I have the JDM 4AGE 16V in my AE86. If you take the oil cap off and look in you will see nothing but black shit every where. The spark plugs seem to foul really quick and the exhuast blows black shit out (see photo below) I don't know how many km's the engine has done. If i rebuilt the top (valve's, cams etc.) would it run better or am I better off changing the pistons aswell? Any ideas?

I thnk it needs a rebuild....
While you are getting your head build, just put some new rings and bearings on your bottom as well.
Your car will drive a lot better....

How big is your exhaust? Is it a straight through? On my previous car, as the cannon would cool down it would create condinsation. Next time you start it up, it would spray the carbon build up as well as the water out. You will notice that the spray doesn't smell like oil and the black actually seperates itself from the water. As far as your plugs and oil, what type of plugs and oil are you using? If you find your fouling to quickly, try iridiums.
Try to eliminate all the small things before you go ripping apart your block.

Just grab a good 20v bottom end and bolt that on. http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/smile.gif

i had mine rebuilt top to bottom for $1500 from dads mate. i could arrange roughly same price if you want.

-40 thou rebore
-block and head shaved
-new pistons, rings, bearings
-head service.
-top and bottom gaskets and seals (VRS kit)

it was well worth it, after running in, its now a year old and doesnt even use oil while flat stick on a drift track.

Sounds like the car just needs a good fcking tune. Check all the sensors are working ok. Blue smoke is bad. White smoke is bad. Black shit who cares. Drive it until it goes bang.
