If anyone has some hot tips for someone just getting into the KE scene on where to start, would be much appreciated! Thanks!

Mint..
id be grabbing some cool jap wheels, some 14x7s or 8s (something to fit under stock gaurds well) ajps springs and kyb shocks... get that bad boy down a bit... keep the sun-shade on the rear window or even cut it so its only the top one, (as a little wing)

Nice clean start dude

ps i have some ssr meshies that would look prime on this for sale ;)
and you will need either ae86 front struts/brakes or t18 when you lower it which will allow you to go coilover or normal springs/shocks.
they will also suit ae86 ps which will give you more lock ( Helps with parking ;) )

Mika
15th June 2011, 01:39 PM
The SSR Meshies aren't on eBay are they? I'm looking at a set of white SSR Speed Star's, 14x6.5 with a +5 offset. Not too sure on what offset i should be looking for?

Sorry dude, I'm clueless. What are t18's?

Yeah, the rear window shade idea is sweet. Was thinking the same thing. Cutting it up as a rear wing.

Cheers for the help!

Mika
15th June 2011, 01:55 PM
Is a t18 a 2 door rolla?

Jacobxxx
15th June 2011, 02:23 PM
t18s (or te72) are pretty much a corolla. they came in 2 door hatchback in australia, have a 3tc 1.8ltr engine, t 50 gearbox and t series diff (which has lsd options) only downside to them was the steering box and looks that 90% of the population hate. haha

Tidy looking car!
No question is too silly, most of the time it would have been covered somewhere by someone so searching here and google is your friend.

Mika
15th June 2011, 02:28 PM
Awesome, it's frustrating knowing what i want. But rolla's are unknown territory for me. Haha, all the models & engine numbers.. etc.. Yeah dude, researching like hell. Getting on all the forums, this one, KE70.com, rollaclub, toymods and drift forums etc.

Good to know man, I try and do as much research as I can before i ask. Just hanging to get this car looking sweet. Cheers again!

very nice pick up man, soo clean! :) as far as offset goes search offset wheel calculator in google, this will let you check how different size/offset wheels will affects your guard clearance.

What do you guys think of these? I was told they would bolt straight into my car. Thanks!!

Mika
28th June 2011, 02:21 AM
after nothing too intense, just want the JDM look atm as the car isnt going to see the track or get driven hard. just want it low on some half decent coils with some nice offset rims and stretched rubber.

if anyone has any knowledge on these coils and if they would suit what i want to use them for that would be awesome!

thanks again guys!

Jacobxxx
28th June 2011, 10:48 AM
You'll need to convert your front end to ae86, with ae86 steering arms and brake set up.

If you want something softer order them with a 6kg or 7kg front spring then 4.5kg rear. Is nice daily stiff, and good for trackwork later.

Mika
28th June 2011, 02:19 PM
cheers dude, im talks with the supplier for BC coil overs. so we should be able to sort it out I hope! cheers for the spring rates!

Mika
28th June 2011, 02:56 PM
as you said dude, i will need all the AE86 gear to put them in.. I was talking to a suspension place in perth that can rebuild my shocks and kit them out as coil overs. so they are a direct bolt in replacement. they are a Bilstein insert. might just have to do that as im just after the look for now.

so both will more than likely work out the same price by the time i have got all the AE86 parts ill have to buy to get them in.

whatcamber
28th June 2011, 04:39 PM
How much did you pay for the ke70 looks clean !

Jacobxxx
28th June 2011, 04:56 PM
Yeah but ke70 brakes are dismall. AE86 ones are a bit bigger and then allows you to upgrade them with either a wilwood brake kit or a rx7 brake upgrade kit. ADM AE86 brakes are solid rotor, JDM AE86 brakes are vented rotors. AJPS in the site sponser section do RX7 caliper brackets and can arange some rotors hubs and calipers for you, Spirited Drive do the Wilwood kit, which comes with hubs and calipers/brackets, braided brake lines, you just need hubs and its close to a bolt in job.

Only thing is what wheel size you wish to run, Wilwood kit is generally 15's minimum, unless the 14's have the right offset for it (usually massive neg) RX7 makes more 14's an option. if you wanted to run 13's both ADM and JDM ae86 brakes are small enough for that

Mika
28th June 2011, 06:49 PM
WhatCamber: Cheers dude, she is a clean little bus. She does have 2 minor cosmetic dents. Other than that she is all sweet. Picked her up for 2k.

Jacobxxx: Thanks again dude, Massive help! Feel like such a dick.. Never looked this much into suspension before. It's always been a lowered spring setup.. Never run coil overs before! Looking at running a 15x7 fronts and 15x8 rears, with a 0 offset. Was informed I could run this spec wheel on the standard guard specs. Depending what i can find. Will probably aim for 15x7 all round with a 0 offset.

Well I think getting my original shocks kitted out and sleeved by my suspension shop will be the way to go. They send them away to Bilstein to get rebuilt as a coil over. So then they will be a direct bolt in replacement. Then I can look at finding the AE86 brake upgrade parts later on. Looking into all the suspension arms etc to get more lock etc.

Will this work out?

Jacobxxx
29th June 2011, 10:17 AM
Yeah those would be good, the ke70 strut has a different size shock insert than ae86, and ae86 brakes dont just bolt on. So get some ae86 front struts and then do the bilstein coilover conversion

Mika
29th June 2011, 02:52 PM
No worries. So im gonna have to sort some AE86 coil overs for the front and wait till i have all the gear for brakes etc to put them in. Rather than kitting out the KE70 ones and having to do the shocks all over again right? Could you list all the parts I'd need to fit the AE86 coil in the front?

What coils would you run, the BC coils off ebay? Or get some AE86 struts kitted out with a Bilstein kit?

AE86 can be the FWD corolla or the sprinter correct?

Cheers again Jacob, Legend!

Jacobxxx
29th June 2011, 03:05 PM
It comes down to personal choice, if i was a more patient person i'd go Blistein shocks on ae86 struts and then a sleeve kit with some camber tops, but the BC kit comes with all of that and they are brand new. Haven't heard any bad reviews from about BC Racing coilovers either. Whatever you choose you're looking at the same price really.

To bolt in BC coilovers you'll need;
AE86 Steering arms (Power steering or standard arms, p/s are shorter, giving you more lock and quicker steering)
AE86 Hubs
AE86 Rotors
AE86 Caliper Brackets
AE86 Calipers
AE86 Brake pads
Various bolts for everything

Can use your standard brake lines but while you're at it might be worthwhile getting some Braided Brake lines, (i think dave from AJPS can get some, i ordered them from some british company Hel/Goodridge and they come in whatever colour you like haha).

No it has to be the Sprinter version of the brakes. FWD ones are completely different set up!

Mika
29th June 2011, 04:06 PM
Awesome dude!! Ill start collecting those bits! Now that i know what I need for the front end I can start getting it all! I'll more than likely try find some sprinter front struts and get them rebuilt with a Bilstein kit.

What about the rear? What are you running? Just a short stroke shock and heavier spring setup? Do I need to do a Sprinter rear end also?

Jacobxxx
29th June 2011, 04:17 PM
Im just running short stroke and 4.5 kg springs i get a bit of axel tramp though, probably from clapped out bushes which i have some to replace but thats a lot of effort.

if you get these one http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/BC-Adjustable-Coilovers-suit-TOYOTA-SPRINTER-AE86-/200624157726?pt=AU_Car_Parts_Accessories&hash=item2eb621b41e
they come with rear shocks, springs and height adjustable spring seats.

Nah stick with your borgwarner diff rear end, generally they are stronger than the sprinter rear end (S Series diff), if you're going to be running 15 x 8 -+0 when you lower the car, your diff will move to one side (left i think?) and one wheel will be on guard and one wont, you can fix that with an adjustable panhard rod.

Mika
29th June 2011, 04:24 PM
Yeah, thats an all round kit. would i be best off just getting them? Aren't the rears to suit a Sprinter though? Or will the rear shocks bolt up to my KE70 rear end?

Jacobxxx
29th June 2011, 04:28 PM
The rear set up's are the same. So it'd all bolt in for you, But if you were looking at going the Blistein set up then you'll just have to find some springs and shocks to suit.

Mika
29th June 2011, 04:38 PM
sweet as, well now that i have the list of parts i need to make the fronts fit. ill probs just go the BC coil over kit. now knowing the rears just bolt in. ill be sweet.

So ill get:

The BC coil kit - http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/BC-Adjustable-Coilovers-suit-TOYOTA-SPRINTER-AE86-/200624157726?pt=AU_Car_Parts_Accessories&hash=item2eb621b41e#ht_2337wt_907

AE86 Steering arms (Power steering or standard arms, p/s are shorter, giving you more lock and quicker steering)
AE86 Hubs
AE86 Rotors
AE86 Caliper Brackets
AE86 Calipers
AE86 Brake pads
Various bolts for everything

And an aftermarket front sway bay and aftermarket panhard rod and ill be sweet!

This will be all ill need hey?

Cheers dude, HUGE help!

Jacobxxx
29th June 2011, 05:07 PM
Oh yeah wheel bearings haha

Mika
29th June 2011, 05:20 PM
fronts obviously?? so ya saying to do the bearings before installing it all?

would you recommend getting front and rear strut braces also?

Jacobxxx
29th June 2011, 05:35 PM
I currently dont run any strut braces, there's a thread in the tech articles that'd be worth a read on the effectivness of strut braces. Rear I'd just weld a bar from one tower to the other instead of a brace that uses the shock mounts.

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/showthread.php/23475-Choosing-body-braces.

Have a look at that. Good info

Mika
29th June 2011, 05:39 PM
cheers mate! straight up legend! had no clue on how to go about this suspension stuff! always been a lowered spring or airbags kinda guy! haha. massive help!

now to look for some 15's with a 0+/- offset!

cheers again!!

Mika
10th July 2011, 10:30 PM
does the suspension out of a AE101 4AGZE fit into the KE70 or is it only AE86 sprinter parts? Im looking at a complete front cut. Dont wanna go buy all these bits and then have them arrive on the front cut.

thanks!

s13 james
11th July 2011, 01:55 PM

Mika
11th July 2011, 11:52 PM

cheers!!

Mika
12th July 2011, 11:34 PM
Hey fella's!

Looking into a 4AGZE conversion. What gearboxes anyone who has done the conversion run? Was there any adapter plates involved? Or is it just easier to do a 4AGE conversion and turbo that later on?

Thanks,

Daniel.

same box as 4age ...t50

Jacobxxx
13th July 2011, 12:01 PM
If you're thrashing it a t50 probably won't last overly long.

s13 james
13th July 2011, 07:58 PM
dont hold me to it im not 100% but for turb'd set ups i think people run a w series box with bellhousing to suit 4ag

Mika
13th July 2011, 10:44 PM
yeah, the 4AGZE is out of a AE101. Was told I need a 4A-W series bellhousing adaptor and a W58 gearbox to do the conversion. Just wanted to make sure.

Just to confirm it for you, you can run T50 box behind your GZE, if you want a W5x box you will need a w5x --> 4a bellhousing
Just go with the T50 and see how you go,

Mika

Thanks for the feedback lads! Yeah, she is getting there. Waiting on my AE86 front end suspension bits to arrive, then my coil over kit will be ordered, then rims. Cant wait to get her closer to earth, some mean offset and stretch on her! Looking at 14x8ish rims, running around -10 fronts and +-0 rears.

Coil overs are finally ordered! There is a Japanese Car Day on in 3 weeks in Perth. So I'm aiming to have the wheels and suspension done for then!

I'm away for 2 weeks for work as of today. So its gonna be a mad rush on the last week to get her done!

Mika
27th September 2011, 02:21 PM
The standard 13 inch stockies wont fit over the AE86 brakes will they?

Nikkojoe
27th September 2011, 02:45 PM
They will. AE86 brakes aren't big, they did come out with 13" wheels too :P

Car looks mint! 4agze would be nice in this, and a t50 will be fine if you don't slam gears.

Coils are now in, only complication I had with the coil conversion was with the brakes. The old master cylinder blew out when the brakes were bled up. So I got a new one in there and all is sweet. Didnt bother lowering her yet, going to wait till the rims are here as they havent showed up yet... She does sit lower in the ass end even with the spring seats wound all the way up! Hanging for my rims to get here!!

Jacobxxx
14th October 2011, 11:43 AM
What most people find with those spring seats is they can't go low enough! But people i've heard having that issue were running 13's and super low.

Mika
14th October 2011, 12:09 PM
With where its sitting now and with the 110mm drop they have.. I think I would be tucking lug.. Haha. Should be able to set them up rad with the new wheels.

It drives sooo much differently.. Haha. As it would though.. Reminds me of rolling my old diff on chassis mini truck, she is nice and stiff now haha! But the Steering just pulls you into which ever way you turn now. Haha.

Just been running it as is atm. Rims are still to be put on. I just bought a house. Should have them on in the next few weeks. Dealing with a few cooling issues at present too. So once they are fixed. Ill get her down to the tyre shop!

There has been a few 4AGE conversions popping up around Perth im keen on looking into also. Ill keep you updated as soon as something happens!

Cheers!

Haven't had much progress on this as of late. Got some 195/50R15 Toyo's on the rims, had to fix the water pump as that shat itself.

Hoping to snowball it over the next 2 weeks. Get the rims and panhard rod on the car and get her lowered and wheel aligned. Pics to hopefully follow!

Little bit of an update:

- 4AGE 16v with box, harness and ECU from an 86 today. Getting one imported through a local wrecker. ORDERED.
- 4AGE mounting kit for engine and box with pedal box.

While I am waiting for the engine package to arrive ill be on the hunt for a KE71 pedal box.

Few more small updates. The engine came out a few nights back. So thats all out now, going to get the mounts in soon. Still waiting on the 4AGE & Gearbox package from Japan. So the car will be pretty well ready to have the engine and gearbox in once that arrives. Getting other bits and pieces like new front slotted rotors etc..

Few phone pics of the progress:

Damm such mint example of a KE70, Good Luck With the 4AGE conversion.
While you have the motor out, Give the engine bay a good clean up.
IE remove all the overflow tank, washer bottle, battery.wrap up the fuse box in a plastic bag.
Use a sponge or three and car wash & wax detergent and scrub the shit out of the bay and them hard to reach places then hose her out.
You will be very surprised on how it looks after mate.

Haha, Poo Brown Minter. Nice.

Well I have another update. Got my 4AGE engine package this afternoon, I had it imported from a wrecker in Perth. It's a bit ratty but will be getting a clean up. Started and ran well. It had a little flat spot, so the injectors will get a clean up and go from there. Compression was 130 psi across all. It's a touch low but not bad. It has been sitting for a while which won't help. It's going to need a new clutch, water pump, timing belt kit, hose kit and a few other bits and pieces. It's nice and clean inside the engine also and the wrecker said I've scored a TRD short shifter as well. Quite stoked! Now to get it in there!

Hey lads,

RWD 4AGE extractors? Can you get them off the shelf? I have had a quick look around, and I can old find FWD ones. Is it just a matter of cutting the flange and positioning to where it needs to be? Or are there off the shelf RWD 4AGE extractors you can buy?

130psi is rebuild territory. Minimum should be 142psi across all 4 and max factory around 180psi. Most second hand bigport 4ages i've had have been at least 160-170.

Which importer you get it from? (pm if you like)

Were they wet or dry tests?

The wrecker said the engine has been sitting for a while. So we will get it in there, run it up and test it again. Will be all good I'm sure. I'm happy with what I got, just keen to get it in there. If anything pops up, will cross that bridge when I come to it.

Sorted out more parts for it this weekend.

- eBay 52mm Radiator
- AJPS organic HD clutch
- Stainless Extractors
- Lukey 2.25 stainless muffler
- Single wire O2 Sensor

Now its just the wait for them all to turn up & getting it all together and in there. Hopefully the xmas freight it kind.. Haha.

These were dry (wet go higher, say 170-190). The place you got your motor from will usually put some wd40 in the bores before compression testing .

Just make sure you get the motor in fairly quick if you want to do it that way. It was very hard for me to get a replacement engine from them after finding out it was a dud from the first turn of the key after a 6week conversion ;)

Hope it all goes ok!

Hopefully the conversion will be done by Jan. It's a catch 22 really. I could of tried to get one privately, it will still would've been a lottery with anything second hand. This way I got to find out a little more prior to purchasing the engine package. Will see how it goes, if it flops. I'll be building a turbo 4AGE quicker than expected.. Haha.

Keep in mind that most cooling efficiency of that rad is between the inlet and outlet, so make sure it has good air flow there. I can't tell exactly from those pics but I know the opening in the early front rad support isn't as wide as that rad you got, so try make sure it's not covered if that makes sense...

I think I got you dude, the rad is bigger than the opening in the front end. So the edges of the rad might be tucked in behind that. We will run it lightly for a bit and see how it goes. There is plans to get a thermo setup on it also.

Cheers mate!

For the best cooling you will need to cover every hole to get the best pressure. It's not about how big the rad is

Mika

Now I'm a little lost. Cover every hole of? Cover it with the radiator?

Cheers.

stahlz_ae86
22nd January 2013, 07:42 PM
I think he means shroud the flow path to the rad. Forces all air to go through the core and not blow out the sides.

Mika
22nd January 2013, 07:51 PM
Ahhhh yeah, so any hole in the front end not covered by the rad needs to be blocked. Forcing the air flow to travel through the radiator. Got it.

R&D Mechanical
22nd January 2013, 08:19 PM
Correct Paul. Yes you are forcing the air through the rad but what you really want to do is create a pressure zone inside the bay sucking the air through the rad. Its very complicated. Just remember to laugh when you see massive intercoolers hanging out of peoples cars and have them complain about hot air still haha

stahlz_ae86
22nd January 2013, 08:29 PM
I laugh when I see oil coolers mounted in front of intercoolers too. My old track car I mounted the oil cooler in front of the rad where the thermo sucked the air through (worked quite well), but with an intercooler on the new one I don't have the space so it will be down low off to the drivers side (SR). Madhouse lip will be assisting air up to three important things, oil cooler, intercooler/rad zone and air pipe going up into big airbox before the turbo. If everything is laid out correctly with efficiency in mind you will get the most out of good quality parts like that alloy rad.

Mika
22nd January 2013, 08:44 PM
Thanks for your advice lads!

Is there any proper way of doing this? Or just to simply block any holes that aren't covered by the radiator? I figured out it was a little big when I had a look at some other setups. It was a bit of a rushed purchase. Hopefully we can get it working nice and efficiently!

Cheers!

foam is what is used in the factory around the rad. Best try that first

R&D Mechanical
22nd January 2013, 09:11 PM
it will be fine with a na motor. Our car had just an ae86 rad and was turbo and it was alright in short burst of flat throttle

Mika

Expand-a-foam? I am looking to turbo this down the track. So will be good to sort it now I guess! Any more than a short burst and she would creep up on the temp gauge?

R&D Mechanical
22nd January 2013, 09:34 PM
well mallala was flat out limiter most the track with a small cool down. No to explandafoam, http://images.drillspot.com/pimages/7671/767103_300.jpg

So I just cover up all the little holes in the rad support/front panel with that tape foam?

R&D Mechanical
22nd January 2013, 09:58 PM
Yep. When you have the rad in put it around the rad where there is gap. you can get flat stuff as will for the holes. The tape is mainly for around the rad for a snug fit.

Mika
22nd January 2013, 10:05 PM
Ahhh got ya, just basically sealing that big hole in the radiator support panel to the radiator. So no air escapes through the gap between the radiator and radiator support panel.

Here is a few pics of the last parts we were waiting on to arrive all fitted up. Ended up using 1998 Supra top rad mounts. Worked a treat! The other part was a chrome spark plug cover, which I think I'm going to sticker wrap.. Not too keen on the chrome!

Did another comp test after the motor has had some love and been run up a fair few times. When we first tested it at the wreckers prior to buying it the compression was at 130psi, the latest compression test came back at 165psi over all cylinders. So we are pretty happy with that result!

Still waiting for the surge tank I am getting made up to be finished, hopefully this weekend that will be ready. While that is happening we are finishing off the fuel system still, having an issue with the alternator charge light which we are sorting, then its off for exhaust early next week. After that, it will be finished.

Keen.

Found what the problem with was with the running rich fault. Was the ECU. So going to call the place that I got the gear from, see if they can help us out. If not I have a few ECU leads I can look into. If all fails, I'll source a Power FC.

Sorry for the late reply mate, I got hooked up through a friend for my intake pipe and surge tank. I'll see if he is keen to make a few and sell them.

On another note, looks like the T50 setup was fail. Tried to get away with putting a new set of synchro through the box. Didn't last long. Gearbox is getting progressively noisier. So will be looking at doing the W55 conversion sooner than I had hoped. Keen to get it out of the way so I can start having some fun with it. Started collecting parts for a W series box conversion. I have got a hold of a W series talishaft yoke. Next will be getting a box, then a nite parts bellhousing adaptor. Keen to get this box sorted and have some fun with her.

Today's haul. Cheers Craig aka Cooter, for hooking us up and answering all my rookie questions about the T series diff. Picked up a stocker KE70 diff and a T series diff that needs an overhaul. The welded KE diff's will get me by till the T series is built. Cheers again mate!

Hey guys,

I'm doing a W series box conversion atm, just wondering what box is the most commonly used box out of the W series boxes. I've been told that the W55 gearbox is 480mm from the front of the box to gear lever position, and the W57 gearbox is 630mm from the front of the box to gear lever position.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Also made a rear roof spoiler the other day out of another rear louvre I had lying about. I'm just going to give it a freshen up with some matte black paint. Trying to find some proper clips for it, with the company going bust makes it hard. I have seen a few threads on here with guys improvising some mounts. So if all else fails ill be doing that.

Your KE is rad dude, clean conversion! Mine started out much the same. Just gotta keep emptying your wallet onto it and she will grow.. Haha.

I just put it into my local suspension shop, i don't have the tools at home, or the time to do this work. They hooked it all up for me. Sorry I'm no help with that. I'm sure a post in the Tech Questions section could get it sorted out for you!

Not much has happened with this, just been enjoying it.

Bought a pair of these seats, just sorting some mounts for them.

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/1/3/8/4/5/523063.jpg

Just recently my heater core blew and replaced that yesterday. The clutch fan isn't that great on it, i have got a custom ally shroud made to cup my radiator to mount a 12" thermo onto which I'll hopefully have on the car this weekend.

The the next project is building a Zenki T18 diff I have in the garage.

They'll be fine dude, heaps of room either end. Looking at doing a front on rear conversion at some point. Don't want to go too crazy though, the 16v will struggle to slide em! Haha.
