View Full Version : Golberg's 1GGTE RN85 Hilux

Well for those who know me personally, they may already know that a Hilux has been in the offing for a while now.

Anyhow on the 23rd of this month I went up to the Salavage auctions and picked up an RN85 single cab Hilux with a tub style tray.
Its been in a front ender but its not damaged enough that its actually not been written off (isn't on the WOVR). At some earlier point also, the tailgate has taken a bit of a knock and its also rusted out along the bottom.

Its got 340,000k's on the clock, a good 22R motor, and is overall in reasonable condition considering its a 20yo work ute. There isn't any bad rust apart from what is in the tailgate, and apart from that there is just the usual surface rust in places subject to wear.

I bought the ute for a couple of reasons, firstly I need something to throw my stuff into, for carying wheels, tyres, engines, diffs and all the other crap I tend to cart around. Secondly I'm after my own personal tow car (currently I borrow my dad's HDJ78 Landcruiser to tow).

Anyway I couldn't be content with just a plain old carbie 22R now could I. I'll be converting it to EFI, but I haven't 100% decided on the motor of choice (I've got a couple of options in half cuts lined up, but I wont say until I've made my final decision).

So here it is:

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/8/0/32576.jpg

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/8/0/32577.jpg

As for other plans, I found a set of 114.3 x 5 15 x 8 -0 (or there abouts) Simmonds in pieces at work, they need some restoring, but they'd come up good. Seeing as I'll be towing though, I'll probably slap some sunraisers on there for most of the time.

I'm going to give the interior a general clean up too, fix all the little broken things and put a pair of 4runnner SR5 seats in too. Apart from that I probably wont change much else. And obviously I'll have the front end fixed too.

Well this one has set me back $1900. Which is truly an awesome deal considering its a factory manual 100,000ks cut and comes fully dressed (all the front end panels included). So I anticipate making some money back on the front end and I figure I'll make something on the manual pedal box and other soarer specific manual parts (I will however be using the gearbox from the half cut).

It wouldn't surprise me though if it was the last 1G half cut to come into Australia. The importers just aren't doing them anymore, I called 10-20 importers and only found the one as a halfcut. I think SSS had a couple of them on their own (motor, box, loom & computer). But they were asking almost as much as this half cut. Most of the places I called though simply said to me that they wouldn't be bringing in anymore, they are just too old.

I learnt from my conversion on my red AE71 though that half cuts are the way to go. They save so much fucking around and ultimately save you money too.

Manual or Auto?

Manual, screw having anything else in a Hilux. Manual for towing also.

Overall I'm hoping that I'll come out without paying much for the cut. At work we sell 22R's for 1750 so I'll make a lot of my money back just selling the original engine.

Oh and yeah its going into the beaters on Wednesday to have the front fixed and also the tailgate.

It'll have a combination of chrome parts on the front:
- 89-91 Chrome front grill
- 91-97 Chrome bordered clear parklights
- 89-97 Chrome bar
- 89-97 Amber bar blinkers (may change to clear pending on how I think it looks)
- 89-97 Lower apron painted white

And no more of that stupid half bullbar crap.

I'll be right man, thanks for the offer though.

In other news I spent the whole day doing body work. My god the tailgate I got from work was so fucked.

As you can see there was a lot to fix, but in comparison to the one which is already on the ute its a lot better.

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/8/0/35346.jpg

Well I got a set of sunraisers as well, they were just sitting around in a pile of rims to be scrapped at work.

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/8/0/35347.jpg

Here is one of them, I slapped a tyre on to see what size I should run. I think I'll just run the standard 185R14C's because I still want the commercial load rating. So yeah they probably wont have those size tyres.
And my other plan is to probably get them sprayed black also as the chrome is dead.

Having some deep alloys would be nice, but I'm going to stick with the steel I think.

Just with the whole towing 2 ton, I'd rather have that weight resting on steel rims.

In other news, it was decided that the rad support needed to be replaced, so I got a new one and it was welded on this arvo. I should be right to pick it up from the beaters on Monday.

Tomorrow I'll be stripping out the half cut too.

The halfcut also came with a pretty pro looking pod filter enclosure box so I think I'll be keeping that for future use.

Golberg

Updates!

I've almost finished stripping the half cut. You can see here me lifting the shell off the engine and crossmember.

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/8/0/36693.jpg

I also got the Hilux back today, as you can see the rad support is much straighter. It actually ended up being replaced as it was the more simple and neat way to fix up the front end.

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/8/0/36694.jpg

And this is it supporting a dressed front, minus badge and bar indicators.

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/8/0/36695.jpg

So yeah its coming along, in other news I may have an abandoned MZ20 to 1GGZE conversion coming my way. They gave up because they couldn't get the mounts right... I figure I should have everything to make it work from the halfcut leftovers.

They aren't easy to find that's for sure.

I doubt there will be any more 1GGTE half cuts coming into Australia any more, importers just aren't interested in them.

One of the other yards mine intertrades with has a W56 box which I'm tossing up getting. Its a box from an RZN149 Hilux (later model) which differs from the W58 because its got extra low 1st & 2nd gears for load pulling. I'm not sure if I want to spend the coin though. We'll see.

I've got my heavy duty tow bar now
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/8/0/37549.jpg

I've cleaned the 1GGTE up now ready for installation, I just need to put in all new seals and its all about ready to go in (bar the engine mounts which I'm still sorting out).

Luckily for me also it came with a near new clutch in it too. I had a good look at the W58 it came with also and it has silicone sealant on the joins so clearly its been apart before. I question why though seeing as its only got 100,333km's on it. But I guess I'll never really know.

I have also ordered an RZN149 W56 box, I should get it this weekend.

I've also arranged the sale of the 22R so things are falling into place.

Well progress has been made!

I pulled out the old G52 which you can see in the above photo, as it turned out its even got a complementary hole in the side of the bell housing. The other thing I noticed is that somehow a tooth has been broken off the 22R flywheel which perhaps explains the occasional disinterest in cranking the ute had. So all in all I'm glad to be rid of both the 22R and the G52.

Anyhow I went about test fitting the 1GGTE using GA61 mounts and as expected the drag link fouls the sump, no big deal just give it a bit of hammering. What I hadn't planned for though was the handbrake pulley (that little thing sticking out of the firewall below the clutch master) getting in the way of the rear turbo inlet. Funnily enough also the clutch master fouls too. Luckily though thanks to a member on Toymods I was alerted to the fact that VZN130 4runners (V6 ones) actually run an internal pulley on the handbrake cable so its not there on the firewall at all. So I had a look into a 4runner and sure enough he was right, not only that but they also have an internal clutch master and a remote reservoir. Bam problem solved!

I think its a fitting time to start up a to do list also:

Clean W56 and install 1G bell housing
Replace all oil seals on both the W56 & 1GGTE
Finalise engine mounts
Bolt engine & gearbox in finally
Somehow work out where I'm going to fit an intercooler
Sort out a new radiator (thinking of going with a diesel Hilux rad with relocated outlets)
Get an airbox
Relocate battery to passenger side of engine bay
Find suitable hoses for power steering & air conditioning
Work out a fuel system
Remove entire interior bar headlining
Pressure wash the inside of the cab
Install VZN130 pedal box
Install brand new floor mat
Complete wiring harness
Fill with fluids
Test drive
Install uncracked dash
Install new antenna & stereo
Install Nokia bluetooth hands free kit
Install remaining interior
Get new rims painted or re polished
Upgrade headlights
Put on tyres
Drive the bitch
Consider brake upgrade
Consider getting engineers cert

There is more, but I'll update it as I go.

Hrm kinda sad when I look at it against the full list.

But alteast the Hilux is VERY clean inside and out now.

I need to get some pics up.

So its been a while hey?

I busted my wrist up pretty good and have been out of action for months now, but the wrist it all but good again now finally.

Anyhow since the last update the following has been done:
- The chassis mounts have been moved forwards now and welded back on
- I aquired a really good condition steering wheel (very hard to find)
- Got the rear vinyl matting out of a 4runner to properly cover the floor right to the back of the cab
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/8/0/54161.jpg
- Got myself a brake master cyl out of a LN130 Toyota Surf turbo diesel
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/8/0/54162.jpg
- Finished modifications to the firewall opening cover thingo where the steering column shaft goes though in order to clear the internal clutch master which I'm runing out of a VZN130 4Runner.
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/8/0/54163.jpg
- Got some near new shocks out of another Hilux
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/8/0/54164.jpg
- Got my very expensive gasket kit from Toyota (which I've been unable to fully install due to an impossibly tight harmonic balancer bolt)
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/8/0/54165.jpg
- Rebuilt the shifter from the RZN149 W56 box
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/8/0/54166.jpg
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/8/0/54167.jpg
- Got the fuel lines from an RZN149 (suit EFI)
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/8/0/54168.jpg
- Got a fuel tank out of an RZN149 (pictured here along side the standard RN85 tank). They are marginally longer and taller but otherwise mostly the same size and shape.
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/8/0/54169.jpg
- Also cut the battery tray out of an RZN149 (because its on the opposite side), then cleaned the thing up and worked out that it was going to sit the battery too high :(
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/8/0/54170.jpg
- Got the bits to convert the headlights to suit H4 bulbs
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/8/0/54171.jpg
- Borrowed a fucked 4runner bar from work to see how much space it would give me for an intercooler - much more than a standard bar it would seem
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/8/0/54172.jpg
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/8/0/54173.jpg

And this is what seems to happen when you stop working on your project car for a while too
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/8/0/54174.jpg

I've also been collecting SST's whenever I can find them
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/8/0/54175.jpg

So that just about rounds up the past many months work, but I'm back into it now so hopefully things will take off again

Golberg
28th May 2012, 07:56 PM
Its dead :(

Chassis has been scrapped
Body and tub went onto the damaged Hilux I bought (see bottom previous page)
Motor sold
Everything else was either used on the stock Hilux I put together, sold or binned.

Just last weekend I sold the 92 Hilux with this ones body and tub on it.

So no more Hilux's for me.

I got sick of it, 1G motor is FAR from bolt in (despite what the internet says). I've just got no time any more and I wasn't enjoying the project so I decided I'd be happier just to cut my losses and get rid of everything.

Instead my white AE71: http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/showthread.php/9588-No-5?p=876639#post876639 Will be a road registered track car, that I'll drive to the track rather than tow it.

In other news, sold my red AE71 also!
