hi guys

i live in SA and there a mob down here selling rear strut brace for hachi's for $200 they bolt into the back of ur car (rear seat mounts) have harness mountings and r *i think* made out of lightweight aluminium and only weigh 1.6-1.8kg.

my questions are:
R they good?
Is it a good price?
R they cheaper to make ur self?
and what do u guys have?

cheers

Think there was a group buy of the braces ur talking about on toymods a month or to ago... they are pretty chunky ahy.... I believe they are decent gear...
Dont have 1 though or any experience with them.

I have both braces both of u are talking about.

The first 1 (dori_86) is a 'A-SPEC' design (Steve of A-spec was the first person making them with that design i believe)... and yes they are good.... noticeable diffrance to rear chassis regidity. I now know of a few other people making them, and i would think there all pretty much the same (from what i've seen).

The 2nd 1 (DRFT-86) is the 1 that is from the group buy on toymods.
I only recieved it 2day, and was just about to start bolting it in.....
Should be done by 2night.... i want beable to tell you how excatly how it feels as my 86 is unrego'd and i wont get a proper feel for it till next the calder drift practice night.
But it sure does look good and strong. http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/smile.gif

Sorry i forgot to address your questions...

- Yes they are good. Adds extra regidty to ur car.
- I wouldn't say there worth $200, (though thats how much i paid for mine), I'd say there more worth like $80. its not like there very high tech or made of gold. http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/dry.gif
- Yes they would deffinately be cheaper to make your self. Some of you may know of 'Henn', in Melbourne..... he made his own and it cost him a total of $20. http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/cool.gif Gotta know how to weld though.
- I have this brace and the other 1 from the group buy in toymods.

PS: i'll try throw up a pic of both in my car later. http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/smile.gif

i believe one would call such a person a weldinator, or possibly a weldster http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/huh.gif http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/wacko.gif

I was referring to the A-spec style braces (just couldnt remember the name) as there was a group buy of these, (atleast Im fairly sure there was) on toymods.... this was before the group buy of the the other braces that you bolt onto the wheel arches....

both would be benificial however.

yeah, make your own, best way to go, if u dont have a tig welder then your gonna have to find someone else to weld it (if you use ally to make the brace). This is how i did it;
1) Fold rear seats down, remove latches that are held in by 2 bolts on either side of the chassis between the seats.
2) Measure exact distance between the 2 points, 1041mm
3) From that distance minus the thickness of the ally plate u will have at the end, initially i used 3mm so take 6mm off overall for the two ends = 1035mm
4) Go and buy a piece of ally pipe 1035mm long, cant remember what size mine is, i'd say 35mm external diameter (its 3mm thick also).
5) I then cut 2 ends from 3mm plate, 40mm x 75mm, this allows ur 35mm tube to be welded on and room to drill out the holes for where it will bolt in.
6) Weld the 2 ends to the piece of pipe, mark and drill holes and bolt in using existing bolts. http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/biggrin.gif DONE

Now if u havent got a front strut brace, you will suffer from understeer something shocking.

also, i have my brace on the other side than the pic above (all thats different is the way the holes are drilled. This way my rear seats just fold right back onto it. although i sure as hell dont take people in the rear of the car, as the seats are not secure, it is far less obvious to the pigs

I thought the low rear brace was a peice of rice up rubbish? the way it holds onto the car sure makes it seem so. I am using a rear seat brace I made myself out of Cro-mo, its under 1 kg and is so rigid. It's all in my worklog:
