View Full Version : My Type 3 Panel... By Request... ---Image Heavy!!----

As requested, here is a build thread of sorts for my Veedub.

Ive been a Dub nut since my first car, it was a 73 Type 3 Squareback... Polished engine bay, retrimmed interior, Wide Rims, Porsche hub Caps, and god i loved it. But selling it to go sideways in a range of cars, ive finally ended back where i began... A 1970 Type 3 Square converted to a Panel Van...

Ill start with photos as i bought it and how its progressed.... With some reasoning behind bits and pieces as i go...

This is the photo i got before buying it, Site unseen from Mt Gambier...

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/5/0/7/1/45486.jpg

Convinced, a day trip in August last year with a mate resulted in this...

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/5/0/7/1/45487.jpg

When i got it home...

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/5/0/7/1/45488.jpg

Yes... thats a spare motor...

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/5/0/7/1/45489.jpg

It required some assembly...

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/5/0/7/1/45490.jpg

http://www.brassmunkymedia.com.au/wp-content/gallery/the-docs-ride/img_8468.jpg

Running, and around the block it goes...

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/5/0/7/1/45492.jpg

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/5/0/7/1/45493.jpg

I originally planned to strip the bonnet back to bare metal for that "Rat" look.... and let it rust

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/5/0/7/1/45494.jpg

But i found Bog... and well... Bog doesnt rust... So it got left at that point, and it hasnt changed since really...

So with it all back together i ventured out to take some photos

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/5/0/7/1/45495.jpg

Got a sticker for the rear window, and my rear vanetians in...

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/5/0/7/1/45496.jpg

New seatbelts and interior almost complete...

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/5/0/7/1/45497.jpg

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/5/0/7/1/45498.jpg

Got some white walls, and got them isntalled...

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/5/0/7/1/45499.jpg

Got around to lowering it...

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/5/0/7/1/45500.jpg

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/5/0/7/1/45501.jpg

I decided white wheels wernt the look the car needed... So a visit to a mate, tyres demounted, home, paint rims (Very badly i might add!), back the next day resulted in this...

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/5/0/7/1/45502.jpg

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/5/0/7/1/45503.jpg

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/5/0/7/1/44635.jpg

This was all getting ready for Volksfest in November last year... I found a Roof Rack, and borrowed a Keg for the day and it looked like this...

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/5/0/7/1/45505.jpg

The number plates also made their first appearance on the day

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/5/0/7/1/45506.jpg

I love the Stinger Exhausts... So much, I've now got two of them!

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/5/0/7/1/45507.jpg

Custom Gear Shift Knob... Yes... It is a beer tap... And to make it even better... The Hieneken word lights up!

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/5/0/7/1/45508.jpg

After Volksfest the car became the land version of the Exxon Valdez... The tow truck driver didnt believe me that it would scrape... So there is now a nice 1.5 meter long gouge out of the ground at work...

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/5/0/7/1/45509.jpg

haemorging oil, i decided a transplant was needed.... So i bought this...

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/5/0/7/1/45510.jpg

Soon after...

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/5/0/7/1/45511.jpg

While i was doing the engine/gearbox changeover... I got myself some Eyelids, some new stickers and tinted some lights... With it all back together and working, I took it for a spin...

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/5/0/7/1/45512.jpg

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/5/0/7/1/45513.jpg

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/5/0/7/1/45514.jpg

Marking its territory...

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/5/0/7/1/45515.jpg

Took some snaps with a mate and his Square...

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/5/0/7/1/45516.jpg

Compared ride heights... I was sure he was as low as me...

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/5/0/7/1/45517.jpg

It remained unchanged until i started prepping it for the Day of the VW show in March... This is the result...

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/5/0/7/1/44639.jpg

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/5/0/7/1/45519.jpg

New glovebox lid...

I had a black bonnet on it early last month..

It lasted about a week, i hate it... too much black after the other bonnet, so its back to its former glory now...

Today im changing driveshafts/cv joints and Painting the everyday exhaust matt white...

I forgot to answer this one... I looked into widening the wheels, but to do it was going to cost me almost what i spent on the car, so decided against it. I also have the problem of, due to the rear suspension setup on these, i cant go all that wide anyway... I have some rubber coming for the rear, from the states, been waiting almost 4 months now, but when it gets here it will toughen up the rear a bit. If i could sell the rubber on the rear now, id replace with some 195 wide rubber happily :)

No fake Patina on this one ;) All natural rust... The black bonnet just seemed to dull the cars impact a bit, people who said it would improve it, changed their tune once it was on. As i said, im thinking about giving it a revamp next year, this time it will possibly go one Solid Colour... Probably a full Matt colour too...

Its allright, I got the email with your original Post ;) Everyone has their own definition, like most things in the car scene... I dont think of patina as fake until you use the paint to create the effect... I thought about it, but decided against it... For reference sake...

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/5/0/7/1/45768.jpg

By your definition... Fake ;)

But as i said, its a definition that differs from person to person, country to country, nothin wrong with it. If we all said/thought the same thing, life would be boring

Patina is literally "acquired change of a surface through age and exposure". It happens, its not made. I didn't really want to debate it but thats pretty well unarguable truth, and EDIT I am quite sorry for going down that path as I reiterate it is still a pretty cool car.

Cheers. As for parts, it depends what your after (And what shape the type 3 is, ie; early/late, Variant (Wagon)/Fastback (Coupe)/Notch (Sedan)... all two door though ;) ), fuel pumps etc are modified beetle ones these days, most engine/drivetrain stuff you can source with ease substituting beetle stuff in or repro beetle stuff. Panels etc can be a little harder, but they are around, chrome, your dreaming in most cases, some of it is really sought after now and can be impossible to get. Glass, can be difficult but not impossible. You can get repro "pan" sections (Effectively the chassis in a veedub), but none of this stuff is made in Oz, mostly Europe and the US, so it can be expensive. The Type 3's are also appreciating in value, the die hard guys (I think im starting to fall into that category) will pay good money for them now. its not impossible, but dont think your just going to ring the local wrecker and get it the next day basically... I drive mine everyday, and wouldnt have it any other way!

Heres another shot, cos i like whoring shots of my car, and you lot seem to like them!

Cheers lads!

I'm selling the rubber that's on it at the moment, going a lower profile all round, and something to match some 'special' rubber i've got coming.

Changed the drivers seat to a red one now, the black on that was in it was just too trashed to use anymore, might go back in for shows, its piss easy to change, no bolts!

Due to my trip to Japan for the Drift Matsuri in November i may miss the VOLKSFEST show at Pt Adelaide and that may put some of my plans on hold for the car, mainly cos some of them i can't run all the time, so there's no point doing them until the show. But then again... I might do them anyway cos they are epic idea's!

After the Japan trip the new motor and box will get built for the car, and a few more minor things will get done to get it ready for the Portland 1/8th mile Drags in February too

It is so good! Who needs hazards just open the doors and boot and it will be like "OH! I better get ready to stop as there is men at work and I may need to take this detour.
Not to mention the gearknob like WOW where the hell did you find a light up beer tap handle let alone a tap handle.

Thanks mate. Love the car, although im tempted to move it on and get a Kombi. Will see what happens. The door trims... just one of those things :) The gear shift knob... A lot of time scouring the net for exactly what i wanted. I found it, and when it was supposed to arrive at my place, i instead got a letter from Australia Post telling me original order had been siezed and destroyed :bones:, so i found a light up gear shift knob and got that instead :DD

As for what brings me here... I've always loved driving cars sideways, but not as much as i love aircooled volkswagens and photography! Plus... I love the old school sideways RWD cars, so this is just my way of getting my fix of old school RWD goodness!

Kombi's aren't too bad but I think yours is really unique as there's plenty of Kombi's around.

What was the original Shifter going to be that got siezed?

Why don't you setup the VW to get it sideways?

Really like the ratted look bonnet it looks much better than the nice black one.

The original Shifter... was a grenade looking thing... oh well!

The VW will go sideways, but its like drifting a porsche, its rear engined so the pendulum effect comes in to play VERY quickly. If my trip to the drift matsuri falls through, ill put a new motor in this, maybe a stroker of some sort.

And the bonnet, people seem to be split, some prefer the black, others prefer the rat, all i know is... Its my car, and its how i like it, dont like it, stiff shit! :D

So, Saturday on the way to work the engine decided to leave its contents on the road... So i walked to work to deal with it afterwards. 45 minutes for RAA to turn up and tell me what i allready knew, that it needed to be towed home, then another 1.5 hours for the truck... For a Suspected Cracked Crank Shaft! 8|:S:worried::unseen:

So the car is being pulled off the road to be rebuilt. The body is being split from the pan, any and all rust fixed, will get a new motor, new gearbox, re do the brakes, will surface in Feb (thats the plan anyway!) with a completely new look! Might put some carpet and stuff in it this time round, i have a concept of what i want the end product to be, now to make it happen...

I think im going down this route. No idea what wheels im going to put on it yet, but its going to be a pretty comprehensive build. You guys are the first to see my plans too!

Body off the Chassis, Fix all the rust, make it mint, relocate the fuel filler, fill all trim holes. Satin White paint, i have an idea what White i want to use, just need to see if its possible. Will get a new heart, rebuilt box, some new interior goodies. The door trims will stay, ill just tidy them up a bit, make the handles fit and look proper. Will probably loose the sun visor on the front, and the rear venetian, and I have a few other idea's up my sleeve too!

Thats the one... There are others here, for Beetles, Kombi's and Early Porsche's too http://www.busselecta.com/

I think im moving away from the Rat look so to speak. The car will basically be getting a full resto, so there will be no rust left to show off. The rat was fun, but now for something completely different.

Definitely the Porsche wheels 2n'd one down. Depending on the colour you're painting if you're going with a dark colour get the 70's version that were chrome. But if you're going red, orange, yellow, white or something lighter get the 80's version with black centres and silver lips.
Man those old Porsches were cool what ever happened to whale tails. Porsche's just aren't what they use to be.

Detailed Fuch's are nice, but they have been done to death! I want to do something slightly left field

Maybe something like this

Polished is something I'm a fan of too

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/5/0/7/1/50900.jpg

Not chrome though, never really been a fan of Chrome, the polished ones just seem to have more character to them.

These are cool as well

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/5/0/7/1/50901.jpg

Regardless, to run ANY of those wheels, i either need to change my Stud Pattern, or sort out adapters to do it. And that's the last problem I'll face!

As for the whale tail 80's Porsche's, we all wish they would bring them back! So much character, so much cool in one body style. My absolute favourite shape is this one though. And this car in particular is just epic awesome.

Wow that Porsche is amazing! See now thats the style I think of when I think porsche not these new ones with gay boxster lights.

Very nice clean Rx7 great shot too. Have you edited that photo to make the sun a lot brighter or is that just the camera lense.

I love that shape Porsche, i have a lot of respect for the new school ones, they are bullshit quick, but the old stuff just makes them look shit! The Weeks Supaloc 1976 (I think) 911 is an absolute pearler, ill take the silver one to drive during the week, and the Supaloc one for track and weekend work thanks!

That shot is the same shot, edited twice, and spliced together in Photoshop. I couldn't take a tripod with me on the plane on the flight over, so had to make do with backpacks and whatever i could put the camera on to do what i wanted. A telephoto is hard to balance on something to get a shot too...

So, I may know my VW's relatively well, enough to get me by, and for a while there, i was fairly clued up on Commonwhores, but wheels is something ive never really been clued up on at all, i know the VW runs 4x130 stud pattern, but what else does? Id love to put something different on it to what is normally done, any ideas?

So there a has been a MASSIVE change in plans this time last month. I was told of a deceased estate and proceeded to buy it. Motherload of Barn Finds in SA by a long shot i think.

This gentleman has been collecting parts since the 60's i think, and the cars have sat since about 1970, practically no rust whatsoever in any of them, so i give you, the new additions to my fleet, these shots don't include all the parts i got....

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/5/0/7/1/54697.jpg

My mate has claimed this one, no skin off my nose, he threw some money into the deal, so he can have it!

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/5/0/7/1/54698.jpg

This one has had a front cut at some point, apparently due to a truck failing to give way!

http://www.brassmunkymedia.com.au/wp-content/gallery/barn-find-59/img_4283.jpg

They are all now safely back at my place, was quite entertaining rolling through Adelaide with 4 cars and trailers, 3 bugs on trailers, and a trailer full of engines and transaxles and panels and stuff!

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/5/0/7/1/54700.jpg

My old plans were to turn the Wagon on the right of this pic into a daily to get me rolling again, but i just kept finding more and more rust, so cut my losses and im putting the driveline into the Panel now. the Panel isnt perfect, but it is allready slammed and cool!

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/5/0/7/1/54701.jpg

So now, onto the plans for the Beetles, the first one, will be mine, its got NO rust bar a 10cent piece size on the running board, and is a numbers matching 1959 car. So engine out, replacement in, might throw a small turbo onto it for some more poke and get it looking something like a combination of these!

What i dont need from the haul will be sold off to fund said beetle build, including the other 59 that had the front end damage....
