Hey guys,
Just wondering if any1 here has put in a thermo fan in there 86 to replace the constant engine fan?

If so, could you explain the wiring setup or post pics with explenations?

PLEASE http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/smile.gif

Thanks!

Prolly easiest way would be to wire it up to a switch on your dash. Or maybe hardwire it to the accessories so as soon as the car is turned on, the fan runs. (Thats how I am going to wire mine up when I put the CA18 in) Otherwise, maybe trying to adapt a thermo fan setup from a FWD 4AGE might work.

Yeh, i was gonna go witht he switch setup, but i know i'll forget to turn the fan on till its to late...hahaha.

And i dont really want the fan constantly on. I wont it to work like a proper thermo fan does... car reaches a certain temp, fan turns on.

I know people have done it..... but no 1 says how. Those bastards! http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/tongue.gif

Some aftermarket ECUs have the ability to control your thermo fan.. Otherwise I'd say rig it to a temerature switch so when it heats up the thermo fan kicks in, also have it so you have a manual override to turn it on..

Whats a cheap OEM thermo fan that could be used and found at most decent wreakers.....?

repco do a 10 inch thermo with mounting kit and all the wiring and instructions for about $100 you can set it up for push or pull setup. i had one on my 20v AE86 had it wired to ignition temp gauge never went over 1/3 and you get warranty.

sorry guy's i forgot all about this thread http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/tongue.gif

here is basic instructions on wiring an ignition switched thermo using a 12v 40amp 4 pin relay.

4 pin relays have terminals numbered as follows 86, 85, 87, 30. these numbers will be stamped next to the relay terminals. normally there is a little diagram on the relay as well.

relays work as a switching device a 12v signal is sent to 86 which travels through a solenoid in the relay body then through to earth 85. when current flows through the solenoid it energizes creating a magnetic field which closes a switch in the relay body which joins terminal 30 to 87, ( battery voltage to fan )

so as your ignition is switched on the solenoid in the relay energizes which closes the relay switch that supplies battery power to the fan

Now how to do it

always disconnect you battery before doing any electrical work. sparks are scary!! http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/blink.gif

terminal 86 and 85 just use normal size wire same as all the wires under the dash

wire terminal 86 to an ignition signal as this is what we will be using to switch our relay.

wire terminal 85 to an earthing point ( battery negative or anywhere steel on the body) i also use this earthing point for my fan earth so they are sharing a common earth.

terminal 87 and 30 use thicker wire (same size as wiring on thermo fan) as the fan draws a lot of current so larger supply wiring is needed.

wire terminal 87 to your thermo fan positive side, this wire on the fan is normally blue, in most cases the other wire is black so you know thats an earth.

wire terminal 30 to your battery positive side its a must to fuse this wire using a 15 amp fuse and holder, so the fuse will blow if you get it wrong or if wiring rubs through.

now when you turn your ignition on your fan should come on http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/laugh.gif

if not better check your work http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/dry.gif

to make your fan switchable you can include a toggle switch on the earth side of the fan wiring just cut your fan earth run both the wires into the cabin you will have to make the wiring longer obviously!! and mount you switch in the dash now you can turn the fan on and off when the ignition is on. having the switch on the earth side is called negative switching and is the normal method used by most manufacturers.

when mounting your fan put it on the same side of the radiator as the car it came off for example if you use a commodore fan put it on the engine side of the radiator as these are pull fans, they pull air from the front of the car through the radiator. if you mount it in front of the radiator its trying to pull hot air from the engine bay through the radiator and when you are driving its pushing air away that would normally flow over your radiator. Disaster!!!! http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/ohmy.gif

i hope this helps you guys. i'm not an auto eleccy or anything so what i say isn't the rule and there may be other ways to do this i am just sharing the method i used to wire my own fan. if it works for you your welcome to the info if you don't like it get stuffed!! http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/laugh.gif

buy the temp switch, the instructions are in the box its a piece of piss. if you already have the switch and no instructions let us know and i'll post them. i just can't remember it off the top of my head atm!!

Sorry to unearth an old topic, but at least it shows i searched first =)

Im looking to hook up a r31 fan to an excel radiator in my ae86. The excel rad comes with its own closed circuit sensor thingo at the bottom and the r31 fan just runs off a positive and negative.

I read gilly's post and i am comparing it to what i was told to do.

30: battery with 15amp fuse
87: to the positive thermo wire
85: to ignition
86: to the switch on the rad
and ground the negatives of the switch and fan.

but that means my relay isnt grounded and in Gilly's method it is. Should i replace any of the above with an earth wire or should the earthing points from the switch and the thermofan suffice?

thanks

not trying to plug them but sideshow wiring in another state.. not sure sell a lil unit that has temp display and is a fan controller they are 155 with an extra sender for oil temp too pretty good

i would say the way you were told to wire it was using a negative trigger, thats how i have mine wired. through a toggle switch. the toggle switch sends a negative trigger to the relay, wich sends a posative trigger to the thermo.

hey!

with the thermo fans what me and DRF786 did was hook the fan on to acc so that it is constantly on. you can also put a relay in as wel as a thermo switch. There are thermo switches that you can hook up to the top hose, that way once it reaches a certain temperature it will turn on, once it cools down lets say like on highway driving where there is constant airflow the fans will turn off. good luck with ur decesion

cheers

Witzl has done a great thread on this topic with diagrams etc on Toymods.

Choose an appropriate thermostat housing with built in fan temp switch from any of the variety of Toyota engines depending on how you have your cooling system setup; i.e. AE82, SV11 etc etc courtesy of pick a part. There are a variety of angles available

Did you know that buffalos like Meekela here grow big fury coats to keep them warm in the cold nights. Meekela is a beaaaaaaaaaaautiful breed of canadian buffalo and tastes great!
