Hey guys I'm Tom or Heafy to some. Im pretty new to this forum. I joined when i saw Marv's ra65 coupe for sale a little while back. I ended up buying it off him after it got defected etc. I plan on running the car as Marv created it for a while, whilst adding to it etc. with a possible re-shell down the track.

Cusco Strut brace,
koni yellow adjustable shocks with cut ford falcon king springs in rear,
Disk rear end conversion,
14x8 -10 with RE001,
2 x Random 14x7 burners on rear

Inside:
Fixed Back Bride,

Outside:
awesome stickers and weatherstrips.

Engine + Drive line

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/4/0/4/2/35530.jpgeasy does it. car is soooo looowwwww

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/4/0/4/2/35532.jpgracing gunnnzzzzz :p time to get on the track and drive this beast (first time driving this car.... or drifting for that matter)

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/4/0/4/2/35533.jpgOne of Marv's mates that i had met somewhere previously. Sorry im bad with names, Simon? mogrish? the dude with the chaser wagon and sweet 1jz powered ra65 coupe! anyway he gave me pointers and came with for fist few laps. after a few drive arounds and a tutorial this was the result! Awesome fun.

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/4/0/4/2/35535.jpgend of a good night. stopped at the servo for foods. Thats ben smack talking about something on the bonnet. he plans to get a ke70 or something similar soon to start drifting also.

So that was pretty awesome fun. good purchase methinks. And many thanks to Marv for being patient and honest through the whole process even with my sometimes retarded questions and constant txt messages. :) Will post again soon with details and pics on the oil filter relocater i fitted the following day.

hey 15lide, im in toowoomba but just out of town towards hifeilds area. chances are ive seen or met u somewhere if ur in tbar. it can be a small place sometimes. Car was sold without rego due to defect and i just have to go thru regular process of roadworthy and then rego if i want to drive it on the road. which i may or may not do. its a not at this point tho. but i am seeing the benifit of not having to buy a car trailer to go to and from archie. so i dunno. we shall see what time and money permits as weeks move on ;)

hey tom its very simple to replace the gas shocks inside the struts. Once the springs are off you can take the shocks out by undoing the gland nut. Nice purchase

Beefy_Heafy
30th January 2010, 10:50 AM
thanks dave! that makes it all seem pretty simple. now if only i can find somone in town who will rebuild them. any of u tbar peeps know?

marvis
30th January 2010, 12:43 PM
^ I think that's incorrect. He might be thinking about struts which have been converted.

So yeah there u have it. Marv told me that the front struts needed replacing but i had a question. i know i can separate the spring from the coil over unit but is there a way to break it down further than that so i can just replace the gas cylinder part that isn't working properly? or do i have to replace the whole unit with the adjustable ring things and mounts at bottom? sorry noob question, haven't worked on sussy before.
I wouldn't bother, Just buy new coilovers, they can be had from anywhere from $400 for seconds.

LOL Morgish! He hates me so much.. And everyone really.

That would be simon mercer you are talking about. The 1j celica is a hatch :P

What temps does it run at without the cooler?

Good to see this has gone to a good home. :)

new coilovers would be easiest option. probly see you around toowoomba if you ever register it. if you need a hand with any suspension stuff give me a yell. i work at Topp Steer 10 Donation lane. across from butlers toyota.

goodluck with it mate :)

Yeah the tom's stickers make it super awesome, good call marv. my old man pointed that out also. It was running around the 60degree mark at archie, which is pretty cool. and once i got the oil temp hooked up and was revving it in garage i couldnt hardly get it over 50 on the water temp and the oil temp starts at 50 so no luck there either. any different to how it was for u?
And thanks for the tips on the coilover situation guys. 45kids Ive got tomorrow (Sunday) free until about 12ish when i have to get rdy for work if u wanna have a look. there is a nut i just cant get undone on the left front coilover. i bent my breaker bar on it.

Beefy_Heafy

so i got the car bailed up in the garage atm. Ive got this spare greddy oil relocator for an r32gtr sitting around. i originally had it fitted to my mk3 turbo A supra but i changed out to a completely different setup for various reasons. Since the car has an oil temp gauge but nowhere to put the probe (car was sold without oil cooler) i thought this would be a really good way to get it working again, and changing the oil filter on this model can at times be a pain in the ass. win win situation.

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/4/0/4/2/35656.jpg

Satan dog loves to help.

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/4/0/4/2/35657.jpg

its a pretty nice bit of kit really. glad i found a use for it.
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/4/0/4/2/35658.jpg

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/4/0/4/2/35659.jpg

the kit came with earls clamps, same style as what u can see in the pic except they had shiny blue collars. the earls clamps failed pretty quickly when tightened and i stole the collars for the Supra's catch can . so im gunna trust greddy's judgement on that one and continue with the type of clamp that the kit came with (although i have double clamped). no leakages with revving up to 100psi oil pressure in garage so far. but ill be looking for extra security at first sign of trouble.

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/4/0/4/2/35660.jpg

so thats the final placement. best place that the kits original lines will allow. its really hard to buy jap spec lines around here. the local performance shop just sells American spec stuff which is too small or too large (part of the reason i ditched the kit on the supra).

Oh and marv, can u tell me when the next oil/filter change is due?

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/4/0/4/2/35661.jpg

thats the oil relocator and filter setup i have on my supra. It goes from one side of the engine to the other and back again via raised section on the underside of the sump. Note the awesome speedflow fittings and pro flow reuseable stainless steel filter on filter magnet :D

marvis
31st January 2010, 12:57 AM
I did that filter and oil the wends before I did archie, did archie and like... 100kms? So I would change it in 900?. Should be sweet for semi next change.

Temps were about that.

sliding/ a bit of thrashing they would both see around 80, 90. The oil cooler I had has a valve in it which opens depending on temps, as it was made for a rotary, it probably didn't open much.

I really don't know why I bought them K&N filters, the nut on them are shit. Did you have fun getting it off?

Beefy_Heafy
31st January 2010, 01:16 AM
yeah ill have a look at penrite's semi syn and see what i like for next change. gunna be running penrite in supra also. totally should get sponsorship :p yeah the nut on the top of that thing was an absolute fail. was considering harpooning the bitch with a screwdriver but cbf going to buy new one so i managed to get a set of those vice grip things onto it. worked a treat, 1/16 a turn at a time. cant wait to get this rig back out to archie. having $$$ issues atm tho. hows mira? running okay now?

Yo marv. Yeah lowdown is doing awesome. Although it hasn't really been out of the yard due to its crime status. I turn it over once every couple of days, tho the battery keeps going flat, i think it might be shorting on something??? Ive been spending all my time and money getting turbo A working (will do epic build thread soonz) just need some extra time and cash to take the coupe out to archie a few more times. Would be good to get out there tho, its soo much fun. Wouldnt mind catching up also. some mates might pay for archie and other expenses so they can come to and ride with. Got the Turbo A running on thursday night! Getting roadie and modplate on monday. drove it up and down driveway a few dozen times. hit boost once. was brutal. virgin turbo win! Heat wrapping makes me feel like a pincushion tho. oil pressure and air fuel ratios look good so far. lets see if i can get more than 40km out of this rebuild :p

ill-minded
6th March 2010, 05:01 PM
is that the manual with all the RWD celicas? or just the RA6x models? the latter is more in depth. i have a copy floating around at home in cairns.

Beefy_Heafy
22nd June 2011, 07:50 PM
yeah i reckon. it didnt make much sense to me. found out what it was pretty quickly. also i found a vaccum leak in the pcv system that was allowing the engine to suck unmetered air via the tappet cover.
Now ive fixed that up its gained a few hp and runs a lot smoother with better starting and response.
Might see if i can advance the timing a little more and get better mid / high range power!

FFS. Busted clutch master. In the last 6 months I've busted and replaced 2 clutch slaves. And now the master (which I replaced with oem Toyota along with the slave about 3 Years ago) has gone also. I'm wondering if I'm doing something i could be doing wrong with them or is it just the drifting and or bad luck that's breaking them

some presents arrived for the red dragon today!

a 1982 usdm ma61, 5m-ge AFM AND THROTTLE BODY!!!

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/4/0/4/2/233030.jpg

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/4/0/4/2/233032.jpg

the reason the model and year of ma61 is so specific is because i needed a specific part number afm and throttle body.
this particular models afm is a direct plug and play unit that shares the same electronics and plug as the standard afm and its about +20% larger internally. which is a hell good upgrade for the shitty restrictive standard 22r afm.

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/4/0/4/2/233034.jpg
inside of 5m afm

plug

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/4/0/4/2/233038.jpg
toyota part number 22250-43110
nd part number 197110-3020

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/4/0/4/2/233040.jpg
5m on left 22r on right

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/4/0/4/2/233042.jpg
above 22r below 5m

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/4/0/4/2/233044.jpg
5m AFM installed, needed a new intake pipe as the new AFM has a 3'' inlet and outlet. perfect for my pod filter. but not perfect for the original 2 3/4 inch intake pipe.

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/4/0/4/2/233046.jpg
comparison pic of throttles.

also the TB off this particular mk2 supra shared the same TPS electronics and plug and also has a wheel type throttle linkage which is easier to attach than the slide type linkage that is on some other 5m engines. This TB is 60mm which again is a decent upgrade from the standard 55mm unit.

the plan with the throttle body is to get the pelenum off a newer 22r out of a 4runner or similar. it apparently has better flow characteristics. i will then bore out the TB flange to suit the 60mm 5mge TB and then figure a way to get the throttle linkage adapted and working before swapping out the old gear for new.

The AFM however went straight in. no issues. works fine, car idles and drives as per usual. however when driven in anger it is a fair bit more punchy, the engine note is more aggressive and the power extends deeper into the rev range. The engine was choking on the restrictive old AFM. this AFM allows the upgraded cam to breathe and do its job right. The engine as a whole has only a little more max power but is much more rev happy with a better longer power curve.

i call dibs on 22r parts when you go beams!!! hahah

lol. theres a few of them isnt there

got new coilovers and brake rotors with green stuff pads (s13 front and mx73 rear)

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/4/0/4/2/234905.jpg

its a mixed set. s13 front ae86 rear. spring rates are 8kg front 6kg rear

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/4/0/4/2/234907.jpg

they are "BC" coilovers. not my first pick but they were cheap and available. I wasn't expecting much so i was pleasantly surprised to find that they seem like pretty good quality. we shall see how they perform in the long term.

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/4/0/4/2/234909.jpg

i like the way that the adjustable spring seat fitted. its all in nice and snug.

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/4/0/4/2/234917.jpg

fresh rotors and pads look great.

took it out for a spin and to start bedding in the pads.
the coilovers are pretty good so far. have them set to 18/30 on the front and 25/30 on the rear. I might dial fronts down to 15 and then 12 as im finding its a little more understeer biased and a little skittish over rough surfaces in the front than it used to be.
other than that, the new sussy is nice as it makes NO NOISE! the old stuff was all shagged out in the pillowballs etc was making some terrible thumping and creaking. also its more comfortable that the old stuff. actually its ride is quite reasonable.

will take pics of stance tomorrow maybe.

coFF33

your rear spring perch is upside down.
the adjustable perch sits at the top against the body. and the spring coil sits on the lower trailing arm.

Apart from that , good shit man!! :)

Jacobxxx
27th September 2011, 11:02 AM
I thought the height adjustable seats didn't work for IRS?

Beefy_Heafy
27th September 2011, 11:25 AM
Yeah I totally couldn't tell what way up they were meant to be. I fiddled around for a while and they seem to fit this way best. If I turn them up the other way im not sure they would be accessible to adjust around the inner fender wall that would shroud the top of the perch. But I'll give it a shot. Should be okay.

This is my first time fitting a suspension setup like this. And I'm putting it in the wrong car with no instructions. Haha recipe for disaster :p

They seem to work well upside down though. What are possible issues from having them this way up?

Thanks for the tips guys!

coFF33
27th September 2011, 11:38 AM
Well with the short stroke shocks that come with the rears (i have MX73 Megan racing in my JZA61) once the trailing arm is raised enough to actually put the shock on it keeps the adjustable perch and spring captive. Although pre tensioned springs make for a bouncey ride, but really its not a MAJOR concern.

BUT

You'll see that on your trailing arm, the base or bottom perch from factory is curved in a certain way.
So when you putthe adjustable perch at the top against the body
And note that the spring has a flat side and a curved side,
The flat side obviously sits against the adjustable perch up the top, and the curved side of the spring sits on the curved base perch on the trailing arm.

A guy that drifts here in Perth with a 1JZ MX73 has setup his the same way as you have, he has never had an issue. But from what i can see... its wrong.

Beefy_Heafy
27th September 2011, 12:29 PM
Yeah the spring would sit more correctly the other way up. I'll try flipping them over and see what happens. There is body length adjustment in the shock also so I'm able to adjust so that the shock is mounted with only the smallest amount of pre tension on the spring to hold it in place at the shocks full extension.

coFF33
27th September 2011, 12:55 PM
im still fiddling with mine every event ,
if i want to make the car as low as i want it to be for sliding, the spring always has pre-tension ...

so annoying.. dont really know how to overcome it.

Beefy_Heafy
27th September 2011, 01:21 PM

went and visited rally mechanic dude today (craig) as he had finished making my castor rods.

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/4/0/4/2/239152.jpg

pretty happy with how these turned out. except i didn't get as much castor as i would have liked (4 1/4 degrees) will need to get castor adjustable camber tops or rose jointed lca's to get more out of them.

when doing an alignment after installation craig found that the outside mount for the rear swing arm was flogged out really bad (think f***** shopping trolly castor)

i didn't take any pictures as i was too busy thinking of best way to fix and how many $$$ it was costing me :P

really really surprised that i managed to pilot this death trap the other night. as the toe on the rear right wheel was constantly fluctuating between +20mm to -20mm... or there abouts. it was really bad. used a big ass washer to weld the bolt to the mount. good as new!

Yeah I totally couldn't tell what way up they were meant to be. I fiddled around for a while and they seem to fit this way best. If I turn them up the other way im not sure they would be accessible to adjust around the inner fender wall that would shroud the top of the perch. But I'll give it a shot. Should be okay.

so if you put them the other way, like over top of the bumpstop cone thingo they cant be adjusted on car?? im just curious as im thinking of buying some for the rona seeing as they are the same rear end, that or just getting long springs and cutting to length haha

oh yeah. the only reason is because on the celica there is a sheathe of inner fender wall obscuring the space u would need to adjust the spring seat with the seat facing upward. i still haven't turned mine over. i have some rubbers jammed up in the top that allow it to sit well.

I would totally have the spring hat? on the top! It's how it's designed.

Also, preload FTW!
