taitran
17th August 2005, 06:37 PM
My Name is Tai Tran, Im 18 years old and live in Melbounrne
And this is my 1985 sprinter.

It is currently getting painted in PPG metalic blue pearl and soon to get a CA18det or 4agze aswell as a bodykit.

I also already have a set of 17" sparco rims and a Apexi 5 inch muffler that will go on when engine goes in. For now everything is stock except for the steering wheel.

Hopefully will be done by December to go on the Toymods cruise and attend Autosalon to promote my bros shop C&D Motorworks.

Dunno man CA18det seems such a bargain over a 4agze. The 17"s i got for free so yeah, but i realise its probably overkill. In what way do mean wreck the balance?

DRiiFT_King
17th August 2005, 10:46 PM
go all out on it, theres enough sprinters out there with balance all ready,
sounds like its going to be a good project, keep us informed, good luck with it!

RobertoX
17th August 2005, 10:50 PM
ca is so cheap over 4agze?

yes, but wouldnt you rather keep it a toyota car, u get forgies, toyota reliablility, u might be able to sneak it past cops, and less conversion hassles (just)

17's - sell them to some silvia pleb - then buy some 15x8 or something

balance - weight distribution, unsprung weight, scrub raduis's etc

taitran
17th August 2005, 10:58 PM
Yeah thats what everyone reckons but i want something different ,unique, im not gonna drift it , so might as well make it look good and go hard. Plus there are to many ugly stocko sprinters goin around and wanna make mine the best lookin and leave my mark. http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/biggrin.gif .

Never know things might change as time goes on. http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/7/5/4/536981.jpg

17s make your car handle like poo. They also make it high. They also make it look ugly.

Buy a silvia and make it a show car dude, they are waaaaaay nicer to drive if you aren't going to go fast. Plus less rust, safer, etc etc.

considering that the best ae86's bar a few come out of this city (alans levin, lee's jblood trueno, wilsons jblood levin, kenneths d1 inspired levin)... you have a hell of a job to stand up to that claim

you havn't made a good start with going a cheap option ca18det and look-at-me rims

but hey, that's just my opinion. Your style is your style man, if you think its the best in the country, then power to you, wish u luck with it =)

I cant understand why people buy a car with an excellent chassis with good capabilities and potential to drift or grip...and put massif wheels and ghey shit on it so it looks siiiiK in a straight line?

So far everyone who has driven in my car thinks its the most fun on 4 wheels. Sure it looks shitty but once you've had a solid drive in one, i cant see how you would want to set it up for posing and ghey shit. I have mates with fast S13's who would love to own a setup 86. I agree that if that is your interest, buy an alternate car or you are simply selling yourself short of potential fun and enjoyment.

But yes...everyone is different and entitled to their own opinions. So should now shattup.

taitran
18th August 2005, 09:39 PM
Well i understand these wheels are overkill , but i got them for free and i cant sell them because nobody wants to buy them.

Plus im having trouble finding nice deep dish 15's in my price range of around $600 that fit . Im still going for performance as i have a Cusco LSD, exhaust etc, but also want some looks as im also promoting my bros workshop.

Most of the parts im using i can get free but im opting more to a CA18det because T50's are quite rare and weak.

And im opting for 200kw at the wheels which is rather difficult on a 4a without spending mega bucks. Initially i wanted to do a SR20det but i've heard that its too difficult.

My car isn't goin to be a 'rice-burner' or anything just a nice ,clean and hopefully different AE86.

(P.S if anyone wants to swap 17" rims for deep dish PM me)

what all 5 of us? http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/tongue.gif

hehe looks like a nice project Tai. My AE86 is being built up at Driftline, except as a dedicated track car, come by sometime n say hi. Although, about getting 200rwkw out of your CA, don't expect the engine to last long unless you put some serious money into it. Easier to go for an SR20DET for that sort of power with less hassles.

i am sooo jealous of you being able to do a complete rebuild... i dont have the time or a spare car to drive while mine is off the road

will be keen to see how it turns out hey mate

What suburbs is this shop in?., what engine does it have?. I might drop by to get some ideas and pay you a visit, get to know some fellow AE86 enthusiasts. As for 200 rwkw < money or time is not really a issue but its rather the difficulty as i will be putting this in myself with help from my brothers. Only reason i want the CA is stronger box than T50.

t-50 arent as weak as people make out

if u break it get the first 3 straight cut from quaife

decoyslikecurves

or alternatively get a w5# bellhousing conversion thing... only kcost like under 400, and then you can use a w57 etc gearbox which are strong as a german on steriods.

Go hard lad.... let ur vision ripp.......... dont change ur plans just because some person critisises......
Its ur car, so do what u want with it...

As for 17's messing with the balance....if the rims..hypertheticly'' were the same overall diameter with tyres as a 15'' rim and were light weight ..... I dont see how they would affect handly compared to alternate smaller rims..of the same overall size....

I plan on putting light weight 17's with 35's on mine in the future and this would only be slightly 'if any bigger than the stock combination....''not that stockies are performance rims....

RobertoX
20th August 2005, 02:12 AM
u have to spend a fair bit on a ca to get 200kw at the wheels

they arent reliable like a toyota motor either

but it doesnt sound like it will be thrashed so it should be ok

hahahaha jokes

if you take your time and dont "just rush on bargains" it should be a good project - good luck

Thanks Heaps .

Just as i was thinking these rims are 17x8 and have low profile tyres which are similar in diameter to 15's with average tyre. They are a bit big but they are very light as they are a racing rim.

I want my car to look good and go hard, my car doesnt necessarily have to look shit to go hard. Plus my car aint gonna be no show car, just a street car.

A bodykit and a couple of speakers arent going to weigh me down much, especially when i'm aiming to get 150kw at wheels the performance will be well enough for the street. http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/biggrin.gif

I got it done for free by my next door neighbour, who is a panel beater.
It cost me all up around 700-800 for the paints, thinners, prepsol, and polishes etc.

Though i did get a proper quote from his work for $1700 which would of resulted in a better finish.

Hey Luke.
My cars almost there, still having abit of trouble with the fitment of the kit, so im leaving it for a panel beater to fix and fit. I got new 15" Soarer rims that are on the car atm, aswell as my stereo complete and got my existing hatch repaired.

All i need now, is to finish my Central locking and get a new windscreen and it should be roadworthy.

Lets hope its ready, pitty about the 4ac, but not for long , ive decided once again to go the 4agte route. http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/tongue.gif

Looking good man, sometimes regret going for mechanics over aesthetics, but then i just need to go for a drive to 4get that http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/tongue.gif

How much did repairing the hatch cost you? Cos I'm replacing mine with and FRP one from VisionR eventually, they cost around 450.

Are the speakers working? Do they work alright in the door or do they rattle to much?

Cheers

=Alan,Nov 15 2005, 06:41 PM]Are the speakers working? Do they work alright in the door or do they rattle to much?[/b] The speakers are workin great, and work fantastic in the doors. I dont get any rattles at all from the door or the trim itself.
All i did was screw the speaker through the trim and metal behind. If im at the Dec 10th cruise, il give ya a test run.

I actually repaired the Hatch myself. First of all i removed glass, and identified all the rusted areas. I then removed all rusted areas with a angle grinder, and bent some sheet metal to shape and welded it in.All minor areas just got Sand blasted.

I then went over the welded areas with a thin layer of fibreglass for strength, and just used a small amount of Filler to smooth it out.

Simple really http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/biggrin.gif .

Thanks for all the positive feedback http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/biggrin.gif

First i used 1200 grit wet&dry sandpaper to cut back the clearcoat abit, and then applied K&H cut&buff compound evenly then used a angle-grinder with one of those Lambs/sheep-wool socks to buff it.

I tried a manual buffing compound, but the results were not as good.

I dont really want to sell it, but dont really have much choice as i have a R33 gtst on the way. But if theres no interest then maybe il keep it, thats why i advertised it for so much, so it will hang around for abit longer http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/biggrin.gif .

And yeah your right my bros at C&D are trying to make me sell it, as they want me to concentrate on tuning my r33, as parts are easier to come by.

Well we havent done a track car as yet, but have done many street cars.
If you talk to your boss, he will know that we spent a week dropping in the fully rebuilt supra engine which will hopefully break the 600kw mark, aswell as the white R33 drift car project atm. And check out the next issue of Hot4's were featured in it.

Im at Victoria university.

haha i thought so coz i rememba wen i went down ther to get a quote on doin sum stuff on my car... they werent even interested and they wouldnt even look at the car.. and he kept goin on about how piss weak these 86s are and how much better 180s and supras were

but yea hang on to it and u'll see the difference b/w driving a 'fast car' and driving a 'real drivers car'

After going in your 20v beast, thats my no.1 choice as it sounds damn awesome. But never know i might wind up with something much different only time can tell man. http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/smile.gif .

Thinking about going to look at that sr20det one for 5k, and swap everything over.
But then again , i can do that now as my bro has a few lying around.

I'll let you know whats gonna happen, plus my clutch is gone in my 4ac, so i guess its time to upgrade to at least a 16v 4age.

Cheers
