Very cool :) Toyoglides are entertaining

Plans: stock 5K, 13x7 +/-0 MK2 175/60, sensibly lowered, JAF badge. done

Todd
20th July 2010, 09:21 PM
pretty spot on benzo. i was thinking a 5k and k50 with a nice webber, 13x7 0 hayashi streets, sensibly lowered with venetians. JAF badge is a thought too, guess we will see how it goes.

what good tyres come in 175 / 13's? i read there are some good 175/50s made for mini's that are pretty dope.

Niceeee! Jealous

Yeah Yokohama A539 (?) I think. They come from England I am pretty sure, because its all the rave over there. Profile is 175 / 50. I got some for the Mira, but no longer have them now. I know a place in SA that gets them in (think it might be MiniSport). From the reviews I heard / read they go really well, but be around $600 a set I think

Cheers Ross

Todd
20th July 2010, 09:58 PM
awesome thanks for the fusion!
i will scope out my local yoko dealer and see what they can do for me. hopefully can get my hands on some.

trying the wheel dealer tomorrow for some 13x7's in the meantime (ideally i want hayashi streets) but i might be able to find something suitable.

Fusion
20th July 2010, 10:01 PM
I tried my tyre shop I usually go to, and they searched the databases (as they are main dealers with Yokohama). Only 175/50 they had in Australia still was semi slicks at about $200 each. For a Mira it was just to much, but could be an option for the KE20 if you want to fork out the cash.

Could be different with yours though

federal fd1 come in 175/60?? dont think the yokis are made anymore or atleast not supplied to australia,

Nankang sell a range of 13" tyres, 175/60 in NS2s, 175/50 in AS-1s.
175/60, 165/55 in xr-611's.

I used to run 165/55's on my old 13x7's , pretty good and pretty cheap.

Todd

awesome stuff todd!

to polish the spokes just use the highest grade wet and dry you can find to get the paint off, and then proceed with every following wet and dry grade you can get. do dry sanding with it until you hit 400 and from 400-2000 wet sand it. use coke or brasso with a cloth to polish after that.

if you want a chrome look i suggest skipping the coke or brasso and instead use a polishing bit on a drill and buffing compound. if youre gonna do this however do the lips aswell

Todd
22nd July 2010, 03:49 PM
blurgh. sanding sucks!

Todd
22nd July 2010, 05:08 PM

165/65.13 front

got two of my tyres fitted, 165/65/13. the 70's I ordered were fucked, so sent them back and ordered another pair of 165/65/13 to match. alot easier to get on the beads.

i would go 4age, but to be perfectly frank i cant be bothered with the legality of the whole thing.
that and, im kinda sick of 4a powers. lol
Preston will have a spare tired 16v if it comes to that though.

i think a nicely put together warmed up 4k will be more than enough for this little guy. after all, i want to keep it OG.

blinded
23rd July 2010, 09:16 PM
Not sure if the 4K you're getting is warmed up, but if it isn't I wouldn't spend money on it, but instead go to a warm 5K instead! Just a much better base to begin with + extra 200cc which in a small car is heaps. Other than that, this thing is awesome as man, good find :) Looks great with those wheels too.

Todd
23rd July 2010, 09:20 PM
yeah, the only thing that puts me off 5k is that they are a little harder to find. and without an engine in the meantime it wouldn't be a fun wait.

It's always a possibility in the future. not as if k engines take a while to replace :P

blinded
23rd July 2010, 09:33 PM
Yeah they are a little harder to find, but, I was meaning build it on the side as I thought you already had a 4K there waiting to replace the blown 3K. And yeah definitely a day job to change engines! Best thing about K series :P

And, if you arn't already, you should sign up on Rollaclub. Should be able to find a 5K off someone on there for sure :)

Todd
23rd July 2010, 09:40 PM
yepp ideally thats what i would do. build one on the side. i like your thinking :P
i have been on rollaclub for yonnkkks, only i just very rarely use it that's all.
cheers for the headsup though dude, appreciated.

Whats the difference between Jap and Aus diffs?

AUS diff = borgwarner, found in many Aus cars

JAP diff = banjo-type, found in many toyotas...

blair
26th July 2010, 05:46 PM
The benefits of one over the other being?

edit: that sounds rude lol, i just have no idea :P

Todd
26th July 2010, 06:10 PM
thanks for the nice comments guys, hopefully will be doing laps round the park tonight.

in regards to your question blair, to be honest i have no real idea lol. what i do know though is that the tailshaft flange on the diff is different between the two diffs, and considering i had an auto and borgwarner diff (different tailshaft output on the toyoglide) i had to get the right tailshaft to suit the k40 box. which happened to bolt up to a jap diff (which a mate of mine had lying around) so i picked that all up as an entire drivetrain conversion.

i hope that sorta helps, im not very good at explaining stuff sorry :P

anyway, in other news, i just ran the 4k at idle for 15 or so minutes, and it sounds healthy. just need to drop the oil out again and refill it with new stuff. about to get started on the diff swap also which should be fun.

also got myself a macbook pro today (which i am writing this entry from). shit is so good! haha.

peace gangsters, prepare for more updates soon!

Nice work homie!!

(I have a decent cond KE25 steering wheel for this)

Todd
27th July 2010, 04:01 PM
so anyway, todays update is that it runs - but not that well.
seems to be puffing alot of white smoke out the back, and cant figure out why. oil level is not dropping at at all, so i cant imagine the rings are gone.
it idles quite ok, and then once you get it spinning a bit faster, more white smoke comes out the back and i gets hesitant and sounds like it is missing or there is a probem with timing or something.

anyone have any insight into the wonderful world of 'k' engines for me?

blinded
27th July 2010, 05:39 PM
White smoke = water vapour? ie. BHG maybe.

Any milkshakes happening under the oil cap?

Todd
27th July 2010, 06:08 PM
well yeah we just replaced the headgasket, so im unsure if the headgasket itself is screwed. it has been like this since the first startup last night.
i can confirm it is water vapour though, sitting back and watching the zorst shows droplets flicking out every now and again.

i just dropped the oil for the second time, the oil beforehand (i bought it knowing it had a BHG) was milkshake and had been sitting around in the engine for a while before i got it.
im thinking i just need the keep flushing the oil and get all of the old shitty stuff out that has been mixed with water, and until then its going to keep smoking.

in regards to the hesitaton, it only does it when in gear and driving. the engine revs out fine in neutral or clutch in. this is still bothering me and i cant figure out why?

KENut
27th July 2010, 06:29 PM
4K carbys are gay. Get rid of it if you can.
Seriously, they arent even worth fiddling with (too much anyway).

You cant adjust mixture (except idle mixture). By bending the accel pump lever you might be able to improve it.
And blast it with carb cleaner too.

blinded
27th July 2010, 07:14 PM
Could still be a bhg, but not where the water is mixing with the oil, but just a blow out so water is leaking into a bore :S

And yes, stock carbies are rubbish! Mine used to have flat spots when ever I accelerated too, so I did away with it and replaced it with a 32/36 Weber. Was muuuuuuch better!

Twin carbs are where it's at though :P

KENut
27th July 2010, 10:34 PM
I agree with what you say Blinded.

My 4K has 10,000km on it and runs rough due to condensation (well I'm pretty certain, fingers crossed) until proper hot, about 10 mins.

Still having carby problems after fiddling with it for over a year!
Must put my twins on...;)

carb issue is sorted, swapped it out for another spare i had lying around and it works fine.
still blowing white smoke (hoping it will just go away at this stage).
trying to bleed the brakes finally and get it ready for the road but the master cylinder is playing funny buggers.

I love this, Inspiration for my ke10. The wheel's suit it perfectly, Actually they make me want to sell my rim's and get something similar. Do they fit the guard's well and don't go to close to the strut ?

yeah dude they dont get too close to the strut at all. sit about 15mm away from the tube itself, there is plenty of room :)
would happily run 8s with 5 or 10mm less inside clearance.
makes me happy to hear i have inspired you though. there needs to be more tastefuly modded keX0's out there!

My Simmons v1's are 5mm off the strut with the tyre about 1mm. I think if I get tyres stretched onto the rim it will clear, I don't want to roll my guard's. Those wheel's are a good alternative. It's not the usual SSR mesh or mesh rim that alot of people seem to use which I like!

There doesn't seem to be many keX0's out there that have been done nicely in the ke10's/20's. The 10's all seem to have the wrong wheel's, interior.. etc.

yeah so today was a busy-ish day. got a fair bit done, but nothing really worked how i wanted it to.

new springs are Lovells super-lows (i call BS on the last bit as you will soon see)

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/4/1/3/5/50950.jpg

height compared to stock:

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/4/1/3/5/50951.jpg

in place with the camber tops (which are backwards for some reason? lol)

(i will give it a week for the springs to settle in, and then out comes garry the grinder)

leaf springs FTL

will be organising some blocks for them shortly i think. take that down at least 2 inches, then will find a suitable matching height for the front.
Aaron, you wouldnt happen to know of anywhere in japan that i can source a front lip would you?

Jdm-Mcc
15th August 2010, 08:42 PM
Much better! if your happy with your spring rates in the rear go blocks or get the leaves reset, the ones in my ute were heaps stiff from the factory soo i took the load leaf out flipped the 2nd top leaf onto the top and added a 120y bottom leaf, i also run 35mm blocks on top of that :)

cheers for the link pigeon, have read through that guide quite a few times previously and intend to keep it up whilst the engine comes along.

having troubles with my indicators and hazards not working now. here's a copy paste from rollaclub with my issue:

hi everyone.
recently replaced the starter motor in my '72 ke20 with a rebuilt one and of course removed the battery when doing so.
my problem is now that the car is fixed, the indicators seem to have called it quits all together.

went around and checked all bulbs individually, they all appear fine.
the single fuse above the drivers footwell marked 'turn' has not blown.
went into the column indicator switch and gave it a good clean out making sure to check all the contacts etc and it too is fine.
checked the flasher unit and it has been replaced recently and appears in good condition, and made sure to check the connections to and from the unit itself and nothing appears out of ordinary.

is there something i am missing here? possibly another fusebox somewhere?
seems strange that both the hazards and the indicators no longer work after removing and replacing the battery.

can someone please shed some light on the situation? it might be just that i am overlooking a certain aspect of the problem without realising, or perhaps there is more to it.

regards,
todd.

Pretty gay if you ask me. i have no idea what im missing that will fix the problem :(

yeah man, completely custom, but very easy to fab considering the carb inlets are equally spaced, and dont involve a flange on the carb side. just attached by rubber boots.
similar to this setup i think is the way to go:

thats how they are mounted to all sportsbikes though, single rubber boot for each carb. i thought it was sketchy too, but the boots are actually pretty weighty themselves so should hold up perfectly.

I'd be interested to know how the bike carbs go compared to side draughts in both performance and price. If I remember correctly, my setup with new manifold, linkages, soft mounts, and carbs + rebuild kits, and tuning left me with little change from 2 grand.

Definitely can't wait to see how it turns out for you mate. Also, I have seen a thread on RC of a little orange? KE20 with bike carbs. Can't remember the user name, but if you searched for it, it may have some useful info :)

yeah its been done a couple of times on k engines. as far as price goes put it this way, im getting change from 500 after i have everything (including raw materials to make the manifold and get the flanges water cut)
here are a few threads i have found on the net discussing the idea:

http://www.rollaclub.com/board/topic/19886-my-ke-11/page__hl__flatside__st__90
http://www.rollaclub.com/board/topic/38592-quad-carby-setup/page__hl__mikuni__st__15
http://www.club-k.co.nz/Forums/viewthread.php?tid=14837

it's unpopular purely because i think people are worried about using motorcycle parts on a automobile. makes no sense really, considering carbs in particular do the same thing no matter what engine they are on.
in terms of performance, a guy who has built a tough TRD 4k swears cbr900rr carbs on his engine blew DCOES away in terms of response, smoothness of revs and power delivery.
guess it's really what you are willing to take on with your build and what tools/knowledge you have at your disposal though as to what people are more comfortable with.

yeah, there is much more engineering etc in a bike carb like that than a DCOE setup. more revs etc.

makes so much sense

same as hayabusa throttles, they are cheap as chips, 45mm throat, and far better designed than the 20v units.

come on noddy, finish it.

Todd

yep, mine are 40mm inlet though as they are off a gsx6r.
it's on the way princess, getting my brothers engine stand today so im going to assemble the motherfucker tonight.
Got my ACL gasket kit yesterday so it's just waiting time til i get the stand really.

and if anyone has used VHT wrinkle engine paint before on valve covers, how fucking dope is the finish?!!? pics up this evening

ow far away is this vehicle from being an operational vehicle

Todd
28th November 2010, 06:20 PM
it is an operational vehicle, i drive it every day haha

but the new engine is maybe a week off install, might get it in within the week if i get round to it. only takes a couple of hours.

the carb manifold might take a couple of weeks though, as i dont have immediate access to a welder. brother has to use his work one.

Gunner

update:
installed lifters and pushrods.
i am in need of some 186mm pushrods from a late 4k, which i think i have in my other engine at the moment.
the 3k head is a little taller than the 4k one, and because im using 4k rocker gear i believe i have to compensate for the 5mm extra pushrod length by using longer ones than i have spare.
180mm just wont cut it.
so will have to wait until i get my other engine out to see what length those ones are.

more pictures, and a new addition that is getting a make-over as we speak.

love the choice of colour for the extractors!!!

should get a yzz corolla oil filter from toyota, they are about half the size of your current one, better for oil pressure ive heard.

can see pics of one in my build thread.

Todd
5th December 2010, 09:30 PM
thanks for the kind words peeps.

yeah tally, i have heard similar, but i have shimmed the oil pump relief valve so i have a little more oil pressure, i think the idea of keeping the stock (or larger) oil filter is only beneficial. especially considering it's a new engine and needs to be run in. will be all those little 'wear in' pieces of metal around so the larger the filter element, the better :)

next week i am organising to get those inlet flanges water cut, so once i have done that they go to my brother and he gets some stainless pipe, a welder and makes shit happen.

also beginning to track down a zx6r fuel pump to suit the carbs. hopefully wont cost me a mint.

Gunner
5th December 2010, 09:35 PM
you sure it will be big enough to send fuel all the way to the front of the car?

Todd
5th December 2010, 09:58 PM
yeah it has worked in ka powered ae86's running on cvk's. also has worked with the common VW polo and golf conversions and the like so i cant see it being a problem.

the fuel tank itself is located directly behind the rear seats in an upright position anyway, not underneath the bootwell like AE/KE corollas.
the reason for running one is that the cvk carbs can suffer from over-filling and leaking if they are fed by conventional carb fuel pumps. the kawasaki pump has an internal solenoid/valve that senses backpressure from the carb bowls (there is a valve that shuts once the bowls fill up) which i think will be necessary to avoid leakages. they run low pressure but high volume. something like that anyway, haha

Gunner
5th December 2010, 10:16 PM
ah k cool, good work tood.

Clinton
6th December 2010, 01:45 AM
todd you are fucking insane

taz_rx
6th December 2010, 04:06 PM
So is it a 3k head on a 4k? If so you need to use the 4k pushrods. The 3k head isn't taller the lifters just drop further into the block.

Todd
6th December 2010, 04:35 PM
ah k thanks for the clear up taz.
yeah i have 4k pushrods, but there are two different lenghts 180 and 186mm.
i believe the 186's are in my other 4k which is still in the car at the moment, so hopefully can put them in once i remove that engine.

cheers

taz_rx
8th December 2010, 10:11 AM
186's are the ones you want. 180's are from a 4ku

Todd
8th December 2010, 12:35 PM
wonder how i ended up with 180mm ones? i did have a dished piston 4k that i pulled down a little while ago.

84coupe
9th December 2010, 01:28 PM
Enough talk!

Just get some push rods already...

taz_rx
10th December 2010, 11:09 AM
Yeah dished piston 4k = 4ku. They actually got a lot harder than a 4kc.

Don't chuck out the 180mm's, some people will pay good money for those (4ku are pretty rare in aus) for a 5k solid lifter conversion. ;)

Todd
10th December 2010, 01:41 PM
sweet :) thats handy to know. thanks taz!

i still have the pistons and head off of that engine so i might throw it all up on rollaclub as a set :)

minus the pushrods haha
