ae-71 and sprinter T-50s are tottaly compatible, however with T-18s they have a different amount of spines on the input shaft so they are no good.

Spacers? wtf?

How will that make a difference in splines on a shaft fit?

I know the thread's a bit old but-
The T50 from a AE86 has more input splines and uses cylindrical rollers compared to all the other T50's which use deep groove radial bearings and have less splines. I'm pretty sure the bolt patterns are the same on the bell housing but are not interchangable!!!!

ill just mention that there are two types of T-50.

1 is the box which comes standard in 86s. has 22 splines on the output shaft, it is the stronger of the two

the other is the 20 spline version, came in a weaker RWD model car (cant remember what it was)

but the easiest way to remember the 22 spline box is the split in the case in the centre section of the box housing between the bell housing and the output shaft case.

there are details on bill sherwoods site from memory.
