Tomorrow i'll be in the market for a fairly "top end" Laptop.

I've used Acer's forever. I am a fan of the Asus brand, but there are others out there like HP & Toshiba.

Looking for some feedback before I make the splash.

Cheers

toshiba and sony are the best quality IMHO

Asus is a great brand that has grown A LOT... i live in japan and the most popular is toshiba.

it different at different places tho. but EVERY person from china i know loves Asus. and in my time in korea, well, laptops samseung is used a lot, but i hardly consider it any good.

i wouldnt even use a Compaq for a paperweght.... u wouldnt believe the expeierience i have had witht hat idiot company.

story goes... TK buys new compaq, within 3 weeks it caught on fire due to their fauly. i send it back under warrenty and they tell me yes we understand u need laptop, back in 2 weeks max of 3.... fuckin 9 weeks later i get it back... some how they caused these problems...

different motherboard that cant run my HDD properly (either that or the fucked the cables too lol)
they managed to rip four keys out of my keyboard. (B, V, G, H)
my space bar was held in on 1 side
they cracked my screen.

fucking idiot mob if u ask me. shit customer service, as i would expect from an american owned company.
i taken the HDD out of the PC, and smashed it in the harvey norman carpark, everyone thought i smashed a brand new laptop for fun LMFAO. that was years ago when my life wasnt as dependant on a PC. nowdays i cant go without a PC, so my last 4 laptops have been top of the range toshibas, had no problems at all.

im a bit of a dell fan when it comes to laptops, their upper range, latitude, are pretty decent. and they look good too.

the latitude is like their business range. not cheap though.

also i hear dell are very good with aftermarket support, mate of mine deals with them alot (he is the IT bloke at a high school).

i have a dell from 2004 (top of the line back then) and it still goes strong, use it every day at uni, i just had to buy some new hinges for the screen.

depends how much you want to spend?

I have had a Dell Latitude D610 for about 4 years with no problems. It has the 9 pin serial port, so good for car tuning. I just upgraded to a Dell Latitude D630, for no real reason. Its newer/faster. Very affordable as a used item on ebay.

yep i have the D600. excelent lappy.

610 was just a slightly faster processor i think.

ive had 2 asus motherboards die in my pc, and a few of my mates have had them die too. so im skeptical of asus.

i would never touch a sony product.

my toshiba netbook has a 9 hour battery life, has all the plugs and pins, 3 usb plugs, sleep and charge and cost 300 dollars.

Buy what you want but I would not look at anything other than a toshiba, they always come with better graphics cards and sound cards and stuff.

All the brands are comparable on paper with regards to hard drive space and screen size and processor speed, but the toshibas always have better quality and more little nifty things that make them more of a joy to own.

agreed so much. each time i bought a new toshiba, the graphics cards and sound were SO much better than all my friends laptops.

i owned that shitty compaq, then a soni vaio, then 4 toshibas after that.

my current toshiba runs all games so smoothly as well as video and photo editing, and the sound is as good as i have ever heard on a laptop.

Thanks guys,

I went and did the Hardly Normal / WOW circuit today and Hardly's had 16% of all laptops.

Ended up coming home with a Toshiba 18.4" / i5 Core bohemoth for $1679!

I did want an i7, but only WOW had one and they weren't on special and were like $2650

appreciate all the comments (even though I ignored all the apple ones :P)

asus are the best brand...i work in electrical retail...

value, quality and aftermarket sales support asus is superior for sure...

recently i personally found a fault with quite a few toshibas in a particular range of laptops...not one or 2...basically the whole release...toshiba customer/retail support blatantly lied about the fault when questioned saying it must have been user/external software...spoke directly to a region officer and he confirmed my finding saying that it was currently being assessed to determine whether a driver upgrade/patch would fix it or whether a recall was needed...

hp customer support isnt much better...compaq are a cheap nasty budget spec end of the HP brand...

dell on the other hand have grown quite somewhat over the past few years...but having personal experience with one within the family id never bother...

sony are awesome quality...but also fetch a premium pricewise...

apple are quite ideal if u are computer savy...as a newb relearning the operating system isnt all that easy...generally people will know themselves when or if they need an apple...or they'll want one to be "cool" the new range of i core macbooks are questionable at best of time...having quite high processor operating temperatures and in many cases causing problems...

any other questions drop me a pm

well pretty much the same story, ive never had issues with my pc,
your fooling yourself if you think an apple is anything other than a personal computer.

they used to run in house components, but not its the same components as any other company, crammed into a smaller housing, with some
clear acrylic over the top, a heftier price tag, and a DIFFERENT os, not better, not worse, just different.

I just cant see any gains. My newest lap top cost 300, its a toshiba nb200, i use it for uni and random internetting around the house. Apple cant do that for me can they. They cant even do that for 1200 dollars.
My other lap top is almost 4 years old and has never faulted once. The one before that was about 3 years old and never faulted but was sadly stolen.

The difference between apple owners and "pc" owners, is apple owners parents buy their computers.

slide86

is apple owners parents buy their computers.

my bank statement tends to suggest otherwise

totally agreed with the price comments tho.

i bought an asus thingy of ebay bout 3 years ago, its been great and i still use it every now and then to watch movies and music thats still on it. was a great buy for $800, and its still fine, just the wear and tear on the power cord.

i can still use both platforms and i think they both have their benifits, at the moment tho, my apple gets my lovin.

I used apple for HD Audio recordings, and they are perfect, other guys tried PC for this and they just didnt cope.
everyone i know who has a pc has had issues, their prone to a tonn of virus's.

if its for word processing and internet, then PC's are ok but for creative stuff... photo editing, audio recording, graphic design etc. mac's win. its industry standard, no one uses PC's in that world.

and btw i brought my own mac...

Yes Ryan even I agree that apple computers are overly expensive but the operaing system IS that good that it's worth it unless osx could be ran on a custom built computer then there would be no need to pay the high price on macs.

nice buy,

apples freeze all the time they just dont show a blue screen.

After a number of years with my imac and my macbook the OS on either has never once frozen. I've had applications crash, but not very often. The OS freezing? Never.
Back in my windows OS days it was like a fortnightly occurrence.

driftke70
2nd June 2010, 08:19 PM
that just hints to you not being able to use it properly, never have programs or os crash on xp vista or 7.

you just jerk off to people paying out microsoft blue screening that you never look against apple stuff.
one quick search reveals they have a severe problem.
http://www.google.com.au/search?q=osx+freezing&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&client=firefox-a&rlz=1R1DVFC_en___AU359

windows record the data and publish it on their website, mac hide such information and sweep it under the rug.
Research "apple damage control"
apple pay people to scour forums and such and play down problems, make new sites to push sites mentioning problems with macs off the first page of google searches etc so they
cannot be found.

one of the better screen and keyboards,. keyboards on mcp dont have page up or down, dont have a del button, no insert button, no print screen button,
my net book has all these and does not even remotely feel cluttered.

the 15 inch models start at 1800 dollars.

here is a computer i deem as superior and would rather have, regardless of cost, for $770.
http://www.umart.com.au/newindex2.phtml?bid=6

mr awesome can barely spell, hence his ability to operate a computer is significantly lower.

Must have been downloading a lot of porn. I have run all of my computers without any anti virus software for over a year and I've been fine. The only time I've had a blue screen was when I dropped my old laptop while it was on. And yes I have used/owned Apple products so I'm not biased.

Cool, As I say - use what works for you. I used my many windows OS computers for a long time, knew exactly how to use them, and they didn't work for me anywhere near as well as my osx stuff does. I wouldn't expect everyone to be the same.

thats not the computer i posted, i posted a toshiba,

you saying what i said was biased and 1% fact, is not less than what you did. Except I dont want to jerk off the ceo of toshiba, and learn his life story.

your doing the same stuff you always do.
You try to post facts from a biased website or use statistics with a very limited field.
Get disproved on many accounts but just relate them to your personal experiences is a very irrelevant fashion.
Then try to play it off like you never cared to begin with and think people should do what they want.
If you believed that you wouldn't have made your parents buy them for themselves, try to convince your friends to buy macs etc.
Its all just hypocrisy, going on and on about how they are better in every way, then when disproved backing off and saying who cares
apples are for people who want simplicity and dont worry about those things.

The reason mac dont sell cheap computers is because they know that they will lose their image and people are stupid enough to buy into what ever they do. Look at the ipad, many people bought it without even using it first. people literally masturbated in their trench coats at the unvealing.

did you ever here when this was released?
http://www.tabletpc2.com/Review-HPTC1100.htm
no doubt you didnt,

tell me one thing thats better about the ipad without using the words intuitive, seamless or streamline.

The CEO of toshiba didn't pioneer the personal computer market and technology and software. The reason people are so interested in Jobs is because he's a founder and a genuine innovator. read his biography.

I actually don't care if you don't like apple. If you go back in this thread you were the first to launch an attack, I simply posted what I though was the best laptop brand, as per the thread title.

Looking back - this was your first post:
"nice buy,

apples freeze all the time they just dont show a blue screen."

and then you go on to write a string of stuff about how bad they are.

letsgohunting
3rd June 2010, 12:21 AM
And I never said the ipad was better than that hp thing. To look at it objectively, it's bigger, heavier (twice as much), thicker, runs windows on a small processor, and not even made anymore, which doesn't really bode well for actually buying one.

driftke70

the amount of people blabbering on about how good macs are without justification need to be balanced out.

that thing was made 7 years ago, so apple arnt always innovators in everything they do. Alot of stuff they do are rehashed ideas of what other have done with a bit more marketing hanging off the side.

toshiba made the first lap top, which have sold more than any of apples products, so thats innovation to a more successful extent than steve jobs efforts.

Toshiba didn't make the first laptop - as far as I can tell osbourne did, or possibly a whole other host of little companies now gone. Steve Jobs, Wozniak and the IBM guys are the absolute granddaddys of silicon valley - where the computer was born. I find it all interesting, not just Steve Jobs, however I do find him particularly interesting as a person. If you actually read about him you would probably understand why as well.
