It's amazing how hard you can drive a car when you know 50 people are watching, the entry fee is paid, and the passanger is of the paying type. (And hopefully there's a AE86 shell at home.)

That is a goldmine of photos, thanks.

what engine is that?

Kid Karola
27th January 2010, 02:23 PM
Millington Diamond series II - It's a 2 ltr 250hp special build rally motor mainly used in Escorts, but seen 2.5 ltr reputably producing 350hp.

Course_Out
27th January 2010, 09:05 PM
Kid Karola is on the money, the Millington engine is the gun motor for rwd rally cars at the moment over in Ireland and the rest of the UK. I believe there is also an Aussie open wheel hill climb car running the engine as well, but the memory is hazy....

They are loosely based on a Cosworth YB and are available in 2L, 2.3L, 2.5L and 2.7L. In the Esky's and ae86's they are usually teamed with a 6 speed sequential. They are a sexy sexy motor and only cost 27,000GBP, altho they will sell you a head that will bolt onto your Ford Pinto motor if you prefer as that's what teh YB is based on. DO WANT.

Sweet motors! And for £20,000+ (http://www.britishrally.co.uk/classifieds_view.php?id=2500) they should be.

Like 2.4 280HP in this Escort - FUN! FUN! FUN!

Thats ME!! trying to get air. Hampton intro rallysprint, trying to get time in the car because silly little things kept failing like water pumps and head gaskets.

Pic taken just before a spark plug lead came off in recce for the night run then the TPS played up. got home and parked it 6 months.. was sick of silly little things breaking. looks reasonable in the photo buts its rough.

presume this is mike86 off BMSC?

and heres what it looked like before the previous owner got his hands on it with someone that knew how to drive it. used to send the back tyres off after about 5 stages.

if only guys realised 100 - 140 between trees get the adrenalin flowing more than 200 + on a circuit they might jack them back up to their right height and have a go. Rally tyres are cheaper then semi slicks (have bought both) too and rally is the original drift.

the tape on the strut brace is a spare fan belt, handy when you need it,

have some more somewhere but its hard to take photos when inside the car.
the quads make more induction noise than the exhaust does! poor little thing is running just a standard bigport with quads atm, but have a rebuilt smallport block, waiting for the budget to let me replace bolts with ARP ones and new cams (old ones got a bit hot)

Car is pretty rough in real life, its been a rally car for quite a few years. Currently bare metalling the sills and rear wheel arches due to surface rust from stone chips and finding a bit more body filler than I thought.

would like to put an airbox around the inlet runners but at their length (designed for its original motor) and position It looks a little complex

I only know of one video and I couldnt get a copy off the guy, it was magic you can hear the car coming for about 30 seconds before you could see it, motor rising and falling between 5- 7500 rpm, combination of induction and exhaust noise, taken from the same spot as the first picture.

found some more,

Rally de Femmes 2007 it ran in the forest around Canberra for women drivers only, ( the idea is to let your partners have a go for putting up with you all year) was partners first rally.

Dont know why but this is my favourite, doesnt look fast but I like it
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/1/6/0/7/36125.jpg
it also when I found out 4age headbolts are a use once item when racing. got the shits with the over heating so decided to go till the motor stopped (somehow it didnt) we did a 10 plus km stage and 30 transport with no water and we cooked the motor big time crank journals were blue and dizzy cap deformed under its own weight, cams dont look good.
Got to meet Neal Bates and the Toyota rally team because of it but. top Blokes.

Why isn't a Millington engine used more often (in Australia)?

2 reasons,

one is CAMS does not allow engine changes and can only run turbo if the car came from the factory with a turbo

the other is cost, you can build a good motor for less than the cost of a millington and then try and find someone who knows enough about it to tune and maintain it.

one wonders why rallying is dying in NSW under CAMS when we have other options that do allow engine changes. Cue AMSAG/ASAA debate

Why are Millington so expensive. Is it just because of the power they produce and the fact that building a 20v Blacktop (for example) takes more experience specialty tuning etc?

Why is anything expensive? Millington are a purpose built race Motor, pumping out a relilable 250 plus HP in NA form (McCrae was rumored to have ran 350 from a 2.5 L) , talking 15,000 plus British pounds second hand , based on a ford motor, makes a Beams 3SGE look like good value ,plus a lot of mechanics /tuners in Aus will probably never seen a Millington
