So at the start of the year, I took delivery of this little beast for a meagre sum as a project to keep me occupied in my free time while I'm not at uni or working on assignments, or just generally bludging. The basic rundown is that it's an Australian L80 Handivan, which is essentially the same as the Japanese L70V with the exception of being powered by an 850cc motor instead of a 550cc turbo motor. There are a few other subtle differences, but for the most part, they're the same car. :P

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/3/6/8/5/38318.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v511/ill-minded/Cars/Mira/?action=view&current=IMG_1804.jpg)

This particular vehicle was originally found as an old customer courtesy car for a car audio workshop in Moorooka, where I first saw it. At the time, I was as poor as most uni students are and let it slide, but told John (xsoarerx) about it, who later bought it and stashed it under his house for some months. Late last year, he offered it back to me, so I found a bit of spare change and it became mine :)

Upon getting it back to my residence, I checked over most of the car to suss out what would be needing repairs or replacement. I already knew the motor was pretty much cactus, but went about listing the other bits that needed attention. Main issues are:
- Dead motor
- Rust in roof/windscreen surround
- Crack in windscreen
- Busted tail light
- Steering column surround busted
- Mismatched/worn tyres
- Drivers door sagging

So, the process of stripping it out to begin repairs began...

Some of the bad patches of rust

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/3/6/8/5/38322.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v511/ill-minded/Cars/Mira/?action=view&current=IMG_1807.jpg)
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/3/6/8/5/38323.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v511/ill-minded/Cars/Mira/?action=view&current=IMG_1809.jpg)

And that's about as far as i've gotten over the past couple of weeks. Currently waiting to pull the motor and gearbox out, remove the windscreen and get the rust tended to.

Initial plans are to just get it running and registered, then lower it, find some wheels (110PCD :() and maybe look at a cheap respray. Funtimes!

so i uhh... accidentally

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/3/6/8/5/38491.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v511/ill-minded/Cars/Mira/?action=view&current=IMG_1839.jpg)

... the whole windscreen :\

was poking around trying to get rust converter onto the areas around the windscreen and sorta worked out how to pop out the windscreen without it blowing up into 7 million shards in my face. half an hour later and it popped out quite easily and so i was like :)

... then i saw the extent of the cancer and was like :(

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/3/6/8/5/38492.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v511/ill-minded/Cars/Mira/?action=view&current=IMG_1840.jpg)

the top of the passenger side will definitely need welding, and the other bits around the bottom will probably end up getting similar treatment, but could probably do without. i'd rather not have to pull out the windscreen later to fix it, so i'll try and get it done properly too.

finished pulling out the dash today to remove the sound deadener against the firewall and clean out the 24 years of shit accumulated. fairly sure the windscreen has been smashed in this car at some other point in its life, as i found a few little chunks up behind the dash.

Been doing a bit of research around on motors and by the looks of it, I should be able to stick a 12 valve head from an L200 onto this without any dramas, which is pleasing, cause the standard 6 valve jobbie is pretty meh. still yet to decide exactly what i want to do with the motor, but running some bike carbs and fabbing an exhaust for it seems to be winning at the moment. should have a bit more poke than the standard motor and probably sound a whole heap nicer as well :D in other news, i'm waiting on delivery of a block and tackle to remove the motor, where i'll pull the head off and gauge how rooted it is exactly.

also pulled the window and winder mechanism out of the driver's door to check if i can replace the winder mechanisms with L200 items cause the splines on the winders have been stripped off from the numerous drivers/owners beforehand. L200 seems like it'll fit, so i'll add that to the list of things to grab next time i visit the wreckers.

if i have my way, bike carbs will be done ;)

spent the past 3 or so hours pulling the motor out :)

heavy little bastard to lift, even with the block and tackle. all went fairly painlessly (other than the rope raping my hands). forgot about the gearbox oil though, and it poured out through the driveshaft holes :right:

anyway, pics

so i was looking around for a piece of steel plate to pull off the crank pulley, and our neighbour came over and offered the use of a crank pulley puller thing. turns out they're old mechanics and they have a whole shed full of tools which they said i was more than welcome to use. the also have a welder, which will prove handy later down the track when i go to fix the rust :D

so, crank pulley is off and i'll look into pulling the head off tomorrow. win!

started pulling down the motor and doing a bit of planning for what will go back in judging on how the current motor is. Other than the motor leaking like a sieve, i haven't found too many issues with the bottom end, so i'll be reusing it, but doing a few little things along the way that should give it a bit more poke ;) current plan looks a bit like this:

- get machining done on block/head, block bored to 68mm, balance rotating assembly
- 12 valve head off an L200 mira (EF-EL) - clean up ports and combustion chambers
- L200 pistons (std 68mm bore - ED10 is 66.6mm bore)
- new bearings, water pump, timing belt
- triple carbs
- exhaust (probably not as wild as the above pictured one)

so the end result should be a hybrid 882cc motor in a <600kg chassis. if it gets anywhere above 50hp at the wheels i'll be happy :P

and some pics of the engine tear down

not at the moment :( funds are a bit tight, so it's pretty much sitting in the carport. it's a long term project, so may not get anywhere until a bit later in the year. i'll probably try and get the rust fixed up in the next month or so so i can at least get a windscreen back in and not have it leak everywhere haha

so marv dropped round today with some presents for me :D

before that though, i decided to pull out the bump stops and springs to see just how low i can go... which led to this

and with the new steelies
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/3/6/8/5/42112.jpg (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v511/ill-minded/Cars/Mira/IMG_1918.jpg)

i'll measure the offset properly at some point, but they're 13x5.5J steelies off an RX-_ or something and should fit pretty mint with a little guard rolling and some camber on the front. only issue is that the centre bore is smaller than the locating ring on the hubs, so they don't sit on the hub face. i'll take them in to a wheel place and get the centre bores machined out to suit though. the fronts should sit another 1/2" in the guards and the rears about 1/4" once i get that done.

rear camber at the ride height i want to run it will be pretty much spot on without having to slot holes, and there is substantially more guard space than marv's L200 (as seen by the pics) i'll get some better pics from the rear once my housemate takes the starlet out and i borrow some of marv's old struts (without springs)

so, now i'm keen again to get to work on this and get it closer to running :D

oh nose, your engine only has 3 pistons!!!

btw think maybe you made an error with the exhaust manifold design.... unless it has twin exhaust ports ?

ill-minded
18th April 2010, 07:35 PM
ja, the ports on the 12 valve heads aren't merged, so there's a port for each exhaust valve :P the spark plug sits in between the ports, which is why they're like that. i doubt very much i could be bothered making a manifold like that though. it looks good as a concept though lol

thinking of buying an L200 motor/loom/ecu and transplanting that in to get this running and build up the other block on the side. funtimes!

went outside and did some work for the first time in a little while.

went and cleaned up a bit more of the rust and cut some of the thinner chunks out around the passenger side bit so i can get a welder in there at some point and put a bit of metal back in. will go buy some putty/bog and fill the smaller holes later this week if i get a chance.

also flared out the lip on the front guards a bit and took the strut out to see how it'd look with teh 13's on the front.

bit of a thread revival, but anyway, got out while the rain had settled today and did some more work on the shitbox :P

fixed up the bits of body filler i fucked up last time, so should be all good when i sand it back and prime it ready to paint. then while i was waiting for the filler to go off, i got a little bored and decided to take apart the engine bay further and chip off the old shitty looking seam sealant and give it a good sand in preparation for some paint. i'll probably wash it first to get most of the dirt, then give it another quick sand and spray away.

just spent a little more time out the front working and cursing that i used too much hardener in the body filler so it set on me after like 3 minutes. then cursing at the seemingly endless amount of sanding. then cursing at blinding myself while welding again.

cursing aside, it was fairly productive, and i'm just about ready to paint around the windscreen and go find a replacement to pop back in :) sanded back the lips on the front guards so i can put filler over those and get them looking schmick. started putting stuff back in the engine bay. fixed the drivers door sagging and not closing properly. decided that the seats looked cooler without the headrests. sat in the engine bay and pretended i was a motor then decided to call it a day.

pics!
all fixed!

so, things left to do

- finish body work (more body filler and sanding, then a fresh coat of paint)
- install windscreen
- rebuild motor
- purchase gearbox
- purchase battery
- rebuild brake master
- vacuum the sanding dust out of the interior
- reinstall interior
- get wheels machined
- buy tyres
- skids

Thanks man. At this rate, it looks like I'll just be rebuilding the motor as is to get it up and running, but I'd definitely like to do something down the track. Strut brace came straight out of Japan. Got it from Yahoo auctions earlier this year.

In other news... Action.

Went out this afternoon and picked up a box of Ironlak.

Yeah, I've heard reports of fading, but I'll be laying down two fairly thick coats, so it shouldn't do too bad. I'm gonna try and get a hold of some clear to go over it as well. I sprayed the beaver panel and the door jambs today and the colour is pretty bright. Came out well and looks pretty mint. I'll get pics once it's all painted up as it looks pretty ghetto in 3 different colours...

Nice. Keen to see pics of it when paint is done. Also are you going to pull/add guard flares to the rear to fit those wheels?

ill-minded
5th November 2010, 04:55 PM
The wheels fit pretty mint as is. The only thing I need to do is get the centre bores machined out, as they don't sit on the hub face. Once I do that, the front will sit in about 1/2" and the rears will sit in 1/4" or so. I'm gonna try and get a hold of some 145/65R13 to go on these wheels, so they should tuck in pretty mint. I'm thinking later on down the track I'll look for some wider wheels and cut the rear guards out and weld in some new metal flares.

The steelies on there at the moment fit pretty flush as they are. Or at least, they will be once I get the centre bores machined out. :)

I'm currently in the (tedious) process of scuffing all the faded plastic off the bumpers so they look a bit less shit than they currently do. Getting a quote on a full gasket set for the standard motor, and I'll take a trip out to the wrecker to see if I can procure a bunch of stuff from an L200. Plelz - 7 cans went into that. I bought 8 to give me room for error or in case I needed to respray a panel or just for general touch-ups. I only did a single, thick coat on the beaver panel and door jambs as they're not visible from the exterior anyway. I'd definitely do two coats if anyone else wanted to follow this, cause the colour comes out a lot more consistent after the second. For $56 though, I'd have to say it came out alright. :)

Wheels, tyres, suspension and resealing the sump are the main priorities at the moment. Work will begin on the weekend or early next week as I'm moving house over the next couple of days.

Had a tinker with the carb this afternoon and raised the idle a tad so the whole car wasn't shaking from the harmonic resonance. Also adjusted the accelerator pump so it doesn't bog down as much when you stab the throttle.

So this is how she sits at the moment. Lowered all round using a mix and match of springs and bits. Swapped the front bumper off the shell since it looks a bit nicer, and had the proper clear parkers. Air con gear all removed (a bit useless without the compressor) and all the better interior bits from the shell installed. Engine bay cleaned up and all the buggered vacuum hose replaced with fresh stuff. Rocker cover painted with wrinkle black for an extra 15HP.

Waiting on my neck to not be retarded so I can take the wheels down to get the centre bores machined out, then hopefully find some 145/65R13 to wrap them in and massage the rear guards. Following that, RWC and rego!

Following that, it'll get lowered a bit more, then removal of one of the mufflers and remaking the rear half of the exhaust. I'll buy a little trumpet to fix to the carb throat as well for funnies. Then a bit later on, when funds/time permit, perhaps I'll venture out and do a bit of this...

Nah, just running the standard ED-10 at the moment. The hybrid will come a little later if I can be buggered building it up and shelling out for all the machining and new seals, bearings, etc.

Last I checked, a full gasket set was about $250 and all the bearings were another $100 or so. Not sure how much new pistons are worth, but any Toyota dealer should be able to look up for you. You should be able to pick up spare motor bits from someone who has done a swap for a turbo motor, or someone who has replaced a motor. Also keep in mind that the hybrid motor is theoretical at this stage. I've never seen one done, but it all works in theory. i.e., the head will bolt up to the block and you can use the same timing belt, dizzy, etc. The compression ratio will be rather high too (13:1 or thereabouts from rough calculations), so take that into consideration.

I think it's about a 2-3" drop. The standard guard gap you can easily fist. It sits up a little higher cause of the 13's though, since Australia has a woeful selection of small diameter tyres. Standard tyres are 145/70R12 and these ones are 145/70R13, so it's effectively 1" bigger in rolling diameter and lifts the car 1/2" or so.

I've got some new wheels for this in Japan which will drop it back down and I might "reset" the springs a little later on to get it to a nice height.

31st August 2011, 11:33 PM
Yeah, I fixed that today. Basically, someone has snapped the stud at some point and replaced it with something similar, but not the same. The thread doesn't go right down to the base of the stud, so when I went to put the nut on initially, it would hit the end of the thread and bind before actually making contact with the wheel (albeit, just). I put a 3mm thick washer on it today and all is good. :)

A couple of weeks later...

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/3/6/8/5/226375.jpg

Just need to sort out making an intake manifold mainly, so I can dummy up the throttles and actually do the wiring properly. Then fuck around with the fuel system, since being originally carbureted means the hard fuel lines are tiny and there is no facility to install an in-tank pump, so I've got to mount an external pump and upgrade the lines to 8mm stuff throughout. Might go pull some lines out of an L200 and bastardise those to work. The fuel rail also needs modification as they run a return-less setup standard.

Thankfully though, the fuel system is most of the work left to do. The manifolds are pretty straightforward and the wiring is just tedious. Fun times ahead.

Really not that much to it in actuality. Bought some throttles, Removed the excess crap off them and modified them to suit the application. Manifold made to suit and a $300 Megasquirt to run it. Only other things are time and money for all the little odds and ends. Re-used a whole bunch of standard bits and pieces from the motor and throttles, which turned out to be pretty good for adapting. All in all, mostly just spending time buggering around making shit work with other bits.

Without the need to also convert a car from carb to EFI, this would've been bucketloads easier, as that's what gave me more issues than the ITB swap.

Vaughn: Thanks, man. It's pretty crazy on WOT. Surprisingly, it's still pretty easy to drive around even though the throttles are probably about 6mm bigger than necessary and only having half of the pedal travel due to the smaller pulley on the bike throttles compared to the original carb. This car has a leaking rear main seal. Out comes the gearbox again. =___=

I'll probably replace the clutch while it's out as I don't think drier roads are going to be quite as forgiving on it. Need to do some work fine tuning all the cranking and cold temp settings as it's a bit temperamental to start and runs super rich when it does start, haha. Does mad second gear skids in the wet though. Had a cop roll past from behind about 10 seconds after said accidental skid and didn't even bat an eyelid. I love this car.

Ok, so that video may be on hold for a few weeks. I'm thinking I might get the head rebuilt while all of this is out of the bay again, since the valve seals are a bit suspect and it's due for a timing belt in 10k anyway, so I'm erring towards just fixing it all for good and not having to bugger with it again. Bottom end is still alright though, so I'll just replace the crank seals and re-do the sump.

Yeah, I've got everything pretty much sorted and accounted for, so all is good. I've seen the shop before and had a browse. Thanks anyway though.

Hopefully I'll have the motor out and the head off by the end of tomorrow so I can take it in on Monday to get rebuilt and the flywheel machined and grab the seal for the gearbox at the same time. Clutch should be in early this coming week so with any luck it'll be all back together by the end of next week and I'll be ripping unintentional skids all over the place. Funtimes.

Everything is out and ready to go off to the shop. Pulled the gearbox apart after getting oil everywhere and got the input shaft seal out, so I can pick up a new one on the way back from the engine shop and put the box back together and tidy it up a little.

Rebuilt the front suspension with some newer, uprated struts. Had to do a little bit of work to get it all in, but it sits nicely and I've reclaimed a lot of suspension travel that I never had previously at this ride height. The improvement in ride quality is unbelievable compared to the old struts, and as a bonus, it uses OEM parts for that "but it's standard, officer" look. Heck, I didn't even have to cut the springs.

Not a whole lot to report. Been fiddling around with the Megasquirt and trying to sort out the cold start settings so it's not so much of a prick to start in the morning. Replaced the starter motor a few times as well, which I've got down to a 10 minute job.

Picked up a set of FL-IIs, which will get installed once I get the hubs machined so the tapered centrebores in the wheels fit over the hubs.

Not too sure, kinda ended up with it by accident. Already bought a set of 12X4.5J +45 Black racing rims to put on it to ditch the hideous steelies. Maybe Khaki / camo / army green paint. Definitely not going to be taking the car too seriously, maybe blackboard paint for the bonnet. Might daily it until the love comes back for my Subaru which is what's supposed to be my daily. Cool little cars, shame there isn't more of them around.

Aside from the definite lack of power (particularly with the 660cc EF) they're not bad little runabouts. You can fit a surprising amount of stuff in the back, so they're still pretty practical. Not too great if you spend a lot of time on the highway for fairly obvious reasons, but they can be good fun with a bit of extra motivation under the bonnet and a bit of time and money on the suspension. Incredibly cheap to fuel, which is a good bonus!

Watch for blowing smoke though. Valve stem seals like to die. If the car was maintained and serviced reasonably well, you shouldn't have any problems, but with cars that haven't seen regular servicing, they tend to build up carbon in the oil drains in the ring lands, which also pushes oil past the compression rings. Spark plugs are about $20 each because they use some obscure type. Cut springs in the front are shit. You can actually get a half decent lowered setup without spending huge dollars ($400?) and most other things are usually fine. Really easy cars to work on. You can have the engine out in about an hour, so engine out jobs like the timing belt/water pump are piss easy. :)

I can't find the photo I took of the comparison, but you should see the size of the valves in these. Hilariously small, haha. Having an EFI car makes doing conversions easier if you ever decide it's more fun than driving a Subaru around. ;)

Almost a year since the last update. Not a lot to update though. I went to start it a few weeks ago to find that the fuel pump was dead. All fair, considering it had the dregs of a tank of 3 year old fuel, which was probably closer in viscosity to syrup. As it turns out, the pump had simply (and thankfully) overloaded the fuse, so with a fresh 10A fuse pilfered from somewhere on the shed floor and some fresh fuel, the battery decided it didn't want to cooperate anymore. Fast forward a bit and it runs again, after a minute or two of cranking to get the bastard to start.
