View Full Version : 4AGE dies under 3000 rpm

Having problems with JDM 4AGE big port in AE86. Engine and ECU are from AA163 Celica as far as I know. Has been running fine since I fitted it back in 2005. Used as daily drive and track car.

It has suddenly started spluttering when getting back on the throttle after lifting off, like when going through a round-about.

Then it's impossible to get it off the line at less than 3000 rpm. Have to bring the revs up slowly or it dies.

Fuel delivery is from Facet pump outside tank, VL pump in engine bay, both new.

Code from ECU is 9, speed sensor - but this has always been there - no other codes.

Any suggestions?

Faulty TPS sensor

I should add that it only happens once the engine is fully warmed after a 20km drive.

does it start up as normal, as in it's not a timing issue?

Thanks guys for your suggestions.

Starts up fine and runs normally until hot. Timing OK.

Faulty TPS sensor

Looks like you're right trikzlane. Appears to be a TPS problem. Voltage at ECU and TPS terminals has intermitent blips instead of smooth change. Checking resistance at TPS terminals confirms intermitent open circuit at more than 1 point.

Temp sensor and MAP sensor seem OK.

Where is best place to get new TPS?

Engine is a JDM 4AGE.

you could try your local toyota dealership, i was lucky and got one new. only problem it was $200!

another option is to change the whole throttle body as to use another TPS as they are not all interchangeable.

i believe the part number you have quoted may also be found on a 22re out of a hilux...

Thanks timbo,

Have purchased the TPS from eBay.

Will let you know how that goes.

Problem solved - was a clogged fuel return line from injector rail to tank. Engine was flooding.

This was after I replaced a bunch of sensors that had no effect :-(

Thanks guys for your help.
