Car: RA65
Car use (e.g grip/drift): Drift
Front Struts:Tomei S13 Coilovers, Apexi Springs
Spring Rate/ Free Height:8/9kg, 200mm?
Inserts (brand/model): No idea.
LCA's:MX62 (Fresh bushes/joints)

Panhard Rod:[/B] Whaaat?
4 Link: As above.
Sway Bar: Stock - To be upgraded to adjustable.

Con's:To much track with rims bigger then 7's needs S13 LCA.

Extra Comments: This setup really needs a 6/7k Spring rate in the rear end and some sway bars and front strut brace will be added shortly

Con's: quite bumpy on shit roads, needs an alignment

Car: JDM AE86
Car use (e.g grip/drift): Both with a tendancy for the sideways
Front Struts: Deed coilovers
Spring Rate/ Free Height: 8kg front 10kg rear, ?
Inserts (brand/model):
LCA's: stock
RCA's (size if you have them): none
Strut Tops: Section camber tops
Rear Springs/Shocks: Deed Coilovers. They are inverted to fit into the std rear shock mounting

Pro's: The whole setup is adjustable to the settings I want/need to drive the car fast
Con's: I wish there was rear camber so I could set it up to go faster

Extra Comments: Theres also a full set of whiteline adj. sway bars as well set to max stiffness with a full nolathane bushing upgrade on the way. Its been an experience to set up a car this light with a solid rear axel. Have never dealt with old gemies and escorts so this was my first time at it. Hopefully with good tyre choice and the right driving style I can get this to run as fsat or faster then most things on the street.

8th February 2009, 05:03 PM
Car: AE86
Car use (e.g grip/drift): want a fast track car which i can setup quickly for drift and hill climbs.
Front Struts: hks hypermax D's
Spring Rate/ Free Height: 8kg now, have 6 and 11's in the tool box
Inserts (brand/model): HKS
LCA's: shortened s13 (needed to fit 15x8 -3 under the guards while still being low)
Strut Tops: Cusco
Rear Springs/Shocks: 6kg ATM, have 4 and 9 in the box. pug 909 shockers upgrading soon

Pro's: adjustability, brakes, lock, no slop, strength.
Con's: the local tyre place scratching their heads when it's time for alignment. I'll tell you when i drive it.

Extra Comments: good tyres, all bushes replaced, t3 panhard, pillowball castor arms, traction brackets, cusco strut brace, swaybars, rear brace, seam welded, chassis strengthened and a few other things.

10th February 2009, 01:52 AM
Car: AE86
Car use (e.g grip/drift): daily, hills, the odd slide
Front Struts: Coilovers on 86 struts
Spring Rate/ Free Height: 8kg, lowest height
Inserts (brand/model): KYB GT4 shocks
LCA's: XT130
RCA's (size if you have them): 30mm T3 I think
Strut Tops: Cusco

Rear Springs: 210mm 6kg
Rear Shocks: TRD blue 8way

Pro's: Rear feels very nice. Not unbearably stiff. Grips well, will slide when you want.
Con's: Little bit bouncy in the front, would want it lower in the front, little bit of roll in the front.

Extra Comments: Ideally needs some thicker sway bars and different front coilovers, the shocks are shit and coilovers wont go low enough.

driftke70
10th February 2009, 03:50 PM
Car: ke70
Car use (e.g grip/drift): hills and track
Front Struts: coil overs on xt130 struts,
Spring Rate/ Free Height: 8kg, around 220
Inserts (brand/model): tokico hts
LCA's: gh
RCA's (size if you have them): 40mm
Strut Tops: racing logic, will eventually replace with something if i deem it neccisary.

Rear Springs: 215 6kg
Rear Shocks: tokico hts
Sway bars : 18mm adj rear 21mm non adj front

Pro's: adjustable, extra track in the front matches the extra width of f series very nicely.
Con's: dont know

Extra Comments: I need to drive it and dial it in.

10th February 2009, 09:44 PM
Car: AE71 Spirit
Car use: Street/Grip
Front Struts: AE86
Spring Rate/ Free Height:6kg, not sure of free height.
Inserts (brand/model): Koni Sport ST185
LCA's: XT130
RCA's (size if you have them): 30mm Techno Toy Tuning
Strut Tops: AE86 Tein Cambertops with the correct caster for ke70 for some reason. Just got lucky. Must be for added caster on AE86.
Caster Arms: Standard
Bushings: Mixture of Nolathane, and Super Pro. All of them have been changed.
4 links: standard
Panhard Rod: Whiteline Adjustable on car
Rear Springs: Cut standards
Rear Shocks: TRD Green 8 way (kyb)
Swaybars: Whiteline f & r. 22mm front, 17mm rear. Non adjustable. You can get some sort of adjustment with looser or tighter D bushes on the rear. Tight for drifting, looser for grip. I install oversize bushes to stiffen it up.

Pro's: Has a quaife Rack installed, very neutral steering, turns in hard. Very adjustable damping and ride height. Comfortable to drive in as its got travel and droop.

Con's: Has a little bit of bump steer since I lowered it an extra 10mm, but is easily manageable. Had basically none before that.

Extra Comments: It cannot be any higher than the ride height its at, or the inserts can sometimes top out. Thats why it went down 10mm recently. Cater set in mid 3s. Toe neutral.

Bracing: Ultra racing fender and rear 4 point braces. Cusco strutbrace up front.

Panhard Rod: cusco adjustable
4 Link: custom adjustable lower arms with nolathane bushes standard upper
Rear Swaybar: Cusco 20mm

Bracing:
front cusco strut tower brace
rear cusco suspension tower brace

Pro's:easily adjustable, shocks and springs allways have full travel as each is adjustable independantly. on track fucking awesome, even on a medium setting there is bugger all roll. wound on full hard almost zero roll. plenty smooth when sliding if you want. ok for daily driving, medium setting spot on for winding roads and provides a good mix of no understeer, bump handling, roll and very neutral with a bit of subtle over steer.
on track on with hard setting is extremely neutral, and is farily forgiving but nub it good and proper and it bite you in the ass (which my GF found out the first time at wakefield driving it)
Con's: bit expensive initially but once properly setup fucking awesome. the electronic controller is waste of fucken time. so glad i didnt get it.
they're not rebuildable..

Rotors and calipers are a bit different, although easily fited to any AE86 especially with a 5stud swap.
Rear 4link is rarer but not unheard of.

Rear 4link is rarer but not unheard of.

again not really unheard of in the brake department either, ive got a similar set up and still 4x114

4 link is not that uncommon either, maybe in a street car but not in the race cars or drift cars.

if its the MR2 shocks again not really i remember this was the go back in the old toymods days. ae92 where the shocks of choice back then too.

what is unheard of in your set up? Another display of your child like IQ level Dave... Sadly, those with a similar level of maturity will (again) find humour in your pathetic attempt at creating an argument.... How about we quote the whole post and pick it apart together (instead of just the bit you want to make an argument from), think you can handle that Dave?...

Car: AE86
Car use (e.g grip/drift): Grip, Hill Climb, Circut

Pro's: Virtually unheard of setup (in AE86 circles) working exactly as was intended. Simple yet very effective.
Con's: None as yet.
Yeah, fair enough, coilovers with AGX shocks & 7kg springs aren't unheard of. Im yet to see or hear of another 86 with 4-piston AP calipers with falcon rotors mounted on the correct hubs (falcon hubs), anyone can re-drill a suitable rotor to suit thir existing hub, has anyone ever studied the standard wheel bearings in an 86?! I'll grab a pic of the falcon hub with ruler, see if you can figure out why I insisted on fitting them. As for the rear, find another 86 running no sway bar at all, in a developed proven setup using standard springs (note, a developed 86, not some 17yr old who found out how to operate a grinder....)
Pull your head out of your 30yr old arse and get a life Dave, you're pathetic. I'll look forward to your reply that will no doubt be a personal attack as when you have no other genuine argument to present, personal attacks always look good in your follower's eyes, dont they?!
PS. I got your message - "Medwin is giving TAS a bad reputation" haha are you really that narrow minded?!
PSS. Tein's you're selling at a 150% mark up I can readily get (overnight, infact), and am all too happy to continue selling on for my trade price, thats what "helping the community" is, not lining your own pockets whilst bullshitting promises that you're doing super deals to unsuspecting noobs who dont bother to shop around because they want that oh so brilliant ajps sticker.....

the falcon hub sounds like a cool setup, how'd you get it to fit on there? you retaining the ae86 axel? or you weld on a falcon one or something?

I might try a rear sway bar first then maybe 8kg/6kg springs and if i'm not happy with that ill pm you about messing with the shocks.

T3 arms are good. but if your running RCA i would get longer bolts than you would normally use as they are a bit thicker than the standard arms. i'm only running them on the out setting because my wheel hit the body before i run out of lock.

Pro's: Front feels solid, predictable and flat when driven in a "grip manner". Stable under brakes. Has excellent ground clearance, ripple strips are nasty:embarassed:
Con's: To soft at the rear, violent snap/roll oversteer. It is too soft in the rear compared to the front. Most likely the small factory rear swaybar and lack of castor don't help. Currently have to actually counter steer as the castor is very minimal.

Extra Comments: Very happy with the setup for the money spent. Next steps will be too add as much castor as the factory rods will allow. Will then add a stiffer rear adjustable swaybar for the last practice drift day for the year.

Ultimately it will have:

Adjustable castor arms
Adjustable lower trailing arms
Adjustable panhard rod (watts linkage with adjustable roll centre would be lovely)
Decent front S13 coilovers (Apexi N1 maybe?)
Swap in the front JZA70 Bilsteins into the rear of my car. Will swap appropriate lower bushes when doing this (Already have these).
Fit lock spacers (Already have these)
Maybe fit some Xris modified cut and shut S13 steering arms. My brother just happens to have a set of these:D

Thanx

Extra Comments:only other thing i wil be upgrading is sway bars and bushes all round.

I should add to this, as it has been like 18months since!

LCA's: GH sigma
RCA's (size if you have them): 40mm AJPS

Rear Springs: Standard cut.

Bracing: cusco front strut brace, custom rear strut brace made my me.

Pro's: Handles great, the 7kg/mm springs are perfect for daily and occasional track use.
Con's: The large ammount of negative camber up front can be a burden sometimes though as i have a feeling its making the car understeer a little during hard cornering. The rear could also be stiffer to help for skidding.

Extra Comments: The shortness of the AE92 front inserts allows for massive drops in ride height and the camber looks sick lol :P

my suspensions:

front:

jap 86 calipers with vented slotted discs
6kg springs
sw20 excel G rear shocks, in 86 struts, converted to coilovers
40?mm RCAs
camber tops
strut brace
non powersteering arms
rear

adj panhard
343113 KYB excel G shocks
cut standard springs (so prolly 3-4kg)
stiffer bushes in trailing arms.

positives: good setup, turns in great,
cons: brakes overheat on hard mountain drives, need to get PS arms. shocks arent the best, but they were cheap and do the job.

what pads/fluid you running?

ke70dave
3rd September 2010, 09:53 PM
fluid is whatever i could get from repco in my mad rush to get he car back on teh road. i should probably get some differnet stuff. castrol i think. suggestions?

pads are QFM (?) hpx pads. the ones that are about $90. they are damn grippy once you get a bit of heat into them (and feel not that great first thing in the morning..). but yer last mt nebo drive,on the downhill sections (hairpin after hairpin) lost them towards the end. was probably after 3 or 4 hard stops less than 10secs appart. so i think they did alright..they are only 234mm afterall.

im considering building some brake ducts (using the speed holes in my kamaii lip) dunno how much difference they will make though.

AJPS
3rd September 2010, 10:09 PM
run TRW 600 fluid or similar, then try again.

Otherwise A1rm.

I really push my car and i find the brakes never really fade

But at the end of a long tight downhill section you need a bit more pedal pressure (lifting off the seat :P) but the same retardation is there.

Car: RA65
Car use (e.g grip/drift): Street
Front Struts: Stock, shortened 40mm, weld on sleeve kit
Spring Rate/ Free Height: 8kg/mm, 200mm free height
Inserts (brand/model): KYB Excel-G SW20 rear inserts
LCA's: Stock unmodified
RCA's (size if you have them): N/A
Strut Tops: Cusco camber adjustable pillow ball tops to suit xA6x Celica
Front Sway Bar: Stock
Castor Arms: Stock

Rear Springs: Falcon springs, cut to 280mm free height
Rear Shocks: Stock

Bracing: None, but will be making a strut brace in future

Pro's: Goes alright for how it is at the moment. Much better than the standard setup, anyway.
Con's: Excel-G inserts are rather under-damped for 8kg/mm springs in the front. Back end needs bushes replaced and an alignment as it gets a bit floaty at speed.

Extra Comments: I still need to get a decent wheel alignment, as the "by the eye" alignment I did isn't the best. I will also be replacing/upgrading all of the bushes, swaybars, shocks all around and rear springs when funds permit.

car: Ke70 full stock but in process of modding
use: daily/ want to set up to start drifting
I'm sorting out my suspension set up at the moment, I got a free pair of EL falcon rears and I guess I'll match up to the commadore excel g's.

for the front i got a coil over kit and 86 struts that needs to be cut and welded, the springs with the coil over kit are 8kg/mm so I'm wondering are the excel G's able to handle that well? Just asking because I read somewhere along this thread they can't keep springs captive and couldn't figure out if they can work well with the spring rate. if so which are preferred, ST185 or SW20 excel g's?
was looking at the sw20's AGX rears but they are pretty $$$ for me at the moment so deciding if i should hold out and get those or if the excel g's will be fine.

how important is getting RCA's and how much can i chop off the fal#### springs to still keep it at a 'legal' ride height?

Dylan
7th September 2010, 08:15 PM
If your coilover kit has helper springs, spring captivity will be ok. Its worth spending a bit extra and getting RCAs, you dont really want your car to be bumpsteering after you've gone to the trouble of coilovers, shocks etc. For shocks I know there pretty pricey but Bilsteins will be the last shock you'll buy.

capt. crunch
7th September 2010, 09:26 PM
yeah i saw the bilstein price but as a uni student at the moment i just can't justify that price...

I really just want to know if a set of excel g's can work with 8kg front rates so that i can do it on the cheap for now. Then I can take my time and save some cash and get a decent set up in a year or so.

shift_rook
7th September 2010, 09:38 PM
ecel g's won't really be in their working range with a 8kg spring run a 6kg front spring and reap the rewards, excel g's still probably don't have enough damping forces but it'll feel a shit load better than 8's

capt. crunch
7th September 2010, 10:48 PM
i just got this kit sitting around already with 8kg springs, so i'd rather pay a little extra then for the better shocks than go buy softer springs if im only using them for a short while.

ill-minded
8th September 2010, 01:32 AM
refer to my setup (just before your post) regarding shock inserts.

Excel-G are indeed well underdamped for 8kg springs, but they aren't appalling so to speak (like running with blown shocks). they would be alright for around 4-5kg springs in my opinion, but i'd go for AGX or bilsteins if you can save enough for them. the only reason i got Excel-G inserts was because it was all i could afford at the time and i needed the car back on the road ASAP. it's probably worth mentioning that the front end on an RA65 is a bit heavier than a KE70, which does affect damping characteristics.

also, i run without helper springs and i have about 1" of travel where the springs aren't captive on full droop. i use the standard bump stop as a handy locator for the spring to pop straight back into the upper seat. it's no major concern if the spring seats properly without assistance, but it's still technically defectable and not ideal. also, helper springs aren't cheap :\

Pros: The front end feels a lot better with the Toyota gear back in. S13 gear does work, but feels a little strange at time. There is a lot of lock with the current setup, and it feels very stable when hard under brakes (car will do some sprint days as well). The car slides quite predictably, but I need to practice a lot more:embarassed:

Cons: The excellent setup at the front has highlighted the lack of rear end development. I need springs that seat properly, and some better shocks. I also need to chase up my adjustable rear swaybar I ordered.

i wouldn't ditch the front swaybar only running excel g's in the front, the roll rate would be terrible, one small thing at a time. if it promotes to much understeer it might be worth swapping out both

soften front tyres, run 40 + in rear, youll spin anything, stock front swaybar is the go also

slydar

probably should have mentioned that.

the tires are Hero Fidanza HZ-1s front and rear. the balance is ok, i can make it oversteer, it just doesnt have enough power to actually maintain a drift.

i dont think its my driving at all. i wouldnt say im inexperienced, ive drifted cars with less power also.

its not really surprising. that type of tire ( considered a match for a 595, ive driven both and would say thats pretty accurate) and that soft of a spring rate probably wasnt ever going to work (maybe on dirt), but ive never run springs that soft in my car so i wasnt sure.

i know what to do to make it slide. i was more mentioning it for information for people considering running spring rates that soft. i was just surpised with how much grip it has. some old farts would say thats still kinda over sprung.

turns out they are Bridgestone Potenza Gymkhanas made by KYB, on the shock it says SUS00125 and MD29 KYB

body length of 402mm, not sure where to measure extended length from

Pro's: so easy to drive with this setup for daily, track, touge, and drifting in the wet, have not tried drifting in the dry with this so i wouldn't know, very neutral and forgiving
