I was just trying to figure out a way of removing the glued lines that are across my 86. Im thinking of some kind of solvent to remove them but dont wanna damage the paint in the process. I was looking through the members rides section and an example is on beserker99s car (of the 'lines' that is)

And mine too!!!

These were a pain in the ass (and thumbs) I used acetone to soften it then wax and grease remover to get the rest of the crap off.
aparently heat guns work a treat, but I didn't find that out till i had finished.

WARNING: Pulling off mine reveailed some very nasty rust patches!!! http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/angry.gif

i would only recommend removing strips on a car that has near perfect paint work or a car that you will be respraying, as with older faded paint, you will be left with a huge mess and it will look crap!!

is there any specific solvent good enough to dissolve the glue yet not strong enough to go through to the paint?

go to a car paint specialist and show them, they will have your answer, but i imagine it would be hard to find any that wont affect your 20y/o paint!

Try using a really diluted paint thinner, i used 2 parts water and 1 parts paint thinner. get a sponge and squeeze it over the strip and then use a hairdryer.

It should come off within 30 seconds. When it does quickly wash the thinners off the paint or it'll eat it off. Then give the car a cut and polish and should be ok.

dunno if id be game enough to use paint thinner lol, even if it was diluted. how long did u use the fair dryer on it for?

i used the hairdryer for under 30 ses at high heat about 15cm away from strip.

Trust me the diluted thinner doesnt do much, pretty much like degreaser but abit more potent. Mine came out perfect.

i would not reccomend acetone at all.. it will munch the shit out of the paint, as i have found.. specially 20 year old paint...
i had to remove the pinstriping and the bump strips off mine, as mentioned above a heat gun or hair dryer works a treat, id reccomend the hair dryer as its not as harsh as a heat gun... just get a flat blade and soften the glue up with the gun and then very gently go along with the blade and peel the sticker off making sure you dont chip the paint, even if you just get an edge up, a little trick so it doesnt break off is peel backwards onto the sticker and upwards ( does that make sense?) and as for the bump strips i found when i pulled them off if i was gentle/careful theyd just come off without damage..
however with mine, i am a very impatient person and it was taking its time so with the bump strips i did one side good and the other side i just grabbed the end and pulled it off with as much force as i could ( taking half the paint off the door, back to metal in some parts, and nearly landing on my ass in the grass...) but because i know i am going for a respray sometime in the next few months i didnt really care about the paint, and i rubbed back the bottom half of the car and made it a panda as a temnporary till i get paint..
only other problem i see is the paint underneath the stripe wont be the same colour as the rest of the paint, as the other paint ( im assuming its stocker paint?) wont have been exposed to the sun and weathered to the same colour as the rest?
