View Full Version : Motor options for new car...

Im trying fairly hard right now to decide what motor I want to put in the new ae86. I love the top end of the 16v but want something a little faster. The gze is said to be faster but Im not sure about the top end on it... I have never been in one. How much faster are they? Do they really have an average top end?
I have been in 2 20 valve ae86s. They sound hot as hell but im not sure they are worth the extra over a modded the 16v.

The car is being made as a fast street/mountain run/street drift car and occasional circuit/drift car. I do a lot of twisty work and with my old 16v ae86 used the top end of the rev spectrum a lot.

If someone could perhaps give me a ride in a GZE or worked 16 valve at one of the next meets I would buy you a drink! (non alcoholic of course)

If people want to put their input into my situation please feel free, im more then happy to listen, especially if you talk from experience.

thanks,
Gav

Haha thanks monkeymajik, you get to see my mint 86 too... i'll take you for a ride in it if you want... awesome 4ac power.
I have actually been leaning towards a 20v lately, seeing as the 4agze has gone up in price a lot and is an old motor. The 20v is newer and cheaper. I just dont know about all this water relocation stuff... Can you buy a kit from somewhere or something?

I just got my car back and I'm still waiting for a part of my boost controller, so its running 7-8psi and I've been told to take it easy while the new brake setup/diff beds in. So might have to take a raincheck on that thrash http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/smile.gif

mmm mint ae86 sounds nice.

ill hook you up with a "kit" identical to mine if you like.

notice there are ZERO retarded water lines running from the back of the motor? its set up just like most 100kw's in '86s.

you can check it out sometime maybe, werent you saying you know a friend of mine?

as far as your q. dunno... after the weekend (qld nats).. man the ze dudes from SA were ripping it up.

but a 20v will be ALOT cheaper than a built 16v w/qauds. ALOT.

Thanks Dimitri, pretty helpfull. Yeah I know rory with the white soarer and wes with the ra65 celica, they are always talking about your blacktop with 13x8 superlites etc.
Im just interested in how much the swap actually cost you all up.. and how does the blacktop go in comparison to the silvertops?.. I have been in 2 silvertops and they seemed nice and peaky up the top but not that much faster than a 16v.
Thanks,
Gavin

price depends on alot of things. mine was cheap because i bought an incomplete motor from a mate, thats the reason why it has silver cam covers and silver top style plug an cam gear covers... im really surprised some noob hasnt tried tell me its a silver top yet.

also i did all the work myself apart from wiring... and im using a beta version of the adaptronic ECU, so ofcourse that was cheap.

as for the differances between fitting a silver or black top, theyre identical fitting wise, apart from the throttle sizes. black tops use slightly larger throttles, which are really hard to buy velocity stacks (inlet trumpets? whatever you wanna call them) for. i made mine from fibre glass. ones to suit ST are cheaply available, i think efi hardware does the best ones.

also i wouldnt recomend using factory management with a silver top, afm is a pain and ends up ugly with the huge air box.

i dont really know if black tops are that much faster than silver tops, for NA theyre definately a "better" motor. but not sure if they make alot more power. theyre alot newer engine though, which is a plus alot of people seem to over look.

in Ueo's championship year he ran a mostly AE111 bottom end (crank and rods) and made a claimed 210ps. id say if you plan to raise the rev limit, go with a BT for sure. but if you know its going to stay mostly stock theres not much in it.

sorry, not a very clear answer. like i said ive never been in a gze car, but ive seen them in action. anyone who thinks theyre not faster is kidding themselves, its easy power. it just depends how much of a pureist you are really.
