OMG!!!!! I guess this is why the younger generation think that the popularity of the AE86 is totally because of Initial D(no offence Mickey) and the wanky theory of takumi tax!

Check the Guiness book of records, most number of victories in a racing class from starts......100%

International Group A winner

When I bought my AE86 15 years ago, Group A and international circuit racing (n2, clubman cup) is what influenced me.....Initial D....wtf...hadn't even heard of it!!

AE86 the REAL lightweight rwd Toyota...NOT the pretender ;)

Actually keiichi's drift videos got me into the ae86, not initial d. although im still new to the scene I like the car for what it is, a cheap, lightweight rwd fast performer. I'm not into 'cult' cars

Clinton

thats what group A was all about. the fact you could buy the actual cars they raced in. they werent some generic body with pop rivited panels onto it like the v8 supercars are now.

Yeah dude, no offence at all was meant. Just I'm an old fart and been into 86's for along time, Back when I first got mine so many people would ask what it was, they had never heard of a Levin! I'm amazed that so many people don't know the history of the 86 before Initial D!

If I stop being super lazy I'll scan some JDM group A pics I have......sweet Rays 86 :)

Original Bob Holden car under restoration at Road and Track (~2005) unsure of progress todate...

http://www.roadandtrack.net.au/Gallery/Images/image-0001.jpg
Australia's very first Group A AE86 Sprinter, one of 4 built & raced by Bob Holden. Whislt Bob raced the car extensively in the Australan Touring Car series form 1984 to 1992, he also shipped it to New Zealand, & Europe to compete in world touring car events. Undoubtedly our most travelled and original Gp A car. Currently under restoration.

Australias very first Group A AE86 Sprinter during restoration. A replacement front floor is being fitted (2005).

Another ex Bob Holden Group A Sprinter being towed away to have a new front cut & turret fitted. In 2004 it was badly smashed at Mallala Raceway in South Aust. Under restoration.

Bob Holden AE86 in its hey-day. This time at the Spa 24 hour race (Belguim) in 1988. This car was raced at the famous Spa and Nurburgring circuits before being bought back to Australia for the remainder of the ATCC season. Currently undergoing full restoration.

http://www.roadandtrack.net.au/Gallery/Images/image-0049.jpg
Group A, AE86 in preparation for painting. After a race career spanning over 20 years, It needed lots of new panels to get it looking good; floorpan, left rear ¼ , radiator support & lower crossmember, and right front wing.

http://www.roadandtrack.net.au/Gallery/Images/image-0050.jpg
TOM's AE82 FX-GT being scrutineered for Bathurst 1000 race, 1992. This famous race car was built by TOMS Japan to allow them to compete in the UK and Europe in the international Group A category, this being quite different to the Japanese only, GpN , where they had lots of experience. In the hands of Chris Dowsett, & prepared by TOMS UK, it won its class in the British Touring Car Championships for 1988 & 89, narrowly missing the outright win in 1988. An occasional co-driver was Tiff Needell, well known from his time on the BBC's "Top Gear" program. Apart from some test laps of Qld Raceway in late 2006, it was last raced at Bathurst 1993, and is currently being restored.

This Rob Nobels AE86 coupe was piloted by Mike van der Raadt and was a very competitive car in the Dutch Corolla Cup and Super Tourer - Group A class.

I don't have any pictures, but I believe Mal Rea ran the car at Bathurst 1991 as #79 with Brian Selby co-driving and then Mal entered the same car at Bathurst 1993 as #99 with Greg Woodrow & Steve Cramp driving.

I'm pretty sure it wasn't a Bob Holden car, so I guess it was either imported or ex-TTA. One of the TTA 86s is now at the musuem in Bathurst and there is another one being restored in Sydney or Melbourne. I'd love to know where the third one ended up.

Hmm, since this is a Group A AE86 thread I thought I might throw this out for anyone looking at buying one.

A rally guy I know has apprently a Group A 4AGE that was used at Bathurst. Been told its in FWD configuration I think, likes 9,000RPM and makes a fair few horsepower. And also in decent condition.

If someones interested I could always look into getting a number for you, but like I said I haven't seen the motor, just been told its a beast of a 4AGE.

Ok, just rang one of the guys who knows a bit about the engine. This is from what he is saying, not from what I know, just to clear things up.

Genuine TRD Europe 4AGE engine. TRD Rods, cams etc. FWD configuration. Standard plenum, nothing like quad throttles. I am pretty sure he said 16V. Likes 9,000RPM. Makes a good bit of horsepower for an NA 4AGE, trying to chase some sort of ball park for figures.

Is arriving in Adelaide tomorrow. I have asked him to try and get contact numbers and more detailed figures for me as soon as possible.

The seller is apparently keen to sell. So if you are genuinely interested let me know and I could always pass on your number for you.

You're not wrong there mate!!!!

The Valvoline stickers above the numbers point to 1994. The pitlane shot at EC might be 1992. I'm pretty sure that Holden #13 & Conway #79 are both the sister car to mine, which is now being restored by TerryO. That car is also the one on a jack under the truck annex. My car is directly in front, in it's 1987 livery.

I am intrigued by the Matthews #99. Which car is this? Is it mine or TerryO's or is it the car Mal Rea built in late 1991?

im loving these pics! keep them coming

any info and specs on these cars?

The cars all ran 4A-GE with close ratio T-50 and T series disc brake rear end. From 1984-1990 they had to run the standard plenum chamber and factory manifolds. From 1991-1992 they were allowed to run quad throttle bodies and extractors. Most cars ran side exhausts and were LOUD! The works cars were revving to 9000rpm and making 195hp.

AP racing brakes were homologated, 4 piston calipers and ventilated rotors up to 280mm x 28mm up front and 2 piston claipers and up to 267mm ventilated rotors on the rear.

Fully adjustable, rose jointed suspension all around with fabricated arms and Bilstein or Koni dampers.

They ran all standard bodywork with full glass. Passenger seats and carpet and trim were removed. Minimum weight was 800kg, but I don't think anyone ever got down to that, 860kg was about it.

Craziest thing!

This car, owned at the time by David Ratcliff (Ratcliff transport spares) is best mates with my girlfriends dad and he's been telling me all about how they used to race at Bathurst and he showed me tonight that he's still got the pit tickets for 1987. He's been trying to find all the photos of it and when we find them i'll scan them up

He was saying that even though they weren't backed by Toyota they would still supply all the motors and everything. One time they couldn't find any toyota brand oil chucked some other stuff in and on the way out of the pits misshifted and blew the motor and quickly had to pour TRD oil through it too make sure they wouldn't get blamed

Also when they brought the car in from Japan it had to be cut in half and then they had to weld it together so it would pass for use in Aus, thought this was crazy.

Anyways thought this was awesome, anyone have anymore photos of the Ratcliff 86?

You're not wrong, i haven't seen most of those pics before, quality stuff! That's the sister car to mine, which is currently being restored by TerryO, i'll send him the link. I'm not sure if it's Bathurst '92 or '93.

As it's Tooheys 1000 was 1988-1995 (James Hardie 1000 was 1982-1987)
Don't think Bob Holden drove in 1993? (Is yours Ted Dunford/Brad Wright entry?)

Holden/Rogers/Jones (http://www.uniquecarsandparts.com.au/bathurst_1992.htm) - 1992

Holden/Aaltonen* (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rauno_Aaltonen)/Rogers - 1991
Bob Holden/Mike Conway - 1990
Holden/McAndrew/Hall - 1989
Holden/Beck/Faneco - 1988

Bob Holden won 1.6ltr class Bathurst 1987
(with Bate/Willmington/Kimber-Smith)

Bob Holden/Geoff Kimber-Smith - 1986
Bob Holden/Glenn Clark - 1985
Bob Holden/Alexandra Surplice - 1984

My car ran at Bathurst as follows:-

1986 - McClelland/Nightingale - DNF
1987 - Bob Holden's T-car, ran in practice, not in the race.
1988 - Rogers/Jones - DNF
1989 - Rogers/Jones - DNF
1990 - didn't go to Bathurst
1991 - Wright/Dunford - 4th in class
1992 - Easton/Stratton/Sala - 3rd in class
1993 - Easton/Kratzmann - DNF

I would be quite keen to work on a set of replica decals (one off) for a Bathurst Replica AE86.

If anyone in Brisbane is keen to start working on this, I would be happy to have a chat and see what we can do.

try www.autopics.com.au or http://www.supertouringregister.com/ they may have photos. I believe the car ran a 3S-GE with a 6 speed X-trac with sequential shift and front wheel drive. Class regs dictated minimum weight of 950kg.

There were two cars, Colin bond drove one and John Smith drove the other. The team was disbanded after 1993 and the cars were sold to a private team, Inspired Racing, and one of the drivers was Malinda Price. I can't remember the other driver's name. One of the cars came onto the market several years ago, it wasn't cheap and it need restoration.

Any Idea what size and offset the wheels were on the caltex car?

From the Super Touring website, "The maximum width of the complete wheel is of 9 inches; the complete wheel diameter is not to exceed 650 mm."

Andrew Reid was Malinda Price's teammate in the 1995 season. It appears that was the last time the cars were raced. I'm told that apart from the engine and the body, most of the hardware from these cars was then used to build the Hyundais. Sad!

(I trimmed the pics to TTA AE86 and Bob Holden Mk2 Escort)

Well my g/f and i were bored yesterday so we took the 3hour drive from Sydney up to Bathurst...so i could check out the track for the speed weekend later in the year.... go to the museum.... and jsut get away from sydney..

i snooped around under it and it upset me abit more, as the car looks good from the outside, but really it was in poor condition:

The Biante Touring Car Master Series was originally cut off at 1972, they extended it to 1973 and have just now extended it to 1974. There is talk that they are going to extend it 1976. So to answer your question, no, Sprinters won't be allowed in anytime soon.

The Group C Touring Car Association run a series for Group C Touring Cars from 1973 - 1984 & Group A Touring Cars from 1982 - 1992. The series is strictly for genuine cars only, no replicas. There are VK & VL Commodores running and DR30 & HR31 Skylines. A pair of R32 Godzillas have recently joined the series, the '92 Bathurst winning Winfield Car and the '92 Sandown 500 winning GIO car.

I'll be running both my Sprinters in that series in 2011.

My car ran at Bathurst as follows:-

1986 - McClelland/Nightingale - DNF
1987 - Bob Holden's T-car, ran in practice, not in the race.
1988 - Rogers/Jones - DNF
1989 - Rogers/Jones - DNF
1990 - didn't go to Bathurst
1991 - Wright/Dunford - 4th in class
1992 - Easton/Stratton/Sala - 3rd in class
1993 - Easton/Kratzmann - DNF

I know the mechanic that Kurt Kratzmann brought along with him in 1993. His name is brian. Apparently a rear main seal went during the race, which somehow they fixed only for something else to let go. Is this correct? Kratzmann is a really good driver he has had a lot of success in Porsches in more recent years.

On a tangent... Looking at Appendix B in the TCM regs, I see Escorts and 510s only have "4 cylinder up to 2000cc" listed as the specified engine. Does that mean they can run anything from the manufacturer which fits those criteria? Imagine if a TA22 could be homologated with the works style flares and aero, with a BEAMS, wilwoods under 9" watanabes.... Or a KE15 with a 20v, or KE25 with the 3S... Would make the sub 2l category interesting and still represent the era well.

The Datsun 510 that competes in the series has an SR20.

Couple references that I would recommend would be the Homologation documents A-5179 "2-Door Levin Coupe" (while A-5180 "AE86 Corolla 1600GT 3-door")
Also the TRD Corolla Bible which lists all the Group A parts and modifications as per TRD, however not everyone followed these to the letter.
The Bathurst year books have some pics, times and results. Do you have the CAMS logbook to accompany it? should have all owners/drivers and competition lineage.
Maybe get in contact with TerryO (Road&Track (www.roadandtrack.net.au/)), GroupA (David Patterson (http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/member.php/1028-Group-A) ) and or Stephen Toph (#0000023 (http://www.users.on.net/~sprintertrd/default.htm)) who currently have in their possession or have previously restored Group A cars.

TTA+1 - ST162 Celica - not available

It should be a good event with many of the other old race Toyotas and drivers in the one place.

http://www.musclecarmasters.com.au/

Finally, the above car (TTA2) was the first of the two GT coupes campaigned between 1985 and 1989, this one seeing its final race at Bathurst in 1987 after coming to a grizly end at Skyline in the wet. The AE82's were coming, so the team manager saw fit to donate this car to the Bathurst TAFE who faithfully restored it and is now on display at the museum.

that doesn't look much like a race car engine bay.

nearly looks like a FWD model timing cover? (should be the original factory RWD item?)
radiator, looks like it was plucked from the wreckers?
battery in the engine bay, surely even 25years ago they knew that relocating it was a good idea?
air filter on the simply bend, location is far less then ideal, surely even a car from 25years ago should have a proper intake set-up.
emission gear?

probably doesnt really matter but would have been nice for it to be proper and original.

dear AE71,

put down the crack pipe son.
see there was this thing called GROUP A regulations and they were strict on what can and cant be done to a car for racing. so that means that the car would look very similar to the average joe six-packs mobile on the street.
homologation. google it, its a wonderful thing.

ditto, that was a very polite way to deal with ignorance. perhaps those of us that know better, should clarify matters. i'll start with this....

Group A was a FIA category from 1984 to 1993 that theoretically allowed near identical production based touring cars to race or rally almost anywhere in the world (bascially everywhere except USA who did not asssociate with FIA in those days).
Each car maker could "homologate" a car and parts for it, provided pre-set numbers had been made and sold to the public. There were numerous report of "creativity" when getting homologation approved, but in the main, the commonly seen cars were standard models with pre-approved modifications. In essence, they had to look stock externally so buying public could relate to them, but selected mechanical mods were allowed, using either homologated parts (such as AP racing brakes, close ratio gearboxes) or using 'freedoms" in the rules, eg exhaust manifolds after 1990
The Australian , British, New Zealand , Asian, Japanese & European Touring car championships were all contested by GpA cars in that period
Each country could interpret the FIA rules, but rarely were there huge differences. However, for example, some cars coming from Japan to here were seen as "very liberal". The homologation system allowed cars sold in other countries to race here, eg the AE86 Levin notchback. Cars like my AE86 racer were sold new here as a "sprinter", but converted to GpA Levin specs using crates of parts especially sent over.
Cars were generally homogated by the manufacturer when they were first built/sold, then that was updated each year or so as new models were released (called variant options). Some manufacturers stopped homologating cars and parts a few years after they were first built, as they were usually starting to concentrate on the next model. The FIA 'homologation papers" (detailed specs) can still be bought from CAMS, and every racer had to have their own copy to refer to, when the scrutineers started asking tricky questions on race day.
Countries like Japan had a separate and totally different set of rules (Group N2) for their own internal championship. These were not GroupA cars, and could not race outside japan. They approximate Australias "improved production" class.
In theory, a dead stock car straight off the sales lot, could get a GpA logbook , but of course, they would not be competitive then (or now)

i hope this helps clear up why some real GpA cars look relatively standard, and dont have all the "goodies" that can now be bought

I must say ae71, you have an eye for detail.
There has been enough comment about these production vehicles painted up for racing, but I will clarify the car as pictured at the Bathurst Motorsport Museum is a 2 times class winner at Bathurst and was last raced at Bathurst in 1987 when it was all but destroyed just before Skyline after loosing grip in the rain.
Rather than drag it onto the transporter to take back to Melbourne, the car was subsequently donated by Toyota to the Bathurst TAFE who rebuilt it on a very small budget using what parts they could find.
Yes, the timing cover has been replaced using a FWD cover, the radiator is not the same as original but it fits, the airbox would have been destroyed and like hens teeth to find another jdm cleaner and as such looks like they improvised using a common ram filter on the intake tube. The battery was always located in the LHF corner and yes there was emmision gear fitted but not functional.
This car is now owned by the Bathurst Council for the Museum display, however I will have this car at Eastern Creek MCM in September with the other TTA cars I have mustered where more people can enjoy what these represent.

Under request by the Museum, I will make some changes to get this back to and as close to original as a favour for the loan, any donations of correct parts would be appreciated. TRD leads, ae86 radiator, jdm airfilter box and a rwd front cover if you can help out. Thanks

C U all there.

thats good to know dude!
looking at it with some mismatched bits i would have put it down to "its a race car, and sometimes shit gets fucked up and you used what fits instead" in regards to the timing cover, pod filter, washer etc etc.
still looks fantastic in the museum and would be awesome if the cars were reunited ;)

I just googled FISA A-5180 and found the document myself. A very basic document, but I guess it did the job. Much more info in the TRD bible but the FISA A-5180 did show a few things not in the bible.

The TRD bible does show the exhaust in the Group A section. For "race" it would be just a flex joint and a side pipe, no muffler. Comes out the side probably just behind the centre bearing. For group-A "rally" they have a muffler, over the diff and out the back. Muffler in normal position behind axle.

the #74 "binding" car is not mine, but the other FX-GT that Bob Holden still own (red roll cage is the give-away of which car it is). it was made out of "spares" from TOM's uk stuff + a pipe of TRD stuff Bob had at the time. i'd guess at late 91 or early 1992.
car #75 is Frank Binding at Bathurst 1993. the last significant race for that car. I now own this
The TOM'S car is mine which i still own. taken at coppice corner at donnington park, 1988 with Phil Dowsett driving I think. class win, BTCC that year
I think the John Smith #32 car is the 1st one bought here by Toyota for TTA, and currently owned by Peter Helihern in Warwick.

I have looked all the way through this thread and havnt seen any pop up tureno models. Im guessing they were too expensive to fix and heavy with the motors etc. The only reason I'm looking is because i have this old rally shell, it is a genuin Tureno and did compete as such. on its last outing it had a bump takint out the front right. It was repaired as a regular 86 as seen in the latest photos. Here are some photos of it.

2 of the blue Fujitsui sponsored Supras came to australia after Spa 24 hr race 1989. one was eventually stripped and crushed to avoid paying duties. the other one survives in the hands of John Smith, one of its drivers from Toyota Team Australia days. John managed to beat the ex Gibson racing Winfield "Godzilla" at the recent Eastern Creek race meeting, so that was a very credible effort for a old 7M powered car.

Both for space and weight considerations to mount further inboard effectively FMR (front-mid-mounted, rear-wheel-drive)
Smaller capacity had less restrictions (over 480hp (357kw) with a 43mm intake restrictor) and overall mass 1100kg min.

thats Phil Dowsett driving my #70 car . I've still got that front bumper hanging in my workshop and the color/paint scheme on the car is basically as it was then, sponsor decals differ of course, as its still in 93 bathurst livery.

The wheels look too big for Group A, should be 15" x 6", or maybe 6.5". But it's good to see the history of AE86 (and Sports 800, 2000GT) getting recognition from Toyota in various countries with introduction of ZN6. Just recently it was the first time Toyota Australia ever mentioned AE86 and called it a "Corolla".
