Cheers Roy,

Yep Dave had the 808 wound up by the last race for the weekend that's for sure, but i still enjoy the challenge of a 1600cc car taking it up to the big boys.

It would have been nice to go toe to toe in the last race but the 3 restarts meant i was really light on Fuel " i only just made it to the line "

We ended up taking out 1st in 1600cc Class, 1st in 2000cc Class and 5th Outright.

Thanks for the Comments EVAN " oh the days of 80's Group A were so good "

Have a good one

Thanks Mate,

We have spent a long time getting the set up & braking just right, which is what helps me keep in touch with the big boys.

Its even better on the short tracks at QR & Morgan Park where the front runners cant get wound up as much.

Hers my final shot of us right up in the front bunch having some fun

Hi Alan,

Ken at Stretter by Stretter made up the front splitter for me as a 1 off

It started life as a AE86 N2 Front lip and was massaged to fit up onto a standard bar because i didn't want to run the big flares.

Rear spoiler is also a N2 item that has been modified to fit "CAMS Improved Production rules for spoiler length" we had to shave 25mm off the back edge

P.S. if anybody knows where i can get a set of N2 flares please let me know http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/ph34r.gif

look out for the competition, a guy in NSW just asked about race importing a 1.6L Mitsi Cyborg for improved production class racing. We just sent him 5 race prepped examples, he's makin a decision soon.

How do they compare tot he AE86? are they still in the same category as you or do their penalties take em into a different category?

COS61AE86RACER
18th July 2005, 09:50 AM
Funkymonkey,

Yep the Cyborgs are eligible for under 1600cc IPRA, Currently there are 2 in QLD running and a fair few in NSW that I'm aware of.

All of the cars running at the moment seem to be leftovers from the defunct Mirage Cup Series and have proven to be quite good little packages.

As for how they go compared to my AE86 ill let you decide from the Qualifying Times taken from Natsoft for the last meeting.

Car Number 61 Cos AE86 1:24.9356
Car number 18 Mirage 1:27.1229
Car Number 19 Mirage 1:27.1300

www.natsoft.com.au

Also Funkymonkey you don't happen to have any 14x8 or 15x8 wheels to suit AE86 up for grabs do you??

Regards
Chris O http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/cool.gif

funkymonkey
18th July 2005, 10:47 AM
Hehe, so I should be telling the dude importing the cyborg to give up while he's ahead huh? he's been lookin at this car http://www.j-spec.com.au/list/3374 for 15k.

hmmm don't think there's anything aroudn that'll fit an AE86 offset, we've got a few S13 rims but you'll need spacers. Besides, I thught Improved Production regs stated that you can't run wheels wider than 7"?

I'm looking into prepping an NA R32 for entry into IPR, cos super sprint gets a lil boring after a while. Just a lil confused with the classification, does a 2.0L evo race in the 2.0L and under category or does it get into a hgiher category due to penalties for having a turbo/supercharger? If I'm up against 2L evos n wrx's then I've got no hope in hell in a 2L NA R32. I know a few guys are prepping NA silvias with SR20DE's for it so there must be some merit in it.

COS61AE86RACER
18th July 2005, 11:13 AM
Hello funkymonkey

Ok best way to look at IPRA is

Classes

Under 1600cc
Under 2000cc
Under 3000cc
Over 3000cc but Under 6000cc

Some factors that muddy the water are.

Turbos = your engine capacity is multiplied by 1.7 & you have to run a 36mm restrictor.

Rotaries have their nominal engine capacity multiplied also and have restrictions on what can be done regarding porting " eg bridge port of X size only "

All classes of early model cars EG before 1986 must run on 60 Profile tyres.

Late model Cars 1986 onwards are eligible to run on 50 profile Tyres but have a weight penalty applied

Before you go too far with the R32 I would check with you Local CAMS office & IPRA Club to see if it is an eligible vehicle.

I know the S13's have only recently been approved and there is a few in the build up stages.

I have not heard any talk of GTS / GTS-T R32's being approved other than R32 GTR's because they were sold here new and ran as Group A touring cars.

A 2ltr EVO or WRX is classed as over 3000cc with the multiplication factors applied which puts them into the under 6000cc class, so your N/A r32 would not have to compete with them for points you would fight with cars like My AE86, 2ltr Escorts, Mirages, Civics Ect Ect

If you don’t already have a CAMS manual I would suggest that you grab a copy and have a good read as the rules are not all that complex but you do need to be clear in what you can & cant do before you plan your car

On to Rims.
I have 15mm spacers on the front & back already so does that help with what you have?
Yep your correct 7inch only but I have a plan that may see the Cos AE86 take on some http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/ph34r.gif boost http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/ph34r.gif in the future and push me up into the over 3000cc class, which will give me the options to run 8's

Can NA engines be modified in this type of motor sport?

For eg rebuilding the little 4ageu with TRD N2 spec internals making the engine rev up to 11,000 with 240hp on tape, http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/laugh.gif at the same time staying in the same class.

also can you increase the track width? I dont know if you have seen BMI JDM racers, but these little cars clock really quick sector times by smart geometry, lite gearbox, lite engines, wide track, big rubber, gt wing, N2 flares to create less drag on the wheels, etc.

funkymonkey
18th July 2005, 11:38 AM
ahh I was reading my cams handbook (also used as doorstop) and I read that variations of full volume production cars were allowed (like cyborgs for mirages and WRX wagons), so I assumed an R32 GTS would be allowed as a variant of an R32 GTR. I will run it by them though just to make sure. If it is, it'd be awesome, from what I read of the regs for IPR, its a very even playing field, although I'm gonna have to downgrade the wheels from 8.5" to 7" http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/smile.gif.

I'll check the offsets of the rims that we have and if any are suitable I'll let you know.

How do you feel about the AE86 goin up against silvia's in the near future? I would have thought you'd want an AE86 to stay within its 1600cc class as its such a perfect car for it, if you go into 3000 cc you're gonna be up against AWD cars with yaw control n other girly cheater technologies.

Daniel, dunno about track width, but the rules allow you to widen the overall width of the car by 50mm either side. Max tyre width is 7", from memory I think everyone has to run the same tyre (different radiuses and widths are OK obviously). As for engine, you're allowed to swap engines as long as within the same manufacturer. Bored engines will have their new cc as their classification, but I don't think there's a rule against strengthened internals. Don't think you can run GT wings as all spoilers have to be within 200mm of the closest panel. Also not quite sure on the gearbox as well, I don't think dog boxes or sequentials are allowed, I can check the rulebook when I get home.

COS61AE86RACER
18th July 2005, 11:58 AM
Daniel-AE86,

Yes they sure can.

For all your other questions yes is the quickest response.

But there are specific regulations items such as

Widths and heights of Flares
F & R spoilers
Wheels & tyres
Suspension mods allowed
Suspension Pick up points
All steel panels must remain & all the glass in the car

Good to see the CAMS manual being treated accordingly.

I think the AE86 will hold its own up against the Silvia's, Sure you can get good HP from the Sr20de but I think the weight factor will hurt them a bit.

As you said basically the AE86 with a 1600cc 212hp + 4AG is a perfect combination as I have proven on many occasions.

To be honest I am reluctant to make a change, but when your consistently running with the cars in under 3000cc RX3 & RX7's and also the guys in over 3000cc some extra HP from a turbo does become very appealing indeed.

Gearboxes are Free and most of the quick cars have Straight cut dog boxes " Sequential are not allowed unfortunately if they were id have one tomorrow "

Diffs are free also provided its the same style " eg solid rear axel in an AE86 must remain a solid rear axel after your conversion "

Brakes are also free, and the only constraint is the discs you choose have to be of a ferrous material " so no carbon discs here "

Cheers

what amazes me is that no one's bothered to run an S2000, even though it'd be perfect for the 2000cc class.

Checked with CAMS, they're gonna look into allowing a GTS as a variant of a GTR. An NA R32 runs 155hp stock, its gonna be hard to make some decent power with that, esp since a mivec 1.6l makes 175hp and a 20v makes 165hp, and even then I'll have a huge RWD disadvantage to the AWD mivec nuts and weight disadvantage to silvia's n 212hp ae86's http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/biggrin.gif

COS61AE86RACER

Morning funkymonkey,

I hope cams comes though for you, the more cars that come into the IPRA class the better.

Unfortunately the S2000 falls into the realms of a sports car not a touring car. This basically comes back to how the manufacturers chose to homologate their cars with the FIA.

There are a few others that fall into the realms of sports cars S6 RX7, Honda s2000, Honda CRX, Mazda MX5 and I'm sure there are many more

have a good one

I wonder how it'll go against the N2 spec hachis of Japan... Would be gettin pretty damn close i reckon....
