How cute is the rad!

Has air con and power steering! So stoked!

I Think the first option in better as I would get suspension etc before sweet engine, and it will take some time to build it / find the parts.

Will be rocking crappy wheels for a while (MA61's) I want it lowdown style, flush slash poking.. Stock guards would be cool too I think with like 8.5- 9's and like 9's/10 rears with 185 60

If I have to respray, I don't know what color I would go.. I was thinking white again with a glitter, or maybe a beige or grey?

I have noooo idea till how long it will be until it's on the road..

Nice find, never seen one with the 4age in Australia before. When was it imported from japan?

IMO they should of all came with the 4age as the 22RE has the same power

marvis
30th January 2011, 02:09 PM
The guy I got it from said he has had it for 8 years, when it had 70,000KM on it.. He bought it from a holding yard in japan which it was sitting doing nothing for 10 years.

4age has more power, less torque. 22re has W58 behind it, where as this has a T50. Hopefully it can withstand me.

Where do you find these things? Atleast its betterthan a nissan.

GT-R badges are coupes, GTTR badges are sedans, well thats how Carinas are set out. Pretty cool find, you gonna keep the power steering? I would, but i have a celica manual rack if you want it.

Pull motor apart, im going to put the 90c in my wallet on it having a blown bigend

Todd posted a link to ebay in my R31 thread.

Going to keep powersteering for sure. I like the feel of the supra with it over my old RA65.

I will probably wack engine out and see how it is. Dude said oil was in water etc.

I also have spare power steering pump, resivor and rack and a engine cross member from a TA63 if you ever need them. I have no use for them as they were attached to an engine I bought.

yes i agree. those will be for powersteering weight adustments like lucifer said. provided they run to and from your psteer pump that is :p

standard ra65 rad is heaps bigger than that. u can have mine as soon as i put all the lcas etc in my ra and can fit the maxima rad. I had its end tanks replaced a few years ago so i dont see it failing anytime soon.

loving the jap spec accessories, speeding alarm. so rad. 65kmph tho, that thing is going to fun police u good.

I got some bare bigport heads chilling here which I am going to clean up around the valves and combustion chamber (both are pretty restrictive), wack the running gear on it, do valve seals and others.. I will check to see how this bottom end is.. I might just have to wack another piston in it or rings.. But if I need to do ring and bearings I will probably put a 7afe bottom into it and just rock new rod bolts on it, as it's not going to rev over stock limiter @ 7300? 0r 7500.

Took the battery out yesterday and there was oil all over the tray..

Porting is done.

Basically we only cared about 3 things:

-Don't increase the intake port size (it's already WELL oversize), only remove casting marks.
-Remove the "joggles" (because this engine will have 11.3-11.5 static comp, the sharp edges in the head can and do cause detonation). Again, removing as little material as possible, as any material taken from here also drops compression.
-Main area to work on: short turn radiuses. You wouldn't notice with the valves still in, but these have some BADASS casting marks that would hinder flow dramatically. A picture is worth a thousand words, so look at the shit below.

http://img43.imageshack.us/img43/6242/4agcombustionchamber.jpg

^^ From the TRD bible. Tells you to remove the gay stuff.

http://img4.imageshack.us/img4/5781/robohead2.jpg

^^ You can see the 'joggles' on the right of the picture, they are big and sharp, no good.

http://img8.imageshack.us/img8/2335/robohead4.jpg

^^ The massive casting marks on each and every short-turn radius. It's that big bit jutting out, below the lovely machined valve seat/s.

http://img10.imageshack.us/img10/3208/robohead3.jpg

^^ And zoomed in, cause i can.

http://img8.imageshack.us/img8/9335/robohead5.jpg

^^ 'Joggles' removed, without taking any material off that wasn't required. We didn't polish the combustion chamber area, as i've read too many conflicting opinions for and against, so i just chose the mid-ground (not-too-shiny, not-too-rough). I know the TRD bible even suggests polishing but .. meh.

http://img8.imageshack.us/img8/8387/robohead7.jpg

^^ And the short-turn radius all cleaned up.

Done.

/End essay

Waiting on cash from 86 sale, then I will have money to build engine and get the other body here.

Don't know if I should rego when engine and body is done ( I won't paint until I have wheels, just incase) or just do it after suspension ( I don't mind skidding the stock wheels from the supra)

You guys are always welcome to come over and help :P

Jacobxxx
3rd March 2011, 03:47 PM
after body and engine, why bother waiting for suspension when it takes like a day to swap everything?

marvis
4th March 2011, 10:10 AM
Will do the same as I have done in the supra. Cut strut 60mm, 40mm RCA, SW20 rear adjustable AGX probably? AE86 rack stuff fits for lock etc.

Rear AE86 springs and shocks fit, so TRD Blues and AJPS springs, Probably 10/8 spring rates. Maybe 9/7. Can get solid subframe mounts for these now too, from serial nine :)

White one is sooooo hot. I think I will do shit white paint untill I get good wheels then figure it out. It's only my midnight warrior.

I think I may need to get some of those subframe bushes. Considering the Superpro ones cost just as much, seems pretty good to me.

marvis
7th March 2011, 02:44 PM
But what do do about swing arms?

ill-minded
7th March 2011, 03:45 PM
Well, I was just planning to use the solid subframe bushes and just get Superpro bushes for the swingarms. You don't want an entirely rigid suspension for various reasons. Most of the rear end slop is due to the subframe bushes anyway.

Intense

Would you ever consider a 1gge conversion. Imagine a 1g with ITB's revving off its head. 2 litre too so more torques and it's not a terribly hard conversion into an a6x chassis either.

Getting exedy hd clutch tonight, flywheel machined, extractors. YYYEEAAHHH.

I'm thinking of doin some gussets from strut tower to firewall or should I use a tube? I would like to do it from the front of the tower to the rails too... Any suggestions?

Also should I seam weld or stitch weld? Stitch welding will flex where seam will crack? Not as stiff then?

ill-minded
15th April 2011, 08:07 PM
CHS from strut towers to firewall won't really do anything dude. The firewall flexes way too much. If you wanted to do that, you'd be installing a full weld in cage. Keep it simple, dude.

Also, I think the question you want is, "Should I weld the seams with stitches or tacks".

they wouldnt do fuck all. look cool though.
id make some fender braces if your trying to brace up the front abit. they're pretty simple to make and are hidden

ill-minded
17th April 2011, 01:55 AM
Pretty much what ke_70 said, dude. Gusseted plates aren't really gonna do anything other than add wank factor. If you go and build a proper strut brace and triangulate it back to the firewall, that'd be the best way to stiffen the front end and look cool in the process.

marvis
17th April 2011, 02:19 AM
Wouldn't the gusset do the same thing? I see it heaps in ae86's

ill-minded
17th April 2011, 02:38 AM
Nope. Well, the effect would be negligible and I doubt you'd actually feel or notice any difference with gussets. Triangulated strut braces stop a whole lot more flex. Trust me on this one. Pretty much the first rule to make any frame rigid (or more rigid) is to triangulate shit.

n2866
17th April 2011, 12:30 PM
^^ triangulate stuff. the gusset may be strong but its going to the fire wall which is really flexible and kinda thin..across the caster rods sounds ok but usally people go from the stut towers through into the cabin to the cage.

marvis
18th April 2011, 09:11 PM
I'll still do it.

I flagged stitch welding and engine bay paint for now. I'll just give it a clean up as the paint seems mint under all the shit.

Found a sweet glitter purple for it when I swap engines again though.

Personally I think its hard to go past silver or white for the engine bay, obviates leaks, cracks, chassis flex etc.

If you had to go purple...Would be better if it wasn't a ripply bog and shitty weld filled pit like the green car's, and more neat and tidy like the black engine bay.

I am thinking about doing an oil cooler setup like this (http://aishagarage.com/translation/86article_pg16.jpg), as it's hard to fit in-front of my aircon...

Or should I take it out? I'd sorta like to keep air con, but it does get in the way of my sandwich plate and it needs to face the firewall, also making it close the the exhaust manifold..

Hrrmmm.

The pin definitely doesn't go far enough, I will need to inspect. I will bleed after that has been sorted to see if it's leaking.

Any comments on the oil cooler location?

7AGE is flagged at the moment, I want to do body work/rego/suspension then I will build an engine. Hopefully it lasts until then.

so this is using the standard 4age with t50 and standard bellhousing? and the standard slave doesnt reach the clutch fork?

maybe try the slave out of your sprinter?

marvis
9th May 2011, 10:12 AM
It has a different bearing/sleeve, which is why I think it's doing it. I was looking at it the other day and it wasn't leaking. I assumed it was leaking because it was popping the seal out as it wasn't going far enough.

I will look at it wends hopefully.

so this is using the standard 4age with t50 and standard bellhousing? and the standard slave doesnt reach the clutch fork?

It's a JDM box, so it's on the driver side, different slave.

Put the supra suspension in this, went for a slide..

Just managed to skid second a few times (wheel alignment was fucked and front tire was low in pressure) But it wouldn't do a sick stl on brakes? Maybe It needs to be fiddled with or something, just didn't seem right..

Clutch seal was fucked, got another and extended the pin, but it's really soft untill near the bottom then it get really hard and feels really strange, WTFFF, almost like something is binding...

Had a fuuccckeeed day, been working on it all day, then the 15" watas wouldn't fit on (fouled coilovers) which had good tires.. Found out AA63 calipers don't fit on MA61 struts/brakes.

Off to bed, so fucked.. Thanks to everyone that helped today/tonight!

The benefit of running those rack end is the steering rack still maintains the same length, unlike the bolt on spacer that makes it longer, This effects the relationship between the steering rack length and the distance between the LCA mounting (pivot point). Bump steer and others crap is affected with the rack gets longer

Usually places dedicated to making springs (not just car, any kind of springs) can do you a spring to the rate, i.d/o.d, free height and shape (as in flattened top or bottom, tapered etc) that you request. When I got a set done they were about the price of a pair from an auto dealer. Just make sure you have all the specs, and maybe even a sample.

I am going to get stuck into the body work soon and I am having some troubles thinking of a color..

Beige with beige bumpers, purple tint with purple interior and bay.
Beige with black bumpers, purple tint with purple interior and bay.
White with glitter, black bumpers, purple tint with purple interior and bay.
White with glitter, white bumpers, purple tint with purple interior and bay.
Black with glitter, purple tint with purple interior and bay.

K12 brown and blue are fucking awesome too.

Sussy should be first!

Agreed on white/beige with black bumpers.
Dark wine/maroon would be hot though. More and more I think about it, the better it gets in my head.

White with glitter, white bumpers, purple tint with purple interior and bay.

this would look rad and be easy upkeep. remember to delete the black stripping. that angular line it leaves behind is what makes the white coupe look so good

My vote goes to beige/ivory. I'm biased though ^.^
Beige, black bumpers, purple interior/bay/tint with HEAPS of sparkles.
And bright yellow cage.
