Cheers for that guys.
Today went and got some used KYB shokers off Jay.
Also picked up some 6kg springs as he said the 8kgs I had wouldnt suit my needs, and cause im running 4kg rears.
So my 8kgs are for sale for $150, near new condition.

So to complete my front setup im after AE86 rotors and calipers.
I have put up an add in the wanted section.

ok so car is booked in tomorow to have an exhaust leek fixed
And also a small service to fix the rattly engine noise.
Probelly timing chain, valve clearences or sumtin.

Just a question what's involved with changing rear springs and shocks?
Do you have to drop the diff or what.
I'm not totally sure...

Sherlock
23rd December 2008, 10:20 PM
Jack rear up
Place on jack stands
Unbolt shocks and slide off mounts
Should be able to remove springs now
Place new springs in now
Jack diff up until it is easy to bolt shocks back up
You should be able to figure out the rest :P

Pretty easy

Dude I have a whole AE86 brake front brake set up sitting in the shed if you want it. Worked fine when it was on my car, but been sitting in my shed for 3 years or so. $50 and im in SA.

Also got 6kg rear springs, nice height, $100 if you change your mind. really 8/6kg front and rear are the way to go, I personally wouldnt go any softer.

8-6 is good for track and hills thrasher but for a daily 8-6kg to stiff 5kg rears perfect imo. But end of the day everyone wants diferent things from there car so yeah trial and error.

Tally
24th December 2008, 12:49 PM
exactly right. Its my daily so just want it to be in good working order.
And also have some fun in it, as I feel this setup will be a good balance.

Like yesterday had some spare time so went for a casual drive up through
Inglewood, Paracombe and Tea Tree Gully.
And it was no different, the car could really do with a nice simple setup.
Going through some low speed twistys it just feels unsafe.
It also understeers a bit, mainly when your decending.

So thats really all I want to acheive at the mo.
Its my first car and im learning how to drive it.
Ive reached the cars stock limit, and now I want to extend it and reach it again.

ok so got me some rotors and calipers.
rotors are fair bit rusty so looks like i may have to get them machined a mm or two.
anyone shed some light onto how much this is gonna cost me?
was thinking of getting em done by power brakes...

once thats done all i need are those things that go between the strut and ball joint.
forgot what they called...

and some new brake pads...

R&D Mechanical
25th December 2008, 10:18 PM
the first time you use your brakes the rust goes away, if its liped and what not get it machined

Tally
25th December 2008, 10:23 PM
yea i know but these have a bit more rustyness lol.

ok so today pulled out the 5speed and tail shaft out of the parts car.
Was a bitch and a halve doing it on my own with the car on ramps.
But eventually got there...
When it goes in ill be using a hoist so all good from now on heheh...

Any idea if I can get like some sort of rebuild kit for a K50?
or replacement rubbers or a shift rebuild kit...

All going well, gonna chuck everything in at the same time so car will be off the road for as little time as possible...

28th December 2008, 10:37 PM

honestly, he picks out 14mm spanners for me everytime hahaha :P

on a more serious note I pulled off the flywheel which I am gonna need for my manual conversion... I also need a spigot bearing...

Im thinking of lightening my flywheel while its out...
I have heard pros and cons about doing this but this website article gives some handy tips: http://www.racetep.com/flywheel.html

hehehe yea hes pretty good...
Picked up some brand new RDA brake rotors from Dave yesterday...
Seem alright, they are vented so I guess that must be a big + over my stock items I was initially gonna run...

All I need now is caliper bolts and the bottem arm thingos
and then put it all together and chuck it in!!!

Ok guys small update, the car is now officially running 100%

Jester Automotive installed a new timing kit to the 4K, new oil and adjusted the timing (10deg advance :P) and valve clearances...

Now the thing purrs like a dream... so quiet!!!
For anyone that remmebers how rattly it was they know what I mean...

Also got back some power that I was missing out on...

So yea, tommorow gonna track down some steering arms to finalize my suspension...

But not sure if the calipers I got are up to scratch, will have to get em checked out...
Dont want any brake problems what so ever!!!

Pics tomorw after a wash and detail... cool change ftw, its been too hot, gotta love that pool lol

Tally

ok so whats new? not much...

Cars been running sweet but been having a slight overheating problem.

So today I bought a sheet of .5 mm Aluminium to make some air shrouding for the radiator.
And I also bought a good quality thermo fan and Davis Craig thermo switch kit. Didnt come with relay wiring so gotta get that.
Not really happy with the Davis Craig thermo switch kit, it uses those crappy bulb thingos that go into the top radiator hose...

Qs: Should I mount thermo on the inside or outside of the radiator? and should I keep the stock fan...

Waiting to find some standard AE86 steering arms/knuckles (see WTB thread) and then susp can go in.

Then get clutch and spigot bearing later on...

arghhhh, cars...........

NathanKe70
21st January 2009, 10:26 PM
id personally just keep the stock fan but get it re-oiled.

Tally
21st January 2009, 10:41 PM
yea but why do all the new cars have thermo fans you know what I mean,
alright its to save space and all but alot of bigger cars have them too...
and they only operate when needed i.e when stuck in traffic or driving hard...
just better technology...

Think im going to mount it on the inside either with the stock shroud or made up out of a sheet of aluminium,
bolted to the radiator and sealed around the edges with a circle cut in it the diameter of the thermo fan and then the fan bolted to the aluminium sheet.

The idea being that the air the fans are sucking has to pass through the radiator fins - improving efficiency a fair bit.

I'm not sure how much of a negative impact this would have on natural air flow through the radiator from the car at speed though.

People fit thermofans sometimes, which is a good idea if done right. Less reciprocating mass the engine has to spin, which is the fan AND the resistance of the air it's trying to move, gives an effect similar to lightening the flywheel. A thermofan needs to be mounted on brackets which reach out to the side of the radiator, NOT bolts through the fins of the radiator with rubber washers. It also needs to have a shroud made up, which covers the whole face of the radiator and just has an opening where the circular frame of the fan blades is, or the fan basically just sucks around the circle and you don't use half of your radiator area.

quick update: some f* head smashed my drivers door with a hammer last night.

If I catch him.........

not happy...

in other news, manual convo yet to be performed, pending clutch and spigot bearing
suspension convo yet to be performed, pending standard steering arms...
thermo convo yet to be performed, pending 2mm Aluminium sheet

in other words, pending cash lol

Ok so just picked up some brand new short stroke KYB Excel-G shocks for the rear...

Now manual conversion and suspension is drawing near and im in the market for a new clutch and spigot bearing.
Anyone recommend anywhere?

Few Questions
Can I use my KE70 brake lines for my AE86 Calipers?
Torque settings for putting my struts together eg rotor to hub etc etc???

Also where can I get my flywheel machined?
I left it outside by accident and it rained and so it went rusty...

Dave

Ive been having dreams of me selling this and buying an old-schooler jap car 60s 70s Mazda or Toyota...

I guess its becasue I had had it with the auto and the shocks botteming out with the cut springs which makes the car so bad to drive...

But its all getting fixed as I have everything for it brand new... but its just time to put it all in that is the problem...

have found a KE70 panel van, a mint KE25, a 5K KE70 or a mint manual AE71?

rear suspension is in (4kg/KYB excel G shocks) feels great!

Loving the manual conversion...

Front susp getting put in on wednesday...

Should be sweet... couldnt wait to take it through the hills... goes killa... although only problem is the 4K up hills arghhhhhhh...

it goes good between 3 - 5 thou rpm though... really gets up and goes...

On first thought I was gonna chuck on my twin carbies casue the stocko one is crapolla but I might save them for the KE25 and just get a weber or sumtin...

what you guys recommend... has to be relatively economical... yet were talking 4K so doesnt matter lol...

Big thanks to Nat at Tyrepower North East Rd!!!

now running 6kg up front, KYB shocks, new rotors and pads...

time for a cruise guys next few weeks. maybe another bbq like Dave did...

Reason im happy is my goals have been met with this car,
and i can stop spending money on it as its a daily... dont want it too extreme...
