Most high performance cars are using Motul oil, does anyone know if Motul make anything suitable for the 4AG?

thats a bit extreme for these engines isnt it?
i would say better suited to bigger, more powerful turbo engines...

You guys think HPR15 would be suited to the 20V also?

DRFT - 86
7th June 2005, 01:42 PM
yeh it probably would....... full synthetic may be the go with a 20V though, not sure...

sic86
7th June 2005, 07:45 PM
If it is running good and is in good nick I would probably go for the HPR 10

Far out, that is thick!!! http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/ohmy.gif HPR 15 is 15w/60. The first number is how thick the oil is at start up and the second one is how thick it is when warm

I used penzoil straight 50w non synth in mine when it ran. Anything else would thin out too much on the track. Probably should invest in an oil cooler.

I know that one you are talking about know, the Shell Helix Sport 50. That is way to thick. Most people used that in their tuned up 308's. Belive me, change it to something thinner (if shell, shell helix plus (blueish colour bottle $25.99 5L) and the car will perform even rev quicker

Did a lil research and i'm switchin to castrol synthetic R 10-60w
I was using mobil 1 5-50w... they're both pretty good i reckon.... the castrol is probably a lil better on the track as it was made for racing and modified high compression engines...

Yeah, that's a nice oil, Castrol recommends that oil for Track Day Cars but retails for $65

What I was taught is that the first number (5w/10w/15w etc) is the oil viscosity at the shown heat range (30/40/50/60/70 etc)

Personally I use:

Motul 5w-40 Crono 300/ Mobile One 5w-50 on the track
Motul 10w-40 4100 Turbolight/ Castrol Synthetic R 10-60 during winter
Pretty much whatever goes during summer (I change every 4000-5000km)

Redline Antishock gear oil for the box

Penzoil Limslip out back

Could be wrong about that range crap, i've heard so many different explinations... but the Castrol rep can't be wrong huh?

Errr... not 100% sure what you were tryin to say but it sounds like theres a mistake. The first number is the low temp rating and the second number is the high temp rating.
These days, we use multigrade oils where there are different chemicals combined to give different lubrication properties at different temperatures. Basically it makes the oil able to perform in a different conditions...
5w is good for anything from -10degrees C or so... where 30w is good for anything above 30degrees C. But for a car that sees the redline very often, its good to use something with a lil more protection high up in the temp range...
Thats my understanding anyways....

i used to use Castrol GTX2 25w-50... $16 for 5L.

i failed to see the point of spending $60 a bottle on oil that i changed every 2000kms anyway. http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/blink.gif

Dont think you can go past Motul 300V Chrono Synthetic if you want to look after you Motor ...... Have run it in our S13 Drift car and just took the motor out for a freshen up after a year of punishment on 1.5 bar boost - Not a mark on any cams bearings etc .......

Comes in 10w40 and 15w50

Run it in the AE86 drift pig as well ..........

With the Toyota 4A's you get a choice of either the Z386 (small) or Z158 (large) which one do you use?

Not sure, go into your local Toyota Dealer and see what they have or they might even have the info on their website.

I use the larger Z158... its bigger so i guess it should hold more oil and filter more oil.

As for what oil i use... basically anything full synthetic. But lately its been Mobil 1 full synthetic.

sic86

They reakon smaller the filter, more the oil pressure but could be wrong

Under extreme conditions (ie consistently rining the neck out of your 4age on the track) bigger oil filters are more prone to/and can expand and cause a drop in oil pressure.

When you are talking about street or street/track cars and the little filters used on our 4a's its pretty irrelevent. Use the biggest one you can fit.

Edit: There is a episode of Vtec Club where the president of Spoon, Tatsuru Ichishima puts a hose clamp around the oil filter on one of their track cars to stop it expanding. But this is a dedicated track vehicle and is constantly reving out to maintain vtec...

Know this is an old thread, but its been a while.. times have changed:P

What oil do people recommend specifically for 4age 16v engines? (and vis + heat rating)
My engines done abut 120,000kms and due for a change soon. But i don't want to go Motul or anything too pricey.
Anything better than Mobil 1?

And does anyone actually noticed a difference between one type of oil and another?

SNAP

its all really personal choice... i would go nothing but motul in my engines.. 300 v is pricy.. about 90 bux for 5 liters.. but if its gonna make or break my engine i would give the extra 30 bux.. the 300 v has ester which will save your motor if u sudddenly loose oil pressure and if for some reason havent started your motor in a while u wont spin any bearings. for the 4a ..16 or 20v.. either the crono or competition is the go.. you can even go the 8100. 300 v r full synthetic and 8100 is a semi..

for box... redline and diff.. motul again.. lsd gear 300...

i personally don't like to skimp on these products..

and change your oil every 5000!!

whateva dude just make sure its got oil and check it every few days

Vezza

Wow... some people are going a bit far with their oil. For the track it's somewhat understandable, but at the end of the day the factory recommended fill is more than enough.

The people who designed these engines know a thing or two about them and unless your in competition, doing a few track days here and there, it will not require some crazy motul oil costing half the price of your engine!

If anything, its your gearbox and diff oil which needs much closer attention. Unlike your engine oil, it does not get cooled or filtered. Using redline shock proof oil in your gearbox is not really recommended either as it was designed for use in a diff. Yes it does make the box shift like a hot knife through butter but can also have the tendency of glazing the synchros. Once that happens it looses its braking action, synchros get fucked followed by the gear sets.

I'm currently using 10w40 Penrite Full Synth.
Is this too thin for a 16v that hasnt been freshly rebuilt?

Jonny Rochester

Toyota specify a slightly larger oil filter for the 4A-GE than the smallest one used on other 4A's. The engines oil pressure would be effected with the restriction of the oil filter, not the volume.

Don't use good synthetic in engine or gearbox till it is run in. You may have trouble changing gears otherwise.
