So, after much anticipation, this is my R31. Finally registered! Woo!

Bought for cheeeaapp last November from a lovely elderly lady who owned it from new with 159XXX k's on the odometer, it's really quite mint. Interior is nearly flawless, engine bay looks new, paint is good apart from the scratches on the bumper, gearbox is tight as, suspension feels nice. The only downside is hail damage that happened only a short time ago.
When I first got it..

Plans are to keep it simple as it is my daily and my first decent car, and add things when I feel they need to be done.
Mod's list...
Engine:
Recon'd injectors.
2.25" Cat back mandrel bent exhaust, gutted cat.
Drivetrain:
Stock!
Suspension:

Dodgy pioneer cd player with 6" speakers.
hanggriinnggg.
Blue 150mm dildo.
Blue beacon light.
Exterior:
Dodgy decal strips removed.

Fronts, 15x7 +10 SSR formula mesh with 10mm spacers.

To be honest plans sound quite gay.
I'm sorry you feel that way. It's an R31 though, R31's are gay to start with.

I had it on facebook, then got spooked and took it down. Will edit post later on with youtube link. It's only on my FRIEND'S PRIVATE DRIVEWAY anyway :)
You can be my facebook friend if you want though ;)

That one is pretty cool. I think my wheels will poke a little more, and mine will be a lot lower with decent profile tires.
I NEEDD A JOBBBB. Once I have a source of income this will get coilovers and a spool, then i'll be happy with it. SO SICK OF OPEN DIFF AND SHOCKING RIDE HIGHT.

joeschmo_57
28th January 2011, 08:45 PM
it is my first decent car

i feel like i should be pulling you up there...

nah, sounds cool. maybe put an RB20 in it instead of throwing money at the 30?

Pidgey
29th January 2011, 12:13 AM
HA, I know right. Should read "first slidable car". This is only for me to learn in.
Not keen on a 20, 30's are cheap and plentiful and I'm quite good friends with a person that will do my head for cheap.

Just came back from a relaxed run at my local spot, holy fuck it felt good just to drive touge again.
For a stock car with open diff I was pretty surprised at how well it performed.
Got shit scared though, was on my way home and got followed by cops, didn't pull me up or anything, just hope they didn't take any notice.
NEED COILOVERS AND SPOOL.

Jdm-Mcc
29th January 2011, 10:57 AM
Sounds mad, wish my town had a local spot :(

Still got the dwifthatsu bro? Ive got 5 13x7 jellybeans in the mazda 110 stud pattern!

Pidgey
29th January 2011, 01:30 PM
Such a good spot. Definitely not hitting it up again on a friday night though.
I do :) it's sitting in my garage back home, waiting for when I have enough money to put a busa engine in it and IRS the rear. I want to make it a hillclimb car.
13x7's would poke like 2 inches!!

Jdm-Mcc
29th January 2011, 01:45 PM
Put some bolt on's on!

Pidgey
29th January 2011, 04:39 PM
That would actually be cool! Not bolt on's, just like, KE70 front guards or something welded on and molded.
Want to wait till I have decent money first though, and will probably go MK2's :)

Pidgey
29th January 2011, 05:18 PM
OH. I'm taking apart my rims soon.
Thinking on whether or not I should go black centers?

joeschmo_57
29th January 2011, 06:06 PM
give the cliche 'drifter' black centers a miss. It will make it look less clean. my opinion though

Pidgey
30th January 2011, 10:32 AM
Mm, I understand that hey. Will look a lot cleaner just polished.

OH YEAH, this died last night.
Pulled out of a corner after picking up a friend, opened it up a little, then it just stuttered and coughed and wouldn't rev over like 2.5k. Sounded like the timing was really really retarded or something.
Tried to limp home but kind of got worse so just pulled over and rang a friend to pick us up. PRETTY FUCKING ANNOYED!
Will check ECU codes, but my bet is on the CAS? Any ideas?

racsov
30th January 2011, 11:20 AM
sounds like afm mang. start it with it unplugged, then plugged in then unplug it and see if theres any difference. if you have it on a pod with a bracket or somethign it could have just popped out, mine does it every now and then.

if the cas is dodgy it wont start at all or will cut out completely.

Pidgey
30th January 2011, 11:26 AM
True? Thanks man, will try that. AFM and CAS are on the same circuit too yeah?
Also read that it could be oxygen sensor in the exhaust coming loose or something, which may be a possibility because I smashed my exhaust on a friends driveway like a couple seconds before.

Jdm-Mcc
30th January 2011, 11:45 AM
The AFM is a pretty common one with the old rb30e, seen it happen to a few 31's/vellllllllllllllls brew

Pidgey
30th January 2011, 12:24 PM
WHAT THE FUUUUUUUUUUUCK.
Went with a mate to tow it home today, tried turning it over, fired up just fine?
FUU. Hoping it doesn't happen again.

Pidgey
31st January 2011, 10:18 AM
I don't now. Got home fine, went in to get a drink etc, went out to start it again, acting gay!
It seems it only does it when it's warm?
I have also found that my number one injector leaks quite a bit. which may answer some questions... May have happened friday night.
Will tinker with it today, and/or throw it off a cliff -_-

Pidgey
31st January 2011, 12:08 PM
Ok, so fixed injector.
Did what racsov said, unplugged afm while running and it did the exact thing. So my AFM is dodge?
Eh, it runs ok now I think. Will take it for a drive until it gets warm to see how it reacts.

Pidgey
31st January 2011, 02:15 PM
So it's not the AFM.
Just bought another from the wreckers, went better i think? But did the same thing, got to about 3.5K and started missing and wouldn't rev any further.
FUUUUCKKK.

Pidgey
31st January 2011, 03:35 PM

So the PCV line that runs from the rocker cover to the manifold was perished, and it was putting oil all over my rocker cover. I would just put a new line in but the outlet on the rocker cover is 3/8th's and the outlet on the manifold is 5/8th's, so I couldn't get just one line for it.
To solve this I had to put a catch can in. I don't really like it, but it solves the problem.
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/3/3/3/6/61937.jpg
Will try to put it lower in the bay one day but for now it works fine. It's not like i'll be showing off the bay anyway.
Also put new plug leads in! Runs way smoother now.

Thinking I might space my bonnet up, just because i'm cool.

Ok so i'm having a bit of a crisis with this thing, mostly after talking to JDM-MCC about how simplicity is bawwss.
The plan was always to run S13 coilovers all round. I would buy them new, which for BC's is something like $1300. I'd also have to get S13 brakes and hubs and LCA's and shiz, and they all go for around $250ish. So that's $1550 assuming I don't have to rebuild the calipers and get new pads.
Being a uni student i don't really have that money to throw into a car, and apart from better brakes and adjustability there is no real gain over the conventional spring and shock.
Using decent shock inserts all round (koni reds, KYB etc), Custom made 8 and 6kg springs (AJPS??), and some second hand S13 camber tops, I'd spend roughly around $800 (half that of coilovers) and i'd still have an adjustable setup. With some good brake pads and fluid the brakes would be bearable too.
So if i went that way i'd be saving myself some decent dollars.
What are some other opinions of this??
OH ALSO, if I did get defected i could just put my original springs in, rather than changing whole struts... Which is pretty much just as hard. BUT STILL...

willa
2nd March 2011, 05:05 PM
It is a pickle, and im in a similar boat as i want coilys for my daily n/a '13, but if my e7 slider doesnt have them then how can i justify it for a car i essentially love less? Haha na i guess thats bit offtopic at best.

The best answer is to consider what those spare dollars can buy, ie more sussy parts, more power... And then decide whether you can wait the extra saving time to get them as you will buy a heap of things eventually, though the cheaper they all are the sooner you will have them.
That or shop around for some decent second hand tein/cusco/hsd/similar coilys, you usually would save 5-6 hungey from the price you listed for new bc's.

Hope i havent made it any harder for you anyway haha,

Will.

racsov

dude just buy coilovers. warranty and you can adjust the height t the exact mm you want.

So this weekend past was pretty eventful.
Went back to my hometown (about an hour away) to catch up with friends etc.
Sunday was spent stripping down and masking a friend's B310 sunny, and playing with what we will do to it.
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/3/3/3/6/64618.jpg
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/3/3/3/6/64619.jpg
Pretty clean and straight car really, with the exeption of a small amount of rust near the tail lights.
The A12 will be rebuilt with a large cam and touched up head, 11:1 compression and a single 40mm side draft. Later on it will be replaced by an NA CA18.
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/3/3/3/6/64620.jpg
New ride hight. Springs are from the rear of a VR wagon, pretty much cut in half. sits at around 110mm at the trailing arm mounts. Will be awesome with MA61 wheels!
Sunday night was at a friend's playing COD and blowing stuff up. Went to leave his with another friend behind me, decided to try to show off. on releasing the clutch the car lurched forward a bit and then made a massive bang and then a horrible loud crunching sound. Car would not move. FUUUUUUUUUUU
Had a friend release the clutch slowly in first while i was lying beside the car to see where the sound was coming from. Tailshaft was spinning out of the gearbox, but not at the diff, so that meant the CV in the middle died. Towed it back to a friend's place and slept there. Took out the tailshaft to see what was going on and the join was actually just a CV.
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/3/3/3/6/64621.jpg
Took apart the CV to find this
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/3/3/3/6/64622.jpg
Those peices of metal are supposed to be one peice. It acts like a cage for the bearings to sit in and hold them between the two gear things.
Went to a bearing shop, asked if they had anything, they said the CV comes as a whole unit and went for $250. FUUUUUUUUU
After some quick thinking decided to go to the wreckers to find another tailshaft. There were no manual sedan tailshafts so I decided to buy an auto tailshaft for $30 and get it's cage thing.
After about an hour of trying to knock the cv off the actual spline it finally came off. Took out the cage and put back my CV together, which took another 20 minutes due to the complicated nature of a CV.
Put it in, slapped the tailshaft back in the car, done. For $220 less than I could have paid, or something like $600 for a mechanic to do it.
So yeah. Never am I ever playing with CV's again, or doing hektik statics. EVER.

Finally getting some decent money now, so stuff should start happening in within the next month.
May get tyres put on my rims next week, what are some good 195/55's? I'm thinking toyo proxes?
Will probably run some ghey rubber on the back, what are some decent skidder type 195/55's?

With regards to suspension i've decided i'll just go second hand S13 coilovers and S13 front. It'll be right.
Still toying with the idea of painting my rims black.. IDK. It will look less clean but I'm thinking of going with black rims, black grill, and possibly some tyre lettering?
Might look cool I think ^.^

12th March 2011, 08:18 PM
Bought some extractors from Marv today, they look pretty cool! Bit beaten up but they'll be fine. 6-2-1 so hopefully they'll give me some more top end to play with. Right now I have heaps of low and mid-range but past 5 it's fairly breathless.

This should be looking pretty different by next sunday hopefully.

-rims painted.
-guards lipped.
-tires on wheels.
-extractors on.
-Wheels on.

Deciding wether or not to run cut springs until I get S13 setup. Hmmmmm.

So yeah, had a big sunday session on this.
Car is now around 65mm from the chassis rails, this is only temporary though until I get coilovers. As it is it scrapes on absolutely everything. Will most likely get beached at uni and work lol.
Pretty happy with fitment on the rear, guards are lipped and there is about 2mm of clearance between guard and tire. Will smack guards out a bit more and put 10mm spacers on.
Front will look nice with more track from S13 LCA's, atm they're nearly flush with guards.
Pictures maybe this afternoon.

On Another note mate, HSD's are on sale man for all s-chassis, I think they're ~$1300 until April.

Do want HSD's. Will see how my tax goes, apparently i have a fair bit.
Pics may be a while away, uni is getting hectic and i hardly have spare time for anything.
Yeah this is just fucking stupid low. I think another 10mm higher in the back and 5mm in the front and it will be better.
The exhaust does the best version of an angle grinder when i hit bumps on the highway. spppaaaarrrkkss aaahhoooyy.
But yesh, S13 LCA's should bring the front out a bit, along with some 10mm spacers on the rear, and the above mentioned hight and i'll be a happy boy.

Put my superglory sticker on, I look heaps more drift now when I drive to uni and work.
Also put spacers on the back, had to take to the guards with a sledgehammer to stop it from scrubbing. Paint is falling off the guards now making it look more sketchy :(
Oh well, they'll be completely redone when I fit 9's on the rear.
No pictures, it looks so ratty I don't think I've washed it since I got it lol. The rear bumper and all of the dents stick out heaps and it just looks like shit, but eh, it's an R31, what are you gonna do.
Spool should be here next week, get my tax back next week also so should have coilovers really really soon!
Which is good because I'm losing love for this thing fast.

30th May 2011, 05:23 PM
weld the diff

Jacobxxx
30th May 2011, 05:40 PM
fuck welding a 31 diff when a mini spool is like $100 or so and it works a million times better, no expanded metal bits and no chance of welds breaking.

randomskate
30th May 2011, 06:22 PM
$0 is cheaper lol, I would weld it if i was you because I'm a hectic pov kent but well if you've spent all this money on it so far on rims, injectors etc then you may as well do it properly with a mini spool :)

Pidgey
30th May 2011, 06:26 PM
Fuck welding when I can buy a spool for like $90 shipped.
IDK about widened steelies, I think I will just sell my wheels and run on stockies until I have enough money to buy proper wheels.

Long time no update.
Car still gets driven every day. My locker decided to chew itself into an open diff, so that's pretty gay.
BUT.
I get my tax back tomorrow so will order spool and coilovers, then hopefully next weekend I'll put them in.

Is a locker that much better than say, a 2-way LSD?

Pidgey
13th July 2011, 10:14 PM
I like lockers, they're not as bad as everyone thinks. Like, the car is my daily and I have to park in crowded carparks every day for work and uni and it's really not THAT annoying. Plus, when my tyres skip everyone looks at me and knows I'm a hektik dwifter and I feel pretty cool.
I've never driven a car with a 2-way before so I wouldn't know what they're like. And no, I'm not going to buy one for this car. Too exxy.

Probably selling this as soon as I get a roady for it.
Has developed the most god awful exhaust leak so is FUCKOFF LOUD, and also leaks like 3L of water a day from what I think is a welsch plug as it's coming from the exhaust side?
I don't know. I'm over it, most unreliable and shithouse car I've ever owned.

Doing waterpump and timing belt today, also spoke to beally about fixing my exhaust :)
When my wheels sell I'll buy coilovers and S13 stuff, I think this is the only reason why I hate it so much, along with the fact that it breaks like every two weeks haha, that's dwift cars for you. Will run on stockies until I can get some steelies and then widen to 8.5 and 9's, then I'll fall in love again.

Riiicchhieee! haha yeah I have to park in officeworks for work because I can't get over the speedbumps at the plaza.
I think I've seen that R31, isn't me but it's not too bad, I think the guy usually has drifteks on it =/
We need to get blind together soon man, give us a text some time!

14's are the ghey on R31's, maybe on a zokyusha with massive custom guards but that would be kinda odd on an Australian car.
Should be selling this very soon with roady and rego until february minus rims to make way for something spesh, not telling what it is though :)

Well at the moment I have the choice of a triton 2.6l stylside ute for 1000, this rusty but good kesev for free, a twin headlight sigma for maybe 1500, or possibly blairs t18 for 1200. Opinions?

joeschmo_57

t18

KurtHS
30th July 2011, 08:53 PM
Sigma, easier to setup, doesn't need an engine conversion, quicker to get skiddable, can look baller, unique.

Jdm-Mcc
30th July 2011, 09:01 PM
Sigma, today I also learnt that you dont need hq rear springs at all, just the rear springs and shocks out of the tp magna wagon, zing!

Pidgey
30th July 2011, 09:03 PM
I so want twin light Sig. Friend has a 76 lancer with a worked triton 2.6 goes so hard. What sussy goes in them? Coilovers?

Jdm-Mcc
31st July 2011, 09:46 AM
Considering people use s13 gear in corollas and the like, and you can put sigma lcas into corollas then s13 coilovers should work?

We'll see what happens.Need to hurry up and look at this corolla, then male a judgement on wether its too rusty or not. If it doesn't happen I will be buying Blair's T18.Benzo, your plan will be what's happening. Plus MA61's and 185/55.

Putting stock springs in and fixing exhaust this weekend.
For sale :(

Pidgey
16th August 2011, 04:14 PM
NOT FOR SALE. Going to finish what I started.
Plans are to have this ready for Matsuri, not entering but I will be streeting with a couple friends whilst down there.

On the to do list is:
-Put my other rack bush in (powersteer makes it hard)
-S13 front.
-Coilovers.
-Put my 3.89 LSD in, came out of a car with >100K's, 100 bucks and included housing and axles.
-Do a decent intake and put my HKS filter on.
-Redo the rear of my exhaust.
-Silhouette steerer (maybe).
-Silhouette boot lip (hoping this dude will let me have it).
-Commodore rear brakes and hydraulic handbrake.
Basically going to copy what Nick (Racsov500) has done, his setup seems to have served him well for quite some time.
