My T18

Hey, relized I havent made on of these yet, so here is my 1980 T18, stuff that I have done so far is, original lowered with cut springs, now has MA61 coilovers and brakes in the front, has a TRD 2 way LSD with 4.3 GR, still cut springs in the rear but will be getting proper ones soon, flared guards with 15x8 +-0 koya ae teks all round, has a 38/38 weber and extractors and 2" with one high flow muffler and a hotdog resignator sounds good, thats about it will be getting resprayed due to a bit of rust but I love this car!


Just put the coilovers in the front and you can't push down at all like there is hardly any travel, they are ma61 ones with 8kg springs and tokico inserts I knew it wouldn't move much but when you try to press down it wont move at all, checked the inserts before i put them in and they work fine, at first wound down the coilovers all the way and the springs wernt even captive when it was all the way on the ground!

how do you adjust the ride height on coilovers? The last picture with camber is with then wound up so the spring is just captive with no load but it doesn't get any lower when you wind them down. Not that I mind though cause it will be around 100-110 when I do finish the rest of the car.

Needs an update.
So its been a while and this now has BC AE86 coilovers in the front and the 6kg BC springs and shocks in the back, with JDM front brakes. Also now have 13x8 SSR MK2's with neg 13 offset all round :) But the only thing is the ones on the front are a newer model but still looks alright.

Been trying to get out and on the track to do things legally, never drifted on a track before so I have now been to QR twice and love it and been to archefield for the first time on Saturday, had fun even with the little 3t :) got a few pictures that I will try to upload.

Sound deadening is out in the rear half, now to clean and prime.

much rust under the sound deadening? i want to do the same with my t18 but am a bit scared that the sound deadening is hiding a fair bit of rust!

Thanks! No rust at all under the sound deadening just a tiny bit behind one tail light when I tool them out, but it was just starting so i cleaned it up treated it and painted it again.

Anyway here are some pictures, stripping the sound deadening, then primed then done!

Then rerouted the wiring and boot cable so they are out of site now. And just made up a rear door trim template out of sheet, well its ok just need to find a neater way to cut the sheet metal.

So... Put a deposit on a toyota celsior/ lexus ls400 today, should be picking it up next weekend or the next and conversion will start!

If anyone wants some parts or knows someone who needs anything other than engine, loom and ecu let me know.
Has a good set of 17's with legal 235/45 tyres.

FWIW these things are almost heavy enough stock - as in within a handful of kilograms- to be legal for a 1UZ under NCOP, an understanding engineer may well pass it.

National code of practice, will eventually supersede vehicle standards in a lot of states if govco get their way. But one good thing is it only requires the same size brakes as fitted to the donor car (early ls400 brakes would easy fit under 15s), and for unibody cars the max engine capacity in cc is 4x vehicle weight in kg. So T18s are 984kg, 1uz is 3996cc/4 =992kg min weight for the motor. So close!

I don't know if QLD have signed on yet? Heard they were going to this year. Downside is it's the instrument which all the protests were about regarding 50mm maximum lowering etc.

Not going to be registered again will be stripped back inside and out on a rotisserie and whole shell painted inside, out and underneath.
Hoping for it to weigh about 900kg when done, but will be happy with sub 1T.

Picked up the donor car today, has all svc history since it was imported in 06 with only 46000kms on it now has 160k on it was serviced every 5000kms even had a homo grill custom made for $300.
Plan is to use as much out of the car as possible from radiator and throttle cable to possibly even the fuel tank and fuel pumps ect, so should work out pretty cheap, will be getting a full cage as well should be a very well setup car when done.

SOO got defected minor roadside 1 point $100 and if I want to drive it on road still have to take it to transport (yeah right!)
So just said I am going to deregister it tomorrow, was going to do it next weekend but have to do it tomorrow now haha. Drove it with no interior, dash and sills @70mm for the last few months.
Not too fussed really new it would happen one day.

So lexus is getting there pulled out most of loom under dash and starting to pull engine and box out, all that and then pulling off other stuff off the car to sell but might end up getting a free engine loom and ecu might even get money back :)

T18 is nearly all pulled apart only diff engine suspension and diff is left to pull out.

Oh ye loosing my license by the 31st too :( should be able to get license for work though so not too bad, learned my lesson.

Engine in lexus should be out tomorrow hopefully. Loosing license soon so will have plenty of time on the weekend now to work on the car, going to go have a look at gearbox and bellhouseing soon can't remember what brand but is close ratio gearbox with 1:1 5th gear bellhouseing, box, flywheel, and 2 clutches for about $2500 I think which doesn't sound too bad for what it is and should work out to be the most expensive part of the conversion.

Anyone know where I can get some roll cage tube and get it bent up for cheap in brisbane? all I need bent is front legs, window bar and rear hoop the rest of the cage I can build myself, got a quote from bond cages down south for about $1500 for whole cage shipped but I think I could do it cheaper by just getting those items bent up and finish everything else myself.

Also got some new wheels they are 14x7 -5 and 14x7.5 -15 SSR fins, 7.5's should fit mint in front with the amount of camber and a slight roll and rears should be good enough fitment for skid wheels :) Will get some more nice looking skid wheels later on after conversion is done.

Oh also forgot am swapping my front AE86 JDM brakes for a RX7 setup the AJPS type so I can hopefully fit my 14's under them :)

Pulled engine out of the lexus today was quite easy, how do people normally trick an auto ECU into thinking its in neutral? I have got the engine loom off fine, just need to find out if I need any of the body loom as well? Only needs to start and run, will be put behind manual box.

Nearly all of sound deadening out of interior, thinking of painting it the original beige as well not sure yet either that or white again not going to be show car quality but will be decent. Thinking of getting car soda blasted instead of sanding everything, only had one quote so far was $1600 for inside and out but not including underside of floorpan.

Got some new rear wheels that actually fit thanks to Dan at option 1.

Also test fitted the ls400 radiator and it should fit with a little bit of work and cost nothing!

coming along man, should be epic with the 1uz in it. Just a question how high off the ground is it in that pic showing the height?

I have no idea about the engine bay, but I would say they are about the same.

The rear is the height I want it at but the front has the coilovers wound nearly all the way up just to make it easier to get jack under/put on hoist. The rear sills are at about 65-70mm off the ground, has 160mm rear springs its the bc rear setup which will probably be for sale :) Getting rear coilovers :)

Unfortunately they are only 15x7 +3, that diff is only 10mm a side wider than a t series, with the t series I suppose I only had 13x8 0's.

All has to be done and ready for matsuri as well, hope to get it done before then and get one practice session in.

Also bought another series 2 T18, which I want to swap for a car trailer to tow this with if anyone knows someone who would be willing to swap.

Hopefully it will be done, haha. Not much big stuff to do, well... Still have to sort out if I go riveted flares or weld front guards on rear, might just go the flares for now as they give heaps of room.

Had friday off so got a bit done, got it to mates place. Pulled engine apart and put new water pump, timing belt tappet cover gaskets, ect, ect.

Sorted out the flywheel and clutch, offered box to engine and the input shaft decided it wasn't long enough... But how ever the gearbox kit I bought for the engine cam with a solution for this problem :)

Helped out my mate put together the stroker 308 for a commodore engine, V8 life, haha some very rare and expensive cars in the background there! (not the commodore, haha.
Then we found some paint and did the engine bay probably do the rest of the interior in orange next weekend and probably just do the exterior in satin black for matsuri and paint it after, I was thinking blue and white, just solid 2k so easy to touch up if something happens.

Should most defiantly be ready for matsuri but I may be unable to drive, might have t have an operation, not sure will have to go see another doctor, the operation itself is only day surgery but recovery time is long till I can sit down in a stiff car with a race seat...

Anyone know what the go is if we can't drive? I would think there would be a long waiting list for people pulling out? Might have to not go depending on when this operation gets done or just deal with it and get it done after matsuri, haha.

I've been a bit slack, got all fuel lines done and radiator hoses done. Trans tunnel is done, should get a tailshaft made up soon when I find a rear flange to fit an early hilux diff I should just measure it and see what fits. Then only things stoping it from running and driving are wiring everything again! and brake lines, all of them, haha.

Yeah, haha. No license kind of killed the motivation and the car being at mates place about an hours drive with no one who wanted to drive me there haha.

No, but hopefully get some motivation, making another spare hilux diff, haha. Once my internet banking is working I can get my inline bias valve and start on brake lines then take it back to a mates place and wort out wiring :)

Modded exhaust, still have a bit to do, and found a ribbed pulley to use to keep the auto tensioner.

Once I mount pedal box and hydraulic handbrake I can make up some brake lines, fuel lines are done, I am on the look out for an early hilux diff yoke to get a talishaft made for it.

Finished off the drivers side exhaust manifold this afternoon just had to weld a flange on and cut off the old O2 sensor bung, welded that back on and I will refit the exhaust, once I see if the exhaust I pulled off the celsior sells on ebay I can cut that up to make the exhaust if it doesn't sell or order some bends and pipe to make some up.

So this has been put on hold and is going to become a long term project which will have the engine seeing some sort of forced induction.
However most people I know will know about my other T18 with commodore V6 now in it, manual T5 box, hilux diff, coilovers all round should make a thread for it soon. But its not too far off being driving.
