Hey,

Its time for me to start doing up my 86. First step is a 4age. I'm sure quite a few of you have done this before and if you can help me in any way that would be great http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/smile.gif

Firstly, what type of 4age would you recommend? Big port, small port?

And sould I buy a FWD and convert it or purchase a RWD setup?

I've read the article on the toymods website about converting a FWD 4age and I think I should be able to manage (then again... http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/tongue.gif hehe)

Also reguarding the price of the engine, what prices have you paid and what is the average for a 4age ( I know price depends on a few things, I'm just after a rough idea so that I don't get ripped off)

Also I've found a RWD 4age with gear box, and ecu for $1400, is that reasonable or a bit high??

Thanks

So many questions!!!

Ok...

Firstly, the big port is an easier swap because you can get the proper RWD inlet and exhaust manifold, so I guess it would be easier and cheaper to find a FWD AE82 4AGE and convert it to RWD, though the parts are becomeing a bit rare (ie water pump etc)

$500 seems to be the going rate for a 4AGE big port, you might even find one with the ECU and loom

$1400? If the G'box is genuine JDM and the Loom is comlete i'd say yes, but depending on the Kms (JDM boxes go for around the $600 to $700 mark by themselves) If the 4AGE is already in RWD format all you'd need to do is intergrate the Loom into your own and its done!!!

(Not forgetting the fuel system of course)

yeh i don't know why the JDM boxes go for so much..despite what people think..there the same as an ADM box, aside from the bellhousing..that just puts the clutch slave on the other side..which will require a modified clutch line in your case then..not hard..but extra work for no gain..just use your stock T-50..get it rebuilt..$3-$500 depending where you go /who you know, thats new bearings, syncros, and seals..

i'm building my smallport 4AGE from ground up..check my thread in tech section..should be ready in about a week..

and about the water pumps...what do you mean rare?? you can get a repco brand one for about $80 and a toyota genuine one for about $110..it's just a AE86 4AC water pump..

The ratios are slightly different between the Jap T50 and the ADM T50 (So I was told, also, I ment the rear water pump housing, doesn't the 16v fronts also have a different length?

the ratios arent different, its the final gear on the lsd equipt sprinters that are different.

correcting myself on that, the JDM water pump isn't identicle to the 4AC..but nothing a few hoses can't fix..
i use a 4AC one on mine..i mean for the sake of a few cooling hoses..

all toyota factory T-50's are the same across the board..
the ratios are

1st 3.587
2nd 2.022
3rd 1.384
4th 1
5th 0.861

same ADM and JDM..unless someone has pulled the box apart and put in a TRD gear set or another aftermarket your box will have these ratios..if a JDM 86 'feels' closer together compared to an aussie one..it would be because of the different diff ratios..

The first step is definatly a 4age. Its not an 86 without this revy twin cam engine.

Theres so much information out there on this conversion you will be able to do most of it yourself which is a huge cash money saving.

I still cant believe that these engines still can be over $1000 complete! way overpriced if you asked me. for that price you can get complete engines and loom from a ae101 or ae111. Think about it, unless they have been rebuilt they have definatly done over a few hundred thousand KMS and i in my opinion will cost you double if you have to rebuild it.

I bought my complete 1995 4age for $1000 flat. The fuel system was probably the greatest expense as i bought all new lift pumps, surge tank and main pump at just under $400.

With forums like this and toymods there are heaps of enthusiasts that can help you (well most people are willing to help)

Good luck

Where can you buy a AE111 4AGE for a $1000?

hey,

Sorry I know it was a few questions http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/tongue.gif hehe
The engine and gear box are from a JDM sprinter from what the seller told me in an email, also the loom is complete. However I get the impression I may have to buy a few extra parts because the email says call for how much work/what parts you may need to buy :S I meant to call the seller today but didn't get around to it, I'll try to do it tomorrow.

Thanks

I just called the seller reguarding the eninge setup. He tells me it was taken in japan by an australia guy and sent over here as an import engine and to fit it I will need an exhaust, longer lower radiator house and someone to intergrate the loom with the one in my car. I was told it was running in japan, So with the rest of the information, is that an alright deal?

Thanks

I saw a complete trueno front cut for sale for 3000. Came with suspension, brakes, all bodywork, everything (except dash and front interior). Dont know how much it actually sold for.

I think they go for around 1000 for ae86 rwd motor with loom and ecu because it saves a lot of hassle of getting the ae82/aw11 bigport convert to rwd format, both parts and labour. And you got a lot of factory rwd bits that make your engine bay look way much cleaner than any ae82/aw11 4age rwd conversion.

chris - get it..but insist on a compression test..off the top of my head i'm not to sure about the minimum limit, but just incase it fails, i'd be saving to rebuild it with at the very least new rings/bearings and a hone..it's not expensive..my new rings cost me about $18 each piston, and the bearings i got for about $60 and $90..granted those prices are very very good as a mate of mine got them (engine reconditioner) all the manual work is just undoing bolts and nuts..

i know i makes it sound easy, but it's not a walk in the park..as long as you have a book, or know a mate who has built an engine before you'll be right..there are no special tricks with rebuilding a 4AGE, there just like any other motor! cept the 4AGE's are cooler http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/tongue.gif

Thanks for your advice matty,

A few of my mates have done stuff like that before so they should be able to help me out.

This will sound silly but an engine needs to be run to perform a compression test, doesn't it? from what I gather the engine I'm looking at isn't running, just sitting in a shop waiting to be sold.

I understand alot of my questions probably seem a bit novice (because I am novice http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/tongue.gif) and probably almost annoying to answer but thanks for helping me out, I appreciate it http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/smile.gif

just a starter motor..so a gearbox mounted on it..chuck a starter in it..get a compression gauge and chuck it in the spark plug hole..(with the others out) crank it 6 times..most of the compression should be created by the 1st crank, and then the subsequent ones just push it a little more..but 85% or so should come from the first one..thats a good motor if it does http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/smile.gif do it to all of them and write down the pressures done buy each..should not vary any more than 5-10psi MAX between them..if it does..you might need a rebuuild..perform a wet test to make sure, this is done buy putting a small amount of oil in each of the cylinders (like a littel cap full) and repeat the test.. if it all goes fine, i wouldn't be to worried about it..a wet test will give you high pressures usually, not by much..but a little more..BUT if it still fails a wet test i would be concerned..
