moved too far inboard so the shocks don't fit on, it's just resting on standard springs. I'll take the diff back out tomorrow night and have the mounts moved about 30mm each outboard. It's a shame since I put HEAPS of effort into cleaning up the diff and now it's going to have to be ground and welded on. Awwh.

Anyway, after getting it rolling about an hour later I immobilized it again ready to pull the diff, again.

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/2/4/3/505380.jpg

Oh also, XT130 and RT142 EFI fuel tanks are almost identical. bolt in EFI gear FTMFW. Filler neck and level sender need to be switched over, and that's it. Winning.

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/2/4/3/505381.jpg

That's all. I'll take some pictures of the diff tomorrow because it looks really snazzy.

Holy Crap... ok... ill resisit the impulse for marriage and/or breeding comments at this point. but I may be overcome with urges of singing a song about you being my hero.... But I will clarify my reaction... I just blundered on this posting while attempting to trouble shoot a temp gauge issue..

However I think you will be able to relate to a great deal of things with me here...

I own a (selectable) 4Wd tercel. With tow bar. Not registered. Needs an exhaust mount rubber(s?) replaced and some rust under the front window.. Long Story, not interesting. Possibly long term needs a new water pump. Only got it to drive while my corona wasn't. (if anyone wants tercel, it is the only car I will consider selling... but that is not why I am posting message)

I ALSO own a Corona Fastback (18RC, 5 speed) unregistered, Goes. (aka, the 4 door celica) which is a sports car project I ran out of $$, time and Contacts for. Which I feel like breaking random stuff when i discover another dot of rust on. /Needs/ panel beating, respraying, body work, and same front window issue as Tercel above. Has pimped velour interior rescued from several other fast backs that previous owner lacked driving skill to match their ego and sold to wreckers. Lucky for me, not for them. After my /needs/ my /WANTS/ are engine pimpage and polishing and so on. It goes but looks :o( (got your attention yet?)

I ALSO have the earthy remains of a 1985(?) 18R hilux ute. With complete air conditioner and engine, but no rear diff, running gear or gear box. (getting interesting?)

I also own 2x (yes 2) xt130 (xt131) corona wagons. (All my coronas are the 4 square light variety (xt130 stylez). In other words if all of them were parked on a railway crossing and some horrible collision resulted in the fronts being separated from the back, you would have trouble telling which car front matches the backs. (sure i don't have your attention yet?)

One is unregistered in our garage with factory starfire, has surface rust spots, otherwise mint. Obtained for parts after it fell in my lap from God or whoever. It also by god has a tow ball fitted. Which is causing me much frustration attempting to relieve it of for a transplant. (Still don't have your attention?)

The other... is a currently registered(yup!) and driven daily 18r powered (pre california spec *manly grunting muchly* (it means has a few more horsies and compression from factory)) xt130(xt131) which I converted from my grand dads 1970's corona sedan after I /eventually/ got it after he died many years ago. (hello attention!) It also happens to be my first car from all those years ago.
I also got my wife a proton. But we don't like to talk about that. Forget I even said the P word. *cough*

So ya - I think we need to talk. :P

Sadly I am not a mechanic, and the 4 variations of R series workshop manuals I have are of little help - other than completely confusing the issue of what the KW/HP of these engines actually are. (anything from 90 to 120 KW or HP.. pfft damned if i know)

However - I would like to point out the following. Most you probably know, but should also get your attention -

The XT130/131 series engine bay, contains 2 very important things. Those 2 bendy bits of crap on the side of the Starfire, is an adaptor, that allows you to bolt nearly anything with the word "holden" stamped on it that was made for a commodore in the early 80's in there. Even things with V's in them. The engine itself is basically a 6 cylinder in line holden commodore engine (and will take ALL the parts off one; including the after market cast iron gears) - except somehow they managed to misplace two of them, giving you only 4 pistons in the engine that eventually drove out of the factory; after holden workers popped over to the Toyota plant to touch it inappropriately. The only problem is, the engine bay is not long enough for most of them, even tho the rest is a simple bolt on from the wheel arches back. If you are crazy you could pull the radiator off and put on a hotrod style extended nose I suppose, then anything would go in there.

I also recall seeing a car exactly like yours in ebay with said holden 6 banger with all 6 intact, with a dual upright carbys a few years back.. I wasn't sure if i should laugh or cry.

Speaking for the wagon variety of the xt130/131 - The starfire engine, has a plastic timing gear (ok fibre, same difference where it matters) so is crap for anything hard... as it tends to shear off every 20,000kms; but due to the weights involved; it is gravy for hard acceleration up to max 35 km/h. Including as I once discovered due to the heavy duty suspension popped in there for Aussie conditions, taking it over motor bike jumps, all 4 wheels air time, and parking on a 45 degree gradient. After 35km/h well you know what that's like. Assuming you don't push it too hard it also has the ground clearance and agility to go places any 4wd can, so long as its not too slippery, (its agile, but its still a old school wrong wheel spins differential).

The stock gear box from memory, has ratios of adequate overlap in the RPM scale (in the 4 speed variety) that you could have easily forgot to put 3rd gear in and still have no trouble driving to work without it. Then again, if you do use 3rd gear, it goes up to 125km/h before you need to really consider how worthwhile 4th gear is either. Why they essentially put in a 3 speed, and then split 3rd gear into two i have no idea, but i gather it is the same reason why all the California spec anti pollution garbage in there to choke your horses.

It can also stop (much to the surprise of the defensive driving instructor who failed miserably when trying to use it as an example of the difference between modern ABS and non abs breaking) in distances which appear to defy the laws of physics. And corners like you're driving it on rails.

One last point of note between an 18r and a starfire. For reasons I have never been able to explain - if you run the starfire with no mufflers, its sounds a hell of a lot nicer than the 18R. The difference is like comparing a V8 with a freight train.

Ok you likely know all that... I am guessing you are curious what (SOHC)18R brings to the party in an Xt130/131 series. Before I go there, I would like to point out the following. The 18R has a very fine pedigree known as the "R series" the highlights of this family is the 16R(g?) which had 30 more ponies hidden in the glove box, almost all the parts (bar the DOHC bits of importance) are interchangeable with the rest of the R family; and as it was one of the first DOHC engines made, was considered about 30 years ahead of its time. The R series, in Japan, was generally considered a "truck" engine and was also used in buses, small trucks, and utes! - which given they stuck it in a 800kg body in the corona's (and celicas), makes it all the more awesome. And of course you found the 18RG.. so i gather you have an idea of this little known cult of Toyota.
On the other hand when your XT130/131 is 18R powered, you gain a lot of extra weigh up front, which makes the car handle significantly different to when it was starfire. It feels heavier up front, and turns in a lot sooner than the starfire. The starfire could be considered "slippery" but the R is positively drifty. Given you seem to have done a "million dollar man" job on the brakes and suspension i gather you knew that already. Make sure you do some magic with your DIFF too - during my parts travels, Coronas and Celicas from which too much fun was had, tend to need a new one. Also - try to keep your 2 part drive shaft, it makes the rear suspension work like its fully independent - once again apparently defying the laws of physics where cars are concerned. In my one I didn't have an engineer with the skill so i transplanted the single piece one. Great on road, but it lost its off-road appeal :( :(

ok for the heart transplant side of things. Once you remove those 2 flappy metal bits off the side from the starfire, you discover... 1970's Toyota compliant industry standard Toyota engine bay mounts. Which mate with pretty much anything Toyota from the era. Nice. If you hadn't messed with the steering, or the sway bar, your next problem would have been the sump cover. Just get one out of the fastback model of the same appearance, and the entire engine will simply bolt in. Next, you may need to steal your alternator from the starfire, dont worry there is enough adjustment in the the bits between the two it will slip right in there too.

As for the wiring loom, you just need to redirect a couple of starter motor wires, and throw out all the anti pollution bits.
To convert to the xt130/131 cable driven accellerator, just grab a bit of angle iron, drill 2 holes in it, and attach it to the rear (unused) mount point in the rocker cover - flat side on top, angle side DOWN and vertical - like an upside down chair. Pull off all the levery crap if you didnt already; Run the cable to that, You may need the "round cable thingy" off the starfire transplanted too to terminate the cable. You will see what i mean. Everything else, including the gearbox, should just fit. The rubber "baffle(?)" at the ass end of the gearbox may need one stolen from the round headlight version of the corona to sit nicely.

Next problem, the 2 part drive shaft wont go between gearbox and diff. 2 options here - 1 - change the diff (this will require a fair bit of reengineering). 2 - Use a one part driveshaft off a round headlight version corona. theres about 3 sizes of them oddly, trial and error it, you should find one. Next issue, the "cover" at the front end of drive shaft will not slide fully into the gearbox! argh... ok its purely aesthetic, it runs fine like that, but otherwise you may need to get the drive shaft customised.

Next problem, radiator... disaster, nether fit. Solution - take the factory one with a round headlight one to a radiator specialist, have them steal the mounts off the factory one, and attach to the round headlight version where the pipes all line up. It should now bolt right on no issues at all.

Next problem the radiator cowling.. ugh.. however you do it, it doesnt fit exactly, but there is enough space all around you can just use the one that came factory for now, or remove it entirely, or get one custom engineered.

Next Problem - exhaust; the 18R manifold is by any other small car standards a set of factory extractors, which for some odd reason, they usually weld onto a y bit, and make it single pipe exhaust BOOOO.
As a result the "normal" 18r header ass bit is off centre.. and wont align to the factory exhaust tubs. However a good exhaust guy can simply add an extra bit bent slightly to bring it into line with the rest of the channel for the pipe.

What else have I done? (my boo was a big hint) I fitted a varax exhaust with a custom end so i have symmetrical dual exhaust out the back. (My project was aiming for a mockrod/hotrod look, all look no power.. long way to go sadly) I still have that cursed "y" bit at the end of the header - but its been widened to a larger pipe, that goes to the varax which splits it back to 2 smaller ones for the looks. Not to a purist dual exhaust, but has the airflow of one, so happy enough there.

What CAN be done? ok if you want more than just looks and sounds. Make the following notes. Wildcat extractors. Webber (or lynx) side draught manifold. Dual or single carb (side draught). This stuff pops up on ebay every now and again, and its all bolt right on... tuning is probably a bastard tho.

Fuel? R series engines' happy place seems to be around 92 to 94 octane. Anything more and although the octane selector will do it, your engine gets a bit... odd; and starts doing bad things to your spark plugs. Still runs, but you need to clean and swap them out more. Mechanics will tell you it runs engine hotter too, but the R series in my experience runs pretty cool to begin with, it just seems to be the parts where fuel goes bang that cop the most of it. Also remember in Australia what it says on the pump is often 1-2 higher than it ACTUALLY is. Which means 100 is usually 98, 98 is usually 96, 95 is usually 93. And normal unleaded? May as well put kerosine in there. (no don't do that; but you need to retune it specially for what fuel you plan to run in it)

18R fuel economy. It is pretty damn high. I am getting around 5-6litres/100km. HOWEVER, i seemed to get further on the starfire per tank slightly. Then again it may simply be the car was lighter and I wasn't driving as fast in the starfire, as I generally tried to avoid the need for a new timing gear halfway from Melbourne to Sydney.

Ok power ? Well sorry I'm too poor to dyno it, and frankly given the poor servicing I am lately needing to give it (or rather the lack of), I doubt I am getting all the snap and pull from its prime years anymore. :(

But I can say this - I have on a number of occasions needed to tow quite heavy things.
Three of the heaviest was, I once dragged (sideways - against the tire; uphill, unfavorable gradient for the car being towed) out of a ditch/drain one of those old 1970's kingswood pig iron heavy as bastard wagons. Luckily i had enough weight to keep traction, and it pulled out like it wasn't even there.
I once towed a friends commodore, at one point thinking my car wouldnt be able to pull him across traffic fast enough, he panic'ed and put his brakes on hard. I dragged it about a metre before the rope actually snapped. I LOL'd he WTF'd.
I've had to tow my fathers hilux, twice, uphill along the highway, at the speed limit to a garage. Last time i did it, I overtook a rather large modern Nissan patrol pulling a tiny caravan. I LOL'd quite a lot. He WTF'd quite a lot - as did most of the traffic I passed when they realized I was pulling a lot more than them up the hill, and i wasn't slowing down.

So speed wise *meh* although you wont win a drag race, you could literally tie a rope to them and literally "drag" them along the road if you wanted. Be interesting to see how that might go with a reworked ratio in a 5 speed box.... hmmmm

...Ugh and i still got side tracked, problem i have is lack of people and funds to work in my corona, so any suggestions would be gratefully hoarded away until such a time as funds or desperation causes me to get it worked on.

Ie, body work, respray, dash retrim, seats retrim, engine work, chroming etc etc. Nice rims too maybe :P Although I am given to understand that both my wheel arches are conveniently quite wide from factory (as you recently noticed) and that celicas also came with 4 stud rims.. hello

Would love a way to transplant that ute's complete air con unit to the wagon too :/ im no engineer or air con specialist tho.

Also this is really important, and forgot to mention - the R series as I said parts are almost all interchangeable - this also means newer hardened/stainless california spec ones setup for unleaded fuel too. Your old school /LEADED/ engine can be safely converted to fully unleaded with the right valves and seats if you can find the parts!

Wow, gee.

Thanks for all of that useful information.

You probably knew half of it, but i figure from your updates you've not got as far as dropping the 18rg in there yet; so i figured share the Corona love and let you know what i found when my 18R slipped into mine. In some ways I am more impressed by you, taking that xt130 of yours as far as you have.

Pity you are in SA; or I might ask you how much i need to start saving up to give my corona the same treatment you gave yours already :) Still you may be able to give me some pointers too, in return :/

To the other guy... ye Corona's anonymous.. ha! it was the original cult classic sleeper. 4 door family looking thing, with the same monsters living under the hood as the Celica - and if not, one would bolt right in. In my case the original sports wagon IMO. Tho it generally pulled harder than the Celica, Celica's went faster. The XT130, looks wise was't as neo steam punk looking as the round headlight version, and the GT concept Corona; Also lacks the Aircraft cockpit vibe of the old roundys curvy hugs the driver dashboard. But the odd choice to use a holden engine along with crazy suspension (you can nail speed humps at 80km/h like they dont exist) payed off by making it a cult car as far as versatility to modding.

Plus the brakes, dont appear anything special, but in practice they stop the thing like hitting a brick wall when you need them. Probably designed with towing heavy shit in mind. Thus the family car vibe.

How many cars can you honestly say, you could bolt both toyotas greatest hits of the 70's and 80's under the hood with virtually nil modification; and at the same time would also do the same for a fair selection of holdens too. Both of which have performance upgrades available off the shelf as a simple bolt on in the form of side draft and/or dual carbs/manifolds/headers!

I am surprised not more of these made it into cult car circles.. but then i guess you had to be there so to speak. Perhaps back in the day if a few more Corona GT'z did a few laps at bathurst they might have had more of the Torana appeal.. ah well. Those days are lost. What with Oz now being considered the land of the driving undead given the unholy crusade against the imaginary hoons and speeders which if you listen to TV apparently kill more people than old age and wars. (while in practice apparently is the smallest cause of deaths but meh)

Oh top speed of a factory pre-emission 18r in an xt130 is about 180 in a 4 speed and about 200 (est) with a 5. Tired one like mine only goes about 160 tho. That is in wagon configuration tho. Assuming the 18RG is in good shape you should expect to at least get it up to 200 on the track from factory. If not check your timing and fuel system.

As for reality. I admit i am looking at my Corona through rose colored glasses. It was my first car over a decade ago. Hard to get over that first car! When you get older you want it to look and drive like you imagined it did when you first got it! Ha!

Let me preface most of this by saying I am very well versed in almost everything related to the xT13x series, all of its engine and gearbox combinations included. From the Starfire and B/W 504 through to the 18R-G with P51 combo. I've worked with and driven them all. Come to think of it I've owned almost all of them. I've carried out 1X (starfire) to 18R conversions amongst many others, varying from dead standard to well-warmed over motors. I've been there and back again. For better or for worse, I live and breathe these cars, or what's left of them at least.

All of that said, I do appreciate your enthusiasm for Coronas but you really need to take it down a notch with your post content.

Want my advice? Sit back for a bit. Do some reading. Lurk, accustom yourself to this forum environment, get a feel for this place. Being a lot more concise with your posting would be a fantastic start. Apart from mentioning that this is a good thread and that you have several Coronas yourself, there's really not much there apart from an unfiltered rambling stream Corona factoids and nostalgia. I'm not saying that I don't appreciate your sentiment, but it's more than a little bit too much all at once.

Also for corona owners I'll always recommend www.toymods.org.au as a good resource. Sit back and read for a long time before posting there though, it has a very different dynamic to this forum.

Anyway, the Corona is progressing. The diff is getting modded, the fuel line is getting bent up next week and i'm spraying the underbody on the weekend. All little things, but once they're all done i'm a lot closer to being ready to put the engine in for the first time.

Oh' i am well dialed down. Was the shock discovering I may not be the sole surviver of the Cult of Corona :P I've put down all my cards now anyway, so i got nothing left to give but respect now!
I've poked about on toymods before, nothing really jumped out and grabbed me by the throat like your story. Although I made a nice aquaintance with a guy who had a full scan of my 18R's manual.

How far you planning on taking the xt130? Chrome? Spoiler? Airbrushing? retrim? Aiming for classic restoration look, Mustang Style; or hot 4's pimped out,Sex spec style?
(Oh and out of curiosity - have you ever taken a look at the front of a mint XT130 with the bumper removed? Remind you of anything?)

Good luck mate!

What the fuck, I can't believe I posted that car in my own thread.

Big day today!

Picked up some stoneguard painty stuff to do my underbody. I had the car on the hoist last week to clean all the debris off in preparation for this. Big, smelly, messy job. I didn't want to get overspray / little flecks of airborne paint on my bodywork, so I made my own little Dexter style kill room / booth with dropsheets

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/2/4/3/505787.jpg

Several hours later I had done the majority of the underbody (firewall back). Finished in satin black, as the stoneguard is actually porous, so you have to give it a coat of paint to seal it. Exports finest.

This was all I was planning to do, however I found a small patch of surface rust on one of the chassis rails. Nothing the wire wheel couldn't fix, but it was in a shitty spot as I had to grind off some of my shiny white paint. I decided the best solution to this, instead of putting the car on a trailer, getting it touched up and then bringing it home was to simply stoneguard underneath my chassis rails and mask off a small (8mm) section on the side and stoneguard that too, so they're kind of two-tone chassis rails, but you can barely tell.

It could have worked out ALOT worse.

Personally I think it looks quite good.

Anyway, enough for today. Got the diff back yesterday also, hopefully I can put it in and not have to take it out again.

yeah that looks good, better than i was thinking. The final coat of paint must seal the deal (pardon the pun)

Looks nice, gives a good contrast there, plus if you were to put any chrome-work under there, i expect the black would really make it really stand out. Not to mention with that protection under there you wont be afraid to actually drive the car ;)

xZ10 Soarer wheels to clear regency / engineering. Then Superlight 15x8. Then save my life away and Hayashis.

UPDATES!

I'm making headway on my wiring harness, but I needed my ECU pinouts. All the published documentation was incorrect for my ECU, so I opened it up to get them off the PCB

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/2/4/3/506181.jpg

But, as some already know, I opened it up to find this:

Fuckin' Dunked.

Prognosis by electronics whiz brother is it'll be ok, looks like it wasn't switched on when it went under so it's just corrosion. No blown caps, no shorts, no burn marks. So long as the chips are fine, it'll live again.

After some cleaning:

I was also stuck waiting for Pirtek to finish my 8mm / 5/8" fuel line, so, chalk another one up for 'things I didn't have to do but did anyway because i'm waiting on stuff'
