I introduce to you all... my AE86.
She is a variety of 1984 2dr Levin GT Apex.
A short history and then specificatons...

HISTORY
pre-registration
Imported and purchased in 03/04 from John Verban (YahooMotorsport).
The car was a bit rough when it arrived in Adelaide... small rust ...few body dents... signs of previous repair... and disrepair.
However it had a few special bits and pieces if you knew what you are looking for. For instance... front coilovers, rear Tokico HTS 102 struts, etc... (the suspension was set to very soft. So I don't think the importer was aware of exactly what suspension was under the car.
Anyway... I bought it.

I start getting bits and pieces for roadworthy done...
...months pass...

While on a temporary registration permit I spin the car through a barb wire fence when it begins to rain. This is the first moment I realise I also have a tight LSD http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/biggrin.gif
Anyway, after the off road excursion, I am left sideskirtless and money less...
I repair the damage on the car in my backyard. Parker lights replaced with brand new items.
...months pass...

Fail Regency first visit... return a few weeks later and pass! (thanks Steve for helping out with all the stock parts for Regency)

early life
As soon as I got full time rego for the 86 I started using her as a daily/thrash car.
A quick favourite of mine became hills driving, as with a more powerful car than my last ('78 honda accord) I could feel my driving improving in the hills dramatically.
Try my hand at drifting.
Eventually the inevitable happens... While drifting 'on road' during the wet, the rear spins wider than anticipated and up into a kerb. There goes and XR4 and an axle http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/sad.gif not to mention my panhard rod resembles a curly banana.

fixing time stage 1
Well... finding another axle wasn't a problem. I got hold of one in the next week... but to my suprise, while trying to fit the axle, I find out that mine are late model axles (kouki). Now, this was a bit of a setback, I looked into trying different Toyota axles, but none would retro-fit with ease... so i wait for a kouki axle to appear on the marketplace...
... waiting ...
I hear that a friend of a friend has the axle I need. So I enquire... BINGO! the deal is done, the axle is in. Along with a new Whiteline panhard rod and a pair of new 13" minilite wheels at a bargain price!

back on the road
In August I have a go at my first time on the race track in a Mallala G1 Drift competition. I don't manage to qualify but have a great time. I lend my car to a friend Simon AE86 who had mechanical trouble in practise with his car. He manages to qualify, but does not progress too far.

It seems winter is nearly over... so I see my friend Steve about an oil cooler..
he says "Jesse, I have what you need", so out comes a Pajero oil cooler and Corolla sandwich plate. With cooler items fitted I take the 86 for a run in the hills.
Maximum temperatures have dropped dramatically. A hard run in the hills would oftern generate ~105C oil temp. New temp is closer to ~85C. Mission accomplished.

The car has another go at a track day. This time at AIR. Driven by a friend.

I continue to drive the 86 every day, and tackle the hills most nights.

I buy and install a 7point rollcage with side intrusion bars and rear side brace (best bolt in rollcage design for AE86 I have ever seen)

11/04 display car at Small Car Sunday '04

Just after the new year I manage to trip up again. While on my way home from driving one night, I lose concerntration on a familiar road and lock up into a corner. My car ploughs over the edge of the road and down a short slope coming to rest on a tree. It turns out that my front tyres were down to wire.

fixing time stage 2
After taking the car to several chassis repair shops, I am constantly told 'not to bother' as 'it's a write off', or 'you can't afford to fix it', or 'what the fukk car is this?'
Eventually I have a rather possitive chat with Michael of M&C Doyle crash repairs. He offers to fix it at a good price. A new rad support and panel are welded into place and a main chassis rail pulled and straightened.

While waiting for the body to be straightened I go out and buy a full bodykit for the car.

I finally get the car back, and she looks super straight. Michael says it was a tough job, but he was very impressed with the outcome.

There are only a few more things to do do before it's back on the road... these next few steps took me months...
* Bonnet donated by Simon
* S13 Radiator donated by Joel and Steve
* Remove AC
* Replace PS belt
* Paint and fit bodykit
* Sell rollcage to support drug addiction (just kidding, but i did sell the cage)
...months pass...

we ride again
Finally in Early 09/05 I re-registered the car and it's back to being a daily for the time being.

I love this car, we have our ups and downs... yay! http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/smile.gif

It sounds like you had rough time. But when you are in love with something its worth trying to do whatever you can to keep it.

Sounds like a great car, cant wait to see some pics.

Hey Alan,

Im not sure which parts exactyly you are refering to...
So I'll let you know where everything from my recent crash repairs came from!!!

* The rad support is from a bare straight 3dr shell which I already had in my back yard (which reminds me... I still need to pay for that). M&C Doyle Crash Repairs in Edwardstown, Adelaide straightened the front end up and welded in the new rad support for me. Great guys, great price, great quality (I opted not to have it painted), they take their time though http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/tongue.gif

* While the car was getting straightened I decided to get a full bodykit (as opposed to finding another stock front bar http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/tongue.gif) Went with the ken streeter kit, I guess I just like the look of it. (Front bumper mounts came with this kit, so no need to replace)

* Ripped all of the A/C gear out, as it was all mashed up and needed to be degassed anyway (for the crash repairs)

* Replaced standard Jap radiator with a S13/180 twin core item. Twice as thick, taller and wider. Keeps water temps way down!

* I kept the same oil cooler core, It is a bit warped, but doesnt seem to leak any fluid.

* Replaced P/S belt with a standard Bosch item. (had to cut original belt off after the accident and needed shorter one anyway beacuse of A/C removal)

* The carbon/glass bonnet was donated from Simon-AE86s ex drift car. (CHEERS http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/biggrin.gif)

* Standard Aus AE86 grille, bought from a friend at a bargain price!! (DES, U ROCK!!)

Thats about it actually. Luckily I was able to source all of the parts locally (apart from streeter kit) Thanks to all of my mates who helped out, and all of you friendly people for telling me that I suck for not having my car fixed yet. You were a great motivation to me.

Also BIG thanks to Joel-AE86 for coming straight out to help as soon as I called you after the crash! broken leg and all http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/tongue.gif:P

And thanks for letting me garage the car at your place overnight while we got it 'drivable' the next day. (if you don't know what 'driveable' condition is... its the 2nd picture in the Drift Battle mag article http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/tongue.gif)

Hey Simon, from what I recall, Streeter mentioned something about a lifetime guarantee? I'm not sure how this works, but I guess give him a call.

If your super lucky... you freight it back to him, he repairs it and send it back at your expense.

Oh well, we wish huh!

hey fellas, cheers for the comments.

regarding the S13 radiator, the bottom fits in place (i had some trouble because of my P/S lines), You will need to get new hoses. I just scouted around Super Cheap until I found something appropriate. Mounting the top of the radiator is the hard part though. Because It is too tall you will need to slope the radiator back towards the engine and make a bracket to hold in place...

Here Is what I made up for it...

I have excactly same problem when I mount some other car's radiator into my 86, the radiator too tall, I ended up cutting the original bottom bit of radiator mounting, and leave the radiator standing on the chasis, and cutting part of the bonnet frame. dodgy. http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/biggrin.gif I wonder why s13's radiator taller than 86's radiator as I think 86 looks taller

this looks really good in real life! im not a fan of airbrushing either but because it's real light it sort of blends in with the bonnet,

but if im correct it was airbrushed because
A.) friend is an airbrusher
B.) hides all the imperfections in the bonnet from previous owner and
C.) he can do what the hell he wants

To be honest, I don't like the bonnet, but ti's somethng differnet and it's your car http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/smile.gif Rest of it looks fantastic, and if it regularly hits the mountains, who gives a shit.

I think everyone here Aus is too polite towards peoples rides, it saddens me to see a tough and authentic japanese styled car lose it's appeal with silly mods, I mean hay you are active in a forum to hear other peoples views and ideas, while also sharing your own.. But as mentioned its yours so you can do as you please.

The bonnet by itself actually looks quite cool, just not on that ae86

I drive a honda accord wagon right now because I'm saving for a jzx100 chaser. Its bonnet is red. as is the red of the car

I pretty much dont like airbrushing at all. Especially on an 86.

However as I said it is your car and You can do what you like with it.

I definately appreciate and honour the fact that you actually drive the car (judging but what people say and the amount of accident damage you've incurred)

I just think its out of place on an ae86

I think Jesse's bonnet looks great. It is original, it suits the car and it's 'aura' if you could call it that... Believe me it's a scary looking beast in your rear view hammering in the hills.

Big ups.

By the way the image is only really clear in direct sunlight, in low light conditions it blends and just looks like a dark bonnet. It adds to the effect.

I agree with decoys, i think air brushing of murals and stuff is pretty lame, especially on an 86. Imagine how good the car would look with just a plain black bonnet. Its good that you hit the hills but.

And pumpkin, decoys right!

I dont mind the bonnet. Looks pretty cool. Like stated before if it was different like with stand out colours/figures like most airbrushing then yeah. But its not, and its a nice touch.

People dont have to have a go if someone decides to do something different to "their" hachi, its their person touch and what makes "their" car how they want it.

Lay off it you randoms.

whats with all the fan boys trying to defend genkin? this is what starts arguments on the forum. do you really think that someone who owns a car as tailor made and well built as Genkins cares what others think?

the close up of the bonnet made me feel slightly ill but the wider angle shot of the car ruined a pair of perfectly good underpants http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/smile.gif!!!

anyone that knows their local twists like the back of their palm has got my vote!

Bah, you still gave your opinion on it.

I like it too, nice individual touch, like how some people custom paint their rocker covers.

But on a lesser 86, driven by a lesser driver...might not be so cool.

Thanks for the thread pick up guys!
Well, I should get to work on it as soon as my new daily gets here http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/biggrin.gif
Thanks for the offers of help guys, I may hold you to it. But shouldn't be too hard as I can borrow parts out of the pink car once it's not getting used.

And as much as lots of you love the bonnet (myself included), I don't think it will be back on the car when it's on the road again.

I bent up the frame a little bit when i forgot to clip the bonnet pins closed one day http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/tongue.gif

I can't wait to drive it through the hills again either http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/smile.gif

alright guys i think ive hit a soft spot im only joking wid genkin and i respect that guy and his car im just stirrin, so chillax! i dont mind if my car gets dissed but usually its dissed by geeks that haven't got nothing to back up what their sayin, and if your offended by that term 'geek' your just putting yourself in that catagory because im just using that term collectivley if you did any research ud see that my insults arent as unfounded as the seem, soooooooooo ban me i dont care!!! i wont be commiting suicide! i think you guys need to harden the fuck up and whats this ae86 community shit? most of these vultures are just in it for them selves, and if you knew me you wouldnt talk shit like that cos its a small world and who knows you may actually run into me one day interstate mother fuckers!!! and to answer a question 'trippin' is used a lot in ADL especially in the north side of shit were im from, and im an r and b singer and i do use a lot of slang in my songs and in the way i talk so dont be racist its not a 'black' term as you put it its an urban culture term loser, i dont wear pink shirts u metro melbournite so dont put me in a sterotypical catagory. lastly i dont think im a tuffy cos when im on this site im just being me and im not puttin up a front, what i'd say on here would be the same i would say to your face, and if you have a real problem wid me i'll be showing my car shortly and ill introduce you to the twins!! trust me ask somebody, i mean i think im about the only one that didn't get ripped of by steve grant cos he to scurred so rekonize
