Decided I need a new project to sink my teeth into. And, unlike my corona, I could get this up to the house to work on.

Picked it up on the weekend, someones abandoned project, it isn't running and needs significant electrical work.

Basically it didn't come with the ECU which was some standalone one from America (can't remember brand name).

The engine appears to be set-up to not use signals from the MAP/AFM (I have no idea which series it is, how do I tell?). And has a custom loom.

From my limited knowledge of auto electronics, I'm about 99% sure it doesn't need a standalone ECU and just used to have one for the cool factor - so I shall probably just source a standard ecu and loom once i find out which series it is.

It does come with some cool things like -

Mod plates for the engine and 2seeter capacity half cage and harnesses :D

RPM harnesses.

Unknown semi-bucket seats.

Unknown bolt in half cage.

Some shonky looking immobiliser setup.

Unknown front struts with vented discs and bigger calipers.

Unknown but not stock springs and shocks all round, not stiff but not sloppy either.

Big ass swaybars all round, possibly pedders brand.

Unknown Japanese series diff with floating discs. Haven't looked at the center yet.

Custom pearl red paintjob, looks very fresh and some very nice body work has been done.

So, one step at a time, just need to get it running. Might consider selling the cage if someone is interested, I don't plan on rolling it any time soon.

Here's some pics

Anyone on here wired up a KE70 4AGZE before?
My experience is limited, but I'm a mostly self taught person so now is the time to learn :D

that wiring is absolutely TERRIBLE, the person who did that should be shot.

Get an aftermarket ecu and get rid of that loom altogether.

lol so did i, because that thing really was the biggest piece of shit ever... but its some time ago, forgive and forget you know, all that stuff

i will be chasing stock ecu and loom, i dont think there is anything to be gained from aftermarket. unless im very mistaken.

to assist in future wiring - this is a steep learning curve, i've never really looked at a wiring schematic before today.

Get a haltech with a flying loom and just wire it from scratch. Slide86 is right when he says that it's a mess. Good to see you back into rolla ownership.

keiichi
7th December 2010, 05:08 PM
yeh its definitely a mess no doubt about that - but why aftermarket ecu? it is stock.

stahlz_ae86
7th December 2010, 05:11 PM
You plan on leaving it completely stock?

keiichi
7th December 2010, 05:23 PM
You plan on leaving it completely stock?

pretty much - it has a pod filter, extractors, nice 2 1/2 under-diff exhaust and r33 intercooler - these kind of mods will keep me happy. i dont need to change the SC, go turbo, or whatever else you do to warrant needing an aftermarket ecu.

keiichi
7th December 2010, 05:25 PM
on another note though - where would a pick up a tuneable ecu (pref second hand maybe) and what exactly is a flying loom? to get it tuned it would need to be taken to a shop before i could even get it running yeh - or could someone learn such a thing? also, i dont want to fork out thousands so i can have "tuneability".

sweet car man. where you living these days?

should be a cool car once its running

keiichi
7th December 2010, 06:33 PM
cheers yeh im pretty excited about it, should be good fun once its on the road. wish i was back in melbourne for this, we could get it running in an afternoon no doubt :P

im back up hometown way which is in the byron/tweed shire/country side. halfway between byron bay and the gold coast. very layed back area, loving it.

one of the benefits of a new ECU will mean that once you have it done, you can move on and forget about it. plus (as you probably know) you can tune it with about an extra 5-10 kws if it isn't on lame factory tuning etc.
but i would just do it for piece of mind.

keiichi
7th December 2010, 07:00 PM
sounds very logical, and i could use alot of the relays and all the setup that's already in there etc.

and tbh, i don't know if things like the injectors are stock.

i wouldn't know where to start - tuning an ecu doesn't seem like something you can do from home. unless it is! then i would force myself to learn............ i cant really take this car to a shop let alone want to.

my mate has a haltech and a little laptop in his glovebox to tune on the go when needed to ;) only cost him 2K including laptop

stahlz_ae86
7th December 2010, 07:22 PM
Aftermarket is most logical,

If you run the loom you will know what goes where and what it does, from scratch.
You will be able to adjust the tune any time you do any upgrades, like just changing the injectors for example
You will be able to get better power with less mods just by tune
You will be able to plug the laptop in and tune it on the street while driving it under the loads it will be dealing with day to day
You should be able to have two maps for seperate driving settings I'm pretty sure my Haltech has that feature (haven't installed it into a car yet) so you can have a reliable and economical low boost map and a more performance based tune at the flick of a switch (someone may be able to explain that one properly, I'm just relaying info there that I've been told)

I bought my Haltech E8 from fatke on here and I'm pretty sure he bought it from wideslider. To give you an idea of price I payed 1K for mine, but PM wideslider to ask if he can get them still. Can't wait to build my engine and wire the loom up, will be a fun learning experience, I'm going with a de-comp'd/turbo smallport build, with larger ports, blacktop quad throttles in sealed plenum, bigger injectors, individual coil pack setup etc... so aftermarket is a must for my planned setup.

keiichi
7th December 2010, 07:27 PM
sounds like quite a project :)
was the haltech e8 kit new, and what did it come with?

stahlz_ae86
7th December 2010, 07:31 PM
yeah new ecu, he had a patch loom to hook up to his SR20 loom but he never used it, I made sure he organised the flying loom for me before I bought it. So I got ECU, flying loom, discs for the computer and some other fuses

this seem like a good deal? http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=290505610944&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT don't bid on it I got dibs! :D

i'm very persuaded by the aftermarket ecu approach now - the wiring isnt as bad as it looks, set up a battery today, everything else works. ive been reading up on how for the last 6hrs or so and i think i can do it, just need to chose an easy to use ecu since im a noob.

did a compression test too - got 135psi across the board! pretty happy with that. seems high for an engine that came with 8:1 originally.

Don't know about megasquirt. Don't know anyone who's used it so I've heard neither good reviews or complaints. I bought my Haltech E8 under instruction from my cousin who's a performance mechanic, he will be doing my initial tuning after I set it up. He did the Haltech E6K? (he jokes about it as being the version where pacman comes accross the screen) install on my other cousins 3TGTE, and even the older Haltech stuff is good, just not as user friendly apparently. Maybe have a hunt around and see what people who've used megaquirt on 4A-GZE have said before committing to purchase.

keiichi
8th December 2010, 06:15 PM
megasquirt's from what i understand are very blank but have a huge faq and forum guide etc etc making it a great learning tool too. its the ecu you get if you want to learn to tune.

Ive just finished my 4agze conversion in my 86, though its back off the road due to gbox issues.
But i went with a Microtech ecu, bought brand new for $1200 - included the ecu, hand controller and x4 igniter which is needed for coilpacks.
it was relatively easy to wire up, all the wires are labeled and just need the plugs connected on, with being bought brand new it has a 4agze base tune which mine ran pretty awesome for a non tuned car, easy enough to drive around any day of the week ( although i wouldnt drive to much with an untuned motor ).
If you do decide to look into Microtech a would ring them up as they will do you a better deal with pricing compared to there prices which are on there website.
Also if you had any questions i could help you out.

keiichi
7th January 2011, 01:01 AM
nice.
does your SC run constantly?

86TRD
7th January 2011, 02:22 AM
Nah, apparently they dont like to be "on" constantly, the sc only has 2 wires, one being an earth and the other power which is wired into one of the aux from the microtech, which you can tune to have the sc to kick in from what ever rpm you set.

keiichi
7th January 2011, 11:08 AM
ah ok cool, i was wondering about that.... looks like the previous owner may of had the sc on constant power.

joeschmo_57
8th January 2011, 07:43 PM
wow. the microtech sounds awesome, actually. i was wondering what one i should go for when i do a warm smallport. (quads/compression/cams). would you recomend a micro for it?

sorry to h/j the thread

lol no worries, nothing going on here anyway :P

got loom, ecu and coilpacks etc on the way and some 15x8 -4 superlights off biggo tomorrow by the looks of it but thats about it, should be running soon.

keiichi
13th January 2011, 04:11 PM
small update.

superlights!

15x8 -4, pokes out of the rolled guards :o i'm used to coronas where the guards sit a meter from the wheels as standard.

also, this might be running next week :D fingers crossed.

however, it is pretty wintastic as it is!

keiichi
14th January 2011, 12:44 AM
awesome thanks ^_^

i have been feeling a little bit despondent about this car as of late actually, as i have discovered i can't get it registered here in NSW unless i go full engineers again (like 1.5k)... so, need to get it registered in qld somehow. probably moving there anyway.
was planning on selling this on to someone in QLD after getting it running schmick , and just getting a silvia but meh, this thing would be perfect for what i want (i think?). a streetable drifter that i can drive around in without being harassed. are ke70's targets up at the goldy and brissy yet?

for those of you in qld, whats it like getting a car registered up there? are they very strict? think this could pass? it is legal height, mod plated for engine and seating capacity - so i assume something to do with harnesses and cage as there is a reference code on the plate... the mod plates themselves are very unspecific - has a proper muffler.

keiichi
14th January 2011, 12:48 AM
also yeh, MKII's would be sweet but i really like the superlights tbh, look good and appear very strong... maybe not as light as SSRs but shouldn't collapse if hit the wrong way. also more easily replaceable if one does get raped.

TOOK THIS FOR A DRIVE TODAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! so many days of work arghhhh feels good, still more work to do - and im starting UNI in brisbane in like a couple weeks >.< WTB time.

but damn this thing is fast, like ow my balls fast, like im really really surprised. good times.

also, need new thermostat, common for this engine?

looks like it's got potential , whats been happening any way since you moved up there?

lol i know right... hey sam how you doin :P

as far as happenings go, been working as landscaper and more recently last few months been doing some work on the old folks farm, landscaping stuff... and working on the car in between.

it didn't really seem like much to do when i got the rolla, but so many hours have gone in. it came as a car with no wheels, hadn't been run for 10 years apparently and a wiring nightmare... gone through everything, even took apart the brakes completely to their individual parts to make sure its all good, completely rewired the engine loom.

its running on coil-pack loom now not dizzy. had to roll with aftermarket gauges though, got saas tacho, oil pressure, and water temp. got some solex locks and an adjustable temp switch for the fan coming in the mail.

sam do you know how work out what your compression ratio is by comp testing with a gauge? we tested it 135 psi across the boards, seems too high for stock internals... my old rona was 80-90 psi give or take and it was maybe a bit worn but not fucked... was told that is pretty normal.. ZE and RE have about the same comp ratio.

stanzzza
13th February 2011, 10:11 PM
80psi is low bro.

to do a proper comp test, you gotta have the engine at operating temps, have all the plugs out and have trottal wide open.

if it comes up low on a dry test drop some oil down the bore and try again , most cases it'll come up higher but if it brings it back from like stupidly low to decent pressure you got a decent chance your got a "worn engine"

it'll give you something to go off by it aint Gospel

cr x 14.7 = psi
psi /14.7 = cr

ruff yeh, thats at prime micky condition with fark all leak down . different altitude's and crap it'll variate , There no real way unless you tear the head off and measure deck height and squash pad area .

I think ! it's been a while

Nikkojoe
13th February 2011, 10:34 PM
135psi on a stock bigport gze is at the lower end of the scale. My rebuilt bigport gze (about 50,000km) was 150-155psi across all 4. That said, if it aint burning oil I wouldn't be too concerned.

Good to see you got it all driving now :)

well done man!

keiichi

nice sam thanks! good info... so, on a dry test, my engine has a comp of 9.2... admittedly i tested it while it was cold and hadn't been run in ages with only one cylinder open.

so, judging by what nikko says aswell, sounds like its all sweet :)

i didnt use the senders that came with the oil pressure and water temp gauges though and so the oil pressure reads inverted as in the lower it reads the higher and the temp gauge is about 30degress in advance, reads about 50degrees at cold and about 120 at operating temp >.<

anyone know a 'lenient' mechanic in queensland that will roadworthy this? :D
it will be ready to roll on wednesday (window guy coming out), so many days of work, really keen to get this on road but so little time to stuff around now, moved to brissy, started uni, need car! if anyone can help out/point in right direction, i would be very grateful!
