Ok, so i hope i can post this here since its not an AE or KE but it does have toyota flavour. A few guys have been asking about it recently so thought id post up a build thread. Also theres a few little things i want to get done in the coming months that im not sure about so would be good to have some other people's opinions. JZX forums are dead and cost money!

I bought the car originally back in late 2007 off Jay from buddyparts as a LX80 which was 2.4 litre turbo diesel, i still thought it was cool back then cos i could go up hills in 4th gear at 40km/h with the A/C on no sweat hahah. So anyway, couple years later and alot of ATM recipts later its become this...

Engine/Performance

-1JZ-GTE Conversion
-R154 gearbox
-OS Giken twin plate clutch
-Microtech LT12s ECU
-R33 GTR Intercooler
-3 Inch Stainless Exhaust (still stock dump/front pipe)
-Bosch 040 fuel pump
-Odyssey dry cell battery
-Car was tuned by mark at Madaz earlier this year and made 206rwkw on 12psi

Suspension/Brakes/Chassis

Front

-JZA80 factory wheels 17X8
-Bridgestone Adrenalins (225/45/17)
-JIC silver coilovers (unsure of spring rate)
-Brakes - R33 GTR callipers and BA falcon DBA slotted and vented rotors with ProjectMu pads

Rear

-JZA80 factory wheels 17X9.5
-JIC coilovers (unsure of spring rate)
-Bridgestone Adrenalins (235/45/17)
-Rear IRS conversion (was solid axle rear end with drums)
-Stock JZX81 disc brakes
-Locked cressy centre

Inside

-JZX81 Dash with digital cluster/speedo thing
-Kenwood double DIN CD player
-Some sort of aftermarket rear speakers.
-Microtech dash display unit
-Recaro SR2 Seats
-Velo 4 Point harness on drivers’ side
-Removed all sound deadening, rattle can sprayed floor
-Supermade floor mats
-Broadview mirror
-Yoshi toy hangs from windscreen, its my g metre. (ive had this creature in every car i've owned..)

Recently my aim has been to make the car look stock and attract as little attention as possible to save getting defected and make it a more suitable daily driver. Here are pictures of it with BBS mesh 17X9 +20....these would have looked really cool if i had been prepared to do the necessasry guard work to make them fit properly.

I will post up new pics with the supra wheels tomorrow. I've also got it booked into AAA exhausts to get a muffler put in and just a normal/simple exhaust tip. Although i think those big twin tips are cool they dont really work unless you have big wheels and a kit, and theyre pretty damn loud too.

I've also gotta thank jay at buddyparts since he and nick pretty much built the car and supplied most of the gear for it, car has been faultless reliability wise since the conversion and now that its pretty much sorted im really loving driving it.

Really needs like 14" meshies.. Would be hot.. And twin pea shooters :)

How hard was the IRS conversion? Did you do it yourself?

James86

as cool as that may be, they wouldnt fit over my brakes.....and would be really shit to drive on:P

BuddyParts did the IRS conversion. I couldn't really say how hard it was but i know it took alot of time and fucking around, changing mounts etc. Was well worth it though, has made a massive difference.

dec 5th, most people will be at stereosonic that day but if not come watch me do a burnout asnd have a go at dash for cash and crap, just doing it for fun so hopefully turns out to be a good day and i dont get beaten up by holden fans.

also i want to get my fuel guage working on the digital dash so if anyone knows where i can find a JZX81 body loom diagram from thatd be swell, then nick can have a go at it. I've searched for ages with no luck.

So....went for a drive last night when i got sick of studying at home. Been trying to get it ready for MallaNats and the BuddyParts private day early Dec. Pretty happy with how its going at the moment, new exhaust gets done tomorrow.....next thing to go is the locker, so over it.

Also discovered my handbrake actually locks sweet in the rain last night :)
so watch out for me in DA next year. :hehe:

AAA Wins again

you should have seen the customers in there today. Dude with an old school maserati getting an exhaust done that was sooo precious about everything on his car. Even had his old man down there in his new maseratti flossing his snake skin shoes and suit trousers. I've never seen anyone be quite so pedantic about the underside of there exhaust parts......and i've been to Adelaide Autosalon 07!

but yeah, cant fault AAA. I'd reccomend them to anyone. I'll go back one day and get dump pipes/front pipe made.

Marvis - Hopefully ill have action pics soon.

So yesterday i did MallaNats. Didn't wanna thrash the car too much cos i was trying to save tyres for the buddyparts private day on wednesday. Was good day though even though i got knocked out of every event i entered 1st round:P

dash4cash was a drag race on the straight before turn 7. i lost by about a car length to some crazy commadore with his air filter through the bonnet. I missed 2nd gear aswell which didn't help:hehe:

go to whoa i also lost first shot to a really shitty looking ford that was actually crazy quick haha. we both overshot the stop line but he grabbed reverse quicker.

still heaps of fun and was good to take a passenger on "cruise the track" that was actually pretty loose on the far side of the track where there was no marshalls to tell me off.

Luke Broadbent won extreme entry....so entertaining. Macked the tyres good and proper too on the very last attempt. He earned every cent of the $500 prize money. ha

So todays BuddyParts private mallala day was best fun i've had in a long time. I originally thought my coilovers were too stiff......which they are for the street but out on the track today they were great, held so flat and just felt good doing both timed laps and drift (attempts). My best timed lap was 1.27 which im pretty happy with, was first track day in this car and my cheap chinese tyres didnt have the best grip. Water temp is a problem, can only stay out for 5 or 6 laps before crazy warning lights show up on the microtech telling me water is too hot, so i'll have to sort that out before next time.

Hopefully i'll have some pics up later of my drift laps.......lol fucking messy but first time ive ever tried it, i'll give it another shot next time aswell cos its really fun.

lol thanks, too bad it usually spins on turn 1.....or doesnt link turn 2. I'm going to give drift more of a shot though i think, if i can improve and start to learn weight transfer and start linking corners i'll be more keen to try drift prac days and such.

your improvement over the day was un-real and i only saw a fraction of your laps.

I really want to sort out my water temp problem before next time but have no idea what to do about it. Bigger radiator? Murder out the front bumper abit more for more air flow? Some sort of shroud? i dunno.....any suggestions?

if funds allow i think i'll get a bucket seat aswell....was stiff from bracing myself, the trecaros are so good for street but not so much the track.

Id get the rad and the entire cooling system flushed, new thermostat, and maybe a shroud and some more air before you start looking at new radiators... if not then maybe look at getting a thicker rad.

You did really well out there james, bit Imposing seeing a big-assed sedan flying up behind you in a 86 haha.

yeah thats probably not a bad idea. The stock 1j radiators are pretty damn huge things anyway which is why i'm abit supprised. I must add this cooling issue is only a track thing, on the street even on a 45 degree day i dont see temps over 92. Good in 1 way and bad in another....good cos i can still drive the thing to work but it also means i could waste time trying things and waiting till the next track day to find out they havn't solved my problem....hrmm.

lol at the last comment. It would have been funny just seeing the top of my helmet over the dash. i could insert a pretty lame lame simpsons quote here.:P

touge boy - next year i'd like to get a buddyparts half cage and an LSD.

immediate plans are KOYO radiator, cooling system flush, and a velo milano. That should solve my two biggest problems that i was having on the track, i moved around way too much and was hanging onto the steering wheel whilst also trying to steer :P

with summer comming up jays offer of the koyo rad at the price was way too good to pass up.

i was going to get it re-sprayed later in the new year too, i think i might put that one off for when my driving gets abit neater.. :P

Wheels?

I think this thing deserves some fresh SP1's or VS-KF's..... and a little more low. :)) Aside from that there's not much I would change. Shit's nigh on perfect for street use.Although Is there some sort of OEM aero available for the 81's?

Koyo rad and service of the cooling system should work wonders. Oil cooler will help with your water temps a little too, and obviously the oil temp haha.

yeah i wasn't gonna say wheels cos i just got the A80 stockies for it haha. I dont have the guts to drive the thing around on cool wheels and slammed. Having said that lately i've been thinking of how awesome it'd be to have a set of track wheels with semi slicks i can just swap over for mallala days and other occassions. Bronze te37s would look pretty rad with fresh white paint.....what ever the wheels they'd be lightweight and racey:yeah:

Anyway....i cant afford such things at the moment haha, also the A80 rims are still quite a nice size and offset with a very factory look.

As for OEM aero....ha i wish, you can get factory skirts and front lips but i havn't found any. There was a "yamaha edition" 81 which had like a factory bootlid spoiler and front lip etc....only 300 were made.

^cheers man. I'll probably muck around abit more on a private day first then try a drift prac night. I'd just like to be a bit more confident and neater before i start skidding with so many other cars around.

- Santa came early today down at buddyparts and left a koyo tripple core radiator in my car. Should bring down my water temps i get on the track, i've already noticed the water temp rises slower just driving around the street and sits at 84-86 rather than 88-92. So seems like its done the trick and should be able to stay out for more than 5 laps at a time now.

Pretty bored so thought i'd do a little update for those interested.

Next few weeks i'm getting a buddyparts half cage done and a new velo seat. With that in mind, this weekend i decided to strip the interior so i can repaint the floorpan and boot area properly and so that its easier for nick to crawl around in it making up the cage. Cranked the wire wheel on it today to get rid of the remaining bits of sound deadner and tacky glue, tomorrow i'll prep wash it and hopefully post some pics of progress.

EDITED with pics, looks nasty....scary haha. I will post more pictures post paint.

i'm doing a half cage, with two cross bars going to the wheel arches and a harness bar, like what jay has/had in in ae71.

Re: wheels....not even tempted, trust me if SAPOL weren't how they are i'd have some cool rims on it, at the moment as boring as stock A80 wheels are they are still light, good size and make it look like a camry, which is a good thing :hehe:

OK.....so i want peoples opinions on somthing i've been thinking about for awhile now.

As much as i dont want to think about it, i can tell that these stock turbo's are eventually going to give up the ghost. So long and short of it, do i save for a)aftermarket single like a GT3076 or 71......OR....... rebuild/highflow stockies. Factoring in the costs of single setup, i'm looking at a good 4k by the time cooler piping, exhaust, manifold etc etc is all done......or about 2.5-2.8k for rebuilt stockies.

I dont plan on doing either anytime soon....i.e not before i have to, BUT do want to decide on which option i should start putting money aside for, that way i can grab odd bits and pieces if they come up for sale cheap.

The difference in cost is considerable......the difference in power is huge. After market single could see 270-290 easy. 15psi through steel wheel stockies 220-230...hmmm

also possible sacrifices of response?

thoughts?

i need food for thought.

gt35r is your friend or any variant with a/r .70 from and .63 rear anda set of 550cc injectors, tunable ecu and...

you will see 300 rwkw + on only 16-17 psi

use stock cooler and just re do the turbo side of the cooler pipes, thats all mine is, although im not using gt35r, im using kkr430 with ext gate though im getting kkr to build me a 35r spec turbo .70 front/ .63 rear

James86
6th January 2010, 10:03 PM
yeah i have all the supporting mods. 33 GTR cooler, microtech ECU, 600cc injectors.

GT35 i trhought would be too laggy? i'd rather less power and bullshitb response?

when does yours make boost?

Touge Boy

3076R with .63 housing, 45mm External gate, GOOD manifold, and tuning.

250kw's just ticking over.;) and retarded response.

Or do it Jap style... HKS 3037pro kit. Probably the best kit you can put on a 1jz.

Seen the kits go 2nd hand for $2500. Turbo, mani, gate, lines, dump everything.

The yanks really seem to love the steel wheel high flows though, you'd crack 250 with them, apparently only 1000rpm laggier than stock.

And super stealth... less pipe work etc... whack on a set of dumps (If you dont have them, cant remember) and retune.

yeah i know aye, i like the power delivery of the stockies as the power comes on really nice and smooth rather than nothing nothing nothing BOOST wheelspin....crazy shit etc etc.

so its really hard to decide between a single conversion or a rebuild of the stockies, both have so many pro's and con's.

i have stock dump pipes btw. I will probably chuck my injectors in this year with some cams, retune and then probably realise abit more boost through the stockies will be plenty.

So yesterday i braved the 42 degree heat and painted the floor. Still needs another quick coat and going over in a few spots but i'll do that after the cage is done. Looks much better now i think and is a much wiser choice of colour for the inside of a floor, white started to look shit fast.

I had bought heaps of this rubber matting off the roll for my work van floor and also for the boot of this car. I had a fair bit left over so used it to make some floor matts :P Should make it abit quiter and help protect the floor abit.

didnt realise how bad the pics were till i got inside, you get the idea though.

Today i ordered some HKS CAMS :))

one of the site sponsers on NS.com had them going cheap as i think he'd ordered them in for another customer who backed out. They are just mild cams but should suit the kind of setup i'm aiming for.....mild :P

Any more lift than 9.0 and you start to need other bits and pieces anyway and can make it an interferance engine blah blah.

in 256 8.7 lift
ex 256 8.7 lift

not in any rush to get them in cos i wanna do timing belt and cam seals and what not at the same time, so maybe next month or early march.

Hey mate nice car :) ive also got an LX80 so your thread has made for some pretty interesting reading. One thing thats pretty interesting about your car is how its got IRS, do you know much about what's involved with the conversion, how much it costs, who can do it? Your advise would be really apreciated.

In regards to your turbo question; id stick with the twins there are plenty of people who make really good power on them (over 270rwkw) the most important thing you need to remember about the twins is that if you want to make good power you need to ditch the stock dumps and get a GOOD set of dumps. The problem with the stock one is that the merge point is to close to the turbos therfore the turbos are literally blowing in to each other. If you want i can get you the number of a guy who makes awesome dump pipes in adelaide.

hey mate.

As i didn't do the IRS conversion myself i dont really know the full extent of what's involved. 'BuddyParts' (forum sponser) did the conversion for me, i think it was just alot of work involved with cutting out mounts, moving a few things etc....but def do-able and has been 100% worth it, car is much better with it.

RE: turbo's....i'm pretty keen to stick with the standard ones and do some sort of rebuild to them. I have had a look at what sort of dump pipes people are using on the JZX forums and yeah, they've all said what a huge difference a good set with a later merge point makes. I was going to get AAA to give me a quote but who's the guy you know? could be interested...

so AndySan sold me on the idea of giving supersprints with the porsche club a go. Its happening on Feb 7 but starting to get ready for it now before it creeps up on me and its 1 week away and im not ready.

I'd love to get a Velo seat in before the day, need some new tyres but other than that pretty much all i have to do is a service and the usual list of safety regs. Considering getting a tow hook that would stick out my front bumper as i'm sure the standard position one wouldn't be accessable if the car was stuck in 2 feet of dirt.

Velo and buddyparts half cage at the end of the week :)

I do agree with whole post though especially last point hahah. I dont think a big single is in my budget or driving capabilities. I'll most probably get a nice set of dump pipes and rebuild the stockies, makes more sense for what i personaslly want out of the car. All be it a single will make a shitload more power for a bit extra dough.

yeah, i'll think more seriously about turbo upgrades later down the track i think. At this stage some sort of improvement on the stock twins is more likely since all my cooler piping is done and so is most of the exhaust, would be a shame to change things again.

Anyway AAA exhausts helped me out with a new intake pipe:))

the old red creature....even mallala scruiteneers hated this thing.

i think the next porsche supersprint day is late April. Having done that buddyparts private day i found today pretty frustrating, its alot cheaper but you only get like 4 laps per session and about 5-6 sessions at the most. For somone like me who is still very much learning i find it way better to be able to stay out for longer and get into abit of a rhythm.

Having said that i'll probably still attend the rest of the supersprint days over the year :P Some very cool cars to see. Next time i think i'll invest in some better tyres aswell.

James86
8th February 2010, 11:15 PM
So ever since i did the 1j conversion i've had a pretty notchy gearbox and a screwed 2nd gear syncro. Its progressively got worse and i can't select 2nd gear at all with high revs which makes the hairpins at mallala bloody hard and is even a pain for daily driving and hills.

Anyone on here have any ideas of what i could do in the future? It's not really going to be a short term fix as i'm pretty sure any option is going to be expensive. Who rebuilds gearbox's in Adelaide? I'd love some sort of un-breakable box but PPG have nothing for an R154....Just not sure whether its worth pulling a box apart to replace with factory toyota bearings and syncro's etc.

Andy San
9th February 2010, 08:35 PM
you could probably just re-lap the synchros and it would improve the gear selection issues, even if you had to replace a couple it would be a whole lot cheaper than a ppg set

James86
9th February 2010, 08:45 PM
yeah PPG dont make anything for the R154 anyway....i'm pretty sure. only W series boxes and the supra getrag ones. So don't think that's even an option.

I've found a few rebuild kits for $400-$500 and you get bearings, syncro's and a few other things that i dont know what they are hahha. But where/who in adelaide rebuilds g/boxes?

Would love to get it sorted cos holding 3rd in slow corners does cost alot of time.

Arent the T56's supposed to be just as baulky and a PITA to shift?

They are, but you won't damage them in a hurry, but high KM's do degrade shift quality, some VERY high KM examples feel like a broomstick in a meatgrinder.

Yeah, but better gearing, and stronger.

it's only 2nd thats giving me trouble, all others shift nice. I think this is one of those things thats going to have to break completely before i do somthing about it, i can't see a easy/cheap way out.

well, did some r5eading on toymods and supra forums last night. Seems i'm not the only one having shifting troubles with the R154, infact mine are pretty good compared to others ha. Heaps of people raved about this redline shock proof crap and others raved about castrol VMX80 saying it was just as good/the same shit for $35 for 4 litres rather than $135. So i'll give it a go, see what happens.

I'm trying to get the recaro out of my shed so if you want it have a look here...

Hoping to get my CAMS and Injectors in soon and a major service. After that i'm pretty much done with this thing, it's pretty good at what it does as it is. I've been dreaming of a 2nd set of wheels for the track though.....but it's all money i shouldn't be spending. Hrmm

won't be running 16s anytime soon. I definetely want another set of rims i can put semi's on and use for track days though. I'm thinking Enkei RPF01's or some gram lights :-)

won't be able to afford a set like that for a good few months though.

Car is looking sweet man new interior is tops. As for the oil IMHO I think you'll find the vmx80 isn't close to the quality of the redline. I ran both types and also the castrol synthetic 80 weight in my old awd laser boxes that were never particularly nice to shift to start with. I did feel a vast improvement when i switched to the redline lighweight shockproof in my gearset and heavyweight in my transfer set. that shit sticks to metal like shit to a blanket. After having my box rebuilt at considerable expense the builder would not warrant the box unless I ran redline. Vmx80 is just a standard gear oil where the redline is fully synthetic and it sticks to metal like no oil I have ever seen. Saying this it is a shirt load more expensive to purchase. I also had good results from adding a slick 50 gearbox additive when running the castrol oil but the improvement only lasted a few months then the box gave way.....again. Its horses for courses but as they say "oils aint oils".
best of luck with it and I hope to see this beast out at the track soon. Where do you get the supersprint info? I wouldn't mind bringing the KE out for a Thrash.

Yeah it's weird, the toymods/supra forum links say the exact opposite in regards to oil sdo i dunno...i'm going to put some nice torco stuff in and see how that goes.

As for supersprints i think asll the info you need is here...

http://www.pcsa.asn.au/PorscheClubs/pc_southaustralia/pc_main.nsf/web/5E3603D8E9B9859DC12571FE00006AFD

you need to become asn associate member of the porsche club which is $30 odd. Then once you're a member you can enter the events they put on. I noticed those guys are a little more strict on scruitineering so just make sure you read the supp regs, theyre abit different to just a normal mallala practice day.

well.... after nearly 2 years of hassle free motoring i got defected for roll cage and locked diff. Very disapointed i can't drive it on the street anymore or even sell it as a street car.

Anyway, pretty much decided i'll keep it as is and use it for drift prac's, supersprint days and anything else i can. Atleast now i can put some cool rims on it and stuff. Thought about trying to get it off defect but the to-do list i made off the top of my head, i just can't be bothered and don't think it's worth it.

stay tuned though, hopefully have some nice wheels in a few weeks.

yes and no. I had to replace the clutch not long after i did the 1j conversion. But jay and nick at buddyparts do all the work on the car not me, so i'm not sure if motor had to come out.

Going to hit up streeter for some R33 GTR wheels i think. Pretty keen to run something in that style and size/offset. If i have enough money i'd like to get them powder coated a darker gunmetal grey as well but i'll see what happens.
