yo?id like to spend less than $300.. can i get a decent one for that?mate i'm sorry but i have never seen a decent one. The snapon guy brought in his best one to display for us and it was all very good looking. but then i convinced him to let me test it out. well wasn't that a fail. as far as i have seen. they are not worth it.

but if you are really keen for under 300 bucks best bet would be to go to repco. and pretend you work for a local business and get trade price haha.

there are definitely good ones out there. im just hoping its got to the point now that there are good cheap ones, theyve been around a while.

but out of interest, why do you say there are no good ones? like, what is it the snap on one couldnt do?

tbh, whilst snap on shit is the bomb, id battery operated power tools arent their forte so.. maybe it was just a bit shit.

i need one to smash shit to pieces at the wreckers faster. i still love going and finding stuff.. just dont actually enjoy pulling it off..

saw theyve got cordless angle grinders now too! but i wouldnt be surprised if they were a bit shit..

dewalt ones on ebay are good for about 500. aussie sellers also offer 3yr warranty.

And it is sooooo worth having one, saves so much time, frustration and makes tek screws your friend!!!!

I've been borrowing an Hitachi one for a while now. Bearing in mind this is only to change wheel and nothing else. But its been awesome, when i get some spare cash im getting one. There are some on ebay for pretty good prices. Go for an 18v one though.

my mate always brings round his 18V dewalt one cos my compressor driven rattle gun is to weak!!!
Only problem is it either undoes the bolt or twists the head clean off the shaft!!

i bought a snap on one and its just awesome smashes normal sockets to bits etc but around the 7 or 800$ for it tho...

slydar
24th January 2009, 12:06 PM
ahh ok sweet. yeah i was hoping to do it for like $300ish. from like a decent qual' chinese one, which im guessing is what the trade quip one is.

hopefully trade tools do one of their own branding.

out of your price range but have a look at the milwakee battery rattle guns they put out 440nm of torque

I will be getting a snap-on 1/2 inch cordless rattle gun, they cost about 800$, but well worth it as my compressor is shit and wont run my blue point gun. I like the idea or cordless ones anyway, alot easier to use wherever you need to.

Im looking at getting a second one, I already have a 18V De Walt (bought to change tyres in the rally car) but it makes pulling apart things so easy I want a smaller one for smaller jobs as it just tooo fast on little bolts.
Be careful with some Ebay, some I seen on there dont have the right charger for Aust.
Spend a bit extra buy a good one its worth it.

and I have two batteries with mine and one is not as good as the other. the weaker battery will not always undo wheel nuts.

Snap On is 800+GST but does almost every harmonic balancer bolt, apart from Hondas.. but 300 buks will probably do a wheel nut and thats about it.. So becareful wat you gona buy..

Picked this up last week:
http://buy1.snapon.com/catalog/OBJECTS/54700/54647.JPG
Bit over 300$ (850$) But it was worth every cent. Has just as much power as my Blue-Point pneumatic rattle gun.

ive got one of those makita 18v cordless tool packs coming in the mail this week. so i totally intend on buying the new 1/2" rattle gun they just released. $350 for the skin (no battery or charger) and puts out 440nm with the added bonus of being makita so generally speaking nothing should ever go wrong with it

paid a bit over 2k off a legit makita dealer on ebay. they were SHITLOADS cheaper than tool shops

its pretty sweet stuff, just be interesting to see how long the latest generation of their tools lasts. certainly wont be anything like the oldschool

so snap on worth it?

deponds on how much you will use it. it seems to be alot better than the other brands.
they do make a 14.4v one that is almost half the size. it is $499. it was good value.

i think it was money well spent. makes pulling things apart fun. no more shaved knuckles from slipping with the breaker bar:DD

its only failed me once, yesterday, trying to get a the bolt of a harmonic balancer at slydars. had to go to the backup breaker bar i brought.

does a whole car worth of wheel nuts once or twice, leave it in the garage for 2 weeks, then it does it again, and again etc, i cant even remember where the charger is, came with 2 batteries. works well.

so AUTOBARN has a ROK 450nm 24v impact wrench for $250 bux!

now this is an ebay type brand and their 18v wrench only had 120nm at $170 which is just shit house so i have no idea how they made the 24v so much better.

who wants to buy one and give feed back :P

well I have my modified Dewalt running now and it leaves my air powered gun for dead. I am actually worried it's too much and it will start ripping my sockets to peices.

Might any of you guys know how these portable guns go in terms of life? like before the rattle mechinism or something else wears out?

hahahha! errrr hmmm ahhh, nothing readily comes to mind apart from some hand tools and some electric tools. it's not like I do it out for the sake of it, it's just that I end up improving things when I see something I don't like. Anyway here is the same battery pack that I use for my impact gun as it sits in my drill, I know it's rough but works great:

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/2/5/2/43270.jpg

5A/h and gives a whole lot more torque than original

Dan_J
4th May 2010, 10:19 PM
thats useful, good work.

i see thats a 18v impact drill? not a impact wrench

i use my 18v drill with a socket extension which makes it useful on already cracked bolts.

the sale at autobarn finish's on the 10th of this month, might go down and see if i can test it out on my wheels.

Sam-Q
4th May 2010, 10:25 PM
I have an impact wrench that the this pack clips into also, I was a bit vauge in my description. When I use it it makes my wheel nuts fly off like they where done up finger tight when they where at 90Nm, is that normal?

hitachi ones are good for cars. i use mine everyday at work on earthmoving equipment rips 24mm bolts undone, had it for 3 years goes good. just check the brushes yearly and replace if needed. the hammer action in these is perfect for a car as their torque isnt super high, but good enough

the snap on ones will snap off your wheel studs.... mate has one and these are crazy powerful. can undo 36mm head bolts peice of piss

hitachi ones should expect to pay around 600-700 for them
snap on around 900 or so

my 2 cents

Slightly OT, but how do you find the electric/battery line trimmer? Im considering one as i just cracked the cylinder head on my old one.

bigdaddykane
10th May 2010, 12:18 PM
ive just got a cheap $300 bosch drill with a bit that you can fit impact drivers on, somethings you can undo easily with it some you have to crack first, but makes working on the car so easy, tightens things up nicely to but i always check them with a ratchet after to make sure

11th May 2010, 06:02 PM
I'm another Hitachi 18v fan.

Runs on the same battery as the drill, and I have an angle grinder skin for it as well. The awesomeness of the angle grinder just can't be described adequately.

Dan_J
13th May 2010, 01:21 AM
so how do these 12/18 volt angle grinders sack up? how much noise do they make compared to the 240v like 1/2 3/4 times the noise ? so i can get some work done at night

^ my 18v $50 supercheap drill does heaps better then my 12v $100 bosh drill altho i would need some thing to match my 240v drill, i figure that would be a hitachi by the reviews above.

Sam-Q

I have an elcheapo 18V, its a little quieter but not by much

Dan_J
13th May 2010, 01:30 AM
r ok, i guess its not that much better but wud be useful at wreckers and wat not for rust and damage repair

Redwarf
13th May 2010, 08:49 AM
The noisiest thng about grinding/ cutting is the grinding/ cutting part. No matter what you use, it's going to be noisy.

It's got enough grunt to do almost as much as a 240v grinder. The only thing I've found that will seriously slow it down was cutting 6mm alloy.

18th August 2010, 10:42 PM
just a heads up AUTOBARN yet again has a ROK 450nm 24v impact wrench for $230 now

i use a 18v Snap-on one on the boss GTR track car, the 14v ones are useless, you should be able to talk any snap-on dealer to about $675 - $695 theres two battery options from memory

Do you guys think that a rattle gun with 220 Nm is enough to undo and redo wheel nuts?

Sam-Q
3rd September 2010, 05:49 PM
redo no probs, not that you should be doing that in the first place. I do up my wheel nuts to 90nm. As for undoing depends on who did it up

$750 for both with 2 Li batteries.

Does wheel nuts and suspension parts no problem.

so has anyone bought one for under $300 and its been good for changing wheels? obviously you crack and tension the nuts by hand but yeah im really over unscrewing wheel studs with a breaker bar.
