Im going to drain and change my oil tonight.

What oil do people suggest for a 16v 4age?

Car is also fitted with a very good oil cooler. So temperatures don't get too hot, I guess I can run some thinner oil??

Nothing rediculously expensive please http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/tongue.gif

Im using Shell helix plus eco 10 {10-30}
http://www-static.shell.com/static/global/images/general/oil_products/product_shots/helixpluseco_146.jpg

The bottle weighs less than what I usually use on the 4ac (normal shell plus) and it feels like theres a power increase, also it only costs $35 for 5ltr's.

Yeah I used motul turbolight on my 4age, I think its 10-40w...
Only noticed a small difference in revving up high but the oil pressure was always good and it didnt burn any so I was happy =)

I personally recommand "Fully" synthetic oils.... not mixes... they dont burn... better properties... but generally more expensive... If your in Queensland... good idea to get an oil with up to 50W rating... better for the hot climate...

I used to run a penzoil straight 50 mineral. It was the only stuff that wouldnt turn to shit in the 35+ degrees heat with no oil cooler http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/sad.gif

if you have a non rebuilt 4AGE or 4AGZE etc i would just be sticking to a mineral 20W50..something like a penzoil street machine..nothing special cos it doesn't have to be..

if you have just rebuilt your motor, or running it in etc etc..then i would be looking more specific..

I use Penrite HPR 15 in my 16v and also Nulon E30 additive which last 80 000km. I also use a K&N Oil filter. Don't know if it is really that good as don't get to drive the ae86 much lately

what? are you serious? it doesn't matter how much it's ment to take from a toyota handbook etc..go off the dipstick..but make sure you pour in oil bit buy bit and leave for about 2 mins eachtime..the handbook is just a quote..if your engine is 200 000kms old, or if you service it every 10 000km's (too long between services) alot of gunky build up may be around the iside of the block/head..go by the dipstick..once you have about 90% full on the dip stick..start up the car, let it run for a few mins.. check for any leaks around the filter/plug..let sit for a few mins, then recheck and top up a little more if necissary..

LESS OIL IS BETTER THAN TOO MUCH OIL!! DON'T BE TEMPTED TO OVER FILL!!

yea mines a bit past the dipstick before start up... and a tad over the Full mark after driving it

would it be best if i drain it and jus pour back in 3.5L?

crazy86
21st November 2005, 04:22 PM
You never fill a car with "3.5litres". The amount quoted is a guideline, as every car is different, Just do as was said before, fill it up till it starts to show on the dipstick, then fill slowly (a little at a time) untill you get it to the full mark.
An engine with too much oil will cause excessive oil pressure, which can cause nasty things like blown oil seals, blown oil lines, and blow-by into the combustion chamber, all of which are bad, hmmkay.

Just remember, a cold engine on startup can create much greater oil pressure than under normal operating temperatures, as the oil is still cold and therefore quite thick. If you give it a caning while the oil is cold (eg drive straight up a steep hill straight after startup), the pressures reached will be the highest reached at any other time.

hey guys
Be very careful using exspensive sythetic oil in your old f***ed motor!
as all the detergents and cleaning agents will remove all of the carbon built up in your motor .
You may think this would be good untill you discover that those bits of carbon were what was stopping your engine from rattling you will also find that if you have any oil leaks and you go to full synthetic that oil will start pissing out

cheers doug http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/blink.gif

Hahaha... I have a friend who called me complaining that his escort wasn't running. I asked him if he had done anything to it or whether it had just started running bad. He informed me that he hadn't done anything except top up the oil... what he didn't tell me is that he topped it up with 9 litres! He had just filled the engine up until it came pouring out the oil cap! When he tried to crank it it struggled really badly and sprayed oil all over the engine bay. Lucky for him that we could drain most of it out down to the correct level and then it was fine http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/tongue.gif

man I would not liek to see you friend owning a hachi.

I change my oil every 3000-5000kms.

but because i have a after market computer and it tune to best power i can get for a 20v.

so everytime or every second time i go to drift day i change oil.

that is about 500-800kms every change.
gtx3 are cheap anyway ($22 @ 5lts)

ive never really trusted penrite with their crazy vis. you cant go wrong with castrol toyotas love it, ive been using it for 6 years but with my new 100kw im gonna run a oil flush from nulon part no. EOL and then motul Power ive herd a lot of good things about it , they suggest for engines under 120,000 klms use turbolight and over that use power
