View Full Version : coFF33's GZ11 Soarer - Extra Edition - Old school sexy

Ok story goes like this :

After my dad mentions that there is another soarer exactly like my JZZ20 drift car up in Leeman , which is 4 hours north of Perth, where he lives... i was interested in how anything

1. could not be completely rotted coz Leeman is on the beach
2. could possibly be imported and up there ? coz as i said its beach/desert spec where only Holdens and Fords roam....

So i go take a look, its a MZ11 Extra Edition. The guy tells me the 5MGE over heated once when his wife was en-route up there from Perth and they towed it home.

In their yard was a MASSIVE 89' Turbo JDM landcruiser style thing with chrome everywhere and clear indicators etc etc ,,,, so it was believeable..

anyway... got her on my trailer with my Surf and towed it 5 hours home at 80kph in the middle of summer, attempting not to Blow up my 2LT in my surf.

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/5/4/5/56998.jpg
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/5/4/5/56999.jpg
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/5/4/5/57000.jpg

Then after getting it home and attempting to fix the Blown headgasket 5MGE with some Sealup, i gave up, and found someone selling a 2JZGE which would have been PERFECT , had the sale gone though, which it didnt.

I continued to drive it now n then with the 50psi compression in the 5th cylinder , just coz im impatient.

Then on DRIFTWA.com forums , a car came up for sale that sounded VERY familliar.....
It was "Stomps" from toymods old banged up piece of fucked out shit GZ10 which back in 2005 he bought my old 1GGTE single turbo CT26 off me when i was doing my 1JZGTE conversion on my drift car.

He had installed the 1GGTE into this drift hack/abortion/sad spec GZ10 and made it kinda alright, and apparently whoever he sold it to did all this bullshit to it and fucked it out

some sad pics:

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/5/4/5/57001.jpg
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/5/4/5/57002.jpg

So the kid selling it to me didnt know i knew anything bout toyotas, so he was ranting on about how the motor had a highflow CT26 which is more powerful blah blah, and i was like yeah dude sick ill give you 1K for it COZ ITS BLOWING MASSIVE AMOUNTS OF WHITE SMOKE OUT THE BACK WHEN ITS RUNNING.

So i get it home n shit and check out the turbo, as the motor sounded VERY smooth , just like when i used to own it.

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/5/4/5/57003.jpg

Cool , so the turbos just blown, fuckit who cares, CT26s are easy to come by.
so later that week i found one on www.Z20soarer.org, for $50

i got it, even though it had some fucked out bent fins on the compressor wheel. i just needed something that didnt smoke that i could throw on to pass registration and get it on the road.

cool.

Into the backyard of the Odin Garage we go ...

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/5/4/5/57004.jpg

My girlfriend who (i praise god every day ive found one) is into cars, mainly honda's as shes from NZ, helped me remove the 1GGTE from the GZ10 abortion car and we got it seated on a tyre to clean it up before it goes into the MZ11, as the "pits" here in Perth for rego are real tight asses. One of my mates came over towards the end of the removal, as he just got back from Fly in fly out work and couldnt believe what id found.

After we'd removed the 1GGTE and loom n shit from the GZ10, i called up MattAE86 who always comes to assist me when i know im gonna fuck shit up.
I told him what the plan was and we got underway removing the 5MGE from the MZ11, which was suprizingly simple. and not as hard as the 1G.... anyway

Jerks....

And after a whole day , it was in the bay, and running very loudly through only a dump pipe...

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/5/4/5/57020.jpg

So anyway, after all that was done there was a fair bit of welding to do to the exhaust to make it legal height etc for the car to go over pits and a few other mods here and there interior and electrics wise to have the MZ11 dash running with a 1GGTE in the bay.
This was done with the assistance of Many phonecalls to TRIPTEK, WILBO, ADSPORT and a few others on toymods forums that i know personally.

After a solid week of working on the car to bring it up to what the Registration people would classify as "legal motherfucker" it was ready , and i went to pits...

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/5/4/5/57021.jpg
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/5/4/5/57022.jpg

There was a few dramas with the following:

1. The speedo was out by ~12kph (was showing slower than what i was going)
2. The Diff and gearbox were "noisey"
3. He couldnt find the engine number even though i FUCKING told him where it is ~12 times and he was just being a slack fuck.
4. something else minor that i cant even remember being related. douchebags.

so i went home, Whitesandshoe from Toymods came over with some drive gears to put in the W55 with less teeth to speed the speedo up.
cool

Put some chopped up bananaskins into the gearbox and diff along with thicker oil to make them STFU

and got flurio pink spray paint (the same one as i did the floors of my driftcar with) and put a big massive fucking X on the engine number on the engine so he can "locate" it ....

Scored some semi cheapish Rays Racing mesh from a mate, who he no longer drifted on and just had sitting round.... 15x7 +10 and 15x7.5 -4
rubber = 195/50/R15 all round

it looked nice, seeing as id just copied Johnzoku after hassling him many times on MSN and put in some JIC S13 coilovers in front and edited the springs in the rear whilst adding Camero shocks in the back.

After this i finally fixed the paint

as it was sitting in this dudes yard up north in Leeman for ~3 years , which is approx 5min walk round the corner to the beach, and is always like 40 degrees and sunny.....

anyway, rust wasnt MAJOR, 1 rear wheel arch was completely applecrumble
there was a patch on the roof just above front window , and also a patch on the rear window seal area.

along with the boot, as always , being rusted through where the badges are.

So after a solid 2 - 3 weeks of work on the car with my GF once again helping.... in fact she did around 80% of the sanding and 60 % of the painting whilst i worked on the rust areas ... as they were fucking ANNOYING and u need to use angle grinders and shit on them....

so yer

I then was convinced that , what i was gonna do was yet again retarded. like my when my Z20 drift car was covered in sparkley red vinyl.... im gonna use rollers to paint my car with rustkill gutter paint....

The GF and i researched "how-to's" on the net and came across 2 awesome ones, one for a FC RX7 that was done (which is great coz its square like the Z10) and the other was a porche carrera,

I followed the guide best i could on what to buy etc

i got:

24 hi density foam rollers
4 handle things for hte rollers
1 4L tin of White Knight rust kill FLAME RED paint
1 4L tin of 100% mineral thinners/spirits made by "DIGGERS"
coz we were using orbital sanders to sand each layer off i also bought
Rolls of sandpaper in 250/400/600 grits.

we got under way with a 60/40 paint to spirits mix
this didnt work well, seeing as i KNEW we needed 50/50 but my mate was like nah bro put more paint in... fuck stick

and we pretty much sanded that layer off
then
started doing 50/50 mixes and rolling them on

After 6 coats of paint (maybe it was 7 if u count the first)

and a small lick of White Knight Rust kill Flame red Rattle can for all the edges and bits i couldnt get at with rollers i got this :

So its time now.

To remove Apexi big fat fuck muffler, install 2x 2" or 2.5" pipes out the back. off the current 3" exhaust.

And then install the under tank spoiler which ive got in my garage, along with the lip spoiler once they have paint !

Hey all!

installed the RA60 celica seats into the MZ11
They are so much lower than the original seats, and although not as comfy (read: Worn out)
they provide the much needed side support and lower bum area so i can be held in the seat more than before and also not have my head so close to the roof!

I also got done painting the front chin spoiler and the rear undertank spoiler.

Does ANYONE at all know of a guide or have ANY ideas on how you attach the undertank spoiler ? i can see where it sits thats obvious, but there are no bolts in it and no holes for bolts or anything....

IDEAS PLZ

was kinda annoying to fit, as i had to chop the very tips off it to make it slip on easyer
bolted on with 2 mm nut & bolts on each end

has withstood 110kph freeway action so its fine :D

New pics !!!

Went down to the workshop and did some new exhaust action !!!

removal of the Giant 1984/1985 Apexi muffler was a hassle as it was so heavy and massive.

once complete Adsport skills came out

haha ! thanks guys!

Bad news tho!

This weekend me and my GF holly drove down to collie raceway (3hours south of perth) and enroute, there is a MASSIVE hill , like, takes ~10 mins to get up it and youd go in say high rpm 3rd or 4th to get up it in any car.

Anyway we were convoying, me driving my JZZ20 drift car and her driving this MZ11...... all of a sudden she drops back heaps off the convoy , so i slow down to ask her whats wrong, she yells out the car has no power ?

I asked her to put it in third and attempt to make boost. she did so and it was fine.

Got to the racetrack and the car was sounding horrible. Like missing BADLY and sounding like a really really lumpy SR20 or something ... like dirty as.

Adsport and me checked out the plugs/dizzy etc. and couldnt find an issue. I didnt care at this point as we were down for 2 days of drift ... so thats what was gonna go on. the car still ran, although shit, we could still get home.

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/5/4/5/57064.jpg

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/5/4/5/57069.jpg

I got home after an awful drive home , i got Holly to drive the JZZ20 and i drove the MZ11 to be sure it was drivin' with care and was able to make the 3 hour drive home at 110kph with a miss/ unknowen issue.

Got home, the next day i found that CYL 3 in the 1GGTE was FULL of oil. and was completely missing.

So looks like i have below 100psi pressure in Cyl 3 and a busted piston or oil ring.

Then again this engine has done around 290,000kms, its drivin me accross australia in late 2006, was sold to a friend who fucked with it bigtime with SAFC's and hi flowed CT26's then sold to another guy who molested it and attempted to drift it , in which it caught on fire and melted some shit.

then coming back to me to die.

Im happy to let it go now, its going to toyota/yamaha heaven.

This week i purchased another 1GGTE from KYP in Perth here.

so this weekend Holly , myself and a few others will be replacing the engine. and hopefully having it running by monday.

pics soon

sup yo!!!

All done !

The engine i bought from KYP was the first Gen1 1GGTE ive ever seen in real life.
with a Water to Air intercooler mounted on top, and all the weird pipes etc to flow water to it. Along with Gen1 Yellow/Grey injectors and the oldschool looking intake plenum etc.

As the 1G was front sump , im assuming it came out of a Mark II / Chaser GX71 just before they started making the GX81.

We removed cam covers and sump to checkout how fucked parts were as it looked like it had been sitting for a solid 5 - 6 years in the back corner of KYP.

We found the cams COATED in chunky black soot/Carbon due to the oil in the sump evaping or something causing mass blockages in the oil squirters (to the cams ) and oil drain (from the cams)

cleaned all that out best we could then had a look at the sump

Inside the sump was the same black chunky carbon buildup , similar to what youd find in the catch dish from a BBQ after youve cooked like 20 steaks on it. :(

None the less, a whole lotta cleaning and dismantling on friday night we managed to get it into a state in which it "might" run well after sitting for 6 years lol

anyway

In one day Adsport + Myself + my mate jay + My GF Holly all helping remove the engine

Adsport removed loom, throttle body injectors etc... and slumped it over the fender/windscreen

we removed the engine and gearbox all as one.

Whilst out , swapped over the CT26 + mani + intake + injectors + throttlebody + engine mounts + dump etc

all to the Gen2 engine

So the ECU (Gen 3) should run true with the Green Gen 3 injectors etc...

started it saturday night

Drove it on sunday out the garage and down teh street , babying it best i could, as the CT26 doesnt come on boost till ~3.2k rpm anyway , so i didnt apply positive pressure to the engine but i will once its had some warm ups and cool downs .

The only thing we didnt swap over during the conversion was the Exceedy clutch from the old engine, as there was already a clutch on the engine which had around 50% left,

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/5/4/5/57078.jpg

basically, driving round i find that the temp gauge on the dash moves up to half way (correct temp) and my after market gauge (saber good qual) does not move at all.

Now, after ~5 - 10 mins of driving, all of a sudden my temp after market gauge shoots up to 70 degrees / 80 degrees

at this point i turn the AU falcon fans on (crazy awesome) and leave them on till i turn the car off when i arrive at my destination.

This keeps the temp at 85->90 depending on my driving.

This worrys me as my drift car with a S13 alloy and AU thermos sits at 60 degrees if i leave the thermos on whilst driving, no matter what the outside air temp is.

Another issue, is that even when at temp (middle on dash) and around 82 - 85 on the Saber gauge.... my dash temp ocasionally pops up 1 bar above the centre normal temp. sits there for about 40sec - 1 min and then pops back down to normal middle temp.

i dont know if this is due to the dash being for a 5MGE read out and is instead connected to a 1GGTE sensor on the thermostat housing. or if i have an issue?

so i invested in a 4AGE thermostat 82'deg.

and im gonna pop that in over the weekend and bleed the system for a solid 30 mins till i KNOW FOR SURE there are no air bubbles in it. and test for the next week,.

Anyway heres some pics:

Got the 15x10s on yesterday, managed to "flame on" some 195/60/R15 .... Matt said to go 205/65 , but i need that extra bit of stretch to get the tread to sit under the flare arch ....

Bit mexican , and because my fender arches arnt in the best condition.. ie. bit of rust n bog. i cant smash them out to flare them over. so MattAE86's idea is looking to be the go (KE70 front arches welded on) or else some small fibreglass bolt ons from japan ... Illminded/Johnzoku , if you guys spot any smaller than 50mm/60mm 240z ones.. let me know!

So this is the 2nd fender, Matt and i worked on it for only around 3 hours to get it done. i havent got any pics yet of what it looks like right now as im still getting the bog smooth and it looks a tad dodgy with the current bogged join.

Anyway:

My 15x8 -4 superlites from AJPS arrived yesterday, after 5 weeks wait.

They are great!
i threw on the 195's and put em on the car. looks so good without miss matched rims. im pretty stoked.

also drives a lot nicer with 55 profile rather than 50, although the "Stretch" isnt as "cool" but im not gonna put 185/60 as they would look like balloons.

Now to continue work on the rear flares.

OK pics:
sorry, they have to be shitty nokia pics from the basement at work.
and yes, i realize i need to lower the rear around 1" maybe 1.5"

Looks shiney as hell, never loses its reflection, very hard wearing, it cost around $220 - 300 and about 5 days work after work each day. with the GF's help.
99% of people who see it will say wow man thats pretty good for a home spray job. and when i tell them ti was $220 with rustkill gutter paint they are like :o

But yer... worth it i say....

when i rip the vinyl off my driftcar im gonna be painting it using the same method
