Hey,

The gas struts that hold my hatch up are stuffed, and now it falls on my head http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/sad.gif
I called toyota about new ones and they quoted my something astronomical, I also called a mobile re-gassing company they quoted $66 for the pair and Repco said $70-$80 for a new pair.

Has anyone else had to fix these stuts? Would you recommend re-gassing or new ones?

I'm on the southside of brisbane if someone knows of a good place to go.

havent had them done but they definatly need fixin...

Id say just get new fuckers man.... its only slightly more and you know their fresher than yr. 10 honeys.....

LOL, join the club. THe universal fix for the 86 hatch is a fancy peice of technology called a Hachi Stick. Almost every hachi has one (xcept mine http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/wink.gif ).

Step 1. Go to the hardware, and buy a piece of timber about a metre ish long.

Step 2. wedge into open hatch http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/tongue.gif

Step 3. Enjoy/party/do a Hachi Dance http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/cool.gif

... Oops wrong forum.

The so called "Hachi Hatch Stick" is something that shouldn't be in the back of a sprinter, get them regassed. I did it as one of the first things I did to my car and have absolutely no regrets!

One thing that I did notice is that the hatch struts were installed upside down (the body of the shock, the black bit, should be bolted to the hatch and not to the body of the car) this causes it to wear out quicker because the seal at the top of the strut dries out (apparently)...

definitely get the stock ones regassed!!!!!

in the 80's car manufacturers skimped on things you are supposed to cut costs on, like interiors and stereos.

most other things were quality, materials were cheap and plentiful, right down to the quality of the crome piston inside the hatch strut.

the new ones pitt real easy and the seals are cheap, basically a regas on an oem tokico hatch strut should last 15 years, where as hatch strut regassers are seeing 2003 commodore wagons already!!!!! Meaning the $80 repco pair will prolly last 2-4 years

I bought new ones. I bought a pair of Monroe's for the ae82 (there a little bigger but didn't matter, just opened the hatch more). Can't remember how much they sent me back.

I had mine re gassed about 6 years ago, and I have an N2 spoiler which is pretty heavy on mine and they are fine after all this time they are still good. Save the cash get them regassed.

I had my struts re-gassed on saturday. It cost me $66 from Gas Strut Recharge, they were the cheapest place I found and they came out to me aswell. Its so good not having to fear the hatch landing on my head hehe

Same problem when i got the car. AE82 ones... cept hatch opens like 5cm less.
