Yew! Rally! Hot tip. If your chasing light weight cut the intrusion bars out of the doors saves you about 20ish kilos.
How do you like the silverstone S55's? Once you finish the S55's have a crack at Dunlop SP73's. By far the best steer tyre i have used.

Next on the list before next meeting:
Make side exaust (currently only has a muffler welded to the extractors)
Attemt to find a bigger diff
Fit KE70 carbie (has a ke55 one atm)
Cutting rear springs to match fronts
Make a Strut brace

Racing at another track in 2 weeks time il get more in-car footage for you guys

Got the guy to put a flange at the end of the extractors then up inbetween the floor/g-box Xmember/g-box then a flex join, muffler then dumps before the diff

Me and the old man raced the car today, we both went well. It was really wet, understeer central for most but with a little help from my hydro handbrake it was all good:

The sleeves in that kit, are they steel? Or do you weld on a small steel ring then sit the threaded sleeve on top of it? I used the HSD's for my conversion and I'm thinking about T3 for my van and bro's car.
lappy
19th September 2011, 10:48 AM
They are aluminium that sit on a steel ring thats weld on, I dont think it would cause any problems.
lappy
2nd October 2011, 10:41 PM
The decision has been made to mid mount the 3RZ as they come with a rear sump and also for weight distrobution purposes. I will make mounts from the 3RZ's standard engine mount placement to the chassis close to the firewall (where the erliers model corollas have idler arms) utilising the three holes already there. The front of the engine will be between the strut towers and the gear stick will be just behind the floor brace and all the firewall/trans tunnel to suit, the convertion will start in 2 weeks.
Watch this space!
Cheers Brenton.

Unfortunatly this will not be mid mounted due to the fact that the steering coloum and rack are in the way of the oil filter and engine mount if i were to do it, so i am just putting it straight in. This has been done in a ke38 wagon with no need to cut up trans tunnel and apparently shifter comes up in the standard hole. So now on the list is some hilux engine mounts, I've heard one lines up perfectly and the other will only need slight modification and i'll be making a new sump soon because the factory one hits the crossmember.
Stay tuned!

Time for some pics, thanks to the queen i worked the whole day on the car. My hilux engine mounts arrived and i dummied up some mounts with the engine sitting vertical (im now going to put it in with a lean like standard) I cut the tunnel out, if anyone else does this conversion it is possible without doing this just some slight massaging with a hammer will do and some crossmember spacing. The only way for the motor to miss the bonnet was too low to put a sump on it  Im talking like 10mm from the crank to the crossmember. I cant space the crossmember lower as i still need ground clearence as im racing off road atm. So I need to raise the engine and a gay bonnet bulge will be in order:

Tacked up my extractors today. Having the exaust on the drivers side is shit because its really hard to have the collector further back/lower especially with 1 3/4" pipes, so I moved it forward and came up with these:

Hopefully getting it running this weekend!
Nah I didn't, the guy on rollaclub that put a turbo 3RZ into a KE38 just turned his around and redrilled it making the pick up to suit. Making an alloy one was VERY time consuming! If I was to do it again I would cut the original one in half and turn the bottom half around and weld it back together, but it still would be close to the steering rack mounts. It is a tall engine, I will be modifying the bonnet as I'm not a fan of crossmember spacers, my sump is really small at the rear to get it as low as i could

I was thinking this too... Looks amazing I love every detail but I think your primaries will prove too long and risk flattening your power curve at higher rpm. Have a look at 7oxins experiences with his 7ag build.
What length are the primaries? I love your fabrication skills btw, so i dont mean to be too negative.
If it were me, Id use the talent you obviously have to make a custom inlet manifold that gets the inlet to the left side of the motor, away from your big primaries.

Have similar height issues with the 2azfe conversion, however I was lucky that the stock sump works perfectly and can be removed in car.
I also dont like the idea of crossmember spacers, mainly because I want to run it low and I dont want to have my lcas pointing upwards and create all kinds of bump steer.
Im looking at an a9x type scoop to get the bonnet clearance up where it needs to be.

As for the extractors they are 31" long (each within half an inch) which is what most of the aftermarket ones are, but they were 1 5/8" and I made mine 1 3/4" so it should be alright. I thought about doing the intake, but the forward facing TB's dont usually distribute the air evenly. This is fine if the engine is boosted but being NA the standard one does the job very well.
Thanks for all the comments and praise guys

You still havent explained anything about the passage of gasses through the exhaust. No rational reasoning, no evidence to back up your rude comments. I'm inclined to think you dont know what you are talking about. I could be like you and string a bunch of engine related words together, but then I wouldn't make sense either.
Hey Lappy Id really like to see the collector on those headers.

Matt I don't think he was trying to be rude. What he is saying is that the engine is made for stacks of lower down power and it's going into a light weight car. Therefore the no matter what extractor design it's going to pull from anywhere in the rev range regardless.

Well, the 2.7 litre engine at 5000 rpm will be volumetrically similar to the 1600 at 7000. So it may well relate more than you might think at first examination.
I'm just trying to instigate a technical discussion, and examine Lappys' reasoning in the hope that I may learn something. I guess I have learned that this is only the place for sarcasm and insults, not to learn anything. Its my fault, I expected Nick to engage in something other than putting shit on people.
Lappy, what kind of exhaust headers do the 3rz engines come with, are they factory 4-1 or 4-2-1 and what sort of primary length do they use? What have you designed your headers to do? I assume gas velocity will be increased by the smaller pipe size? Did you use a nice merge collector and what size pipe do you plan on running after it? Are you using a megaphone type arrangement or a straight pipe? Catalytic converter? Resonator?

It come out in 2 1/2" and will have one auger style muffler and the exaust will finish just after the drivers seat. The factory exaust manifold is a shitty log style and would be terrible, most of the aftermarket headers run 4-2-1. I chose the larger 1 3/4" primaries over 1 5/8" as later on i will be removing balence shafts, getting the rotating assembly balenced, bigger cams and valvesprings ect. I have made these to the best of my knowledge at the time, they might not be the perfect set-up, but I am still learning ways to improve. This is the first set ive made and constructive criticism is welcome.
On another note we got it running today! and found the radiator leaks badly, so a new one on the way. I should be able to have the full driveline in by the end of this weekend.

Hey thats great!
I envy your progress.
I see that they arent as freaky long as I thought now that I can see where they terminate. I think they will work fine, and the collector looks the business.
What is it with Toyota and completely failing to make good manifolds these days. I know a lot of Landcruiser manifolds are log style as well and the 2azfe has 4pipes of drastically unequal length, forced directly into a cat within about 6 inches of the 4th exhaust port. Cylinder 1 is maybe 14 inches and cylinder 4 is 6inches, and 2 an3 are in between. Plus they dont use a collector at all, and they just crimp the pipes to make them fit into the cat.

This thing is a torque powerhouse! 2nd gear starts no probs! Raced it a few weeks ago, video is getting edited by a mate soon. Ran flawless all day just, need a diff ratio change as it revs a bit too much on our local track. We are racing it tomorrow and got a diff centre today, but the flange to the tailshaft was different, so we will sort it out before next time. The wheel alignment was out a bit aswell last time so we evened it all up, threw it on a set of corner scales and played with the coilovers untill the rear wheel weights were even with me in it and got 45% over the rear wheels. It weighs 930kgs wet.

That is Awsome! His 1UZ KE gave me inspiration to do this. Ive got a 4AGZE daily but 3rz looks better! I though AE111 ITB's would be too small? Now I think about it the revs would be lower so airflow would be equal to say a BEAMS reving at 8-9k (extreamly rough figures) Thought about it for this car but I think I better keep the long runners. Did he make a custom sump and/or space the crossmember down?

nice conversion champ... i love it.
i cant tell if youve moved them or not, but id be worried about the exhaust heating up your brake and fuel lines there..... especially when you are gunning it on a rally track. Youd hate to cook your brake fluids to the rears.
similarly - id be worried about heat soaking the brake master and lines too from the extractors. Some heat shielding probably wouldnt go astray??
lappy
21st August 2012, 09:19 PM
Cheers. The fuel line is on the other side of the tunnel and we acutaully have some alfoil baking trays wrapped around the brake and clutch master cylinders, after the first race the plastic resivoirs were very soft and thats all we had. The runs only last around a minute and a half with a large break between runs (which we leave the bonnet open to cool it) so it hasnt been too much of an issue

Whiteline swaybars
T3 castor rods
4.5kg rear springs
6kg fronts
KYB short strokes in the rear
Took it out this weekend and struggled for the start of the day using mostly 3rd gear and doing a heap of limiter bashing going nowhere, then later on started using 4th and it kept it in the power range which is quite low (max hp at 4800) but due to the mass amounts of tourqe this thing has it loved it and just kept pulling. I didnt manage to get any in-car footage as the camera was flat :verysad:

looks awesome mate, i've got to do something similar with my new engine and exhaust set up. I kept my 20L tank with e85 for the 2 meetings it lasted it didn't burn as quick as i was told but you can never have enough, you going to have this ready for power cruise or does it not interest you?

I'm not even sure when power cruise is and I'm not fussed, there is still about 2 months to go as after its running I'm re-doing all of the suspension arms and then bodywork

Long time no update, still been working furiously on this but mostly on the little things that aren't worth posting. But for starters this is what has been happening:
Got my ECU:
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/5/3/7/509994.jpg
Made the top water pipe:
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/5/3/7/509995.jpg
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/5/3/7/509996.jpg
There has been plenty of time doing this:
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/5/3/7/509997.jpg
Spending way to much $$$ on these:
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/5/3/7/509998.jpg
New poddy:
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/5/3/7/509999.jpg
Found out that some variant tacomas (american hilux) have coil on plug so I snapped up a set of those as 1/2zz ones are too short:
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/5/3/7/510000.jpg
Now getting serious, suspension time! New chromo threaded arms and chromo rod ends for the equal length 4 link:
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/5/3/7/510001.jpg
A my new LCAs that are in progress:

Finished the front suspension today other than the tie rods and maybe steering knuckles
Made a set of rod end holders for the castor arm, same deal as the T3 ones
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/5/3/7/510122.jpg
All tacked up
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/5/3/7/510123.jpg
Welded with the additon of doubling plate on the castor rod mount
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/5/3/7/510124.jpg
Now here is my dilemma: This is the lock with the knuckles as they were (XT130 cut and shut to AE86 PS specs)
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/5/3/7/510125.jpg
Then I modified them by taking the ackerman out so both wheels have the same amount of lock. I get more inward facing lock on the inside wheel, but it has reduced the lock to this on the outside wheel:
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/5/3/7/510126.jpg
What do you guys reckon about shortening them more? There is still plenty of wheel clearance and the knuckles/tie rod doesn't go over centre/bind so I think I would be safe to do so? Beacuse there is enough room to get lock the same as the first wheel picture
Advise would be appreciated guys, cheers

Got my throttle body on and finished my cooler pipes:

Bought 8 15x9 -10 rotas and boy do they poke! Haha I will Putting a 40mm spacer on the rear so they match and making a set of massive flares, I'm quite happy as this is a small negetive compared to the amount of wheel clearance on lock and geometry. Haters gunna hate.

If any of the mods read this if could you change the title to '3RZ Turbo Ksev' that would be awsome!
Cleaned up and painted a lot of parts, made a new sump set up, catch can and tie rods. Put new clutch on bolted everything on, bought a 44 of E85 and spent more than most corollas are worth on lines and fittings. Massive thanks to Aidoksev on here for helping me pull out all the stops to get it going and way to many early morning finishes and Allstar Garage for the tune and all their help. The drift meet I've been trying to have it done by is next Sunday fathers day drifts 1/9/13 at collie so vids will be apper soon.

I took it out on the weekend and had the best time! It handles sooo good! out of the whole day I spun once, on the last run which proceeded to be a 360 exit haha
The judges love the angle I was getting, close to 90 from what they said. I qualified 2nd and got 4th after not being able to finish my last run because a tyre debeaded after a dirt drop. Still walked away with $250 for 4th and a lot of dead tyres!
On the down side it was getting hot and kept hitting temp limiter so I could only do the 3 judged corners then had to take it easy for the rest of the lap, but I have a twin core alloy radiator on the way as apposed to the single core copper one I have now

Cheers for the praise guys, a lot of hard work has been put into this rig to get it to this stage. As I said in the previous post the car was getting hot and I just got a dual core 56mm alloy radiator to put in with some decent coolant instead of the shit that was in it and will space the bonnet up at the rear and see how that goes. Ill just have to save a shit load for tyres from now on haha the next event is at Collie on the 5th and 6th of October so we'll see how it goes.

Was doing a few checks during the week and found this; the spacer came a little loose and snapped a stud, lucky I found this before it became a major problem!
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/514960.jpg
So with only a week till the next comp at Barbagallo and the car scrutineers not being so lenient about my open wheeler, I knocked up a flare template, cut them out and folded the lip over and stitched them on
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/514961.jpg
Didn't come up too bad. Not full stance shit, because my suspension actually functions. Shockworks' awesome quality set up has been one of the best addition to the car

Here is a small bit of footage form the last run of the day, spewing its the only one I got on the gopro. Blew a fan fuse, it got hot and temp cut kept bringing the limiter down so that's why there's only 2 short clips

Having some dramas with the head, It got hot as it blew the fan fuse on the last run so I parked it in the pit bay and let it run assuming the fan was still going, which would normally cool it down (its a 16" thermo) Meanwhile we proceeded to pack up and whatnot, next thing I look at the gauge and it was reading 280F so not good! took the head off to get it faced yesterday, only to find two broken valve lock collars and my engine guys says the valves aren't seating (not from overheating) and they might have stretched. So he is doing everything he can to have it all good by the weekend, but worst comes to worst I'll bang on the head of my spare motor and go hard. Fingers crossed it all pans out in my favor.

Word on the head today is one bent valve, most of the valves weren't seating properly and the valve springs are soft. So they are air bagging in parts from left, right and center to get it done, lucky they are pretty quite and able to do it for me.

Okay update time! so I pretty much gave up on this untill the new year, trying to save some cash ect.. But then ADGP round 2 was on at Barbagallo and after a few laughs with some mates I put an entry in, which turned out to be one of the best decisions I could have made. I managed to qualify 8th for the state comp, which is way higher than I would normally qualify, but ended getting knocked out in the first battle. Played around with tyres and rear suspension over the two days and made a large improvement due to the large amount of track time. I Would like to say thanks to Matt Russell for the tips and help!

2 rims are junked, tail light, rear qtr, bent axle, bent pan hard rod, bent front chassis to the point where the motor has moved across 20-30mm
So plans for this is to bash out and pull the chassis straight, fix it enough to drive it for a few more rounds as a missile while I build a panno to reshell into
Also put a gen 3 cover on it and posted on facebook for lols now alot of people think I put a turbo LS into it haha
