picked it up a coupla months ago for 700 big ones, has just been sitting getting infested with mice. finaly got a road worthy today

good
engine rebuild 40,000km ago
mongose alarm installed
central locking  (back doors dont work :gah:)
aftermarket cruze control :cool::cool:
4 new tires (not for long)
some random ass steering wheel
had to install new rack ends for road worthy so put ajaps lock spacer in at the same time

bad
obviously spent some time buy the coast, mostly just surface rust, 1 little hole around boot seal
smells like mice
a/c compressor sezed, almost stalled the engine when i bridged it out

everything else is as you would expect for a 20 odd year old car

plans
suspenton then mabe a bit of 22r lovin or save for new donk (1uz anyone????)
so far i have hds coil over kit with 8kg springs, ma61 camber plates, excel g mr2 fo front, and ae86 rear for the back, ajaps rca + rear adjustable spring seats and 6kg springs on the way (unsure how they will go with irs thoe) and some 15x8 +0 sport max wantaabee style rims

like i have read on this form many a times, learn to drive first then start to modofy so after i got the parts ill c where i think im at and go from there

welcome to the club, keen to see those wheels fitted. I'm noticing more of these on the road, generally driven by elderly asian gentlemen.

For the money you spend on sportmaxx, you could probably get something more decent.
15x8 +0 will not fill the guards.
Other than that, 700 is an amazing starting price! Good work.
Look at Konakid's corona wagon for inspiration, it is real O.G material.

and in the box is venetian blinds:sunnies: hahah i would get a pic but mum has taken the camera for something

But they are better than stockies, 800 is very decent with tires.
Keep us posted man :) Corona lovee.

yeah i wanna lower it a bit first so it aint so 4x4 spec and besides its got good tires on the stockies that need abuse hahahahah

macca1590
29th July 2010, 10:07 PM
nothing really to update except the clutch is starting to slip from only mild abuse, will a clutch kit for a 22r hilux fit or will i need a rt142 or ra65 kit? i assume same pressure plate but spline in clutch plate may be different for different gearbox input shafts if they are different?? also will hilux 2wd 22r extractors clear everything or again do i need rt142 or ra65?? anyone with some prior experience would be helpful

keiichi
29th July 2010, 10:42 PM
22r hilux one should fit if it has the w5x gearbox but you should be safe and get one specific.
22r hilux extractors hit the firewall im pretty sure eh, i think konakid on here learned that one and was trying to sell hilux extractors awhile ago.
standard clutch does die pretty easy eh, i killed my old one in a heartbeat. went to drop a skid and only smoke came from the box lol and i couldnt drive it.

macca1590
30th July 2010, 02:43 PM
i wish i remembered this before i posted but a mate has a 22r lux with the gearbox out in his back yard, anyway after some measuring the input shaft is 29 ish mm and has 21 points on the spline, which is pretty much what i found on google, except 1 1/8 inch input shaft, 1 1/8" =28.57mm, but the data plate under the bonnet reckons it has a G52 box??? mmmm i think ill just to with a corona or celica combo unless anyone knows different

keiichi
30th July 2010, 05:49 PM
yeh they are different... who knows maybe the clutch still fits but i dont know.
i can confirm after a bit of research that the 22r hilux does have a g series gearbox.

macca1590
30th July 2010, 07:29 PM
well, after much mucking around on the exedy site i found that rt142 has a 225mm plate 28.9mm spline and 21 tooth spline and there is 2 types of lux clutches 225mm x 29.8mm x 21 and then 236mm x 28.9 x 21 so that last one has the same spline but slightly larger plate, so weather it will bolt up to my flywheel or mabey you need a lux fly wheel but i think at this stage i will just get a rona one save the hastles

macca1590
31st July 2010, 07:52 PM
picked up ra65 struts with ventilated disks from wreckers today, mabey get me coil over converting on in the next coupla days and also sponsored buy my mates old lux a new a/c compressor, after a bit of dodgeyness and gehto retrofiting the once r12 corona is now 134a and nice a chilly:sunnies:

rotate them 120° and they'll adjust camber/castor simultaneously, instead of just castor ;) (this can be a good thing)

if you want just plain old camber, sell them to someone with an MA61, xZ1x soarer or MX73.

mmm headers can I ask where from and cost?

How hard was the install of the irs/camber adjusters? PM me if u want

thx

macca1590
27th October 2010, 09:26 PM
headers are 'maximum performance headers' from ebay for $160 posted, just search "22r" and you will come across them, i messaged a guy who was selling headers for heaps of different 22r engines and asked about corona and he said the bundera rj70 will fit corona, he said someone already done it. i have yet to install them but looking at it i reccon they will go in alright, just need o2 sensor bung welded in. also not trying to diss on the brand or anything but im no specialist and you get what you pay for, eg. not manderal bent, rough welding inside collectors, ect, from outside welds look great thoe, just my 2 cents.

irs camber adjusters isnt too bad if your half handy with welder/grinder/ general mechanical knowledge, would also be handy if you had a mate to help lower and raise the sub frame back into place too

edit: just checked ebay $180 posted now for the same ones :hehe:

alright so i tried to install my RCA's today, anyway once all bolted back together with RCA in place my steering arm was only like a fly shit off hitting on the rims very outer lip (8" wide and 0 offset i believe), and when i spun it was fine except for a very slight dint in it that would pull it up, i realize i could just use a small slip on wheel spacer but i would rather not, and i suppose power steering arms would be the best option but what cars can i get them from, i know rt142 or ra65 will work but anything else? also i could probably just shave a bit of the RCA's which might help a bit
also the grease nipple on the bottom of the lca rubs on the balancing weights which i can easy find a plug for

keiichi
11th November 2010, 08:10 AM
with the height of your car RCA's are pointless. what angle are the lower control arms and rod ends at without them? if they are drastically pointing up, like say 25degress, then yeh but otherwise maybe just sell them.

macca1590
11th November 2010, 10:49 AM
mmmm you may be on to something there haha

edit: yes on closer inspection i am only like 3 or so mm above horizontal at the ball joint end, I thought that how much lower from stock was the height of the RCA required or is it when the LCA is way above horizontal that it becomes a problem?

keiichi
11th November 2010, 06:54 PM
its when it is way above normal... or... just above normal too i suppose - it is to stop it from toe-ing out as you hit bumps, so i suppose you want it just below horizontal.

macca1590
4th January 2011, 02:22 PM
so i got bored at work before Christmas and made up a gauge panel to sit on my dash, temp, volts and oil pressure, i also fitted a oil pressure switch, temp switch and low coolant alarm and hooked all these up to a buzzer, so if it say gets hot or loses oil pressure or loses coolant a switch will open and it will de energize a relay and will bringing on the alarm and corresponding led, (only alarms on oil pressure when fuel pump is running) i also installed the switch on the side so that i can turn the alarm off if its going off falsely, the light on the side is to let me know that the alarm is bypassed ( ill upload a diagram if anyone is interested)

one thing that has been bothering me is my stupid steering rack making noises so i went to the wreckers and got the best of the st141 racks and installed it and its still as noisy as mine, so im wondering if they would be the same as ke70 racks?? probably not but i know ke70 racks are a bit easer to come buy, so if anyone has got one laying and wouldn't mind getting a few measurements that would be great, dont go to to much trouble thoe

macca1590
4th January 2011, 03:43 PM
like a knocking almost, there very very slight moment between pinion/rack and dose not change when i adjust the preload thingo, just gets harder to steer and there is some movement in the bushes in the end of the housing, also im 99.999999999999999% sure that it isnt anything else cause i have been under the car a million times with wheels and struts and control arms and everything else off and they all appear fine with no movement, i even checked to see if my shock was lose in the strut casing and it only noticeable at low ish speeds and there is bugger all that you feel through the steering wheel

8th January 2011, 08:44 PM
ive bend rack ends before check those as they are prety weak,
the noise your describing tho sound like what i had, i found the balljoint nut lose on the steering arm so maybe check for that?

macca1590
9th January 2011, 03:47 PM
ke70 rack is a fair big shorter as expected, but you just never know aey

pulled other rack apart today, the rack has movement parallel to the pinion at the input shaft end(dose not have a bush at this end), but when you adjust the thingo until there is no movement it is almost impossible to turn the input shaft and when you do its very notchy, as if the teeth are bottoming out, and when you pull the pinion out there is definitely some wear but i wouldn't have thought it be enough to make it this bad. and the noise it was making is the same as the one thats in the car now so they must just be plain old worn out........................

lucky i have a mate who has a old 22r from a hilux with a spun big end that i was able to steel a valve and valve guide out of...... just a tad dodgey haha

did this while installing new cam, also have changed timing chain, sprockets, guides, tensioner, water pump, timing cover, valve springs, wideband o2 sensor and just got extractors and full exhaust done the other day.

i had the head sitting on the block and while putting the rocker gear on and using the bolts to pull it into place the rocker mustn't have been sitting on the valve properly and bent it and i broke the guide tring to bash the valve out. lessons i wont soon forget.

also the other week installed ra40 LCA's which is same as xt130 im lead to believe, new bushes and ball joints, ra65 power steering arms and RCA's just need a proper alinement's and it shall be all sweet. but now my rims stick to far out of the stock grards, soo lucky i have some new ones on the way................ pics soon :hehe:

its made a reasonably noticeable difference, still wont pull the skin of a rice pudding but definitely more rev happy. i would have liked to get or have a go myself at porting the head but because i have tafe in 2 weeks in brizzy i thought i had better get it back together so i got something to drive, and hopefully go to archerfield while im down, so is there anything i should be doing/organizing/buying/registration now to save hassles?

2 little questions thoe

i installed a wideband o2 guage while i had it appart, what should i be looking for under load ect, just a rough guide

and it wont build pressure in the radiator, can drive for hours and it wont get hot but dosent appear to be leaking and dosent appear to be pushing it all out into the overflow bottle its just got no pressure, can take the cap off when its full hot......... gonna have to check all the hoses and stuff i had off tomora

temperature niggle sounds like a borked thermostat, pull it out and look at it and remember what it looks like, then put it in an old coffee jar or something and fill it up wiht boiling water, if it doesn't "move" then get a new one.

macca1590
20th April 2011, 08:04 PM
i put the old radiator cap back on and she is all sweet, new one must be dogey or not seat properly or something in this radiator it was the cap from my rt142 rad and the new radiator is a st141 rad from wreckers, much better condition that what mine was, but the shroud took a bit of modding to get it to fit thoe

still unsure what i should be looking at on my o2 guage, i get 11-13 under acceleration and in closed loop mode while cruzing or light loads around town i get 13.5-15??????????????????

Those o2 figures sound pretty good for old fuel injection like ours. Hey this was pretty good the other day when I met u in briz. Wanted to see what sussy u were running as it was flat thru the corners :)

macca1590
2nd June 2011, 11:33 PM
wasnt real worried about them anyway, yeah mate i had a ball.

if ur to lazy to read through it all its basicly

ra65 struts and brakes, hsd weld on kit with 6kg/mm, excel g mr2 rears, ma61 camber tops, kelway strut brace, ra65 power steering arms, ra40 lca's(same as xt130) ajps rca's tie rods, ball joints, rack ends and lock spacer

and on the back
ae86 std length rear excel g shocks, cut au falcon's :S, bigm's rear camber kit

need/would like to change
solid rear subframe bushes, new rear control arm bushes, rear sway bar, heavers springs all round and if i do that i may need uprated shocks( should have just lashed out and bught adjustable to start off with)

Beefy_Heafy

oh no i read thru it all. good stuff. i have au falcon choppies also. no shame.. haha
yeah solid rear bushes for me also.
id like to fig a way to use s13 coilovers in the rear.

old toyota <3 haha

tension chain guide i think is actually some kind of plastic, sometimes they break or just wear down. should fix that pretty quick before the chain slaps around and does some damage. either that or you're just perma low on oil pressure lol.

yeah zac. i would instantly assume plastic guide failure but i have metal guides in this engine. also i have awesome oil pressure. perhaps the metal guide has come loose or failed though. i will look soon.

How is this going man?

macca1590
21st June 2011, 09:37 PM
yeah all sweet, survived the 600 odd km drive home, and got 8.9L/100!!! but then i realised that my diff ratio and tires probs throw it out a bit, at 100kmh buy my GPS the speedo is readig 110 so id assume 10% difference so like 9.79, which still seems good for 80's fuel injection haha
but the peace of crap is getting hot now, the thermostat is jamming shut, gets right up in the red before it opens and then runs at normal temp, can see the temp on the std gauge rise but the temp in top radator hose, where i mounted my other sensor, will still be cold untill it opens up then they equalise, and buy then it pressurries so much that it pushes all the water out into the overflow bottle and cause its fucking hot it just evaporates,, so when the thermostat dose opens and the whole show cools down there is no water left in the overflow bottle so it just sucks a gut full of air and my low water alarm goes off, story of my life i know haha, but what pisses me off is the thermostat is only 2 months old, its a tridon one or some shit thoe

Beefy_Heafy
22nd June 2011, 07:55 PM
try removing it and cutting out the little jiggle valve. that will allow a little water through and the temperature spike in the upper hose will soften out (done it in mine and it fixed the issue). also some thermostats just suck. u might have to get another. put it in some water and then add heat. watch with thermometer and see when it opens.

are u using coolant or water?
if u run a softer radiator cap. like .9bar it will displace more water but it wont be as wicked hot when it comes out so that might help.

macca1590
22nd June 2011, 09:47 PM
im using coolant, i got a old thermostat and just cut the spring out for the time being, so i get full flow and got hold of some acid based flush, cause this is the 2nd thermostat in like 4 months so mabey i got something in the system that is making them sticky??? i have no idea, worth a try, hopefully new thermostat comes tomora

blusil

I had similar problem flushed rad, changed hoses, thermostats, in desperation bought new rad. Problem fixed. Had a good look at old rad and had a hairline split that I am assuming would open up when hot.

finally figured it out!!!!!!!!!!!!!! well a few weeks ago but it was my own stupidness that was making the cooling system have spastic fits. there is this little water line that comes off from the heater line under the intake manifold and warms the idle speed control valve and the throttle body, and me being the genius i am just blocked it off thinking that in qld i shouldn't have to worry about that, but what i didnt take into account was that where it returned to the cooling system was just under/next to the thermostat, so when the engine is warming up warm water would be flowing through this little line and end up just under the thermostat/ and or the other direction drawing warm water past the thermostat.

aside from that just been driving it, i may neex/want heaver springs in the rear but first up i need new suspension bushes in the rear, both subframe mounts and control arms, but thats gonna have to wait till i get back from the SNOW!!!!!!!!! sooo excited, leave to head to perisher this friday with 8 mates from school

and gave it a little bath and took a pic with the new rims, and can i say what a absoolute kunt of a job to clean those

i would love to go lower, but the totaly awesome roads in qld are just soo smooth and pothole less that i cant justify going any lower............

anywho seeing as i am out in the sticks where many hairy mammals that hop live, i have installed some sneaky HID spotties behind the grill, makes a surprising difference, even behind the grill

also on the weekend i competed in the motormaina's khanacross with the central qld motor sport club. haven't got final results for individual lap times and my class but in total time over 8 runs i came 8th outa like 20 odd cars so im stoked as, anyway ran into a mate from tafe and he got a fiew happy snaps

totally different car to drive, hugs you way better and more comfy, lower. bad things - to low, cant see corners of bonnet for judgement and steering wheel too high, wish i had adjustable steering column.
and installed my hydraulic handbrake ready for the next motorkahana/kahanacross, wanted make it hidden but i screwed it up and buy then was sick of playing with it so i just gave up and cut the shit outa the plastic haha

gehto brakelines off xf falcon ute found in bush are a winner, nice big long straight section to bend up as you desire.

handbrake is awsome, locks up easy as, but its a bit weird, and the awsome 80's irs makes it feel real funny, it will sorta rare up a the back when you pull it and when you let it go it will squat back down, need some practice and it shouldn't be to bad and or harder springs and or shocks............ cut falcons arnt the greatest.

and ma61 seats are straight bolt in, not cutting no welding, no nothing. just use the standard ma61 rails and bobs ur uncle

been pretty quiet lately, mostly just daily around, done a few more motorkahana/khanax, swapped the standard suspension in for a few dirt events, ended up getting some new shocks and harder standard height springs was heaps of fun, handled the rough stuff pretty well, got some "rally tyres", went to the local tyre place and got some 14" maxxis light truck mud tyres, half the price of rally tyres and should last forever being a light truck tyre, looked pretty mad max spec with them on, dont have a pic unfortunately, i do however have a little vid from the last dirt kahanax courtesy of my brothers go pro
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZPFpEKHamrA

the rally club in Rockhampton has been working with a group of guys that is trying to get some drift events going in the area, they are hosting a drift style bitumen kahanx this weekend, getting pretty quick at swapping my suspension around so once again she is on the coil overs, couldn't be bothers swapping the camber adjustable rear sub frame but

terrible pic from phone

so hopefully i can hurry up and get the cressy going so i dont have to swap it over all the time haha
