Cheers Sven. Might get pics of it being stock next week for you when the alternator arrives from Darwin.

Depends on my lazy arse and money haha

Done . . .

- Ordered alternator from Darwin
- Sanded back and painted inner guards
- H - pattern gear knob
- Standard steering wheel
- Bushes (LCA, trailing arm and castor rod)
- 14" stockies with new Bridgestones
- Import papers
- Remove aircon
- Inner guard plastics
- Brake line clips
- Remove rear seats and stereo system

To do . . .

- Exhaust system
- Fix the rust
- Send it to Fours n More for . . . big tune, engine leaks, ramflo air filters with breather etc
- Wheel alignment
- New front seat belts

Should have the exhaust system and seat belts done next week, after that it should be going to Fours n More.

Once its all done though, should be pretty mint to drive

Should put a big thanks out to Dave from AJPS for helping me out so far and Javal for checking it all out for me

Got some more jack stands and a hydrualic jack today to do some work under the car. Will have to wait till I have a free moment though

Also booked a car trailer to get the exhaust done next Wednesday. Going 2" for now to keep things quiet, but will be upgraded when I do the engine work later on.

And I got a call saying the 80amp alternator should be here next Wednesday, so thats another thing off the list.

Also got the seatbelts out, ready for Wilshire Trimmers to make new ones.

There goes another grand :hehe:

Fusion

Congrats on the buy, but how come you're getting it complianced as a 2 seater and not a 4?

1) No rear seatbelts, so another thing I would have to sort out
2) I would never use them, so whats the point. Having a legal 2 seater is handy
3) Could make it better if I do install a half cage later on, legal wise

So basically I hardly use the rear seats to justify seting it up properly. So why not. I still have all the origanl gear that cam with the car (in mint coniditon) and will be keeing it incase I ever want to change it back.

Any reasons why I should be, that I'm not taking into consideration? :)

stahlz_ae86
21st August 2010, 10:22 PM
Only reason I could think of would be originality. I love the reat seat arrangement in my sprinter (AE70) enough so that I'm putting the T-18 flip down rear seats in my AE71. I could compare the rear seatbelts in my sprinter to other E7's/Toyota's if you decide you want to go that way, to help you find the closest possible belts to original.

Fusion
21st August 2010, 10:25 PM
I'm not neccesairly keep this car as a stock original. That wasn't the plan from the start. More just having something quite unique

I would have to get new seatbelts made up to ADR regulations anyways, as is the way with the RTA here in SA.

They are better off out of the car, not being damaged haha

Cheers for the offer Munchen, but I've already dropped off the seatbelts to Wilshire Trimmers. They were more than happy to help me out with a custom set for around $300 all up

Also looks like the alternator is ready earlier than said . . . WIN!

And it looks like I'll be booking into Fours n More for next week.

So it will be pretty much done by end of next week hopefully is all goes to plan

Soo exhaust was done today, flange up so I can change to something louder later on. Still got mad induction noise though :D

Alternator went in fine after the hammer and files came out! Works like a charm and starts up better now.

And seatbelts where done in 1 1/2 days, which I was very pleased with.

So better get off my slack arse and book it into Fours n More if money pleases

Dave! How was holidays?

Not a big one for going sideways, I'll leave that to you :D

Cars ready at the workshop. Got told a few more interesting things

- Fuel system was still running the EFI pump. So was pumping fuel so hard (i think i got that right) it was returning to the tank. So new fuel system
- Couple of bits of bad wiring. So new wiring
- I think they said it was at 12 AFR on the dyno. Running really rich, especially at 6,000RPM. So they have changed the jets / needles (keep forgetting the term)
- Found some more rust in the radiator panel. They fixed that up aswell

So its pretty much nearly a new car after all the work done on it . . lol Better drive better than a normal stock Corolla :D

Should have pics of it when it gets home this week

Fusion
5th October 2010, 08:05 PM
Sooo another little update.

- More tuning sessions. Running really stable now and breathes really well apprently.
- Reckons that by the condition of the motor, it is deffiantly the original kilometers on the tacho.
- Very minor compression loss on cyclinder 4, also backfires only on cyclinder 4 when very cold. Nothing major though, so will look into it later on when I do some engine upgrades.
- Went in with about 60KW of power and looks to be in the 70KW + range now. So happy its found power.
- Added a choke cable to make sure it doesn't backfire on start up and set alight the filters.

Should be home this week, so than I'll get off my ass and organise the side intrusion bars one way or another

Cheers Ross

Fusion
12th November 2010, 06:48 PM
Sooo thought I would update this.

Its been sitting in the shed for a good while. Been busy with family commitments or University unfortunately.

And to top it off the wiring in the engine bay caught alight somehow . . .

So another thing to add to the list.

Fours n More found out that the carbies were a little . . . messed up. Wrong size jets etc and from a Datsun tripple carb engine. So they were sorted out for Toyota items.

Starts rough on cyclinder 4 when cold, but when warm feels amazinginly smooth and revs to 7,000rpm really nicely.

Isn't any quiter with filters on, lets hope Regency doesn't mind

By the time it goes through Regency, the majority of it will be near new (drivetrain wise). Guess thats 30 years old for you though :D

Not sure when it will be done though . . . depends on those lovely things called money and time

Cheers Ross

Andy San
25th November 2010, 01:08 PM
hey ross have you changed the trumpets over so they are all matching? that would be the cause of the roughness in cyl 4 i am fairly certain.

Fusion
25th November 2010, 01:34 PM
No that wasn't the problem.

It's now sporting air filters instead of trumpets for Regency with all the emmision pipes hooked up properly, including the breather.

Main problems where the fuel system, which was replaced for a more carby friendly version, and the carberuttors you were using. They were from a Datsun tripple setup, and wern't properlly setup for a 2TG.

Brenton checked the valves, but they all looked fine. The only thing he could find was that cyclinder four was down about 10 in compression compared to the other 3 so maybe it was the piston ring.

Once its warmed up, it runs really smooth and revs to 7,000RPM really nicely.

Also the AFR was really rich and that was also fixed up on the dyno.

I also thinking their might be a slight issue with the wiring / ignition causing a rough startup. I will be able to confirm this when it gets back from Coopers Automotive

Andy San
25th November 2010, 01:59 PM
sweet, so it revs cleanly up high now? always felt a little choked up at the top end.

get the pitman arm sorted?

Fusion
25th November 2010, 02:33 PM
Yeah revs really cleanly through the gears when its warmed up properly.

Unfortunately not. Haven't been able to find one in the size I need. Tried a few places, but people in Australia don't want much to do with it lol

Hows the new engine going?

Now have Cusco Camber tops arriving. Going to slowly build up the front end parts, and either do it in two stages or all at once.

Also saving up on the side to get it on the road, but other things keep finding a way to come first haha

So went to start her up in about a month, and found out the battery was dead . . . again. So went out and bought a new bigger more powerful one. Plopped it in place and found out I have the wrong terminals. So went out again.

Finally got her running again, when smoke came into the cabin. Got a little worried, but it went away after a few minutes. Guessed it just must have not been run in a while and wasn't to happy :D

Found a guy to fix up the rust, and looks like he might be doing it in the next few weeks. And also found more stock interior pieces.

So hopefully in two months time I will be ready for Regency

yay

have you got wheels for this yet?

Fusion
12th March 2011, 06:14 PM
No. I would love to get some, but its 1+ grand thats better off being spent getting it registered. I've been very tempted though haha

When I do though it will be the mesh varitey in 15 x 8 and 15 x 7.5 with around 0 offset most likely.

Main problem I have at the moment is I'm travelling to much to get a chance ot work on the car.

So, I now have a crossmember, steering rack and steering coloum for the conversion.

While its out I am going to get it all rebuilt along with a quaife rack. Should feel very different afterwards

Think I've found a good place near by to do the work, so interested to see how they turn out

Hey,

So I thought I'd finally get around to posting some images. New job means I've been in another state more than being home. So its been more about parts collection than actually getting it Registered.

First up, the new seat for the cockpit. The Velo. Feels great to sit, and its not even in the car!

18609

Next the sweet sound system that came with the car. Probably won't put it back in. Tempted, but I most likely won't sell it either.

186101860718605

Next up is the Cusco strut brace that Dave got for me from Japan

18608

And the Cusco camber tops that I bought off here

18603

That matches nicely with the Cusco adjustable castor arms, thanks to Benzo

18611

And to show my support with a little fanfare

18606

As mentioned previously I bought new gear to re-do the complete steering system.
First up the Quaife Rack

18601

Along with new bits to freshen it all up

18604

I also decided that the fender mirros on it didn't see the match each other and were also a little used. So I bought some more. I will be still keeping the original ones though.

18602

So hopefully this is acceptable to the people who wanted photos. Sorry for none of the car, but not much has changed. Still keen to get the rust fixed, but need to be home longer than 6 days to achieve that.

Thanks go out yet again to Dave from AJPS and Benzo for all the help / gear!

Yeah had a thing for meshies of that sort for years now. So it will either be something like that or maybe even something similar to SSR Fins.

Won't be happening for a while though as I know it will cost me around the 1.5 - 2K mark. Even tempted to get MA61's for the mean time.

What car are you onto now Andy?

Ive sold the daihatsu to clay, and now I'm driving a ST185 GT4, which is way too complex to work on and it does my head in :(

Haha thought you might of sold it by now, and onto a new toy. Any good to drive?

And yeah I did pay a bit for the Quaife gear, but I'm doing this Corolla right. Its going to be my ultimate one yet pretty much, done the way I want it. In the end I think the steering gear will be around 1.5K mark and the suspension will be about another 2K.

Awesome quote Javal!

Had ideas in my head for a while now about making up custom sheet metal parts for the Corolla

A template idea for a radiator fan shroud, obviosuly in smaller form

19017
19018
19019

End product will have the corners welded and a rubber strip added before mounting to try and get it air tight as possible, but it at least helps me realise the things that have been inside my head :DD

Pulled the old girl out of storage and cleaned her up since it was such nice weather

21621
21620
21622
21623

And afterwards I opened her up to 7,000 rpm and stretched her legs a bit

Felt good to hear the ol girl running again

In other news I'm thinking of moving her on

If you decide to sell, please PM me as buying this would save me from rebuilding the AE70.

Cheers,

Why are you thinking of selling?

Fusion

New things happening in life. Don't need another item to add to the black hole where money dissapears. Wouldn't be able to complete it for around another 12 months and don't have the space to store it. That and its a little depressing seeing it just sit there when it sounds so lovely.
