Hey,

I want to put a stereo in my 86 soon and need some advice..
I dont want some huge system or anything and was thinking of a 10" sub in the boot and 6x9's in the parcel tray however I'm not sure what to put in the front. I don't want to cut holes in the door trims as they're really clean so I was thinking of replacing the 4" speakers that fit in the dash with better ones. I was thinking of using Boston Accoustics speakers, they're $110 from autobarn.

Any thoughts or sugestions?

Thanks http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/ph34r.gif

HI, If your after just a little bass then a 10" sealed enclosured sub would be fine.

But what i noticed was in an AE86 a 10" sub really isnt enough bass because of the large volume loss throughout the cabin.

I wouldn't reckon using 6x9's if you are using a sub/subs because they distort the low frequencies produced by the sub.
My opinion would be to use 4" splits in the factory location and mount the tweeter abit wider and higher to lift the sound stage, and get a 12" subwoofer in a sealed enclosure and tune it to play vocals, if there's not enough trebel then add a pair of 6" coaxial dual cones to the rear and run this all of a 4 channel amp.

A sound system isnt all that heavy, im running 2x 12" MTX subs and speakers front and rear, and in total it ways 20kg, so not too bad i guess, just keep wiring clean and remove excess to shed weight if need be.

As for the Bostons , i reckon there great, i would also reccomend Pioneer as a bang for your buck components.

Hope i helped ya. Cheers Tai

I wouldnt reccommend mounting anything in the parcel tray, especially good 6x9's, as the parcel tray is weak as piss and you will only end up breaking an already rare item.

my parcel tray is steel http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/smile.gif oh wait..thats cos i have a coupe! i'm just kidding..i had pioneer 6x9's in the back, 12" type S sub, Orion cobalt amp, 4" kenwood 2 ways in the front..sounded pretty awsome..and a pioneer head unit..i think it all comes down to the head unit..pioneers are the best i reckon..soo many settings!

I will be running 1. 12" off atleast 300RMS in a custom hatch build...(as light weight as possible) - 1. pair off quality 6" splits in custom door builds (as light weight as possible again) - maybe some 4" coaxials in the OEM spots... just to lift the sound stage a little - A smick 4ch. amp... and a tidy head unit to run the show..... courtesy of myself and my skillz---------------

-------------------------------------------------------goes against the grain of most hachi owners... even disgusts them... hehe.... but f*** that.... its my ride, and havin quality vibez is a must for me... Hell, Im doin audio engineering next year so its the least I can do for myself.... I will just have to wind up the Psi to compensate what ever weight it adds........... hmm lets say an extra 4 pound for every 20kg.... yehhh, that should do the trick...

when I get mine back from the mechanics, i'm going to start on the stereo. Already have most bits for it. Incl: hu, 6" splits for front, 6" coaxials for rear, 2 12" subs, and 2 4ch amps.

as drft-86 says, i too love listening to my stereo when I drive, so don't care too much about the added weight, shouldn't bother me too much as I have a CA18det up front anyway. Should hopefully help out with weight distribution as well http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/smile.gif

another good idea is scrap the 6x9's and put 6inch on the plastic corners the speakers are slighty bigger but they hold up just nice =)

I have Fusion 4" in the original spots, then a set of 6" 3way in the doors. I have placed these at the back of the doors (in line with the back of the front seats) so the that the rear passengers can hear equally, and to get the best benefit of having a 4 speaker system with the 4" speakers.

I'll post some pics of my setup tommorow, that includes Panansonic headunit, 2x 12" MTX, 6" VDO splits at front and Sony Explode 4" 3 ways at back
With a mono block kenwood amp with 4 gauge wiring for the subs , and a 4 channel amp for the speakers.

For the fronts i literally cut out the hole and screwed the speaker into the wood. and added some Dacron behind.

Will post pics tommorow

sony xplod 4" speakers behind stock grill and head unit, thats enough for me i think as my car is used for drift, besides i love hearing the high revs and induction roar of twin sidedrafts on my 4age thats right no computer or fuel injection. http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/biggrin.gif

it is hard however coming from an audio developed car i do like my chest hurting bass. http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/sad.gif

i got 4" speakers in the front, i think they are kenwood or alpine, and some 6" mounted behind the front seats, the system is nice and clear without being over the top, and it looks pretty good to... i think every thing included it cost me just under $300

Heres my system all up weighs 22.5kg http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/tongue.gif
I did it all myself , including the enclosure, wiring etc.
It consists of :2x12" MTX roadthunder subs
VDO 6" Splits (Front).
Sony Explod 4" 3 ways (Rear).
Panasonic CD tuner.
Kenwood Mono Channel AMp (Subs).
Kenwood 4 Channel (Speakers).
4 Gauge wiring.

http://img413.imageshack.us/img413/3235/picture2794on.jpg
One sub is out being repaired. They are mounted backwards with the connections switched for the bass to fire backwards, in a ported MDF enclosure.

http://img413.imageshack.us/img413/2605/picture2831bq.jpg
My 6" VDO splits mounted in door and tweeter also above. A hole was just cut into the door trim with a extra layer of thin ply beind to strengthen it there wass no need to cut any metal behind etc.
And the Panasonic headunit in normal location with a kill switch near the handbrake for the subs. The standard 4" in the dash were scrapped.

And these are my amps Mono channel on left and 4 channel on right.
All wiring , installation was done by me http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/biggrin.gif

but no matter how much u spend on 4" there still only 4" and the fire into air on ae86, so go get another set of door trims or make your own and fit 6.5 or 6" to front doors and that will always sound way better http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/smile.gif

Thats a nice setup!
I can't make up my mind now, I know a set of 6" splits is going to sound so much better than 4" speakers.
Thanks again for all you help guys, I have so much info now http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/smile.gif

Gettin nice sound is all about the installation man.... if its done right and the speakers can perform close to optimum then anything usually sounds good/half decent.... .... .... hit the 6's up tho they do offer alot more over a set of 4"'s just make sure u do a decent job when hookin em up....

I have my system in my bedroom, laid out ready for install

Pioneer DEH-P5750 (headunit)
Pioneer TSC-1625 (6" splits for the front doors)
Rockford Fosgate 600w RMS 4Ch (running as a 3 channel to sub and splits)
JBL 10" 300w rms dual voice coil sub

I have no back seats in the car, the sub is getting mounted in the rear seat well on the passenger side, amp in the seat well on the drivers side, both neatly covered with carpet ready for the roll cage to go over the top of them shortly

The car is stripped out and will look that way but it will provide a very respectable sq and level for under 12kg

nice system u have there.... funny, I was just thinkin of using the seat wells for the subs....ie: make a fiberglass mould.... but I have something else in mind that Im going to stick with instead...
