View Full Version : My second car, twin carb 200B.

This is my 1977 Datsun 200B (810 Bluebird). It's one of the first 200Bs and as such it's the rare IRS model (most 200Bs in Oz had borg warner live axles) with an R160 diff. I use it as my second car (I daily both my cars), it's fun in an old school way and fairly torquey now that I've put the twin carbs etc on it.
This picture is how it sits now, but below is a quick run through my build over the year that I've owned the car.
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/1/0/7/3/33713.jpg

I copy pasted this from another forum I post in :)

It's a 1977 Datsun 200b (810 Bluebird in Japan), it's a very early model so it has the IRS rear end (most Oz delivered 200Bs had live axles as part of the Australian content thing).
It's a 2 owner car, for most of it's life it was owned by a WWII veteran, then recently a younger guy bought it. It's still pretty much in it's unmolested original state though. It's got a CD player and some speakers added but it's all been done without cutting anything which is nice.
It's a 4 speed manual with 135,000km, also it's got it's original NSW plates.
I want to keep it nice, easy to drive daily that has nothing about it's classicness really ruined.

I've not done anything inside apart from remove the stereo/sub the previous owner installed, but it should look nicer with a clean as well.

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/1/0/7/3/33715.jpg

Then I bought this A87 head, this casting has better combustion chambers than the standard L20B U67 casting with a nice quench area. They are also slightly smaller than the stock U67 at 41cc each.
I plan to use this better head with twin SU carbs from a 180B SSS. To do this I need to port the head's intake ports out to 1.5" from the 1.25" they are now. I'll also skim the head and rebuild it with the top end rebuild kit I also bought today, fun times!
The cam is of unknown spec, I've got to check and see which L series motor it came from (it's possibly not an L18 cam, although the head itself is from an L18).
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/1/0/7/3/33716.jpg
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/1/0/7/3/33717.jpg

So pulled it apart to see what I need to do to it.
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/1/0/7/3/33718.jpg

First off come the rocker retainer springs, then push the valves down with a screwdriver and wiggle the rockers out.
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/1/0/7/3/33719.jpg
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/1/0/7/3/33720.jpg

Next undo the cam retainer and slide the cam out. I think the cam is an L20B item, not an L18 one like the head. The cam and rockers are supposed to be matched (since they wear together) but on this head they likely aren't matched. Regardless I still numbered everything anyways.
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/1/0/7/3/33721.jpg
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/1/0/7/3/33722.jpg

Then get the valve spring compressor out, compress the springs and remove the collets.
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/1/0/7/3/33723.jpg

Slide out the valves, and your done :). You can see the valves are pretty carbonned up, even over the valve seats. It'll take some cleaning and then we'll see if we have to regrind the valve seats or weather I can just get away with cleaning it all up and seating the valves by hand and be done with it. Of course the head will be cleaned up at home then skimmed before I put it back together with new valve stem seals and so on later.
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/1/0/7/3/33724.jpg
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/1/0/7/3/33725.jpg

Cleaned up the valves and the head a bit. The valves have some pitting so I may get new ones, we'll see. The exhaust valves are the worst which I think is usual.
The whole lot was pretty crusty before but the head looks pretty good overall. The main thing is that the head isn't corroded or anything so it's a good base. Still more cleaning to do but I've cleaned up the combustion chambers at least.

Before.

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/1/0/7/3/33727.jpg
After.

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/1/0/7/3/33729.jpg

Test fitted my wheels, I brought these back from Japan with me when I moved back last year.
15x7 -1 and 15x7.5 -7 Longchamp XR4s.
Got to give all of them a good polish and clean up, and fit some tyres to the rears.

It should look the bomb (and the wheels should fit nicely) after I lower the car. I plan to just roll the front and rear guards at home, no extra flaring. It's an IRS so the rears should camber in under the guards nicely. I want the rear tyres tucked into the bodywork and the fronts in line with the guards.

Tyres up front are 195/60R15, which is pretty much the right size, so I'll probably put the same size on the rear to match the fronts (the fronts have a fair bit of life left in them). 195s on a 7.5 won't have uber stretch or anything but they should look quite nice me thinks.

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/1/0/7/3/33732.jpg
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/1/0/7/3/33733.jpg
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/1/0/7/3/33734.jpg

Then I got my twin carbs.
They are OEM style SU carbs. I was originally told they were SUs from an MG not the SUs made by Hitachi for Datsun but I now know they are actual Hitachi SUs. I'm also got an OEM airbox which I'm very pleased with. So I'll have old school OEM sports look.

They have 1.5" throats and the manifold splits into four 1.5" inlets. The A87 head has 1.25" inlet ports (unless you get a genuine SSS head, same casting but 1.5" ports). So I fitted just the inlet manifold and sprayed paint down the throats so I had a pattern for grinding out the inlet ports on my head to match the manifold.

I'll put a rebuild kit through the carbs and I'll have to set up a manual choke for these carbs in place of the automatic choke the standard 200B carb has. Obviously I'll clean up everything and paint whatever needs a lick of paint as well :).

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/1/0/7/3/33735.jpg

I ported the head out yesterday with a die grinder. Note that you don't want a super smooth finish in the inlet ports. The roughness will help with fuel atomisation. The inlets were originally 1.25" but are now 1.5" to match the SSS twin carb manifold. I sprayed paint down the runners, die ground the diameters to match then smoothed out the radiuses everywhere. Pleased :).
One done, one not.

All done
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/1/0/7/3/33738.jpg
Down two of the runners.
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/1/0/7/3/33739.jpg

I picked up some cheap wing mirrors in the same style as the OEM 200B wing mirrors. They are just cheap ones from Singapore, so they aren't perfect but they'll until I can pick up some better ones.
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/1/0/7/3/33740.jpg

Polished some of my wheels today.
Hand polished most and used a scotchbrite pad on a air dremel to do the spokes.
One down! Going to replace the rusted nuts/bolts with stainless ones.
Before and after on the 15x7.5 -7s.
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/1/0/7/3/33741.jpg
With the fronts in shot as well :).
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/1/0/7/3/33742.jpg

I've got new nuts and bolts for all 4 wheels now, I ended up getting zinc plated high tensile, although it's completely unnecessary. Pretty much just cos they didn't have the bolts I wanted in stainless.

Got my extractors, test fit is all good :).
Now to cut off the EGR pipe thingo and weld the hole up, then paint them and heat wrap them.
When the time comes I'll be scratch building the exhaust from 2" stainless steel.

So that was the first part when I first got the car till i'd owned it for a few months, then after a few more months I started doing some more work on it.

A brief update of all that I've done since posting last, mostly just pics cos I'm lazy :P.
Stripped everything out of the engine bay and sprayed the block.
Before:
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/1/0/7/3/33744.jpg
After:
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/1/0/7/3/33745.jpg
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/1/0/7/3/33746.jpg
I replaced the front springs with second hand low kings and replaced all the front suspension bushes and balljoints at this point as well.
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/1/0/7/3/33747.jpg
Then I painted the engine mounts and sump black so the engine looks all nice now.
Then I pulled the existing U67 head off the car and started transferring over the cam etc into the A87 head. It turns out I had a SSS cam so I used that (bit dialed onto a different dowel on the cam gear to get the most out of it.
After a bit of stuffing around with cam towers it was all good :).
Covered all the surface rust in the engine bay with rust converter and also cleaned up the block ready for the new head.
All good!
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/1/0/7/3/33748.jpg
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/1/0/7/3/33749.jpg
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/1/0/7/3/33750.jpg
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/1/0/7/3/33751.jpg
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/1/0/7/3/33752.jpg
Then I painted the engine bay and re-assembled. This is the short story, in between all this i had some troubles due to some of the machining on the head being done wrong and it throwing all the rocker geometry out but I got new valve seats put in and sorted it all and tada!
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/1/0/7/3/33753.jpg
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/1/0/7/3/33754.jpg
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/1/0/7/3/33755.jpg

Then I refitted all the remaining pieces that I had to do, hooked up the throttle linkage and set the stops (the original parts can be made to work with the SUs), hooked up all the fuel lines, remade the water lines and hooked them up and various other small things.
After that I set the float levels (something I should have actually done before I put the float bowls together haha) and put some ATF in the dash pots to damp them and started it up.

It ran quite well, it was loud (since I've only had the exhaust on down to the end of the extractors) and lots of smoke came out (off the freshly painted and heat wrapped exhaust) and the odd bit of coolant leaked out so after a getting it up to operating temperature I tightened up all the lines.

Next step was to balance the carbies, fit the rest of the exhaust and then do a wheel alignment.
At this stage the exhaust was 99% done, I got the mounting tabs cut to length and drilled all the mounting holes etc. The exhaust is 2" stainless steel. I bought lengths of stainless and mandrel bends and cut it all to fit etc at home and had dad tig it up for me.
Also I got some R31 rear struts with heavy duty standard height king springs on them, then cut them down by 1.5 coils each and fitted them out back. Car sits pretty good now, but i'd like to get shorter stroke shocks to get the springs captive :D.
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/1/0/7/3/33756.jpg
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/1/0/7/3/33757.jpg
I also redid the fuel lines a bit, used some titanium tubing (dad got it from work) to make the lines a bit neater where they split to go to the carbies.
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/1/0/7/3/33758.jpg
Washed it quickly.
And got some photos of the exhaust. The muffler hangs a bit low but i'm pretty happy with how it came out, it sounds good too and not too loud.
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/1/0/7/3/33759.jpg
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/1/0/7/3/33760.jpg

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/1/0/7/3/33762.jpg

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/1/0/7/3/33763.jpg
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/1/0/7/3/33764.jpg
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/1/0/7/3/33765.jpg
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/1/0/7/3/33766.jpg
Then I got the wheels ready and put them on and I got hold of some genuine wing mirrors to replace the copy ones I had (which I'm selling now by the way). I also tightend up the adjustment on the stearing box. So this is the car now :).
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/1/0/7/3/33767.jpg
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/1/0/7/3/33713.jpg

After all this the car is quite good. Torquey, reliable and it hasn't cost me the earth. I'm not sure where to go with it next, repair the minor amount of rust it has (mainly in the bonnet), respray and a Mk1 golf front lip, or perhaps think about selling it and moving onto another secondary car to play with. I dunno...

Yeah, my S12 was my first heavily modified car (I did minor mods to the two cars I had before that). I bought it stock with a blown CA20E and converted everything....I think i built that car....8 years ago? Maybe more now, I forget!
S13 SR20DET and box
IRS conversion
Long nose R200 2 way
Z31 turbo axles
MA70 intercooler
S13 front suspension
S14 brakes
etc etc

Most people remember it for the blue fur interior!

Good learning experience :). That car still exists, it's up in QLD 3 owners on now.

And of course I have my Silver S13 which I've had for about 5 years now.

In one of my random moments I'm considering finding a rough as guts AE86 to play with though....

Glad you all seem to like the 810 though, I'm pretty happy with how it sits. Actually, i'd just put it on the ground in that pic up there after fitting new front tyres (can see the stickers on them still haha) so i think it sits about 10mm lower in real life.

Idealy a rough car that other people are wary of haha. Basic neat mods and then use that for drifting instead of my Silvia sometimes. Get my skills up a bit more.

It looks really good for a 200b I usually dont like 180B's and 200B's that much but this doesn't look half bad and its so simple. My favourite datto is a 1200 coupe they look awesome! I hate 1200 utes they're like an asshole. I use to have a datto 1500 ute (620) I'd ring wreckers for parts and be like its a 1500 ute and they're like no you mean a 1200 and I'm like no a 620 1500 and they're like you mean a 720. Its like hardly anyone knew what a 620 was.

Havn't updated this in a long time but this is a bunch of stuff i did on the car just before xmas :). Car is off the road this year to be worked on.
Pasted from another forum.

Cut out the rear quarters on the weekend, next, clean up the light corrosion that is still present, trim up the repair sections etc etc etc etc :).

You can see on one side that there was a repair done previously (and you can see on that side there is bog from that repair, and also that the old guy who owned this car previously had backed it all into something at some point and dinged it too haha).

Also i've had these parts for aaaages, but i got them out to play with. My spare U67 head and ZX7R carbies (38mm throats), i plan on using these together on the next engine, a 10:1 comp L20B (or maybe a bit bigger if i can get a Z22 crank :)). DIY tubular manifold will be made to take these :).

I also went and stripped a 200B wreck for it's AC system (still holding gas!) and towbar and other misc little bits and pieces on the weekend :).

So got a fair bit done on the Datto lately, cut all the rust out of the car, treated it all, and made up a bunch of patches to repair the rusted areas.
This is one of the patches i made (for the drivers side rear door), and the section of rust affected panel that i previously removed.
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/1/0/7/3/307951.jpg
Cut em out with these, very good quality snips. I'm using 0.9mm zinc anneal as the repair section by the way.
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/1/0/7/3/307952.jpg
This is the repair section cut and shaped (got a bit of a curve on it to follow the door) mocked up on the car.
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/1/0/7/3/307953.jpg
And then the section welded in, the welds aren't continuous, they're basically a bunch of tacks, made with a bit of time in between each one so not too much heat goes into the panel, causing the panel to warp. The welds will be ground back smooth next.
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/1/0/7/3/307954.jpg
The drivers rear guard had a rust spot going through both outer and inner guard where the two bits of metal touch and water had gotten under the internal sealant. So this is the inner guard repair.

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/1/0/7/3/307956.jpg
And this the outer.
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/1/0/7/3/307957.jpg
The passengers front door had rust extending into the part of the panel that folds around the inner door and is spot welded. So i made the repair panel to match, folding the panel around some offcuts of 0.9mm zinc anneal to get the right fold profile.
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/1/0/7/3/307958.jpg
Fits on the car like this.
Outer.

Inner
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/1/0/7/3/307960.jpg
And the rear passenger door too, held in place with one of the clips dad made up for panel work years ago. They'll be welded soon and then the rear 1/4s will be welded and it'll be time to grind all the repairs back and prepare for paint and so on.
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/1/0/7/3/307961.jpg

So dad did a bit of welding for me on the weekend while I wasn't there, which was nice, and the welds on the previous repairs are now all ground down as well.
This is the result so far.

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/1/0/7/3/307963.jpg

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/1/0/7/3/307966.jpg

So that leaves both rear 1/4s as final parts that need attention. I have some repair panels from autocables, they cost about $60ea, but they (as with most repair panels) aren't anywhere near perfect. Had to flatten them out at the bottom as the curved under the rear of the car way too much, this had the affect of flattening one of the folds in the centre of the panels and making them quite wavy as well. The fold will be re-added soon though.
Got the joggling tool out to joggle the rear 1/4 panel in a bit, i'm still trimming the repair section to suit as well, more work to be done this arvo...

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/1/0/7/3/307968.jpg

Rear 1/4 patches are 99% ready to weld in now :).
Note my totally dry and lovely work environment, ie the edge of the carport where i get rained on, lols!

More work done!
Dad welded in the rear quarter patches the other day that i had cut down and reshaped from autocables patch panels.
I started grinding back the welds yesterday (only had like half an hour to work on the car), getting close to done now!

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/1/0/7/3/307972.jpg

That's where the car has sat since then (well apart from a coat of primer over each repair), been busy with other stuff. I'll get back to it soon enough, it's at the smooth over the repairs stage currently. Front guards need a bit of work too, they're a bit dented but rust free.
If anyone knows of a 200B bonnet that isn't rusted to buggery going around i'd love to hear about it!

This is seriously top work dude! Best build thread on here- even if it is passed on from another forum. Plenty of pics and details.

I own two RT104 (1975 and 1979) Coronas that I daily and a 200B wagon hiding in the shed, keep up the old school love! =D

Awesome build, awesome car, I used to love the look of these as a kid, you've rekindled my love for them :D

Good to see the rust is being taken care of properly, too many otherwise good cars are sent to the scrapheap just because of a bit of rust.

That looks tits mate!
What is the width (LH to RH) measurement on the Golf lip?
Do they bolt up to flat front KE's?

Can see the lip better in these shots

Awesome man, just a rough measurement will do.
