View Full Version : Project Spirit

Hi to all, lurking about here for a while, thought i'd share my current/actual project with you all.

After a major change of direction with my "project" i canned the whole FWD track car build (ae92 hatch with full built engine) and decided to head down the RWD path.

It took me pretty much one night to fully convince myself that i wanted a KE70 or AE71, and since the AE71 was gonna cut some* time out of the build i started looking for one.

The result was a 1984 ae71 spirit, managed to keep rego, and get a rwc so i can keep the thing registered whilst the build takes place, removing the need for a rwc once its back up and running.

In the meantime, whilst i had the engine built and the spirit sitting in the yard, i ended up dropping it in my daily at the time (currently still is) and did the run in with the FWD chassis while i accumulate parts/funds for the E7.

Spirit, bro's 13b rx4, and the daily*:

Also should add, i have done everything from rebuilding the engine to wiring and tuning the engine.

she is currently sitting on 14ish psi of boost and is hitting a wall due to fuel, when it goes into the spirit, ill have a bosch 044 and a 140lpm lift pump along with a new surge tank ill make up when the time comes.

Pics from the FS thread when i bought it:

Could quite easily say a FWD dump pipe is a cunt of a job in fabrication terms:

The intake was easy apart from the chassis rail mod to fit the 4" turbo intake in there

Almost contemplating keeping the FWD deathtrap on the road...

stripped down the spare GZE block today, very good condition, ae92 GZE rods (beefy cunts) and ae92 slugs in V good condish, so i might just save up n build this motor up to spec + bigger turbo than the FWDdeathtrap

???

profit

blake.
28th February 2011, 05:55 AM
Do it. That would be mad

lolwat
28th February 2011, 07:32 AM
should keep FWD deathtrap, you ever pull up beside a bogan spec P plater commo and jsut rip the hand brake and "steam the clams" for like ages

Casey-G
28th February 2011, 06:31 PM
Yeah haha fuck it, ill build a separate motor i think...

I've been going through this thinking stage where i couldn't make up my mind with what i wanna do.. but now im pretty sure i know what i want :)

Im not a hoon by any means.. and she's pretty stealthy so i don't have trouble with cops at all.. though on the odd occasion where im not in a good mood and need some cheering up, shitbox commis (even the new ve shitboxes too) always prevail for teh lulz.. :)

Cheers bro's..

Suppose ill do an update of sorts.

Starting to collect bits n bobs at this stage, dont have much, just a fuel cell, bosch 044 and a 140lpm lifter.. contemplating starting to rip the interior out soon, running wires ect.. start on the rust repairs where it needs it. start flaring the shite outa the gaurds ect..

I havent "started" working on the spirit yet.. its just well.. sitting in the yard moved from A to B when the lawn needs cutting...

I thinkin just a KEsev front end will be fine, slant cuts away to much room for oil/intercoolers ;)

What diff and brakes will you be using? Going for a W series box or crossing your fingers on a T50?

lolwat
10th April 2011, 01:34 PM
hahah gilmore drive on the gte hahahaha thats awesome

Casey-G
10th April 2011, 01:52 PM
i know the t50 isnt gonna last long even on low boost.. but it will make way for a w5X box and an F series full spooled diff when the opportunity presents itself.

foamy
10th April 2011, 06:00 PM
So your using a stock rear end/AE86 gear to get away with the stock tailshaft?

Casey-G
10th April 2011, 06:16 PM
i really dont know what counts as ae86 gear :S sorry im learning a whole new language here

blake.
10th April 2011, 07:23 PM
Where did you get the Gilmore drive kit from?

foamy
10th April 2011, 08:36 PM
Sorry Casey, I meant are you sticking with the stock KE70 diff (borg warner) or using a S or T series rear end from a AE86? Both of these would allow you to avoid having a custom tailshaft made until you go for a bigger diff.

blake.
10th April 2011, 08:48 PM
4 posts above he says he's going for a spooled f series.

Casey-G
10th April 2011, 09:22 PM
It has a welded T series diff in it atm, it will no doubt part company once boost comes up around the 10psi mark, but yes as blake has highlighted i will be getting an F series and going full spool with that.

Blake, endeavor engineering in NZ, it is only to suit a FWD water pump/alt setup ;)

Anyways today:

Washed the shit outa the bay today, if anyone ever gets the opportunity to become in possession of a 3600psi pressure washer i highly recommend it, lol it just vaporizes 400XXXkm's of built up greasyoilgunkshitcunt ^_^

then there was a bit of a headscratch about getting it back in the shed:

B)

Getting a spigot bearing tomorrow and some urethane which should see the motor in the car by about 2pm ish haha but thats in dream land, something will no doubt slow me down

foamy
10th April 2011, 09:31 PM
I read that Blake, wasn't sure if he meant he would use the F series straight away or putt around in it with the stock borgie/S/T/ series until it exploded (then replace it with an F series).

Casey-G
10th April 2011, 09:58 PM
Sorry yes i wasn't very clear with that, as i am waiting for a lot of my FWD/spare shit to sell (reminds me i should put a thread up here) i will be bolting this motor into the t50 along with the locked T series (which has 4.3:1 ratios in it) that is in it already for a "teething period" .. once i start to wind the boost into it and work my spare head the drive line will need serious attention.

Casey-G
11th April 2011, 05:26 PM

Are you looking at mounting the intercooler inside the engine bay in front of the radiator?

Casey-G
15th April 2011, 10:23 PM
Well no not really.. its kinda complicated actually

foamy
15th April 2011, 10:26 PM
Do tell :D. I figured being on your P's you would want it as stealth as possible. With the correct type of inter cooler and radiator it should work reasonably well...

Casey-G
15th April 2011, 10:49 PM
only got a few more months of "P plate rules which i follow with the up most of respect" lol jk boosted car for 80% of my P's

the radiator will sit where it ends up, should still have quite a bit of room once its done.
Im using 2 X 3 inch core intercoolers with the end tanks removed and the cores welded together then modifying the end tanks to suit as if to make one "big" IC out of the pair, inclusive of brackets it will take up approx 180-190mm + rad @ 50mm core, so i should still have heaps of room for fanage.

Casey-G
21st April 2011, 08:24 PM
Well... finally got home today, only spent a little bit of time on it tonight as it was dark by the time i got down the shed.

basically the engine mounts are in, inlet manifolds been chopped and the wiring has been semi attacked to remove all the dodgy driving light circuits that were half in it.

Mounts in:

coils look good man you got skills, BUT (there's always a BUT XD) have you thought of mounting them in cabin so a cleaner look in engine bay????

Casey-G
26th April 2011, 11:10 PM
All the relays and such will be inside, the wiring is no where near complete however as it is the wires are in about the right spot..

personally i don't give a shiznit about looks, but ill take that on board..

but mounting the coils in the cab? how on earth will you be able to keep all the interference they generate away from the sensor wiring and the wide band and such? Its a pretty important thing to consider, thats all

lolwat
26th April 2011, 11:18 PM
to be honest im not sure, i have jsut seen guys do it before but yet again they had like no dashes so could isolate them

Casey-G
26th April 2011, 11:20 PM
Oh k cool :)

Oh i have a smallport ECU if your interested, i know your chasing BP's but yeah

lolwat
26th April 2011, 11:36 PM
nah only want JDM BP ones, cheers anyway man :) might OM about some shit later too (fab stuff :) )
just curious, you said about all the interference the coils would make in cabin, what about all those wires running under them now???? (not having a dig or anything)

Casey-G
27th April 2011, 12:01 AM
They are just suspended, in cable ties atm, im only running wires at this stage, they have enough slack to sit low enough so they will sit well clear of the coils and leads, 100mm+ which is safe and will not affect it.

:)

the job im putting off atm is the fuel system.. RCI fuel sell, 140lpm lift pump and a bosch 044... not gonna be pretty in the boot, still have to make a surge tank n shiz :(

lolwat
27th April 2011, 12:21 AM
hahahahah have fun =D, reckon you could fab, a catch can, overflow bottle and wash bottle for me????? (infact fuck the washer bottle) ill pm you tomorrow what im after if your keen (i got tafe in the morning early start :( ) im off

how much to make up one of those coil brackets can you run it like that on a stock bigport pm me if you want

Casey-G
27th May 2011, 08:27 PM
I doubt you'll be able to run in on a stock 4a ignition system, unless you work around it with an external ignition module or something silly.

I really don't have the time to be building other people shit just yet, however if i upgrade at any stage with anything, parts will be available for purchase ;)

Tires are only 195's atm on the g5's which i think are 7" wide... but the f series diff will open up a new world of cheap rims and such.

got a few more updates ill post up later tonight

Fiddled around with a bit of wiring tonight, got the injectors fitted off, TPS, CAS and the 4bar map sensor also :) Got the coils, Air and water temp sensors to go, then Main power to the starter and a few other lil bits n its all done wiring wise B)

Also kinda half got the front end partially together to see what will need bracing ect..

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/520593.jpg

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/520594.jpg

RE: manifold
I have been doing quite a bit of reading ect of late in preparation of this manifold, obviously not intending to stay mainstream i have canned a "regular" type manifold such as you see with most custom set ups and have gone for a more "out there" style, aiming for very high flow and hopefully allowing some bigger numbers to be made.
These are a few taken from turbosmart that are sorta like what im aiming for:

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/520595.jpg

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/520596.jpg

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/520597.jpg

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/520598.jpg

you kinda get the idea

foamy
4th June 2011, 11:58 PM
Going for the crazy front mount turbo idea? Seems a few guys from foreign countries have fiddled with this idea (have seen a heap of drag 4G63 motors with this setup), makes sense when the exhaust manifold sits at the front of the engine bay. Your a mad ham.

Casey-G

Cheers christian & foamz

update ish

Engine bay wiring is done, just finishing up under the dash tonight, rigged up an antilag switch on the clutch tonight, luckily enough parts from the seca were used!

Wideband gauge and controller are all installed and working, air temp, coil packs, 4bar map sensor, and the turbosmart dualstage controller are all installed and functioning.

No pics as such really, I tacked up the collector for the turbo and made a strut off the old engine mount to support the snail, there will be more added but i will wait until i fab the runners and the dump before i add another one off the block.

Small le'update..

had a few big weeks of work lately, slept in till 2pm today, went n did a bit of shit in town, then finally got home n had a tinker with the boot/how im mounting my fuel cell..

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/521030.jpg

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/521031.jpg

As you can see, the tire well is gone, i took a bit of time thinking what height the cell will sit at in relation to the boot floor, decided on sitting it about 150mm below to the bottom (sits lower than pictured), as opposed to some setups ive seen with it just sitting at floor level. Hopefully this will keep whatever negligible weight/center of gravity issues that would/could cause any tankslap or the likes from being noticed. It also cuts down on a lot of length of pickup and return hose, with will keep things tidy in there.

I also welded 2 more cross members, across the rear chassis:

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/521032.jpg

From what i found the only real "bracing" across that part of the shell/chassis was the boot floor skin and the matirial that makes up the rear of the car, so this will hopefully stiffen it up a bit.

So tomorrow should see the cell mounted fully, and me sorting out what im doing with the top rad/IC support, as i changed my mind... again.

I canned the stainless turbo mani idea, going back to sch40 38nb steam fittings, had some flanges laser cut out of 12mm mild steel so all that will get cracking shortly too..

Put my ass into gear a bit more this week even though i had a heap of other shit to do:

Its gon' be a tight schedule the next two weeks!!

but! theres always a but..

Shit is moving forward, shit is getting built, and very shortly it'll be ready to start, all i need is to fab a surge tank and plumb everything up.

Manifold is done except for the waste gate (couldn't ninja the old one as its under vito's bed) as well as the dump pipe complete, of course it'll need the system made but since the dump only took 3 hours to fab and it had a lot more cutting and welding involved i cant see the system taking too long.

home stretch lads;

That's a manifold and a half!
What? No hole in the bonnet for a scream pipe?:)

Casey-G
24th September 2011, 01:22 AM
So toyofest has been wrote off.. car just wont be quite running by then :(

anyways..

shits been slowy getting done:

Manifold and dump are now complete, just need to make one more brace for the turbo before i drive it.

Upgraded all fuel lines to 8mm, allowed me to buy just one size of hose for everything except the intake for the 044

Also modded the fuel rail for 8mm lines, moving completely away from the factory regulator now, using a 450hp rated 1:1 reg.

Re-mounted the electrics onto a single sheet of stainless, using a terminal strip it allows me to make changes easily to the system.. input/outputs ect..

Had a beer or several

Modded my old screamer pipe to suit new location, still need to order a 2bar spring set.

Just today saw most "bigger" jobs done, like facing the turbo manifold, welding up the vband and doing all the mods required for it to fit and assembling it all. Hopefully over the weekend ill get the fuel system sorted and turn her over for the first time in 5-6months :D

anyways im a bit short on pics but meh:

wow!! nice build man!! keep up the good work I'll be keeping an eye on this thread!!

Casey-G
21st October 2011, 11:06 PM
sldsho, there really is nothing left of the factory loom, all the original loom was perished from either fuel/oil of just age, the insulation was all hard = cracks/exposed conductors :/
so i re did it all, still need to fit off the relays for headlights/brakes and hazards but there isnt much to it really, just using run of the mill bosch single pole relays :)

Thanks Sheppo ;)

i can safely say now, all i am waiting on to start the car is a radiatorio :/ i had one but found a massif hole had been modded to one of the cores, it didnt sit with me hellaflush so i binned it.. ill order one next week, much the same as the one i had in the seca.

And results of the block = win win, no cracks (thank FUCK!)and i am now sitting on .5 OS bores with brand new gze slugs wrist pins and toyo genuine rings.. was gonna go hastings again but i had these sitting there! aha

so really all it needs now is a decking and the head shaved a little (we are gonna play with the compression a bit ;) ), (hopefully bearings and gasket arrives between that time) and i shall slap her back together again!

Stoked! pumped! ready to get this bitch rolling properly for the first time!

Been a while... haha

Well since i updated last..

I have:

Run the motor in (350km trip to melb first day of it running) helped a mate of mine with a silvertop conversion, dropped the oil there, new filter n then drove home, no problems whatsoever.

Broke the drivers side axle mid may, replaced it, then the passenger side one easter saturday... car sat with a pegger for about 2 months.. then replaced both and finally changed the diff oil after owning it for 2 years :S oops :P (there were some cold nights had replacing them on the front lawn under fluro light:

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/5/3/8/6/387805.jpg

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/5/3/8/6/387807.jpg

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/5/3/8/6/387809.jpg

Installed some bosch 2250cc/min high impedance injectors while working in ringwood, had the bonnet off the car and the harness apart terminating the new plugs to the loom and installing the injectors in the hotel undercover carpark, worked well into the night, got it all done by like 9:30, then flooded it, flattened the battery n had to call my mate to come jumpstart me at 11pm while i got the basics on the map correct, obviously then went n took it for a spin around midnight covering any passed car in a thick haze of partially burned BPultimate :P

Attended all toyota winterfest that same weekend:

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/5/3/8/6/387815.jpg

And now just recently did about 2000km in the old girl attending the bathurst cruise.. which i was bitterly disappointing the under representation of all you guys!!! i got excited!!

Much better photos in the bathurst cruise thread

Changed the oil in the t50 for the first time in like 2 years today (quite certain it didnt see much love from the previous owner either) what come out was what i though was this cool new stuff called gear paste... turns out i was wrong...

tax return coming in soon, so the w58 and r31 diff are getting tee'd up very soon, just need a bell housing... dellow is looking like god atm

few more shots.. just got a new phone so ive been playing with filters/effects ect.. (some old photos) feel free to say what looks shit (all of them lol)

Will be repainting the engine bay and the interior of the car but probably won't touch the panels or anything unless I get really keen

Anyways....

Seam welding is just about done, about 3/4 of the way through the car, have a few re-enforcement bars to weld in prior to sealing off the boot and caging it..

Pretty much everything except my shocks is sitting in my room now

Thanks for the comments guys, if anyone has a pair of ae86 hubs I can buy let me know as that's all I need to get her rolling again!

These bad boys turned up in the post the other day and I'm still in aww about the quality of them... just simply works of art! Massive thanks to Brett and Chris at shockworks for getting these to me, anyone else who has ordered a set or are interested in them I can guarantee you will not be disappointed with them, simply perfect.

twiddling my thumbs two hours away from the car... gonna put in a solid effort this weekend i reckon... i started making the jig for the diff to adapt the r31 diff to the rolla 4 link, once its done i should be able to do any diff to suit e7/86 rear ends less independent obviously :)

gahfuckworkgettingintheway!!

ps, i bought a 2010 VE ss ute to tow with! sydney bound!

Nah body will just stay rough.. keep all the tidy attention seeking bits hidden.

Heres how its sitting.. still waiting on buying a set of hubs.. so hopefully something comes soon.. I also just got my fuel pumps last night. The system will be 1x pierburg 360L/h in tank lift pump in a plastic safety foam filled cell then that will feed two 400L/h walbro e85 in tanks mounted in the surge tank I make for them.. they will equalize from two -8 to like a half inch line to just before the rail, then split back to 2 -8 lines on either end of the rail to keep pressure equal across the injectors then it will have 1 -8 return to the surge tank then a return from the surge tank to the cell.

It should be adequate! Aha

It will however be a PITA routing the stainless hard lines underneath the body... methanol <3

So now its just a hunt for hubs, slide86 hopefully has the answer so here's hoping!! Aha I almost canned the current brake setup and went a full floating hub but that's the last resort (most expensive too ~2800 Inc brakes)

So with work flat out over christmas (criminal i tells ya) i have actually started to make some more progress.

Diff is pretty much 80% complete, just need to fab some shock mounts and weld them on.. then probably get started on the gearbox n tailshaft..

here's all the pics i have that i haven't posted yet:

you spent some time spotting up the seams, nice work, should be interesting how this motor performs.
keep it up bro, dig the neat wiring.

Casey-G
31st December 2012, 10:25 AM
Yeah that was a bitch of a job... probably would just bar the car out more if i had to choose over doing it again..

Cheers man, i like it too, nothing is worse than trying to find issues in a car loom, this makes it straight forward and easy to remove..

now... tell me if im crazy but:

Fuark this build is madness, just read through most of it, goodwork on it all, just one question, how come you didn't use seam sealer on the welded seams or just didnt picture that? And why just tack the seams?

sundee
31st December 2012, 11:23 AM
Do it!!!

Casey-G
31st December 2012, 01:07 PM
Well... I dunno if your asking for advice but its what I thought would be best.. everyone will have there own opinion though so that's that.. bit like why I welded my rear doors shut n barred them out.. its just how I'm doing it.

Care not for sealant the cab gets that warm I don't think moisture will be much of a problem.. wouldn't really care if it did find its way in anyways..

Pending my pay this week I think I'll be ordering it for sure :)

drift kid
31st December 2012, 02:16 PM
Nah just curious, cause little gaps and seams tend to attract metal shavings and particles and rust quite fast sadly, Im not here to criticize only to browse :)

Casey-G
31st December 2012, 02:40 PM
Yeah thats fair, I vacuumed it all out and ran a magnet through the car to pick up anything that was stuck in the seams.. if it rusts I'll just cut it out n replace it but I'm fairly certain I got most places with etch n a decent coat of paint.

Made up another brace for the Turbo today, I will retain the old one too so if it starts to get warm n warp a little this should hold its place.. there stainless steel precision rod ends so they shouldn't bind with heat.

I also finished all the fab work for the diff I.e shock mounts which only need welding on and a gusset added so all that except the new pan hard which will need a bigger rod end than the ones I have so it can wait..

This will be the last update for the year :P too busy tonight with other social crap

drift kid
1st January 2013, 11:21 AM
Nice welds man, i thought you said you were a sparky? You have any previous fabrication training? Its all looking great man, i love the turbo setup, can i ask if having it in that configuration has helped atall? Does it lag more or does it spool up differently?

Casey-G
2nd January 2013, 07:37 AM
Haha I am an apprentice Sparky!
Nah no previous training, just self taught since dad introduced me to the tig when I was about 15

To be honest it does spool up much faster than when I had it in a fwd configuration, my guess is having the runners fairly close to matched lengths has increased flow or eliminated turbulence or something.. its also allowed me to do a fairly smooth or at least use subtle angles on the dump pipe without having to do the norm 90* 90* following the firewall.. also kept inter cooler plumbing to a minimum length.. but in all I am just trying to be different :)

Casey-G
2nd January 2013, 10:02 PM
Come monday ill be ordering my front wheel bearings, n a few other bits n bobs, if end up with change the nitrous is a go.

shock mounts have been tacked on, come up a treat, will cut a gusset to brace them to the lower trailing arm mounts tomorrow night after work n weld them up, then suss out the RCAs for the rear, to be honest im pretty happy how the r31 borgy fits so ill be using the 31 panhard mount and make the bar to suit it (little bit bigger stub) and ill also use the 31 swaybar n modify the mounts on the chassis to suit it.. shouldnt need to go a heavier sway bar than it as its quite a bit thicker than the OEM toyota one.

then it'll be time to sit the spool in, throw the axles in, chuck the discs back on, n drop it back on its ass n see how it sits.. its technically (with the new wheels included) about 45mm wider each side to the center of the wheel and the old ones were just clearing. So there will be some heavy handed massaging done on the rear guards and will probs just chop off excess n make up some new flares to house the new 15x8's.

gsfjgsdfjgljasdfklgmailsdnglasnfvgxdfklgm i just want it back!

take the r31 calipers off, put commo ones on

Casey-G
3rd January 2013, 06:23 AM
Bolt on or will I need to make brackets? What model?

lolwat
3rd January 2013, 08:01 AM
vr/vs i beleive its a bolt on affair as the R31's have issues with locking up, you will need to go hydro handbrake

Casey-G
3rd January 2013, 09:25 AM
Hydro is sorted I have that already

Are the stock ones no good even with the hydro?

Might look into some wilwood 4pots for the rear as I'm looking at selling my 4pots n getting 6's for the front

Casey-G
3rd January 2013, 09:26 AM
Or obviously use my 4 pots on the rear hmmng derp

Jdm-Mcc
3rd January 2013, 05:31 PM
R31 calipers can work if rebuilt well, but are renowned for locking on, as mickey said commodore calipers bolt on and just need brake hoses to suit and work a treat by comparison

sundee
3rd January 2013, 07:57 PM
im selling wilwood 6 pots for the fronts now if you running 86 struts.
if your looking for something cheap, use the above suggestions for the rear...
but judging by the spec of this build.. the rear brakes would be the cheapest thing on your car if you gonna use those old cast iron callipers.

you planning on a cage, im trying to stay away from one, intend of doing what you have, welding EVERY seam

Casey-G
23rd January 2013, 05:48 AM
Yeah I am.. but its not happening till I Suss the car out as it sits now..

What's your reasoning on not caging it? I figured if its gonna be any quicker than before than as insurance on my own skin it will be worth doing

lolwat
23rd January 2013, 08:02 AM
being able to see it, i might just look into running main hoops and things in B pillars

Casey-G
23rd January 2013, 09:09 AM
Yeah I'm just gonna do a harness bar for now n seal the boot off.. maybe weld the footing plates for the cage in but that's as far as I'll go till it sees the track more often.. I get what your saying with visibility n shit.. that never crossed my mind and I should consider it as its still got rego :/

meadan
25th January 2013, 07:02 PM
Yeah I always thought the same thing.

But that little bit of weight and inconvenience is still a nice piece of insurance. Welded in foot plates with a bolt in cage is what I did, so it can be taken out if I really feel like it.

Are you sticking with glass side rear windows? 1 piece polycarb to get rid of the little quarter windows would look cool.
