View Full Version : Tally's JDM KE25 Build Up Round 2

Tally

Hey Guys

As I'm not making AJD I thought I might as-well put up a thread :P

Have been a bit absent from the scene last year or so, sold my KE70 mid 09, bought a T18, sold that, bought a 5K KE70, swapped that for nickyboys KE30, sold that to greenmac80 and now driving a 95 Hiace haha.

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4042/4380914541_e0975fff41.jpg

So quick summary of the history of my KE25:

Basically it was a Adelaide Hills car, from Inglewood/Paracombe.
Found by Mattie and Chris while doing a hills run. Old guy had it sitting out front for sale. This was start of 2007. I bought it mid 07.
Car had been off the road for (now) 19 years. Here is a link to my old thread when I first got it: http://www.rollaclub.com/board/index.php?showtopic=14164

Anyways that's all in the past, 2 years on and after being Patient and saving money and buying/collecting bits and pieces I finally found the time to fix it up properly.

Told dad get your Karmen Ghia out the shed. He was more then happy to re-live his days of fixing cars, HQ Monaro's, VW's, RT140 Coronas (he bought and sold) and RA28 Celica's etc etc.

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4036/4381571496_b6be61d4a8.jpg http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4001/4380816253_07fff0dfe4.jpg

So basically got it in the shed, stripped the front end as that needed the most attention. Dad got me sanding so I had started sanding the car down.
This made me become familiar with the car and find all the spots that needed attention.
Had been in a previous accident (looks like kangaroo) and the front passenger radiator support was mangled. It had been repaired but very poorly done.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2795/4381574322_03c4fb86dc.jpg

So we got it as best as we could, thanks to ke30dude for the replacement panel off his KE20, was a bit different but everything lines up so can't complain.

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4069/4381585554_cc16b57b91.jpg

After we had done that. I cleaned it all up as best as I could, grinded back the welds, put couple skims of bog in the engine bay, removed battery tray, did a lot of panel beating, shaped everything best I could.
Then prepped engine bay and sprayed some Hi-fill primer to fill in all the slight low spots etc
Dad found me some body deadner he used to use, in the shed, tested it and it was still good so did inside the front wheel wells. Looks a lot better.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2735/4380830561_0f9347ace3.jpg

Then after some minor repairs and rust treatment on the body we got it looking pretty straight. After the hard work of sanding and feathering in all the bear metal patches we got the compressor and hit it with its first stage of Hi-fill primer and guide coat.

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4062/4381591416_6681c962b5.jpg http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2659/4380838919_06c7d72499.jpg

Then blocked it back sometime later and hit it with another coat of fresh Hi-fill primer and guide coat yesterday night.
So this is what I am up to at the moment.
At this rate ill have it painted in the next month or so.

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4011/4380844751_a621dbe913.jpg http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4071/4381606184_726ac119bf.jpg

We have started repairing my front apron, guards and bonnet, all of which have minimal rust :D and are pretty straight already... must have been replaced at some stage in the 80s lol

ok so here are my plans:

Make/Model:
1974 Toyota KE25 Corolla 1200 Coupe Deluxe

Exterior:
Will be painting an original colour (none of this fancy crap), undecided but might paint same colour or white. Need paint code as I'm not sure if this is D3??? It looks a lot more yellowy and D3 looks more darker
JDM Fender Mirrors
14" SSR MK2s with gold centers are the wheels I'm going to get for it

Engine:
Will be doing an engine conversion later on down the track (one thing at a time)
For time being have a 4K with K50 for cruising

Brakes and Suspension:
ADM AE86 Struts and Brakes with yet to be decided brake master cylinder upgrade
Will work out aftermarket springs and shocks later on
Have Brand New PS Arms
All new utherane bushes thanks to Pedders prospect! Top guys!
All new idler arm, pitman arm, tie rods and ball-joints
Fully powder coated LCA's, swaybar, x-member, castor rods, sump guard etc etc
Also will upgrade my leaf springs to match the front upgrade

Interior:
Completely original apart from Nardi steering wheel and JDM Tacho Dash Cluster

so there you have it. ;) any input would be great :)

Want to give a big THANKS to the following people: SLO-030, greenmac80, ke30dude, RA28 Mustang, sliesh, madmax7, Ae71Rola, 13BT_KE20, and Dave at AJPS for helping me with parts so far :)

nice progress man, another 25 up in this bitch.. i vote for keeping it bamboo

with your 86 strut conversion what lca/ball joint you going to run?? ( im having this dillema now) cause the std one is way to small for the 86 steering arms and the hole in the lca is too small for a ke/ae ball joint..

you dont have a spare front drivers side guard do you??

Tally I would paint it white and run flares with some decent offset wheels, white easy to paint and body isnt as critical and that bamboo colour IMHO is horrid. Decent offset wheels and flares give the rolla a menacing stance.

Go a high apacity for added visual impact

Tally if your interested my brother will be selling his 20v drivetrain out of his

IP car package to suit a ke20-25. It consists of 4age20v S/T dynoed at 110kw, comes with trumpets ,trd copy extractors, extreme lightened flywhee land clutch. T50 gearbox. K series lsd with disc brake conversion. Its all bolt in mate and will make your car a very quick little streeter. Similar
performance to a ss commodore in a straightline. PM me if your interested.

yea pretty keen on keeping it the same colour.
Don't want fancy candy gay colours they been painting all the old school rotaz that been coming out of Sydney lately. Keeping it a solid colour...

Basically im using standard LCA for now, might go longer later on, standard balljoint but im using taper adapters that I got from Techno Toy Tuning (T3) in California USA.

charged, not going flares, they look good but not my style, I like the smooth body lines it has...
That engine package is wild, will keep it in mind, need to get the body work out of the way first.

Would love a 2TG but they are getting old, parts arnt as easy to find and night as well just go 4age as its basically an upgrade...

see what happens, thanks for the kind words

Toyota # No.

Tally
27th February 2010, 12:13 PM
Yea they are genuine Toyota TE27, TA22 type etc .
Were brand new in box when I got em. Had from eBay, from Malaysia.

ok so got the front guards and apron 90% finished off, just need some small skims of filler and should be ready for primer.

LH passenger door is very rusty underneath, right side is mint, need to get a new door and work something out.

Today I got the front guards and bonnet repaired. Cut out rust and replaced with new metal. Body filled them lightly, sanded them and got them in a couple coats of hifill and guidecoat.

no pictures tonight but will get some tomorrow (monday)

Ive ditched the mustard colour and am thinking white or orange, leaning towards white...

It will probably end up being impractical here in the Arctic but damn they're cool!!!

now just got doors left to do. will get right one done but waiting on a rust-free passenger side one as mine has rust all underneath it :S

you #E7 owners are lucky the rust hasn't kicked in hard on your cars yet haha

Tally
15th March 2010, 03:13 PM
ok so picked up a new passenger door yesterday. 99% rust free so pretty happy about that.
Thing is its a KE20 door and as everyone knows KE20 window frame is higher by 2cm.
So we going to unpick it and swap my KE25 one over into it. Way easier then cutting out rust sections and fixing me KE25 door, pics in due time and you'll understand LOL

Colour has been chosen = White, but I'm still yet to decide what type of white, I do want to stick to a Toyota white though so if anyone has some colour codes with pics please post :)

Tally
17th March 2010, 12:14 AM
Ok so today's effort.

Got home from tafe around quarter to 4 and went straight into the shed and didn't get out till 10 lol

Picked up a door of sleish on Sunday, had minimal rust but it did have shit loads of dents, but id prefer dents over rust any day.

So as it was a KE20 door the window frame was too tall so unpicked it and welded in my KE25 one.

here is the results of tonight's efforts, haven't lined it up 100% yet but all seems to be spot on so I'm real happy.

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4071/4437467831_39b3a49bfa.jpg http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2422/4438244726_05559e431f.jpg

also ive got these rims for it, they are 13" and 4X110 Formula 1 JDM wheels, very lightweight, similar to Watanabe or Superlight style.
I wont be needing them as I am going 4X114.3 so if anyone is interested drop me an offer.

21st March 2010, 01:49 AM
sweet KE25 :) would look nice in a slightly off-white. even a pale cream sorta colour would go nice. really bright colours don't suit older cars in my opinion.

what are the specs on those wheels? if you still have them in a few months, i may be keen to take them off your hands. 110PCD is a prick to find :(

Tally
22nd March 2010, 10:57 PM
thanks man, well the thing is the wheels are in 3 different offsets, 2X 6.5" 1X 6" and 1X 7", so just need to find one 6" or 7" and you have two matching pairs :S

paint stripped the door and started metal finishing it tonight, shouldn't take to long to repair and get it in hifill.

Then ready to block the car down, cant wait.

Was also thinking today about when I get to the mechanical side of things.
Im just gonna keep the 4K stock but with a nice exhaust system while I gather parts for an engine conversion later on.

Tally
24th March 2010, 01:05 AM
ok so today did a lot of work.

Finished off repairing the passenger door and got it in primer/hi-fill.

And started blocking down the car getting it nice and smooth. This is the time where I can get the shape and lines of the car perfect and fix any places ive missed etc etc so ill be spending a bit of time getting it right.

Aim now is to have it ready for paint next Friday, see what happens. Thinking White with Red interior Frank KE10 styles :P

Hey guys

Well I'm currently 60% through blocking the engine bay down. Firewall was a real headache haha but I got through it.

I'm going to get some automotive sealer to seal up all the gaps in the engine bay, been a bit paranoid and don't want the engine bay to look tacky.

So I'm going to track down some of this Sikaflex automotive sealer and seal up all the gaps in the engine bay so no water can get in and no rust can form :)

or if anyone can recommend another product that would be good :)

yep thats me in the engine bay :P

Yer. Sikaflex is the bomb.

Once you lay the bead, get a heap of saliva on your finger! then you can smooth it off without it sticking like shit to a blanket to your finger :)

Tally
27th March 2010, 12:34 PM
Thanks man for the tip! I ended up getting Sikaflex 252 instead of the automotive 227 one. Its more heat resistant so better for engine bays.

Dad got the bonnet, roof, boot lid and drivers rear quarter rubbed down last night, few low spots but we will touch em up so should be sweeeeeetttt. Cant wait.

Ok so got back from Melbourne and got stuck back into blocking the car.

Finished off engine bay, r/h door frame and 1/4 window, rear beaver panel and front and rear windscreen frames.

So this is how its sitting at the moment. Going to take my time going over it very carefully to find any imperfections.

Should be sweet. Colour im going is white, with red interior later on.

want to swap shells??or at least fix mine. haha

just a heads up if you do go a 4age is the little bump on the firewall for the fan will need to be notched about 20mm or so back, cause my friggin drag link hits the gearbox on full lock and the sensors on the head are about 15mm off the wall..

other than that those wheel are noice.. 13x7 should be a perfect size too, wont need bolt ons...

Pulled the engine out from the side of the house, 4K from a '83 KE70 Corolla.

Going to clean it up a bit, seems to be in good condition. Going for clean look, nothing shiney just going to do some wrinkle-coat on the rocker cover for some coolness.

Plans are:

3K water-pump - So my factory heater hose can fit. Will I have any issues as I think the internal water-pump fan is smaller then a 4K one.
3K thermostat housing
New fuel pump
5K electronic dizzy with Bosch GT40 - Thanks to Ryan SLO-030, shouldn't be hard to connect up
Basic service
New clutch with machined flywheel
Try find some extractors - Have access to a 2.5" under diff stainless exhaust to suit an E7# but wondering if I could adapt it to fit
Stock carbie - Emissions all ripped off and blocked.

I'm contemplating later on to either turbo it for a bit of boost, or try and make it a revy little thing... should save for engine conversion though LOL

26th April 2010, 09:25 PM
and we have paint!!! well in the engine bay, but its a start!

Colour is 1971 Mazda 1300 Swan White, has a slight blue tinge in it, looks nice az.

Only layed two coats on to start with, going to lay a third thick, glossy coat 2moro for that extra shine.

If everything goes to plan whole car should be done by end of the week.

now I need some cir-clips for my ball joints before I bolt my front end in soon, anyone know where to get them?

Cheers

exciting stage to be at with any car!

re the wheels. 13s for sure! there are plenty of really nice tires in 13" as its what a lot of clubman (lotus 7 replica) dudes use.

i would personally be going 165 55 nankangs though.. mostly for looks but thats probably still enough grip for such a light car.

another vote for the AP's dude, they are so perfect for this car. and has been said so many good options for tyres in 13. people just dont hear of them much.
otherwise, looking really good so far. it must be a good feeling to get it painted and looking mint.

Hey guys thanks for the advice, appreciate it.

Now I been putting in a few hours every night getting the front end together.

First off I got all my nuts and bolts aswell as bonnet and boot latch acid dipped and electroplated a silver passivate. Came up brand new!

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3265/4598771612_23cab91dde.jpg

Then got stuck into putting it back together.
So far installed engine crossmember, radius/castor rod brackets, sway bar, LCA's, AE86 PS arms and steering stuff, idler arm, tie rods etc.

Still got to grease and tourqe it all. All new utherane bushes throughout.

It's a good feeling :)

2moro install ae86 struts and get it rolling.

Tally
13th May 2010, 12:18 AM
Thanks mate, well the time to do one is now! only going to get more rustier and harder to find :P

Ok so got my AE86 struts in, bolted in no probs with KE25 strut top hats and with a 1mm adapter in the balljoint hole of the PS steering knuckles.

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4027/4601356964_2c580566cb.jpg

torqued my balljoint to steering knuckle to 50 ib, LCA to crossmember 60 ib, and steering knuckle to strut 50 ib, sound about right? That's what the book says so I guess so lol

I don't need to use Locktite or anything do I?

Went down to u pull it the other day and picked up a pair of 14" ra40/60 Celica stockies, tires are way too big at 195/70/R14, they are worn out anyway so thinking some 185/60/R14 tires.

http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1295/4600730161_c684ab5628.jpg

So yea basically just waiting on some bushes for my castor/radius rods and sway bar.

Progress is going good so should be done in no time...

Dad wants to rebuild my 4K and port and polish it as he used to do it on all his VW's back in the day lol.
Told him not to worry about a full engine rebuild but yea maybe some head work. Should be sweet.

ripped all the emissions and useless junk of it.
Need to replace front and rear main oil seals, new 3K water pump and thermostat housing.

Also need a lower thermostat housing, the part the thermostat sits in and bolts to the head, if anyone in Adelaide has one in good condition off a KE70 or earlier Corolla please let me know, need one asap.

Also changed front and rear main oil seals on the 4K last night.

Need to get flywheel faced, anyone recommend a good place that will do a good job? has surface rust and grease so maybe acid dip?

Cheers

Update.

Got some JDM calipers and vented rotors for this from Touge Boy.

Should be more then enough to stop the car well.

Cleaned up my K50 gearbox today, came up nice and clean.

Hopefully get roof lining sorted this week, really only thing holding me back.
Got number to an auto trimmer so see what he can do for me...

it's a 3K-R (not the official name, but i can't remember the code off the top of my head)

in a nutshell, it's a worked 3K bottom end bored out to 1300cc with a 16 valve twincam head, slide throttles, mechanical fuel injection, dry sumped, etc.

Pick up clutch kit Thursday.

So need to get:

Ok just to prove this project hasn't gone under ive got the front and rear windscreens in (although rear isn't in in the pic).

Have started work on the engine. New water-pump and thermostat housing fitted.

Now ive started work on the battery relocation to the rear. Ive got 4 meters of 2 B&S 32mm 255amp cable.

Thing is though not sure what I'm going to do with some of these wires hanging off the side of the cable.
Was thinking of some sort of terminal block or junction box to just save me the hassle and merge the existing cables together instead of removing old positive cable...

And also as the engine is from a KE70 the Bosch alternator has an internal regulator instead of an external one that the car had originally... so not sure what to do with that.

Thanks guys...

ran into couple problems yesterday...

on the rear of the head on the engine there is a plate held by 4 bolts, its just to block up a hole that is is used for 4k engines in other vehicles other then corollas...

anyways it was leaking so had to change the gasket, anyway snapped one of the bolts and there was no way to get it out there is like 5cm between head and firewall..

so off came the head, figured id get it reconditioned while it was off, turns out the head was in very good condition and the engine looks pretty good so im happy...

dropped the head off at Just Heads on port rd, they going to weld up the rear of the head so wont need a plate and wont have any leaks anymore, and also full head recon...

so yea...

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4146/5082212073_83bd2632c8.jpg

also had a couple of issues with the stock tie rod tubes, ended up using KE30 inner tie rods with the ke30 tie rod tubes, problem is they are very close to the pitman and idler arm...
Was missing one reverse thread bolt thats why couldn't use stock tie rods, and no one can seem to get a reverse thread bolt in 14X1.5 pitch -__-

Ok guys

so got head back from just heads they did an awesome job really happy with what they did for me...

no pics just imagine a mint cylinder head lol...

ok so installed it tonight.

cleaned up block surface best i could with some petrol and also cleaned top of pistons came up shiny like new :)

Then proceeded to put new gasket on and fit cylinder head.

cleaned up head bolts with a wire wheel, coated the threads lightly with oil and inserted them in order.

Torque them in sequence, first to 25, then to 50 then to 65.

Thing is only a couple would click when I got to 65, some of the were either too hard for me to do or felt as if they were spinning just so very slightly... hmmmmm

Chucked pushrods in and rocker gear, ended up threading a bolt and screwing up the thread in the head for the bolt, is for the rocker pedastal, second bolt on the right...

Will need to get a new bolt see if it will fix it, if not will have to fix thread in the head...

the joys of working on cars -__-

Couple of pics from today, will post some front end pics when I have painted up all the garnishes and grill...

car is running good, been driving it, engine conversion still up in the air, its a daily so prob best keep it a k series...
and after seeing Todd's plans for his Ke20 engine, got me watching k series racers on youtube like the old KP47 and KP61 starlets

ahh thanks guys!

well after I chucked the 32/36 weber on I had to come up with my own throttle cable linkage by adapting a KE70 throttle wheel to the weber.
Turned out it wasn't allowing enough turn to open up the carb full so I had been driving with one throttle barrel for a week or two, I was full aware of this just didn't bother fixing it lol
So after I got fed up with the massive restriction it was causing and the power I was losing, went and seen a Ryan (SLO-030) and he helped me adapt a ford throttle wheel onto the weber.

And now it goes like a rocket :P

Ok so got some extractors off scott pmp020

The are off a ke30 but shouldn't have any clearance issues.

Looking pretty sad at the moment but will wire wheel, rust convert and paint them with high temp paint, should come out good.

Might get some heat wrap aswell, see how I go.

With a new 2" system, should make car louder so I think its going faster lmao!

need to track down some carbs, either webers or solex's off a 2TG whatever I can find at a decent price

grab a linkage kit, filters and extractors and will be set to bolt on and run.

was either build a K or go 4age but I will muck around with the 4K for now, if I can find a 5K ill swap over, but for now the 4K is in great condition

ok so I bought this parts car this week :sunnies:

time to rock and roll...

engine, gearbox and diff all out now, as can be seen I unbolted everything and lifted the car off the drivetrain.

car is going to scrap lol totally stuffed rust everywhere...

looks to be a late model 2TG engine, not sure what its out of, but the gearbox seems like original ta22 5speed

also got the diff with it, any good? t-series...

ok so the planning begins

im keen to upgrade my existing ta22 T50 to a A-series T50, as I prefer the further back shifter position, and apparently later T50's are better because the bearings are bigger roller ones and not the plain type.
But apparently that's where the problem lies with fitment of t-series bellhousing onto a a-series T50 according to this thread: T-50 22spline in 2T (http://www.toymods.org.au/forums/showthread.php?34167-T-50-22spline-in-2T)

I have already cut out my trans tunnel to fit my KE70 K50 so ive already passed that hurdle.

now also im wondering about a late model T-18 T50 as they have a 3TC so should bolt up to my 2TG, apparently they are 22 spline so the shifter should be the later further back type...

and early T-18 have 20 spline output shaft (I think) but is the shifter still further back or up front ta22 style?

can anyone help?

EDIT: found this thread, T-18/TE72 gearbox with what looks to be rear shifter position! WIN! T18 TE72 T50 5 speed (http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/showthread.php/23503-T18-TE72-T50-5-speed)

EDIT: EDIT: Got to love answering your own questions -__- T18 & AE71 gearbox differences? (http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/showthread.php/16109-T18-amp-AE71-gearbox-differences)

ok im at a crossroads. Ive just bought a 2TG package and im all set ready to go... but....

Ive found a 4age...

now I know it looks like I cant make up my mind but I need some opinions on which way I should head.

Basically its a street car, set up for fun times in hills and track... Will be a daily until buy a proper daily...

now the question I ask, either stick with the 2TG for period correctness or go 4AGE and take advantage of huge aftermarket support, good prices and all the 4age stuff...

ive been eying out yahoo japan and still 2TG stuff available but the 2TG is huge compared to a 4AGE and only 8v compared to 16v.

hmmmmm......

I think your right dave, what it comes down to is spend money one way or the other, which ever one gives me the best bang for buck wins its spot in the engine bay lol

spiderman
16th March 2011, 01:36 AM
4AGE would win in the bang for buck category I imagine. Like you said, there's massive parts availability for the 4A, whereas with the 2TG you'd have to look a bit harder.
That said, 2TG's are awesome. I'd run one over a 4A in something like this anyday. It suits the old-school nature of the car, whereas to me a 4AGE swap falls under the whole retrotech thing, which I'm not really a fan of.

Fusion
16th March 2011, 10:27 AM
Well you mentioned it was a street car.

Depends if you therefore want it legal, well as much as possible. If that was the case I can only guess an EFI 4AGE would be easier to get through than a carby 2TG in regards to emmisions.

well after thinking about it I have decided to go 4AGE

so the 2TG is up for sale

Its a 2T-GEU Engine with Celica TA22 T50 Gearbox.
Comes with all accessories including twin solex carbs, stock twin carb inlet manifold, genie extractors, ta22 crossmember, radiator, leads, engine mounts and few other bits.

Was running great before being pulled out of a TA22 Celica.

Bolts in TA22, T-18 and also KE25 with modified or TE27 crossmember.
Also will bolt in KE70 with T-18 crossmember

They make the same if not more hp then a stock 16V 4AGE and heaps of potential for more power

$1500

and bought another ke25  hahaha

just for daily duties, sick of the hiace, stock 1.2 3K toyoglide FTW! to low so will remove lowering blocks and chuck in my stock front springs. looking for some 12" stockies

and guess what came with the Ke25.... modified t-series engine mounts to suit k-series crossmember -__-

also got a crane cam fireball xr700 ignition thingy, thinking of chucking my elec dizzy into the 3K and hooking this up somehow?

Been focusing on the daily, ripped the hotwires off and got some stockies off Frank, and got Karl at Custom Whitewalls to chuck on some whitewalls. Top Bloke!
Still undecided on what Colour to paint it. Will be an original colour though, thinking TE27 green or orange.... hmmm

I got a set of extractors with the new KE25 so I chucked them on tonight, finally a set that fit!
They are pacemaker so that's good with plenty clearance from strut tower as seen.
Keen on getting a Redline manifold and chucking on some twin mikuni solex's on!

Need some advice guys

which direction should I go, 16v or 20v 4age?

I know the basic differences of each of the 4ages but just don't know which route to head first.

Mainly just want to know if I should stick a 16v in it or go the extra mile and just go 20v as that is what everyone upgrades to...

Also would like to know from people with 4age KE2# backgrounds in regards to fitting etc etc

I have read a few threads on here and on the internet and it looks pretty straight forward, already got my custom engine mounts which use ae86 rubber mounts but seen others use rx7 s2 mounts and others to lower the engine so might do some experimenting...

I can get a 16v relatively cheap or a complete blacktop 20v for just over a grand, I guess its a matter of cost but either way it will cost money so not fussed really...

here are some pics of 4age's in ke2#'s: (note some not 4age's but still worthy to be shown)
