all painting done with this 2.5hp 50lt piece of shit compressor. Some tools you will most probably use

mark out the dents. the quickly run over the panel with 240 with a interface pad. apply some guide coat.
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/1/7/9/6/34923.jpghttp://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/1/7/9/6/34924.jpghttp://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/1/7/9/6/34925.jpg
rub with some 120 using a speed file. rub to the left nice big even strokes then to the right. you should see a crisscross pattern appear

keep rubbing till all the black is gone. if you have some ripples, you may need to apply another coat. if you have some chips like i did, you can buzz them out a bit then board file them flat.
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/1/7/9/6/34929.jpghttp://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/1/7/9/6/34930.jpghttp://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/1/7/9/6/34931.jpg
i had a couple of small dents. grab a bit of 120 and scuff the dent. wipe over with thinners. apply body filler. when dry apply guide coat. board file till all the black is gone. have a feel if needed guide coat again and rub some more.

buzz over the panel with 400. making sure you get the edges to bare metal.
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/1/7/9/6/34938.jpghttp://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/1/7/9/6/34939.jpghttp://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/1/7/9/6/34940.jpg
blow if off and wipe down with water. wipe over with wax&grease remover.

2k primer with normal hardener and normal thinners mixed 4.1.1, stan s4000 1.8 HPLV works a fucking treat on such a shit compressor. now sparying primer first with a half coat. let it dry for ruffly 3-5min. then apple a full coat wait 5mins, then another one wait 5mins and one more for luck. place in sun for a few hours.

far out that came out nice. well done.

i missed out most of those steps when i did mine.....i can see the advantages of taking the doors off, working with them on the car is a pain....thus there are still dents in mine:P

what kind of paint are you using? since you arent rubbing it back i assume 2-pak or enamel?

Well played!

enamel in sides coz its easy and will go over almost anything and 2 pack out sides coz i wouldn't use anything else on the out side.
still needs a minor polishing. came out pretty well considering the compressor and the whole spraying out doors.

i for got to add with a compressor like that, be prepared to stop after like 4 strokes and wait for it to refill the tank with pressure or prepared to go really slow with your gun control.

didnt die to much from the 2-pak fumes?

i was gonna go 2-pak, purely for the fact that it was shine off the gun (or close to), but yer was a bit wary of the fumes. but ended up going acrylic (and the fumes were bad enough!), and was to lazy to buff back the clear coat for about 1yr....

I was under the impression that 2 pack doesnt properly harden unless baked and that it is extremely dangerous to spray outside of a booth.

Im just curious as i will be re-spraying my 64 Pontiac Parisienne in the next couple of months, and was planning on using acrylic as i had been told that you cant get a decent finish with 2 pack unless it is sprayed in a booth (and also cause im a tight ass lol). I have also been told that 2 pack is considerably harder to paint than acrylic, did you find this to be true?

Cheers

did u use an oven because it doesnt look like you did for the 2pack?
care to elaborate please.

70XIN

^ He didn't. 2-pack dries fine without an oven, it just takes a while for the paint to *completely* harden.

no booth it was 43o when i painted it . a booth & good air pressure would of been better. i painted it in my carport on gravel.

Haha, yeah tell me about it. Thinking of doing the engine bay with some left over enamel i have. Will use the 2000w bar heater, 3000w of halogen lamps and the heatgun.

Mr Awsome
12th July 2010, 04:38 PM
enamel will dry super quick in any weather. and with the added arsenal of heating instruments you have. it should dry pretty well for you.

Can you get Wet and Dry in velcro backed discs? Ive been looking around and cant find squat in wet and dry.

Mr Awsome
12th July 2010, 10:02 PM
yeah norton do them and so does 3M. you will find most of the quality brands will have a wet and dry velcro back why do you want to use it wet for? just wet rub with 800 before paint. it will cost you alot less. there like $50-$70 for a box of 50 soft back or 100 flat disc.

Just for cutting back bog and the like. Pads im using now are getting quite clogged with the fine paint/bog dust.

Mr Awsome
13th July 2010, 12:41 AM
use a course 40-80 grit disc for cutting the bog back a little bit. but then you will have to use a block with finer paper to get it flat.

takai
13th July 2010, 10:29 AM
Yeah, using a 120 atm as that is all i had. Will try and find some 40. Not big areas of bog, just filling all the bolt holes in the engine bay...
