View Full Version : rhys's brown ke70 wagon

rhys2229
25th July 2010, 09:21 PM
hey chaps i've recently bought this wagon as my orange ke sedan wasnt big enough to cater for my needs.
I'm an apprentice carpenter hence the need for a wagon.

I bought this gem today,a 1983 metalic brown flat front wagon with 128 000kms, mint interior, tightest k-50 gearbox i've come across, one original owner stock as a rock. Only downside is the suspected blown head gasket, fingers crossed that hasnt cracked the head or block,

my plans are to swap all the goodies from my sedan into this than sell the sedan.

The list of goodies i'll swap over include:

Rebuild and tuned weber 32/36 carby
4-1 redback extractors
front k-sport coilovers unknown spring rate but stiff as F#$K
front castor brace/jack point
audio gear
shortened boge shocks in the rear
momo steering wheel
delta mesh 14x6 (unknown offset) rims on rear
volk mesh 14x7 +3 offset on front
car seat covers to protect the seats

The things i need to buy/do:

get blueslip by replacing head gasket, welding patch on hole in exhaust, replacing struts with spare ke front struts i have.
flip rear leafs

probably more to come but cant think of anything else, heres some pics

Supposedly a 1 piece gasket is what you want to get a good seal on a K,
quite a few people swear by them as opposed to the normal 2 piece.

Is this the one that was for sale with the AE71 (as a pair)?

its actually the header to exhaust pipe gasket that doesnt want to seal properly, i'll just load it up with gasket cement, oh and yeh it was for sale in a pair,

Won't work I've had the same problem for ages.

rhys2229
18th August 2010, 05:37 PM
i fixed it yiewwww, i took the front half of the exhaust off and where the pipe joins onto the manifold and there was a hairline crack, welded it up and also found the remains of the old gasket, sealed it up and its perfect now.
and also got a blueslip today,

They look like they will need more than just a pressure wash. If you jack the back of the car up and run it in second gear while it's on stands you'll be able to sand the dish with wet and dry. Start coarse and work down through the grits. Then polish the same way, I prefer to use a calico wheel with "rouge" on the pistol drill but autosol on a rag can still get a reasonable shine out on the lip. Here's the MA's i did like that...

http://i247.photobucket.com/albums/gg128/stahlz_ae86/MA61wheel-1.jpg

I'm about to do my volk fins the same way (same size as your meshies too haha).

rhys2229
7th September 2010, 08:30 PM
thats friggen shiny, i'll try that cheers

stahlz_ae86
7th September 2010, 08:39 PM
For safety, chock both the front wheels, and make sure the car is securely placed up with the diff on jack stands. I usually use the left side of the diff as my polishing side and chock the right wheel which has a tyre on it so it doesn't spin, sending all the drive left from memory. You will notice that without chocking the right wheel it will run out of momentum as you apply pressure with the sandpaper.

should look well when the front is dropped!

rhys2229
18th October 2010, 08:51 PM
yeh i got them done at all springs at moorebank, cost me $250 for reset and adding a leaf both sides. $150 for just reset. pedders and other suspension shops go to them apparently. i took the leafs out. pretty straight forward. there number is 9601 6155.

john84ie
19th October 2010, 04:03 PM
thanks mate, gunna see can i get mine done, how much you lower by?

rhys2229
19th October 2010, 06:05 PM
the maximum with these leafs is only like 1.5inches after that the leafs bend the wrong way, to get them lower you can put inch lowering blocks in.

also have a mate with a ae71 wagon that i can take the running gear out of, not sure if i want to though,

rhys2229
31st October 2010, 06:16 PM

also dame tempted to buy one of the two cars for parts ae86 with 4agze or ke70 with carby 4age both running rolla with 12 months rego but both need alot of tlc, either one would make the wagon fly

john84ie
29th November 2010, 04:55 PM
hey mate, how are you finding the reset leaves?did you put in different shocks or just leave standard?i was just on to that crowd who done yours,he wants 270 to re-set and add a leaf so probly courier them down to him as i got quoted 260 in canberra just for reset,no extra leaf..so you reckon 1.5inches is max you can lower buy?

rhys2229
29th November 2010, 05:08 PM
there very stiff, i used my sedan shocks short stroke boge turbo's, yeh it was about 1.5 inches reset then you can use lowering blocks if need be, i hit bump stops without lowering blocks, i need to cut them down.

myke90
30th November 2010, 08:33 AM
John84ie - i just had my leafs reset 3inches (90mm) with an extra leaf put in but still yet to see how that goes - running new siera shocks. should be fine. used to have 3inch lowering blocks with stock leafs and old shocks so it would sag 10 more cm once off the jack and still go great. :)

post more pics Rhys!! :D wagon love bro haha

john84ie
30th November 2010, 01:10 PM
so you reckon 3" will work?one place i rang told me 1.5 was the max as well,i was hopin for 2.5,would be nice to not have to use lowering blocks

myke90
30th November 2010, 01:32 PM
When you think about it i'v just deleted the 3' lowering blocks by resetting the leafs.
If you check out Eddy's Pano build on here you'll see how reset his leafs were - thats like 3.5 inches reset. it's probably because the workshops don't think the leafs should bend backwards with that amount of low?? not sure.
