Slowly putting the 70 back together, got the pedalbox in today. Might bolt the box on the motor tomorrow and slot it all back in, then its basically down to sorting out the fuel setup and wiring then it should be pretty close to going and chirping first. Mint.

Red panda (red/black) was a common factory option, and I like it.

But PLEASE!!!!! If you do go panda, please give the painter hundreds of photos of factory panda cars and be fussy where the colour change line is. When it's done wrong, it just looks so bad there are no words to describe it. Same goes for placement of the side strips, which also need painting for panda style.

update for me is nothing has been done on my car in ages!
But i did go to the tip today cos i was having a clean out, driving back from the tip face and i see this VERY good condition trolley jack just sitting there! Anyway i jump out and have a look at it and it pumps okay except when you put a bit of weight on it. The pumping system is bloody simple in these jacks so i figure well it's probably just low on oil or has a burst seal in it. One of the tip guys is there and i asked about it and he told me that the guy who dropped it off told him it was only like a month old and it wasn't working anymore. I ask who i have to pay to take it and he's just like "take it! I never saw you!" LEGEND
So anyway i get it home and start stripping it down and it turns out someone has had it apart and put one of the valves back in up side down!!! So like open when it's meant to be closed etc.
Anyway gave it a clean and put it back together and it works like new HAHAH So yeah a good 2000KG trolley jack for nothing :P

Update time...

Rear end redesign nearing completion, components off today to be sandblasted and powdercoated, ready for final assembly!

All i can say is that equal length 4-link = so smoothe! Just to jack up and watch the pinion angle stay as it should, definately worth the work.

I cant be bothered waiting around for the dollar to return to something worthwhile, so for the time being i have modded my original upper arms to use the standard items (although they are nolathane bushed) until the price of the rod ends required for the rose jointed arms comes down, which will enable me to have it tuned and most importantly, washed!, sometime in the coming couple of weeks!

thought you were after grip? not going to find more with rose joints... to solid prob find more by keeping the old bush type, or remove an upper trailing arm to let the diff move around more.. dodgy backyard grip styles yo :P

Perhaps if I was going to run 6kg springs and rose jointed rear end, yes it would be too solid. However, I am trialing a variety of spring rates that are softer than commonly used in the 86 community to find just what is going to offer the best performance for what i want to do. The idea of equal length arms and them being rose jointed is so that the diff has no resistance to moving up/down, rocking left/right. Same as not having any sway bar, I want my car to roll around over the diff, thus keeping power on the ground and obsorbing somewhat the lateral forces transfered when altering direction at speed away from wanting to force the car into a slide.

heard you where going IRS?

Was going to. Decided against it. Meh, V8 Supercars run live axle rear end still, must be alright to some extent im figuring!

ae71
18th January 2009, 03:16 PM
yeah well you would get more squat with IRS?

but you keep zero camber all the time which must be a plus with a billion hp

so the answer isnt in some wide grippy tyres? :P

ive driven with cutties, 8 & 6kg and 6 & 4.5kg.. for good all round street driving im quite happy with the 6 & 4.5kg. up until recently i was running 10ish and 4.5, looks gangsta as could have the guard sitting on the tyre (very very little compression) and may have been usable with some stiff shocks. going back to 6kg in the front feels really soft but it turns much better now. i had just adapted to the way it handled with the 10's but going back to 6's kinda realised how much understeer it had, esp mid corner. will slide with 205's on the back haha!

oh and 8 and 6 with kyb shocks and rear swaybar would power drift with a 4ac at like 40kays. so good for low powered skids but felt very unstable around highspeed corners and little to no grip. but the slides where quite controllable.

thats just what ive found, i think id like to try maybe 6.5 and 5kg

Nooooo...... Stock sprinter (lowered) rear end SUCKS for squat, simply because of the geometry. A quick explaination of attaining squat is that it is all to do with the angle of the upper arms and the length of them compared to the lower arms. For more squat under power, the upper arms need to be inclined (at the front), opposite for squat under brakes. Its a comprimise that can only be found through trial and error, to suit the driver's preferences and driving style.

And yes, some nice wide tyres will also be helping..... ;)

only time rose joints make it slippery and rubber or the missing upper arm give more traction when the geometry is all up to shit...

your using 16x8's from memory? well 225/40 semi slicks should give heaps of traction i would have though?

also v8 super cars are fairly low tech really. big chev motor up front, gear stick in the middle and a old lock diff at the back... they do wheel alignments with string. for Australias biggest race series kinda a bit ghetto and back water style. look at JGTC those are closer to F1 cars then our V8's.

dont they run a single panhard too not a watts linkage?

s14seriesII
20th January 2009, 06:12 PM
the v8 supercars run watts linkage they have a pretty damn good setup to copy as well with equal length parallel inline 4 link rear end..

and not too many chevs come with 8 throttle injection with carbon trumpets, dry sump, etc ;)

and isnt medwin looking for anti squat ?? not more squat ?? only downside to anti squat is loose roll steer

yes quite often do it actually as most wheel alignment machines wont work on cars with maasive neg camber

jgtc cars are a lot more developed than v8 supercars lest not forget that v8 supercars banned gtr's and what not because they couldnt beat them and im sure it would still be the case today

Thats what I'm saying, and one of the most effective and easiest ways of doing it with cars that have a track set up.

yes i think a mildly worked 4ag is ideal for sprinter/keto and i wouldnt haev it any other way... just saying i can see sense in it.

Pfffft, there will be maximum KE tappage between you, Daim and I.

Will start sorting it out a bit more tomorrow when I run the bigport mani down to dad. Will try and knock up a template for the plenium as well while I'm there, as much as I'd like to run jubride filters or the like, a simple plenium will be ideal for now.

Keen to have it turning over soon.

Anyway, sure to spike criticism of some sort (or at least lazy's "I told you so" speech regarding the coilovers.... ^_^ ) here's what else i've been working on... Spent a while on the lathe making steering wheel spacer, gear knob and coilover top hats/perches all from billet aluminium, and sleeves to convert struts to coilovers from steel (which was soda blasted to prevent rusting)

New front coilovers, AGX shocks (40mm shortened struts) with 7kg/mm springs. No, they dont have a second/lock nut. Have a grub screw (in rear of strut out of view) that locks the adjusting nut into position, unable to spin freely. Also need to repaint the under guard where I have folded the seam over to allow clearance of the new tyres a little better, will do when I have to do some more painting.

Update for me, attended the NWCC Smithton Kart Club Lap Dash on Saturday. Had a ball of a time, rogers the drive up would have been well worth it! All you sliders out there, make the effort next year - tight, flowing, narrow kart track perfect for honing skills i'd say.

After having a trip to emergency on friday night (angle grinders do not feel pain, they do however require no effort to remove the end of your thumb, the bone in mine is now 2mm shorter) I was going with only the intentions of circulating and seeing how the car was handling after a few minor tweaks during the week. Needless to say I was surprised to come in after the 1st round sitting in 3rd place overall, behind 2x Evos. The battle royal continued between the old man and I, with each run bettering the other's time. Took off in my 3rd session, managed to snap someone else's weld on my gear lever (originally thought it was my weld, but alas found that the stick had been welded further down by someone other than me, my join was still intact) and pulled up with the car in neutral. In my efforts to use the 15mm of lever to get the car into gear, managed to slice my other thumb, which too required stitches... Limped back to pits, medicos fixed my hand and I went out with the car stuck in second gear, recording faster times in both my 3rd and then 4th round attempts. Ended up 5th overall (out of 42) behind only 2x Evos, Chris Stringer in his MR2 and an RX7. Needless to say, very happy with my result considering I had no thumbs to use and only 2nd gear.

Again, Tim Auty, driving the wheels off his evo taking out overall honours, however Chris Stringer finishing only 1.5sec behind Tim over the 2 laps is an unreal effort for a non-4wd car. The closely contested Female class proved to be popular also, with a number of the ladies finishing well up the results, including a couple beating a burnie skyline driver (no names, no names!!!). A good mate of mine would have taken out the best presented had he have left the beaded seat covers on his Auto 200B, and also would have taken out the "Furthest Distance Travelled On 2 Wheels" award, had there have been one! :P

Anyway, a couple of pics and short vids the missus grabbed on my camera.

I do not beleive I infered that all you did was drift. I simply said that you would've had a ball of a time, given you know the track etc, whether you chose to drift it or go for speed, I cant think of anything that i've done that was more fun. Needless to say, the 86 loved it!

Medwin: keep us updated on future kart track stuff and hill climbs, sounds fun. I hear of this Tim Auty occationaly, never met him. It turns out we are related by about 5 marriages. He rallys a ST185, so a Toyota driver.

My update: spent another day assembling the 86. Inside is painted, so I put all the wiring harness back in. KE70 accelerator cable fitted.

Ha ha working on it.

Gotta modify or make a custom manifold for it. Last turbo was side mount and different flange, may just put a 90 degree bend on it put a t2 on it and be done with it.

Good to see another SPRINTER in Tassie. Very thin on the road at the moment.

My update: ECU is bolted into the car and 90% wired up. Body wiring modifyed for different alternator and relays etc. No ECU sponsor as yet so exact make and model is on a need-to-know basis only, but it should work and looks like a 80s race car. Now thinking about fitting a secret switch for extra boost.

Update

Got new rear door fitted tonight - cheers to dan86 for hooking my with 4 donor doors of his Ksev, these ones are in pretty mint condition.

Now waiting on some coin to be saved up and tax time, time to get a decent air compressor and associated tools to go with it, picked up a sweet gravity fed spray gun the other day, will use my old doors as test sprays till i seem to get it right, then have a crack at my car.

Also with tax $$$ will be purchasing CA18Det and associated bits and pieces, if anyone knows of one thats pretty stock, put em in contact with me.

Also, am after a few of the usual steering suspension bits for the 71:

LCA's - tell me what ya got
Struts - corona or AE86 - a brake upgrade from what ive good would be good, lol, dont need springs, ill get some new ones from King Springs to suit the struts
Ive already got an S13 crossmember, so dont need that

Cheers,
Prewer

cant say i know much along the lines of the s13 cross member conversion, but doesnt that mean ull need to run s13 suspension and ideally a s12 steering rack?

equal length trailing arm boxes arrived...pair of 195/50/15 toyo r1rs arrived...broadway mirror for the ksev arrived...

still waiting on a box full of shit from japan...

you run a full s13 crossmember prewer
when you buy your ca get a halfcut
then you bolt in the whole s13 crossmember etc
this gives you s13 brakes, s13 struts and you either redrill your strut tops to suit s13 or run ae86 ones on top of your s13 struts

Tassie's oldest, most thrashed and most unentertaining to watch KE70 may be back on the road soon. Not rolling with any trick or special parts. Just a basic Carb 4A-G setup. Should be able to link turn 1 and 2 at Symmons, and may even be slightly competitive in timed sprints.
