Not sure if I'm overstepping my welcome but here goes....

Not dissimilar to Jake's thread, however, rather than just being random pictures of dope shit, try to keep this one on a theme. Web based magazine style articles and information, epic build threads, Speedhunters/Nori Yaro blog posts etc.

I'd also rather not fill other peoples threads with my rambling about E30, E21 and 2002 nonsense.

Random Ideas:
Epic videos of epic cars, doing epic things.
Build Threads that caught your eye as being, over the top, unique, extreme dedication to detail, etc.
Gr. 5/GR. A/Group B/N2/N1/IPRA/Sports Sedans/D1 - etcetera related pictures/videos/articles
Any grass Roots Motor sports
Cafe Race
Any other crazy, cool shit, you find that doesn't fit into other threads.

Rules:
Use proper grammar.
Post dope shit.
Embed YouTube videos. Don't post links, it looks messy - video code [/ youtube] Minus spaces.
If you're getting your flame on, do it in a constructive way. Don't be saying "That's gay, herp derp, derp". Give an actual reason as to why you don't like something, or what you may do differently given the opportunity.

Formalities out the way, let's set this thing off. If you want.

BMW M12/7
Used in both Touring Cars (BMW 2002's, 320's - GS Tuning, Heidegger and others) as well as F2. Sixteen valve cylinder head, slide throttle fuel injection (Bosch/Kugelfischer). These engines have gear driven cams, typically used Titanium connecting rods, dry-sump oiling - the works. They make power from about 7,000 RPM all the way to 10,000 RPM. The M12/7 was always run vertically (straight up and down) as it was developed for formula car use initially.
They made around 300hp.

I know this is an older video but I still can't get over how awesome the Tedsport AE86 is.

From Speedhunters.

Gone is the trusty but comparatively slow 4-AGE. In it's place is a 2.5 Series 2 Millington engine which produces 318BHP and 230 ft/lbs from it's compact four cylinder, normally aspirated motor.

I'm an avid fan of retro naked sports bikes and cafe racer style.

Probably the best looking factory bike ever, is the KZ1000 MK2.
http://www.motogarage.jp/custom/mk2_hp.jpg
This one has isn't exactly stock but the tank, tail, seat and side plastics are.

One of my favourite cafe racer style bikes is the BMW boxers. Particularly BMW R45 and R65's.

I've lost hours on this site. http://www.rockerboxer.com/garage.html

After I've finished my AE86 and E30, I plan to build a basic Cafe Racer style R65, since they're cheap and LAMS approved.

Clip on handle bars, hidden gauges and small single headlight, single seat and matching tail, small exhausts that end where the frame meets the swing arm, black wheels and lowered suspension. Would be fairly rad.

RE: BMW cafe racers.
My dad had an R90 cafe racer in his day amongst a shit load of other bikes. I would argue against getting an R65 as the R90 was apparently way better? IDK, could just be dad's opinion.
I will be building a cafe racer sometime next year from either a honda CB or suzuki GS.

R65 = 650cc
R90 = 900cc, the bike is also a bit larger.

I'll be going for an R65 due to the fact they are LAMS approved and I want to build a small, nimble cafe racer; not a crazy fast one.

Awesome video. Will watch again.

Just had a look on ebay, damn they're not as expensive as I thought! Not a fan of bmw boxers though, don't know why I just don't.
For cafe bikes there are two roads to go through: japanese and european.
Euro is cooler as there's so much history to everything, I love hearing all of the old bike dudes talk shit at swapmeets and etc. It's also mighty expensive because parts are getting rare these days.
Jap is cheap as and plentiful.

That bike is awesome. Looks good and sounds better. I'm a big fan of Suzuki and Kawasaki.

I'd say that these days, most older bikes are going to be expensive whether Euro or JDM. Part of the reason I'm so drawn to the BMW's for a Cafe Race project is the uniqueness. Not many bikes around use a drive shaft rather than a chain.

Pidgey
23rd May 2011, 07:13 PM
Yeah, I'm not sure with the driveshaft idea. Apparently it did odd things to the handling characteristics of the bikes but people liked it?
Friend's dad has a suzuki GS850 he might part with. I'd have to work it a lot to get it how i want it but it'd be cheap and would go SO hard.
Screw LAMS, I'll just put 550 build tags on. She'll be right.
Sorry to clutter your thread... Cafe racers are so so awesome though!

Broadspeed is a name synonymous with Ford's circuit racing history, much like that of Zakspeed. So to stumble upon one of only two surviving examples (as far as we're aware) of one of the finest Escort circuit racers known was a pretty mean feat. I'll let you pick up the mag to read the full story about how this all came about.

The car is a 1969/1970 shell converted by Broadspeed to British Touring Car / Super Saloon specification. Another detail, you can just about make out the brake ducts under the front headlights. The wheels (which aren't the originals) are Image items, measuring 10x15 up front and 12x15 out back.

Same same but with a BMW V8, slightly better motor than a 1UZ but would cost 2-3x as much. In Australia, anyway.

Yeah, the US front is pretty ugly, as are US bumpers. Hard to find 810 pictures though. Anybody got some?

I wouldn't mind a mild 200B SSS for a daily.

Basically stock - rebuilt L20B on bike carbs
JDM 14x7/7.5's.
8KG Coil overs

Bride fixed back
OMP Corsica steering wheel

Wouldn't need much to be a dope car, L20's are pretty awesome.

3L M20 is still a M20. definitely not worth spending money on those boat motors unless its just a standard rebuild for a daily

OniKyan

Or a stroker from random parts you have laying around.

I bet that 3.0 sounds fucking tough though. Would put out plenty of torque too.

Vance
27th June 2011, 07:39 PM
like all strokers youll lose rev limit. all its power and torque will be over earlier which will make it less fun to drive (for me anyway) especially since its NA. NA is all about revs for fun

OniKyan
27th June 2011, 07:46 PM
If you picked up a cheap 325e, it would be silly not to do the head swap though.

Personally, I feel that a mildy tuned 323i would have more than enough power. The M20B23 puts out about 80rwkw, some BTB copies from Hot Tuning and 325i throttle body, intake and AFM should have that up to around 85-90rwkw. Which is plenty in a car that weighs 1050-1150kg.

I don't know. M20's don't really rev over 7k regardless of their capacity, and the 2.7/2.8 strokers with cams are making power right up there.

The power source is a bit special, too bad that this was the only good picture that I could find. It is powered by a 3.5 liter V8 from a Indy Racing League car. It puts out 530bhp at 11.000rpm, yep that's right. The engine has been mated to a F1 six speed gearbox that was used in a car driven by Alain Prost. That combined with the amazing low weight of the car, 800kg, it is capable of amazing things.

BEAMS E30

I'll be watching this build thread with great interest. A conversion I keep coming back to for my track car. If I ever do anything other than a 2.7-3.1 M20, it will be a BEAMS/6speed, or bolt my Saab B234 up to the E30's Getrag 240.

I bought the engine, gearbox, loom and computer as a complete setup which i had imported by a friend.

The total cost as it stands including purchase price of the car and all the driveline landed is $2100. So it is starting well.

E30, the new KE70.

hhmm could be interesting... keep us updates! keen to see how it turns out!

whats the size difference between the 86 and e30? are they much bigger?

OniKyan
29th July 2011, 03:01 PM
E30:

Wheelbase: 2,570mm
Length: 4,326mm
Width: 1,660mm
Height: 1,400mm
Weight 1070kg(S1 318i) - 1350kg(probably a wagon with all the excess wank)

AE86:

Wheelbase: 2,400mm
Length: 4,200mm
Width: 1630mm
Height: 1340mm
Weight: 1000kg-1100kg.

Not much between them at all, really.

Even with my AE86 right next to the E30, you can't tell the difference in size. Only 12.5cm in total length so there really isn't much in it.

In pictures, E30 do look bigger than they are though due to their well proportioned design.

you guys ever seen a s42b20 race engine from a e36? pretty much a m42 race modified to 2L with itbs making 300hp+

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/1/7/5/192604.jpg

http://www.m42club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=4749

i like the idea of making 200hp from a m42 stoked to 2L over a m20 stroked to 2.9L these days. could be done cheap enough for me and apparently only uses as much fuel as a stock m20b25. i got my stock m20b25+manual box in my last e30 down to 600kms from a 60L tank which is good for a m20. my current m20+auto box only gets 500kms a 60L tank.

S42B20's are the dopeness. BMW are gods when it comes to getting ridiculous power from N/A engines.

I'd love some fuel economy out of my 320i, it seems to get ~200-300km from a full tank, even if I'm driving like a grandma. Something has to be wrong. Might have to give my engine a service before I buy springs, I reckon.

Honestly have no idea. Couldn't find much information, besides those pictures and a bit on Sigma-Galant. Was hoping someone was able to shed some light on the idea.

I believe it's an Evo motor, 4G63?

I don't really know much about turbo trickery, though, I was thinking that it might work more efficiently like ITB's on an N/A but on the other hand, with each turbo only being powered by one cylinder's exhaust pulse, it might not be of any real gain. ????

with those 4 turbos youd have to tune the exhaust like you would normal headers to make the flow at certain rpm at a certain timing. lots of stuffing around for what would feel like no lag. i dont see how much boost those little things would be pushing. if its only 2 psi each it would be a waste of time. but if it was 4 psi each that would be awesome. 16psi boost with pretty much no lag

The $500(total build cost) beater.

Posted in the Off Topic thread back when I purchased the beast but want to turn it into a missile car for practice days.

Cost of purchase, $100, which by my calculations leaves me $400 to spend turning it into something slide-able. It already has mildly upgraded/lowered suspension and a sway bar installed in the front. What to do with leaf springs? Flip them upside down?

It runs dope and sounds pretty thug at higher RPM's. Has extractors and a standard 26/27 carb but I've got some 34mm Keihin CVK bike carbs laying around, could probably knock up a dodgy manifold myself for fuck all.

The biggest thing it needs is glass but being an Escort that could be pretty hard to find. Was thinking about using clear perspex or something similar for the rear windows, but a real windscreen and driver's door window.

Any other ideas on what I'll need to look at for it to be allowed on track?

Don't sell it, or if you do sell it buy a normal one. A 323i, or 318is, so you can thrash it and not worry about it being rare and shit.

im not into aftermarket kits, only oem for e30 unless it came stock on the car like alpina, hartage etc.

if i was going to pay for any kit for e30 id get a m3 evo replica kit. costs the same as other kits but you should be paying extra and getting wide body too. sometimes i think of selling my current e30, buying a 320i and putting a m3 evo kit on and putting a M50B25 + turbo in it.

I'm not a big fan of aftermarket kits either. I like the Breyton because it looks like the E30 should have come that way from factory. So smooth.

You would probably be able to do that build with the money you could get from your MT2.

Vance
30th August 2011, 08:01 PM
i know i could with the money BUT the mtech 2 is my daily and i can take it off the road to be able to do that. to be able to do it id have to buy the said new e30, buy the kit, buy the engine+all other needed gear to get it running, take holidays for a month and work on it the whole time. then sell my MT2 when the new e30 is ready.

realistically it isnt going to happen while i still have the fc, and dont have another car to drive in the meantime. its all just dreams

i think ill save for 6 months and sell the MT2 and buy a stock as a rock r32 gtr instead

$200 Daihatsu daily?

Vance

it would be more than a month if im still working and not taking holidays. and really i only want 1 modified car. if i get a gtr it will remain practically stock

How do you feel about the fender mirrors?

OniKyan
4th September 2011, 04:32 PM
The wheels, I believe are TRM C1 in 15x7 et25, which is considered to be a pretty ideal fitment for track use on E30's.

They're also available in 15x8 et20, for $396USD a set. Shipping couldn't be much more than $300, right? I can see why so many people run them. Looking like a good, cheap wheel with a relatively light weight. 15x8's are only 6.8kg each.

Forgive my ignorance and lack of effort to reblog that long ass post and filter out the images I'm not curious about, but, What is this car?

Opel Monza A. The coupe version of the Senator.

Basically a VB-VK Commodore coupe/hatch.

I believe the engine is an Opel C30.

3.0The 3.0 L (2969 cc) version was introduced in 1977 alongside the fuel-injected 2.5.
The carburated version had 150 hp (112 kW), while in the more popular fuel injected version, the 3.0 produced 181 PS (178 hp/132 kW) and 248 N·m (183 ft·lbf) in the Opel Monza GSE and Opel Senator (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Opel_Monza) 3.0E.
Bore was up to 95.0 mm (3.7 in), but stroke remained at 69.8 mm (2.7 in).
The 1986 Opel Omega 3000 / Vauxhall Carlton GSi introduced the latest version of the 3.0.
The injected engine produced 180 PS (177 hp/132 kW) and 240 N·m (177 ft·lbf).
Amongst the chages were larger valves and the change to Bosch Motronic.
It was later used in the Senator and Omega 3.0i.
In 1989, a DOHC 24 valve version with a variable length intake manifold (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DOHC) was introduced, with power increasing to 204 PS (150 kW) and 270 N·m.
The Omega Evo had a special Irmscher version of the 24v with an uprated head, forged internals producing 230 PS (169 kW; 227 hp)

If you can get over their extreme physical size, there's a few things you can do to shed the kg's.

Late model(square headlights) have smaller bumpers, you'd save 20kg here.
Late models also have an aluminum steering rack which is about 7kg lighter.
Complete A/C set up was about 30-40kg.
Power steering pump was around 5kg.
Interior is insanely bulky.

Ritmo Sereno BMW R100RS

http://www.bikeexif.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/ritmo-sereno.jpg

In the mid-70s, the BMW R100RS was the most radical motorcycle you could buy.
It was BMW’s answer to the relentless threat of large-capacity Japanese motorcycles, and it came with a seven-part fairing- a new style of bodywork that reportedly reduced side wind deflection by 60% over the standard S model. But it looked a little ungainly, and sales were unspectacular. This custom, however, does justice to BMW’s original vision—some 35 years later. And not surprisingly, it’s from Ritmo Sereno, the Japanese resto-mod specialist.

http://www.bikeexif.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/ritmo-sereno-1.jpg

Ritmo’s first objective with its 'RSR' was to reduce the weight down to 190 kg—a substantial drop from BMW’s claimed dry weight of 242 kg. The modified frame is powder coated blue, along with the wheels, as a nod to the BMW HP2. The graphics reflect the colors of the glorious 1970s BMW 3.5CSL Group 5 racing cars. The engine has been ported and polished, and the 2-into-1 exhaust system, painstakingly welded, is in stainless steel. It’s hard to find any parts that have not been modified or lightened; custom work includes the controls, the instrument holders, a new battery box and tweaked Öhlins shocks. The standard RS fairing, which always looked a little heavy, has been modified for a sleeker appearance.

http://www.bikeexif.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/ritmo-sereno-2.jpg

Ritmo Sereno has documented the build in detail: even if you don’t understand Japanese, the pictures are worth a thousand words.

BMW R0 Cafe Racer

http://www.bikeexif.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/bmw-r80-cafe-racer.jpg

If you’re into BMW café racers, you probably know the BMW Cafe (http://bmwcafe.blogspot.com/) blog, run by Dutchman Michiel de Molenaar. This BMW R80 is the bike that originally got Michiel hooked on building and riding old motorcycles, and shows what can be done with a small budget and a lot of inspiration. He started with a crashed 1988 model, which means it should have a 797 cc version of the classic boxer twin. But the previous owner had changed the original engine for a one-liter motor of unknown provenance. Then the gearbox packed up, so Michiel retro-fitted the transmission and kickstart from an R65—which also allowed him to run a smaller and lighter battery. The exhaust system is home-made, using an old Virago muffler and a one-dollar stainless salad bowl.

http://www.bikeexif.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/bmw-r80-cafe-racer-1.jpg

“The new rear subframe is made out of a chopped-up bicycle carrier I found in someone’s trash,” says Michiel. “The only really expensive part is the [Acewell] instrument. I wanted a rev counter, speedo and all the idiot lights, but I also wanted to have the most minimalistic cockpit I could find—so I decided to spend some money on that.” The clip-ons are ebay items and the rear sets came off an early 90s Honda sports bike of unknown description. The headlight is a modern Ural part, and the rear fender started life as a Honda CX500 front fender. As they say, “one man’s trash is another man’s treasure”—and Michiel has shown that you don’t need a huge bank balance to make a bike look like a million bucks.

Honda Monkey

http://www.bikeexif.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/honda-monkey.jpg

I get the occasional monkey or gorilla bike sent in for consideration. And to be honest, I’m never quite sure what to do with these machines. But this one is a cut above the rest, so I’ve included it here as a little light relief. It’s loosely based on Honda’s Z series platform, which apparently grew out of bikes designed to be ridden by children at Japanese amusement parks.

http://www.bikeexif.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/honda-monkey-1.jpg

Frenchman Hadrien Le Flanchec built this monkey over eight months, in his fifth-floor Parisian apartment. It’s not running the usual low-powered 50cc motor: Le Flanchec has fitted a 124cc Takegawa upgrade kit called the ‘Superhead+R’. (It’s hooked up to a 5-speed ‘box with a dry clutch.) The carb is a Keihin CR26, as you might find on a Honda CB350 or CB400, and when combined with a custom Japanese-made exhaust, the four-stroke motor produces around 20hp. That might not sound like much, but the bike weights only 75kg (165 lbs)—which means a power-to-weight ratio very similar to a Harley Sportster 883.

http://www.bikeexif.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/honda-monkey-2.jpg

The rest of the bike is built from top-shelf parts, including a Kitaco aluminum frame, Beringer and Brembo brake components, and a G-Craft Alpha swingarm. The tank is a genuine Honda item, painted in the same Candy Red shade as a 1969 CB750 and fitted with the logos from a CB750 K2. I’m no expert, but it looks like there’s some very trick engineering going on here—and I bet it’s

BMW K100 Custom

http://www.bikeexif.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/bmw-cafe-racer.jpg

I’ve always liked the look of BMW’s K-series motors. Simply because they’re boxy and when they first appeared, I thought they looked like something from Star Wars. The earlier R-series is well established as a café racer platform, but now the K-series is starting to gain favor. And this recent build from the Italian custom shop Abnormal Cycles (http://www.abnormalcycles.com/) shows what can be done with a little ingenuity.

The base is a BMW K100 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BMW_K100), a one-liter longitudinal four with Bosch fuel injection—marking BMW’s first major departure from the boxer twin layout. There’s around 90 hp on tap, a useful 20 hp increase over a Honda CB750, and Abnormal Cycles have kept the huge 22-liter tank too. Adding to the look are a custom exhaust system, new (and minimal) instrumentation and a classic round headlight. The front bikini fairing and side panelling have been removed, and a Ducati SportClassic-style seat unit fitted, upholstered in Alcantara fabric. It’s a simple and no doubt cost-effective conversion, but it works.

The BMW E30, an iconic and increasingly popular shape amongst petrol enthusiasts today. You have your purist, M3 driving type, then you have the half arsed modders who reckon an exhaust and some $500 wheels make your car the business, then you have people like Alexander Williams and his Old man, who are the ones behind the creation of this 413rwhp European perfection.

http://farm7.staticflickr.com/6236/6381877277_0dce986899_b.jpg

The following is what Alex had to tell us about the life of the E30.

“Where do I start haha. I grew up with my old man and his love for old school cars, this showed me the way to purchase a xy at the age of 15 in 2007. In early 2008 came to the conclusion of that I would not be able to daily the car so the search of a cheap and east car had started. I wanted a ke70 but they seemed to be the in thing at the time. The car needed to be little 4cyl, cheap yet able to play with. After alot of searching around I decided I wanted and e30. Later that day I posted on Boost cruising(out of all places) a wanted to buy add for an e30. A now good friend of mine and mini nutcase Sam Goodson spoke up of a e30 in his backyard he was to lazy to fix. So I got the old man in the car and next thing it was home. I drove the car for a year and thought i really do like these so it was time to sell up the falcon and invest in a project.

http://farm7.staticflickr.com/6233/6381880189_b1328069cd_b.jpg

After I sold the falcon I made the choice of wanting an e30 coupe to either buy half down or build from ground up how I want it and nothing else. I found a sr20 e30 for sale so once again the old man and I jumped in the car and had a look. The car turned out to be pretty straight forward but for what it was, it was over priced and the owner was not willing to compromise so we had the idea of building one and this is what its come to. I found a shell locally in December 2009 and then the long haul begun. It started out little and simple and a matter of a 1yr was spoken about. This soon blew out of proportion.

http://farm7.staticflickr.com/6032/6381875947_522209141c_b.jpg

The car turned out to a nearly two year project with alot of doubt from people of actually finishing it, with myself even listing it as a part out EOI for a matter for 3 hours then thinking what the hell am I doing. So I powered on with the build and glad I did.

The body work got all sorted during 2010 and then was painted on Christmas day 2010 and we then set a goal of making Drift Matsuri 2011 at Queensland raceway. This was where my bank started hating me. Anything and everything that could be brought new was. We learned the hard way the poor man pays twice so buying new was just easier. The amount of time over weekend and week nights spent got to the point of myself loosing sleep over if this was done or that was done or was this tight. If we didn’t make the date it wasn’t like we didn’t try.

http://farm7.staticflickr.com/6214/6381876575_6773bf0709_b.jpg

Up to the week before Matsuri the car was looking well on track, until work informed me I had to fly to Sydney and not return until the Friday night. I told my old man not to contact me about any dramas with the car as i needed to focus on work. This still didn’t help me keep focus, all that goes through your head is whats happening, will I make it, was it done right, will it last or will it break! So I fly in Friday night and get into the car and drive home. I drive in only to find my car on a trailer all ready and packed for a weekend which turned out to be the best weekend in the car community I’ve had/seen. The car got tuned on the Friday afternoon at midday making 413rwhp and it scared the living daylights out of me. The first time I drove it was around qr pits at 8pm on the Friday night with a lovely night sky upon us, only to wake up to bucketing down rain. Let me be the first to say, light car with horsepower in the rain is never a fun thing however I loved every moment I had. the relief the car is done and no more hassle and money has to be spend for a while was a good feeling but the satisfaction of completing such a long and different build to what we are used to was nothing shy of amazing, yes there was a lot of fighting, blood, sweat and tears but in the end that feeling you get words can’t describe it.

The car lasted all weekend with only a broken harmonic balancer late on Saturday afternoon and a broken axle early Sunday morning. We finished up the day around 3pm with nothing but smiles and the thought of we made Matsuri 2011. I guess a big factor in the build process of the car was that we did everything here at home, from panel work to paint to cooler piping to half cage. My father can do alot more then just mow the lawn and cook a good BBQ and I thank him so very much for the time and effort. Since Matsuri the car has been taken to a Friday night practice and still had no issue but broke another axle. The car is currently registered however is rocking a rear plate and will be driven on the road once i’m 100% comfortable with how the car performs and being legal to drive it, given i’m only 19, haha. So this is pretty much my last 4 year story and how Ive got the car where it is today.

Would have been nice to see it with the BMW M30B35 he was contemplating on but it's still dope. 1JZ just makes so much sense.

It gives me funny ideas. Pretty easy to get 1,000-2,000hp from some of those Turbo Cummins motors.

i do, but the ae86 is the priority right now. itll be finished in a few months anyway.

if i find a slicktop 325e 2 door for the right price i would have no choice but to buy it. then it would get the head drilled out to have the same oil drains as 325i, 325i cam + valve springs + intake, head studs, dirty t3/t4 hybrid bolted on the side.

I wouldn't mind a 2.7 bottom end to build up my spare B23. #731 head gives a higher compression than the 325i's #885 so would be suited to N/A. 180rwhp would be a pretty easy target though. Would be alright on the touge but not much of a psycho drift smoke machine.

With all that said, I definitely have to sort out the chassis and suspension first.
