I have recently acquired a 1982 KE70 Corolla. I have always had a passion for the old KE and decided i'd get one again.

The car initially cost me $450 with 2 months rego. Despite the 4K's lack of power, she's a rust bucket of fun through the hills and doesnt have too many problems keeping up with Nissan junk on the downhill.

CAR: 1982 KE70 Corolla (early shape)

MODS:

ENGINE:

Full service - plugs, filters, oil and points.
Adjustment to fuel mixture and advanced timing
AE82 radiator with single thermo
2.5" under diff jun bl cannon (sick)

SUSPENSION:

Front:
GH Sigma Lower Control arms
RA40 Celica Tie rod ends
Kmac cut ghey springs
40W70 engine oil in shocks
Wheel aligned to 0 toe, approx 7deg. castor, 3deg neg. camber

Rear:
Custom 18mm sway bar
6kg/mm custom springs

Wheels:
14x7 +8 Mk1 Supra wheels front w/ Yoko A539s 185/60s
14x7 +15 Draglights rear w/ Nankang 185/60s

Other mods:
CD player from my ae86
full sick drift button
black bonnet and black side strips

Thus far, besides having lots of things lying around my yard (i.e. wheels and springs), the car has cost me close to $600.

I have recently purchased a 4AC for it, and hope to make it into a fun drifter for under 1K.

sounds good mate, not a fan of the old 4kc engines... my mate has one, it has so much body roll and is that lacking in power.

4ac should be nice if you are doin a cheap drift, 4age would be nice but if you have a sprinter theres not much point in that.

good luck mate

Yup 4K-C is rather gutless.

With the current suspension mods its handles very well and has little body roll.

In the wet it slides quite well, even open wheeled. Just gotta be violent and abuse the shit out of the clutch...no different to an ae86 http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/smile.gif

I don't see why you would waste your time with a 4A-C, might as well spend the few extra dollars and get a 4A-GE..

Yes yes, this is true. My goal is to spend under 1K on the KE and make very driftable. At the moment with a 4K it reps hard in the wet bu t can rep shit in the dry.

I have obtained a 4A-C for $25s and already have a crossmember and some other gear. Just need a peddle box, clutch hydraulics and a T50.

The lca's are 20mm longer, and the caster is maxxed out.

I didnt actually get it measured...but its a fair bit. Sure beats the 3 deg. max I can get on my ae86 with S13 sus http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/sad.gif

haha nice KE Andy!

Unfortunately here in SA driving around a track car gets your ass plowed on a daily by police. Otherwise my hachi would be my daily street slider. The KE slides mad on the street in the wet. It just needs some 4A power.

So very true!

4ACs are simply junk to most AE86 owners. It makes twice the power tho than a 4KC!

Yep, Sway bar and castor rods bolt straight to the sigma LCA. Its simply a straight swap that only requires longer tie rod ends. They're about 20mm longer than KE or AE arms thus giving you approx 20mm more track and a fair bit of negative camber (varies between KE and AE).

RobertoX
28th October 2005, 09:03 AM
Wouldnt they give you about 40mm more track? (20mm each side)

I've got a day off on monday so think I might pay a visit to Upull http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/smile.gif

Do you have a cross member for the 4ac?

I was thinking of getting a ke70, I think they look a lot nicer than the 71

Yup yup...appox 20mm either side will give you 40mm total http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/smile.gif

I have a spare AE86 crossmember for the KE, all I need is a T50 and clutch gear.

I also agree, I prefer the look of the early KE's rather than the shovel nose late KE's and AE's.

GO THE KE70!

how good are those celica/supra rims on corollas. best little 14" wheels toyota ever made.
also loving the budget, and your obligation to keep the illegal tread on the front of the car.

i hate understeer, wouldn't you be dealing with a fair bit of that with those tyres on the front.

.... oh and heres' a little something to keep those dreams alive.

RobertoX
9th November 2005, 02:03 AM
just because the tyre is a bit low on tread doesnt necessarily mean its dry grip will be greatly affected...the rubber compound is still the same...wet grip different story!!!

Go the ke70s! ill post a thread on mine soon

Joel-AE86
9th November 2005, 10:12 AM
Yip the compound on my front tyres is awsome. In the wet and on dirt its very understeery...mainly due to exessive camber! In the dry she has no troubles keeping up through corners.

RobertoX
9th November 2005, 10:47 AM
I picked up some sigma arms and ra40 steering ends... new ball joints in and I'll chuck em in tonight...

Something I noticed at u-pull it was they had a 'shovel nose' (what lookes like an ae71) but it was plated as a ke70.

does that mean that they updated the ke70 to the new look before they brought out the ae71 with the same look?
I thought it was as simple as ke70 had the older look and the ae71 had the newer?

But hopefully I'll be able to check out your ke at the bbq on sunday http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/smile.gif

ke70ute
9th November 2005, 11:03 AM
yeah i'va actually got one of the '84 model ke70s.

they updated the front end, but leaving the 4kc engine in her with the cable clutch was the dumb bit.

so in order for me to slap in my 4age i hav to get a T50 and put a hole in the firewall for the hydralic clutch and do something about the hole for the cable clutch.

so don't be fooled! (like i was) http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/huh.gif

Joel-AE86
9th November 2005, 01:09 PM
hahaha looks can be decieving! You are correct Rob...the post 1983 KE70's came with a shovel nose front end but kept the same running gear. I personally dont like the shovel nose fronts, I prefer the oldskewl square front end.

Goodluck with ya sigma arms Rob. I was too lazy to replace the ball joints on the arms that I got...even tho they looked farkt. Replacing your lower control arms takes a fair while! make sure you have some longer tie rod ends also...otherwise you'll run into issues. You'll also need a wheel allignment afterwards.

RobertoX
9th November 2005, 02:07 PM
Yeah thanks,

I've got some RA40 tie rods, and some t3 camber tops to install also...

I'm going to have a crack at my own wheel alignment and then take it to bob jane or something to see how close I can get http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/smile.gif
Set the camber -2, dial in as much castor as I can and set the toe to a little less than factory, should be nice

I reckon that the older square ones look much better! almost worth buying the old looking one in preference to a ae71 if you have a 4ag or something in mind for it http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/smile.gif

acctually you're wrong, a tyre that is low on tread will have significantly less grip then that of a tyre that has new tread (but has been bedded in)

why? the compound goes off! tyres get large amounts of heat cycles in them from stopping and driving conditions, this conbined with age, makes for a lower grip compound.

so yes... even tho you have more tyre surface area on the road, like a slick, your not going to have any where near the grip of a slick. because of the compound.

yeh few mods are being done here and there.

Putting engine oil in your shocks work wicked....but not for too long :? One of my shocks has farkt out.

I chucked some SSR meshies on the front and flared my front guards, which look fair tough.

The car is defected at the moment for some wak shit. She should be off in the next month or so I hope. Full story regarding the defect can be found here:

Defect gheyness (http://www.nissansilvia.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=150174)

I plan to repaint in a little while and to fit AE86 struts and brakes to the front.
