yeah, working on that bit :P

also marv, you were asking how much lower i could go with my current coilover setup i think. that second to last pic shows how much adjustment for going lower there is. i think there's about 3" there, so with some 185/60r14 and dropping it as far as it goes, i could probably have the crossmember scraping :P

yeah, drum rears standard, but i mashed up one of the swingarms slightly with a meeting with the gutter in the wet. found an MX73 at the local wrecker, so i salvaged the swingarms and brakes from that. turns out they're pretty much a bolt in swap.

anywho, once i get some wheels (maybe across the christmas hollies if i can find some cash) i'll lower the front end and cut a coil out of the back maybe and get some pics with fitment and camber :P

bit of an update

got bored couple of weeks ago and decided to lower the front a bit and take out the rear springs. pics do the talking.

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/3/6/8/5/33774.jpg

then, from yesterday:
just been under the car in the humidity and heat putting the stock shocks back in (from xE7x Excel-G), cause they keep hitting full droop when i go over bumps/speedbumps as they're not quite long enough. i'm thinking i might see if i can get some threaded spacers made up to thread onto the top of the shaft and give me an extra ~2" of overall length.

also pulled off the rear mudflaps finally and found a nice hole in the bottom of the drivers side guard. there's rust bubbles on the passenger side as well, but they haven't rusted through yet thankfully. will look into getting some rust converter on those areas in the near future.

...shortly afterwards i realised i hadn't tightened the wheel nuts up on the rear and almost lost a wheel driving down the street.

went for a walk this morning though and recovered the three nuts that went walkabout and put everything back together. all sweet!

Thread revival time.

So, not a lot has happened with this in the past 6 months or so, but since I'm back in work now, I can start affording all the bits and pieces I couldn't previously.

Here's something that did occur in the past 6 months though.
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/3/6/8/5/55048.jpg

In more recent news, I bought some wheels. Some may recognise them from the auction, but for those who don't trawl Yahoo Auctions, a picture is conveniently located below. They'll be shipped over from Japan sometime in December, so I won't see them in the flesh until sometime January if everything goes to plan. I'm also planning to get them wrapped in some decent rubber (for cheaper than locally) before they get packed into the container so all I'll have to do when I get them is bolt them straight on.
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/3/6/8/5/55049.jpg

I also picked up some strut top rings off roadsailing to make my own strut brace in the coming months.
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/3/6/8/5/55050.jpg

That's about all that's worth mentioning for the time being.

ill-minded
16th October 2010, 02:39 AM
The auction didn't specify the exact sizes, but they're either:

1. 14x8J -10 and 14x8.5J -5
2. 14x8.5J -10 and 14x9J -5

With the offsets being approximate but probably -12 and -6 in keeping with the half/quarter inch measurements. I'm working off the assumption that they're going to be the smaller widths, but I may yet be pleasantly surprised if they're the wider measurements.

No real update, but I thought I might add that I got some rubber on the wheels before they went into the container. Full set of Bridgestone RE-11 in 185/60R14 for pretty darned cheap. Also bought some Work lock nuts for a bit of wank factor. Also picked up some RCAs from AJPS and found that they foul with the current wheels (steering arm hits the balance weights on the inner edge) so I'll re-install them when the new wheels arrive.

I got a wheel alignment yesterday and found I had about twice as much castor on the passenger side. I know there's meant to be a little bit more on one side to counteract the camber in the road, but I think that much is probably a bit excessive, haha. Everything else was within a fairly small margin of error, but we got it all straightened out, so all is good.

Pulled off the valve cover last week and found that both of my timing chain guides are broken, haha. I knew beforehand that they weren't in particularly good shape, but they're worse than I'd initially suspected. It still runs fine and doesn't make too much noise, so there's enough tension in the chain still and the lower half of the driver's side guide is intact enough to stop the chain raping the timing cover. It'll do for now, but a rebuild is on the cards a little sooner than I anticipated.

Getting some work done on refurbishing the daily spec wheels for this though, so while the wheel fitment won't be as cool as these, it'll be cool in a different way. Pics in due time.

Everyone says that, haha. It's a future job to return it to black. The car had a respray and the guy who did it decided to paint the grill grey instead of black for some stupid reason.

Rebuild will be pretty simple. Factory spec bottom end rebuild, new timing chain kit with steel backed guides, a little bit of porting in the head and port matching the intake, new valves, valve springs and a beefier cam. I'll also ditch the EGR and air re circulation crap while it's out.

Thanks, Pecky. :)

I'll be looking at about $700 in parts, but that is also partly because I need a new timing case, cause the coolant neck on the passenger side has holes in it and doesn't seal all too well. That won't be including things like new pistons/rings and bearings though. I'll judge how they are when I tear it down and see whether it's worth rebuilding the bottom end entirely. Seems like a bit of money to be spending on a 22R, but for the time being, I'd prefer to just have it running reliable. Worst case is that I sell it to some Hilux guys and get most of it back, haha.

Did a bit of reading and after some discussion with a mate, we decided that the factory intake ports are shithouse, so I'm gonna spend a bit more time on the head than initially anticipated. The result should open up the top end above 4,500RPM and notably more power.

I guess this means it won't really be a fair comparison with a standard motor with a cam upgrade anymore though. This handy link (http://www.lcengineering.com/LCTechPages/techpages/eng121.html) shows how much the standard late 22R heads choke up at about 130CFM. I'm hoping to end up with something that compares similarly to the "Stage 3" head.

LittleRedSpirit
24th June 2013, 09:31 PM
WHat ecu are you using? Youre going to find the EFI pretty limited I think. Hopefully the stock afm will judge it close enough.

ill-minded
24th June 2013, 09:40 PM
Standard initially, but Megasquirt later. I think the standard AFM should handle it for the time being, but it'll obviously choke the motor a bit, which I'm okay with to start out. I'll see how it goes and hopefully it doesn't lean out in the top end.

ill-minded
25th June 2013, 02:12 PM

How fun is taking the inlet manifold off? haha. You can take the head off with that bottom half still on by the way, just a couple things underneath to disconnect.
Also, more details on that diff? What housing does it go in?

ill-minded
29th July 2013, 11:08 PM
Not particularly pleasant, but I haven't really run into too many snags up to that point yet. There are two bolts under the first two intake runners that are going to be impossible to undo with some of the crazy vacuum contraptions buried underneath. I think I'm going to be leaving most of them out when I put it all back together, once I work out what can be safely deleted. The EGR and air re-circulation systems are going in the bin for sure though. Already have the block-off plates for those, haha.

Diff is a TRD jobbie. 41301-RA010 is the part number. It's a 2-way mechanical unit for F series diffs. It also suits GXE10/SXE10. The only other requirement are slightly different side bearings for them, which appear to be a common bearing within a few different locally delivered Toyotas. I ordered mine through Streeter when the exchange rate was at about 103 yen to the dollar. I think I paid about $750 landed via sea post.

Seventy
29th July 2013, 11:27 PM
So just need the different side bearings and it will go into a standard open diff housing with the standard c&p?
Oh and I meant i left the second half of the intake manifold completely bolted to the head and disconnected everything underneath, then took the head off with it attached

ill-minded
29th July 2013, 11:40 PM
I think there is something about needing to turn/cut a little bit off the ends of the output shafts, but I haven't gotten quite that far and I don't expect to be installing mine until after the motor is rebuilt and back in.

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/3/6/8/5/510647.jpg

I'd prefer to pull the motor as a long block, mainly to contain any oil in it so if I can't get the lower half off, I'll probably just leave it on and take it off after the engine is out. :)

Seventy
30th July 2013, 12:35 AM
Oh yeah forgot you were taking the whole engine out :s
I wouldnt mind trying what Ive heard about using a stock ma61 lsd with extra plates in it

ill-minded
30th July 2013, 12:47 AM
I tossed up whether I should just get a re-shimmed MA61 diff, but by the time I find and buy one, buy and fit the rebuild kit and get it installed with new bearings and seals, I'm not far off getting a brand new TRD centre. I think the TRD centres also have 4 pinion gears as opposed to 2 in the MA61 ones, so it should be less prone to exploding if I ever do wind up with something that makes big power.

LittleRedSpirit
30th July 2013, 08:28 AM
Yes that will be a nice diff, and judging by that photo the non lsd axles will need cutting, unless you can adapt the lexus stubs somehow. I was looking at getting a type 2 torsen for mine one day from an sxe10 altezza. I was able to get a nice one for my sprinter diff for a good price, but I still ended up spending about 1200 bucks on it all by the time it was done. I dont believe they lock on decel as hard as a two way.

ill-minded
30th July 2013, 06:14 PM
Half the reason I went mechanical is so it'll lock even with one wheel in the air so I can actually get in and out of awkward driveways.

In other news, I've got the entire intake side of the motor stripped now. Head looks to be in pretty good condition with no visible corrosion, so should be good. The timing chain and guides are well and truly shagged though, as previously pictured. I even got all the exhaust manifold nuts off without any of them snapping. Hurrah! Main things left now are to disconnect and remove the P/S pump, pull the exhaust manifold and then just split it from the gearbox and undo the engine mounts.

Got a bunch of brackets, pipes and bolts gold zinc plated and dummied it up for shits and giggles. The block will be getting a slight overbore, since there was a bit of scoring on the wall of #2 cylinder. Motor will go in for machine work early next week. I spent some time a couple of weeks ago cleaning up the casting in the intake ports with a die grinder as well, so things are on track to get this all sorted and back together soon.

I've also been in contact with Superpro about getting some rack bushes made to suit RA65/RT142 power steering racks. They're based on the MA61 rack bushes that AJPS organised a while back, but with a smaller inner diameter on the passenger side bush.

The plating was done through Ace Gate Hardware on the other side of town. They've got a reasonably large plating setup, so they take on external work as well as their own stuff. It's not the cheapest option when you've got a whole bunch of brackets and stuff as well, but it's all about that OEM finish. If I find some pieces to stand out too much for my liking, I'll just run over them with a tin of satin black. When I get as far as getting body work done on the car in future, I'll get the rest of the bolts and brackets in the bay plated as well to match.

This is true. It's hard to replicate the cadmium plating though, as it's largely been replaced with the gold passivation for environmental reasons as far as I'm aware. I guess if I were going true OEM style, all the brackets would actually be painted black anyway.

Either way, it should still look pretty cool. :)

Okay, so the engine parts went into the machine shop a few weeks back. Got the bores and crank journals measured so I could order the pistons and bearings in. Went with a 0.5mm overbore on the cylinders and all the crank journals came in within standard spec, so a full set of standard bearings as well. I should get it back on Monday or Tuesday next week, so I'll get started on the assembly when I get it all back home.

Not too much else going on other than replacing the low pressure power steering hoses and getting some stuff together for assembling the motor. Still waiting on those rack bushes, but the guy I'm dealing with is away on leave until the 30th, so I won't find out about those until next week.

Matsuri appearance is out. Got the motor back this morning, so I don't think I'll have enough time to get the engine back together and back in the car. I guess it's possible, but I'd rather take my time and know that I've done it right than rush it and bugger something up and waste more money and the last 5 months. I also won't get my rack bushes until the 15th, so I can't even put the motor in until after then.

I started to get some stuff sorted today though. Pressure washed the valve cover and intake manifold to clear out all the residue from bead blasting and prep for painting. I trimmed all the casting dags off around the lip of the valve cover as well, so it doesn't look all jaggy under the paint. I haven't gotten as far as getting paint on the manifold, but I did get the valve cover sorted at least.

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/3/6/8/5/514799.jpg

Bam! It'll get the usual treatment with the lettering sanded back to bare alloy.

I did a little bit of work on the head as well. It came partially assembled from the shop, so all the valves, springs and retainers were already installed. I dropped my new cam in and spent half an hour re-assembling the rocker towers, shafts and arms, which pretty much completes the head, other than bolting a couple of block off plates on later.

I'll start cleaning up the block tomorrow to get it ready for paint. Then the assembly can commence. Only thing I've got to do is file the top rings a little, as the pistons I'm using recommend a slightly larger end gap than factory specs.

ill-minded
5th October 2013, 02:42 AM
I got the block cleaned up and painted today, so I can probably drop the crank in tomorrow and gap the rings. I've run into a snag with the piston pin clips, as they use the spiral type ones, which I discovered earlier today are a real c**t to install. I'll probably end up seeing if the guy at the shop can do it for me, cause I don't want to fuck the pistons trying to do it myself. I can't use the old wire type either, as they're a bit wider and foul on the pin itself, so they don't quite sit in the groove properly. Bugger.

Other than that, smooth sailing thus far.

Got the rack bushes off Superpro and installed them, then proceeded to finish up all the little bits and pieces yesterday. I got it to fire and run for ~15 seconds before noticing that it was leaking water from the radiator drain bung. I also needed to adjust the TPS as it was just rough as guts without holding the throttle cracked. I got it to warm up today, but it started leaking water out of the coolant bypass pipe that bolts to the rear facing side of the timing case just underneath the front of the intake manifold. So far there hasn't been any oil leaks though, so that's a bonus. Probably one of the few 22Rs that doesn't leak like a sieve, haha.

In case anyone is wondering, the factory injection seems to run fine without any of the EGR, air injection system or the cold idle valve connected, so good news to anyone else who has all the old hoses and piping crumbling away. It also frees up a hell of a lot of space around the oil filter.

ill-minded
21st November 2013, 03:17 PM
All fixed.

The only niggly issue at the moment just feels like a slightly sticky throttle, as it jerks the car when coming from coasting then accelerating.

Other than that, I took it for a short drive and everything seems to be in order now. It'll actually rev out to 5,500RPM now, which is something it always struggled to do previously, but as I expected, it's still no powerhouse. A new exhaust would probably help a little, but I'd rather just enjoy driving it for a while.

The alternator issue turned out to be either a dead regulator or diode pack, so I swapped those bits from my housemate's flogged out 5E-FE one and it came alive again. The leak from the back of the motor just turned out to be a leak from the rear half-moon seal, which was easily rectified and I replaced the selector rod bushing in the gearbox while I had it out to check the rear main seal.

Re-bled the brakes with some fresh DOT 3 fluid to wash out a decade of muck and filth in the system as well, so everything feels nice and fresh again. Well, mostly.

TL:DR: It runs and I am happy.

I did some work on fixing and upgrading the audio setup in this. I originally had an older Clarion head unit powering some 4" JVC speakers in the original dashboard mounts and 6" Clarion speakers mounted in the rear passenger side trims. The Clarion speakers gave out since the foam cone mount things disintegrated, so I replaced them with a cheap pair of Kenwood 6", mainly just to fill the open cavity in the trim. I scored a secondhand Alpine 12" Type S sub in a ported box for peanuts from Jake and mated that with a 2-channel Fusion amp I had lying around in the Mira. Nothing fancy or even remotely audiophile by any means, but it's a bit of an upgrade and it's nice to have a bit of low range now.

Belted out some eurobeat to test it out for laughs. :D

Just looking at your engine there, it appears your dizzy is the auto type with the two vacuum connections. One controls advance, one retards. If you plug the retard line and disconnect it will improve throttle response. Worked great on my auto. Should do a similar thing for you. Hey got a question for you.

Do you happen to know the wire colours for the stereo and aerial controls? Im putting a head unit in mine, was going to run my own full time 12v of course, as well as my own fresh speaker wires, I just need to find the stock accessory wire and the antenna wires really. The rest is pretty easy. I read somewhere that there are 2 wires for the entenna, one up one down and they get wired together on the same wire from the stereo as it controls both phases. Is this correct to your knowledge?

ill-minded
25th December 2013, 07:55 PM
I've got a wiring diagram in my Hayne's manual, but I'm currently in Osaka, sorry. I did the head unit install almost 10 years ago now, but there was something like that. There's a antenna control module located in the boot on the passenger side behind the interior panelling and the body, but I don't recall what type of signal it used from the head unit to control the antenna. It may be a simple trigger wire though.

I also discovered that the front main seal weeps a little. I think it's due to a groove on the crank pulley, so I'll take it out when I get a chance and see if I can press the seal in further so it doesn't ride in the old groove.

The reason I haven't gone any lower yet is because it's largely a daily at the moment and I can't really afford to get pinned by the cops, so it makes more sense to me to just avoid giving them a reason to pull me up in the first place. The other reason is that I'm waiting until I do all the rear suspension work (bushes, springs, dampers, install the LSD I've got, uni joints and centre bearing) so it still drives nicely.

Thanks again, guys. :)

I finally got off my arse and fixed the front main pissing oil everywhere. Turns out the tension spring that helps the seal compress around the crank pulley failed and combined with the light groove in the pulley, let oil basically plaster everything in the engine bay. Both the seal and the pulley have now been replaced, so it's now leak-free again. Pity about the entire lower half of the motor now being caked in oil/dirt sludge, but small steps.

I did also spend some time recently fixing a bunch of exhaust leaks, as it turns out two of the three manifold-exhaust studs and nuts had gone AWOL, so they've been replaced again. The two extra bolts in the middle of the air re-circulation block off plates on the top of the exhaust manifold were misplaced during the engine rebuild, and I thought I could get away without them, but there'd been a little bit of exhaust gas weeping from the holes, so I pilfered some old flywheel bolts from the Handi to fill the blanks as they turned out to be the right thread.

I also washed the poor thing and put the mesh back on it.

Put a deposit on a BEAMS over the Christmas break (worst timing ever) and paid the rest off recently, so will hopefully pick that up tomorrow.

Not much else going on at present as I'm still waiting on some of the remaining drivetrain/suspension parts and finances are still a bit tight after the holiday season. Currently in the process of fixing a coolant leak though.

Thanks, man. :) Aside from the usual Toyota rust issues, they're a good, solid little car with potential. Often overlooked as being ugly as hell. I remember back when I first wanted to start modifying it back in the early 00's, the general consensus was that they were the ugliest Celica to exist, second only to the RA40 liftbacks, haha.

Received the first batch of parts for this Beams. Just basic stuff for now. New exhaust manifold bolts, studs and nuts, replacing the vent tube/oil drain pipe that bolts into the exhaust side of the block towards the rear and the hose that attaches to it. Also picked up a new thermostat and gasket as well as a thermostat for the Cresta. Next on the list is a bunch more service stuff from Sam at SQ and then a TODA flywheel and clutch setup. Those will sting a bit, so the next update could be a while off!

Yeah, definitely a must in my case as the motor came sans flywheel/clutch. Even if it had one, I would have swapped it over anyway. :)

Picking up some Recaros for this next week as well.

Flywheel and clutch setup sorted!

I've also been accumulating some of the actual conversion parts. I've got a hold of an SA63 crossmember and a YNxx bellhousing. I've found a guy with some 2S engine mounts as well, so hopefully I can grab those soon as well.

More part collecting and even a little bit of actual work!

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/3/6/8/5/544624.jpg

I picked up these rear swingarms off a mate a little while back with the intention of swapping some of the parts I've got sitting here so I don't have to fuss about with it later down the track. I've currently installed new wheel studs, handbrake shoes and discs and spent a little time straightening out the edges of the backing plate a bit, since they always get crushed when people lay them down on the ground. Cleaned them up a little, but I'll probably do a more thorough job later and give them a quick lick of paint. I've got new brake pads to use with the calipers that are currently on the car as well as braided brake lines and bushes that I'll install at a later date.

In other news, I've spent a bit of time faffing about with SolidWORKS knocking up random parts in 1:1 scale and 1:24 scale. One of the little projects I gave myself was to go about designing some garnish covers for the BEAMS valve cover with a bit more of a retro theme, since the valve cover underneath the factory plastic garnish is pretty boring in the aesthetic department. I'll still be using the factory garnish for the foreseeable future, but I'd like to play around with different covers later down the track to mix things up a bit. The plan is to eventually 3D print a set to prototype and fix clearance issues, then eventually look at getting some machined from aluminium, possibly in a small batch to spread the production costs out.

I really like seeing what people are doing with new small-batch production getting a bit more available and viable. It's great getting creative.

What's your background in? I've printed a few bits and pieces for my car as well. I'm in Industrial design (and funnily enough, just finished my first term of tutoring 1st year Solidworks, haha!)

Printing is awesome for prototyping. SamQ has been using it as well prior to machining. Been quietly following this build for a while and keen to see where it keeps heading.

I half-studied (didn't complete) mechanical engineering back in '06, but currently work in customer service and as a scientific research assistant. I first started with Solid Edge, but migrated to SolidWorks as it seemed to have more use in industry. I wouldn't class myself as being super proficient in using it, but I can do enough to get by. :)

The current little project is reproducing some old style Volk Mesh centre caps. I've got a full set of genuine ones here, but I'm afraid of losing one (or more) since the clips that hold them in are breaking and they're getting ever more fragile with age, so I figured I'd 3D print some reproductions that I can use day-to-day and if I lose one or they get stolen then there's no real biggy, cause I can just print more. Once I get around to getting some prototypes printed for checks on quality and fitment, I might look at selling them to anyone who is interested.

Oh yeah, I'm also using Solidworks to get a bunch of random shit laser cut. Mostly things like wheel spacers, but also getting endplates cut for a bespoke muffler and an adaptor plate to mount a Recaro to my Ikea office chair base.

Got another package from SQ Engineering. Down-pull throttle cable pulley kit, Pipercross filter adapter, engine to gearbox sealing plate and a set of injector seals, since the old lower seats were toast.

So the intake side now looks like this. Yet to buy the filter element (EBay later on) and I'll probably paint the backing plate black to tone it down a bit.
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/3/6/8/5/558151.jpg

Bit hard to see the pulley sandwiched between the throttle bodies, but the kit relocates the throttle cable to act directly on the #2 throttle shaft. The factory setup has the pulley mounted on the top of the throttle assembly and actuates via a linkage, as well as requiring the throttle cable to make a big loop to come back around from the front of the car, which looks a bit unsightly and would mean I'd have to find some other cable long enough to fit.
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/3/6/8/5/558152.jpg

This shows the angle at which the throttle cable now points in towards the throttles.

I bought this plate(s) to use as a template so I can get the YN bellhousing I bought modified to utilise all of the mounting points on the BEAMS. The S->W bellhousings on ST141 and SA63 Celicas have the starter motor and clutch slave mounted on the exhaust side, which blows, since I want to keep both of those things away from the headers, so while all this guff about modifying the YN bellhousing is a pain in the arse, it'll pay itself off later when everything just fits like it should. Six of the holes (inc. both of the engine to gearbox dowels) line up perfectly fine, so I'll drop this all down to get modified in coming weeks.

I've got an Amayama order currently in progress as well, which just includes more little niggly service items and bits and pieces. Next on cards is the Pipercross filter element and then I'll be looking at ECU purchase.

Engine is in for test fits. The only two clearance issues are the clutch master cylinder interfering with the stacks and the filter element and the rear coolant/oil drain housing on the back of the head with the inlet and outlet to the heater core. I do know that the steering rack will also interfere with the rear section of the sump, which is just reinforcing in the casting, so no big deal there.

All things considered, I'm pretty happy with everything else!

Small progress update.

I got all the info I need for now from the test fitting and it has since come back out. Spent a few days replacing the LCA bushes, and rebuilding the front hubs with new discs, studs, bearings and seals. Gave them a fresh lick of paint to pretty them up a little and to try and dissuade the surface rust a bit.

I took the crossmember and castor rod brackets down to get blasted and powdercoated last Friday morning, so I should get them back sometime this week and begin reassembling the front suspension side of things.

Ordered the slimline rear housing via SQ Engineering and also put an order through Jesse for a Tomei fuel pressure gauge to match the FPR (also some Tomei $w@gg) and a spare valve cover (the metal one, not the plastic garnish) to faff about with.

Cleaned up the steering rack and replaced the rack ends and boots. Both of the old rack ends were different, so one has been replaced at some point, but they didn't bother doing the other. The one that hadn't been changed was looking a little worse for wear as a result. Either way, they've both been replaced, so another point for slop in the suspension/steering fixed.

Popped the front calipers off and tore them down. I'd had a feeling that the passenger side one was a bit seized for a while now and that turned out to be true. Not completely stuck, but it took 90psi in the compressor to blow the piston out, whereas the driver side came out pretty easily. The bodies look to be fine, but the pistons look like they're a bit on the fence, so I'll be replacing both of them regardless.

The slimline rear housing came with a straight barb for the heater pipe, which oddly enough aims it straight at the other one on the hard line just below it. Picked up a 90° elbow to replace it and solved that issue.
