I am looking to upgrade my N97 soon, and been looking at new phones.

I have to start out that i am NOT a fan of the iphone for 1 reason...... Apple control it.

I love the hardware.... i love the 3rd party apps.

i hate how apple control everything you do..... (i.e. they decide which apps you can buy, by controling the app store)

I am thinking ill got HTC Desire HD, as early reviews of the new Nokia N8 say symbian is still behind (and it wont have the backing from the apps)

Android seems to be the platform to be with, if you want something that has (and will soon be even) with the apps store of apple.

What are you using, and what are you looking for?

Upgraded to a HTC Desire about 5 weeks ago.

Glad I didn't get an iPhone 4 now :)

Maybe the apps are a little behind the iPhone, but it is still an awesome phone.

My only gripe is that if you're like me and you've been using your (linked) gmail account for 7 or 8 years, the contacts list is a bit stupidly huge. Which makes it hard to use your address book etc.

But yeah, would reccomend a HTC for sure

+1 HTC desire, in fact I'm writing this from it. Just make sure you manage what apps are running with programs such as ' advanced task killer' and your battery will love you, I can almost get 48hrs out of the battery. Great phone though, I'm still not very good at typing on touch screen....but I'm getting better.

^ Every word you wrote is true.

I found a free "quick reboot" app.

Basically is a warm boot for the phone, takes about 30 seconds.

If i've been running any 3rd party apps (like games), I run the quick reboot, and make sure that all the crap processes are killed.

Have been averaging about 28 hours per full charge which is awesome, considering I do a lot of facebooking / AE86DC / gmailing from it...

im looking foward to android 2.2 update for the desire....

damn telstra is a bit slack i think with updates.

just for instance, i pulled it off the charger at 7am yesterday morning, and put it back on the charger at about 11pm last night, and it said 52%.

so i think thats pretty good.

i also have this predicament, ive got an N97, and i hate it, it lags like all fuck, gets pretty damn annoying, was thinking of getting an iphone 4, my mate has one and it seems pretty cool, any pro's cons about the 4?

Hmmm im tossing up between the HTC and iPhone. I just think telstras plans are shit. if you go with virgin 'smartcap' and get the iphone you get unlimited txt messages to any network, free calls to virgin and unused call credit rolls over to nxt months. with telstra its just you get what you pay for.
the only reason im thinking of getting an iphone is because the plans available

yer but on the other hand it depends on how much you actually use.

im on telstra $49, which gives me the phone, $400 of "stuff" to use (sms, phone calls etc), 200mb data (and i got bonus 300mb, some deal at the time) so 500mb total.

last few months ive only used about 150$. im a fairly heavy sms'er, but rarely call, so it works for me. and ive only used like 100mb of the data, as its kinda annoying browsing on the phone, and at work and home i have a computer....so ill just use that if im there. main thing is the google maps i guess, though i dont use that often either....

i dunno what network virgin uses, but i was on "three" before, and i was roaming so often that using the internet was not really an option!

only down side is i have a bunch of crap on the phone that was put there by telstra...and you cant get rid of it unless you crack it. not to bad, just a few annoying programs. but ive got 3rd party ones for most things i use, so it doesnt bother me at all.

for $50 with virgin you get 2gig downloads, $300 a month and unused credit rolls over and free sms's. i think thats the best deal going around so i think im going to settle for the iphone.
if anyone can find a good plan for the HTC desire then could you put it in here as i am not a great fan of the iphone. got myself in a bit of a pickle here

Major pains with the iphone.... (i am not saying that its shit.... just the issues to consider)

1. there are reports the glass breaks on the back.
2. the apps store is controled by apple (android lets you get nudie apps :)
3. there is no "exit" button on iphone apps, so you must always hold the menu button down for 2 secs, then chose which app to exit after leaving it
4. no removable media
5. still only 5mp camera (if thats an issue for you)
6. ill call you a sheep (baaaa)
7. wayyy less customisation of the phone (compared to other OS)
8. everything has to run through itunes

i got the iphone 4 and its great,

to answer the q's ontop of me
no glass has broken for me so far
os 4 all you do is double click menu then you can close apps from there
camera well if your really a fan of photography why not get a dslr or something cool like film? even so hipstamatic app is great
as for OS customisation if your a smart kid there is no limit really, can put android, linux or whatever you like on it.
and unsure what you mean by everything running through itunes ? i dont even have anything in there

The glass doesnt break for eveyone.... but there have been reports that the back of the phone can break....
yes there is an easy fix to close apps, but it takes longer than other phones (its just an annoyance thing, not a default really)
i just like a decent camera in my phone... saves having both.
OS cusotmisation of an iphone is way out of most peoples reach or effort, other phones just do it better is all i was saying.
and the itunes comment means your phone is basically managed via itunues, contacts ect ect. i found its harder to cusomise alot of stuff that way.

Like i said, i am not a iphone hater.... more an apple hater.

i would buy the iphone any day of the week if it was made by someone else.... but it isnt.

plus i want porno apps hahahahahahaha

what ? i didnt get an app to close other apps its OS 4 built in its an update,
as for decent camera on a phone if your really into photography your not going to go out and say your phone cameras decent
as for iphone OS its not hard to do, its like people saying jailbreakings hard, these days you can do it with a slide of 1 finger
