Hey guys just bought my first ae86 it has a twin carb 18rgeu in it with no power steering it doesnt turn to bad but im wanting to get into drifting this year and a little bit worried about how turn speed on the wheel is going to affect me. how many of you guys drift with no power steering?

You don't need it.

once you are actually spinning in the rear the steering feels alot looser and smoother than you would expect...almost floating like sometimes..the tryes are wanting to pull straight and the wheel will follow unless told otherwise.

Although if you are doing the huge weight transfers than it wont be as smooth..

Just go for a slide and you will know what i mean..

manual steering in a light car is just fine... and the only situation in which you get really heavy steering is in a power steering rack which has no fluid in it or snapped a PS belt... becomes MUCH heavier then a comparable set up with a manual rack.

I palm steer my ae71 with 15x7's and ps arms all day everyday. Only time i can't is going lock to lock when stationary or going really slow on a hill. Oddly enough i drove dads new commodore with power steering for a few days and got sore arms cos i found the steering to heavy hahaha

Also depends on the size of your steering wheel. I've got a fairly small wheel. But when im actually skidding, dont really notice it.

manual steering is fine.. the steering feedback on a manual 86 is awesome, people in the US convert their cars to manual steer from P/S.

Running P/S arms, more track and alot of castor makes the steering noticeably heavier, but still perfectly drivable even in carparks etc

k looks like i'll stick to the manual setup

I've driven cars with p/s all my life.
Since I recently bought my '86 I've decided to get it. But only because I'm used to it.

i drove around in a ford fairmont, that had an issue with spitting off power steering belts, it was so fricken hard to turn its not funny, but i got used to it and now every car seems easy.

no need for power steering.....our cars arnt heavy enough to need it and most of us are running 14/15 inch rims so the turn speed isnt that bad......
just make sure nothing is loose and your steering rack has no play.....
you can always have it installed at a good mechanic for around 220 + labour

The power steering in 86s is shit. The way it gives you assistance makes the steering seem really vague when you're sideways. I've got ps in my Trueno. Brought home a manual rack from Japan so if you wanna go ps then use my stuff when I've done the conversion. Rack, pump, reservoir, steering column lock stock the lot.

Steering is nice and light when you're drifting, i can imagine how painful something such as an s13 would be without ps, however ae86's and alike are fine without it

my last skid bus (r32) had HICAS issues, which eventualy led to me losing powersteering after 80kmph...was the most convienient shit eva!!

ae86
18th February 2009, 02:20 PM
realisticly ae86 is so light PS would only help during parking, when moving the steering ability of non powersteering just gives u more feel of the road which is what alot of people love, just the slow speeds (under 10kmh) is what screws u around a little but u get used to it quick

ok what about this:
im putting sr20 in my ke70. its gonna be using full s13 front eg. crossmember, control arms, steering rack ect. Should i bother connecting all the power steering stuff up? would it be really heavy if i dont?

After driving my nissan patrol with a tiny steering wheel and big tires and a blown power steer hose in the bush, a corolla with no ps is a piece of piss!!! (literally had to stop every half hour to rest my arms)

most cars I've driven hard with power steering unless set up perfectly dont give anywhere near as much feedback as a non-p/s car too.

For arguments sake, I'd imagine having PS for drifting in an AE86 would help a bit during midslide for corrections and such...

I would have liked to do this setup. Simon has done it in his KE. The only real time i found i need p/s for the sr20 was when It was stationary, tight turning, even then it wasn't that bad, but heavier than normal.

Just run a touch less castor :)

In my s14 it does make it alot easier to rip the wheels back to straight mid skid for corrections, easy to palm while you hold up the handbrake too.

I've got a complete AE86 power steering system in my AE71, rebuilt rack and all....

Standard power steering in an 86 isn't like what people might think, its a light car, so as such it doesn't really assist that much so the rack doesn't too THAT much. I honestly didn't notice a difference non-power steering to power steering in the 71 once you're moving, doesn't feel much if any lighter or less responsive. I only notice it when you are turning on the spot, parking etc.

Mind you, I have never drifted the car, and never will (its too clean to risk damaging, and I've got an AE86 to drift anyway).

But what I'd finally say, if I were to build my AE71 again, I wouldn't bother with power steering, it cost me more than what it was really worth.

running less castor means more work required from driver during sideways action. less work in parking lot :P

The difference between 3-4degrees and 8-9 degrees wont be massive.

You should be tracing the wheel anyway, not letting it spin thru your hands :)

Watch any incar of current winners

Its not a clear cut line of no you dont or yes you do, you trace with one hand while getting the other ready for the grab.

Not so much 'doing it wrong', some just don't stand out as excellent as others. Plus, some corners just don't demand the need for tracing, but you can ALWAYS do it.
